dude...f**king amazing band! they've been my favorite band for years now, since i first heard destilj. they're both GREAT people too...i live in detroit and i see them around quite a bit at shows and what not. they're always open for talking to people...well, at least jack is...meg is super shy and doesnt talk much to anyone. but, they're totally nice and super cool and rock harder than anyone else today.
if you guys like them, you should check out other awesome detroit rock bands like:

No,people always say,"If you like the White Stripes, listen to the Black Keys."
This excited me because TWS are pretty much the only Rock band around right now and I prefer ROCK!
So I listened to TBK.
They aren't fit to open for the band that opens for the band that OPENS for The White Stripes.

yeah...but most people already know them...and while they're a totally decent band, they pale in comparison to the bands i listed above....especially bands like the dirtbombs, the sights, blanche, paybacks, etc...i just wanted to bring some much deserved attention to some lesser known bands....though most of them have been coming up pretty damn fast.
oh, and by the way....in the spring is the release of a documentary called IT CAME FROM DETROIT. its all about the detroit garage rock revolution that has been taking over the underground rock scene and reviving rock and roll. it incorporates like over 30 detroit bands and it's also gonna have a good amount of whist stripes stuff (The guy started filming it just as they were getting big). so keep and eye out for that. www.itcamefromdetroit.com

well, theres only so far back into music he can go and still get his point across in a 2 hr documentary. this was actually a problem the film maker said he had....does he start back with MC5 and Iggy Pop...or does he start in the late 80's/early 90's with the Gories, etc....stuff like that. but, i believe he's wanting to focus more on this modern day rock revolution that the music from detroit has been fueling....so, while i'm sure bands like MC5 and the Stooges will be mentioned, its not really necessary to dive fully into them, because it would perhaps detract from themain focus of the film....though it goes without saying that those bands are obviously of great influence to pretty much most of the bands today being featured in the doc.

in a few months the dirtbombs are coming out with a 2 disc album of over 40 songs of rare/unreleased b-sides and covers!!! ben blackwell from the dirtbombs is an awesome awesome guy. i actually found out that in highschool my dad was bestfriends with his dad....and my dad was also good friends with one of jack whites older sisters (jack and ben are cousins). he told me a funny story that at jacks sisters graduation party, jack was only a baby, and his mom told my dad and friends to keep an eye on jack in his carraige and no one wanted to because he was a pain in the ass baby :D
guitar wolf? who's that? never heard of him. althouh,i know tonight i'm getting my socks rocked off by the sights down at the magic bag. i highly suggest you attend. the sights are one of the greatest live bands i've ever seen! and they're gonna get huge off their next album to be released in early april. i got a copy of it and its phenominal....it totally dwarfs all their other albums.

p.s.- they have a concert DVD out called under the blackpool lights...its a totally decent performance ...but its nothing compared to some of the shows i've seen them play....

dude...for the fourth album, ELEPHANT...they went into the studio with only 2 songs prepared. within 3 days they had the entire album written, recorded, mixed, and mastered...without the use of any computer technology...they went straight up old school. they dont ever practice, not even before shows, they dont even use set lists at shows...jack just starts playing and meg has to keep up. its ridiculous...and by all rational reasoning it should result in embarassing failure...instead they make it work and turn it into ridiculous success. and i believe their third album, white blood cells, was completely done from start to finish in 2 weeks.

i wrote a short review of them for an underground pub to introduce them to audiophiles who don't know much about modern rock:
Elephant by The White Stripes. You’ve probably heard of The White Stripes even if you’ve been living under a very old rock. The Jack and Meg White team (brother & sister? former spouses? - they’re not saying) gained considerable recognition in 2003, winning a video production award from MTV for the song “Seven Nation Army” and garnering Rolling Stone’s Best Rock Artist award for that year too. The Stripes’ style is a curious mixture: Their sound is classic hard rock riff, garage-indie and bluesy-rock, all of which sharply contrasts with their visual image of a teenaged Wednesday Addams* beating time for Edward Scissorhands turned rocker...both outfitted in peppermint colored garb. (Hard to bend the mind around that kind of image, isn’t it?) Jack’s talent with guitar, and keyboard (with off beat song writing), counterpoints the mechanical, but competent artlessness of his drummer counterpart, Meg. Somehow, the music made by this unlikely pair from Detroit is as tasty and addictive as a bowl of buttered popcorn at a 1970s “B” movie. As a point of interest for tube nuts, Elephant was recorded in England entirely with tube gear older than the artists themselves.

