Anybody been playing your old-school systems recently? Lately I've been busting out my NES and SNES quite a bit. Started a file on Zelda II: Adventure of Link, been playing a little Castlevania as well. On my SNES I've been playing a season on NBA Live '96 for some reason.

Anyone want to share their recent retro gaming experiences? Or we can just talk about old games. I don't know. I just got in a mood to make a thread.:(

I've been playing SMB 1-3 on my SNES thanks to Mario all-stars, Zelda and Adventure Of Link...(AOL... lol), OOT and Majora's Mask... Love my collector's edition Zelda game... Played Max Carnage last week...
My only nemesis is TMNT for NES... If only I could beat stage three (After the bomb defusing...) Cause it's one of the following: either I get a game over OR The blue screen of death...

That would be great. Something that SquareEnix should do---

You rememer SECRET of EVERMORE? You and your dog go through time