so, i just got back from the GBMS listening party in detroit where i picked up an advance copy of the album which came with a free limited edition 7" single, and i have heard the album for the first time (i refused to download it)....and i LOVE it, it think its great. and i dont know why everyone was talking about this big dramatic change, i didnt htink it was all that different and it still had white stripes all over it. and i cant say what change there was is entirely unexpected or surprising. all in all, not their best album, but i love it none the less!

a lot of people say that, and they're not necessarily wrong. she's not a traditionaly skilled drummer, but the un-skilled simplicity in her drumming is exactly what works for the band. i've had the pleasure of hearing recordings of jack playing stripes songs with a more conventional drummer, and it just doesnt sound right. it honestly doesnt work at all. i know thats not gonna change your mind, but i just had to speak my end of that.

while i love GBMS, it is my least favorite album. it was obviously quite experimental. jack had actually originally intended there to be a lot more guitar on it, but if he had done everything he wanted to do with that album it never would have been finished, which is why it can feel a bit unfinished at time. but theres still some amazing songs on there, and nothing on there i personally dont like.
the first two albums are still my favorite, and jack says this new album is most similar to their first album. aparently though, it'll have bagpipes on one track, and deuling guitar and trumpet on another...that ought to be crazy.

I think rolling stone did the 500 greatest guitarists a few years ago and jack white was number 13 or something high up like that and Mike Mccready or stone gossard from pearl jam werent even in the top 500, which just magnified my annoyance ten thousand fold.

if you listen closely to "ball and biscuit", you can hear jack white learning the blues, then deconstructing the blues and lastly, pissing on the remains beacuse there is nothing left of it to explore.

Exclusive - NME.COM hears new White Stripes songs
'Icky Thump' tracks previewed in London
NME.COM has been given exclusive first preview of the new White Stripes album 'Icky Thump' today (March 2).
Three song from the the follow-up to 2005's 'Get Behind Me Satan' were aired at a special playback at London's Soho Revue Bar.
The duo recently recorded and mixed their new album at Nashville, Tennessee's Blackbird Studio.
Here's NME.COM's verdict on the three tracks we heard:
'Icky Thump'
Starts with Meg on pounding bass drums, then breaks into an experimental, heavy sounding 70s riff, that at points varies from a 'Black Math'-like rock sound to electronic sounding, processed sections. The vocals almost never repeat themselves as and there's little conventional structure. Jack's vocals are heavily treated in the production with one of the few clear lyrics in this mainly instrumental track, going, "Why don't you kick yourself out, you're an immigrant too".
'What Love Is'
A more classic sounding White Stripes song recalling 'White Blood Cells'-era. It's a strong, melodic love song with Jack singing the following for the chorus: "You're not hopeless or helpless/I hate to sound cold/But you don't know what love is/You do as you're told".
'Conquest'
The biggest departure of the three tracks previewed. It's an unexpected mix of big guitars and a bold horn section. Boasting a Spanish, Latin feel, it's a third person storytelling song about a serial womaniser, who finally meets his match. "Conquest, he was out to make a conquest" sings Jack. "She was just another conquest, but the hunted became the huntress".
Generally the feel with these tracks, is the band are back to big sounding guitars, but allying that with some very experimental, almost electronic sections.
Interestingly the three tracks were accompanied by an in the studio video of the duo recording the songs, and teasingly one section even feature a bagpipe player, though the instrument didn't appear on any of the tracks.
The tracklisting for the album will also include:
'Catch Hell Blues'
'Little Cream Soda'
'Rag And Bone'
'Clicky Bump'
'You Don't Know What Love Is (Just Do As You're Told)'
'I'm Slowly Turning Into You'
A date is still to be set for the album's release, but it is expected to be out in June
im pretty certain 'Catch Hell Blues' will be the cure to erectile disfunction.

White Stripes Album Details
2007-03-23 10:54:01.773,
Story by: Kenny Herzog
Jack and Meg have emerged with their sixth album, their first for Warner Bros. (which has also taken on the band’s Third Man imprint) and, most importantly, their first with bagpipes. Those are a couple of the surprises on the ultimately straightforward Icky Thump, which will see daylight in June. CMJ was treated to a special advance listen of the 13-track record, which was recorded in a super-long (at least for the Stripes) three-week session in a super-modern studio (for the first time) and clocks in at a super-sized (relatively speaking) 48 minutes.
As long as the Stripes continue their minimalist-duo tradition, their formula for lo-fi blues-punk won't so much continually expand as it will vary ever-so slightly and then snap back to basics. Less ornate and spacious (i.e., no piano whatsoever) than Get Behind Me Satan, Icky (the title's a bastardization of an English term that connotes excitement) isn't exactly De Stijl either. Although the second track, "You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)," is a ferocious melodic rocker not dissimilar from another song with parantheticals, "You’re Pretty Good Looking (For A Girl)." Elsewhere, things jump around from the wild solos of the title track and "Little Cream Soda" (which is more or less no-bull**** garage-metal) to the strange, mariachi-esque madness of "Conquest." (Remember in Election, when that crazy nature call would play when Reese Witherspoon got that wild look in her eye? Think that, but with guitars and horns.) And naturally, as the album draws to its close, we get the more traditional acoustic blues of "Effect And Cause," which sounds like the grandchild of the Stones' "Dead Flowers" (with G 'N R's "Used To Love Her" perhaps being the latter's initial offspring) and "Catch Hell Blues," which lives up to its name by smashing slide-guitar up against a vigorous punk rock chord progression. In between, they even get a little Waterboys on us with the Gaelic jaunt of "Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn."
Icky is another step in a semi-lateral direction for a band that commendably sticks to its humble guns, despite the obvious juxtaposition of being privy to bigger budgets and getting further removed from the true garaginess of their roots. It's very possible that, despite Jack's incredible talent as a musician and songwriter, the Stripes' routine could wear thin if they don't eventually give in to something drastically outside of their comfortable red-and-black box. But for now, there's just enough thump and careful creative leaps in these tunes to keep their Detroit motor runnin'.

seeing the lyrics makes me like the song even more:
a rich white american musician, gets trashed and goes down to mexico to perfom. he's seduced by a redhead mexican chick who turns out to have a vengeful vendetta against americans because she was kicked out of the country for being an illegal immigrant. 'icky thump' ends up being bound and robbed by the lady. he has a moral awakening and returns home and "learned to clean up after himself", implying he once lorded over a maid staff of illegal immigrants that cleaned up his messes.
also, on the white stripes official website is some new tour dates. mostly for canada (they're planning on playing every province and territory). and a few american dates. for america, they only plan on playing the 16 states they've never played before, then a very limited number of regular stops. if you plan on seeing the stripes this tour in america, i highly encourage you go to them and not wait for them to come to you. so a road trip may be in order. presale for these dates is April 30, 10 am.

^^my personal favorites are their first two albums (self titled and detijl). but heres a run down of what they have to offer:
THE WHITE STRIPES (s/t)- really raw, dirty, and low fi, leaning more towards their punk influences, but as always rooted in blues.
DESTILJ (pronounced 'de style')- probably their most well rounded album...it has some serious rock your face off songs, slower jams, pop songs, all around goodness, some of their best work.
WHITE BLOOD CELLS- also displays a pretty wide variety of music, and features their breakout hit fell in love with a girl....but in general is a bit more mellow than most of their albums, but fantastic all around.
ELEPHANT- most popular track is seven nation army. this is a straight up rock your face off album, like big rock songs, arena rock....its only drawback possibly being too much rock for one album? though an incredible album, none the less.
GET BEHIND ME SATAN- quite experimental, which turned off a lot of people. not much guitar on this album, but when its there you feel it in your bones. lots of piano and marimba. fun stuff. while my least favorite, i still love it, but not best for a stripes newbie.
ICKY THUMP- well, just listen to the stream i posted above. this album features a bit of everything from all their albums, i think. though, perhaps not quite as well done on the other albums. but, this is easily another fantastic album from the band. they really have yet to fail me.
i would maybe rank the albums:
Detilj--Self Titled (tied for first)
White Blood Cells
Icky Thump--Elephant (tied)
Get Behind Me Satan
Get Behind Me Satan is my favorite, though I've just recently gotten into the the Stripes and haven't heard everything. Icky Thump has some great new tracks.

Big fan. I haven't picked up Icky Thump yet, but I'm actually not sure I want to. I got most of their other stuff, but from the stuff I heard on Conan (for those who didn't see, they did Icky Thump and a country song), I'm not likin' it. Icky Thumps okay, the song itself, but the country song turned me off completely.
Big fan, though.

You're talking about Effect and Cause I guess. It sounds way better on the album. The only songs I don't really care for on Icky Thump are Conquest and Catch Hell.

i saw them twice the other day in london, ontario. all through out this recent tour they've been doing small secret gigs around town just hours before the nightly big gig. i called in some insider info to find out where the secret gig was and saw them play 11 songs with only about 100 other people in attendance. it was rad. and the later show at night was phenominal. i've seen them about 10 times before, and this was quite likely one of the best shows i've seen from them. they did 'the union forever', which i've never heard them do live before, along with their captain beefheart cover of 'party of special things to do'. they also played 'little cream soda', and at the end jack was singing 'the big 3 killed my baby' lyrics to the tune of little cream soda....f**king great!!!!

Well, I did in fact see them this Tuesday and the were f**king increadible. We had to suffer through two less than decent opening acts, but it was well worth the wait. They came out and just broke out into a blistering couple of hard rocking songs that pretty much melted my face off. For me, the highlight was "Icky Thump," which has become my favorite song of theirs. The live version is simply fantastic and very spontanious. At the second verse, Jack stumbled on a couple of the words and just began randomly jamming and just kept going with it. That's rock and roll. Very powerful experience.

upon my first viewing, i was pretty indifferent to it, but thought it was cute. second time, i realized that i really like it. third time, i fell in love with it. its much more subtle, understated, and less creative than their other videos...but, i think that works for this song. the cinematography is beautiful, and the film quality is lovely. meg is extra adorable in it. and i love the little things jack does, getting a bit theatrical.

im with you on the dirtbombs. mick collins should be in the rock and roll hall of fame. those guys make exceptional music and are one of the best live bands in music today. but the von bondies really do blow. not only as a band, but even my personal encounters with jason he really comes off as a douche bag. their first album, lack of communication, is good (ironically, produced by jack)...but their other releases are terrible. and from what i've heard from their forthcoming album, things are about to get worse.

I just got both 'White Blood Cells' and 'Elephant' last night and I've listened to both of them. The only other one I need to get is 'Get Behind Me Satan,' so I think I can safely say that my favorite is Elephant.' To me, it's the most interesting record of theirs. The self titled and De Stijl are pretty pooly recorded, so that kind of turns me off to them, but I feel that they got their recording techniques down for their most recent four.
My favorite songs probably are Fell in Love with a Girl, Icky Thump and Let's Build a Home.

dude, the recording quality of the first two albums is one of the reasons i love them so much. its just beautifully primitive do it yourself garage rock at its finest. hell, the second album was recorded in jacks living room on all old school analogue equipment.

record label has been giving them a real hard time with their new album. and it shows too. i heard some of the tracks...they sound like s#!t. pawn shoppe heart was a s#!tty overproduced album...but at least it was s#!tty rock and roll. the new album has a whole new sound, and its really bad.
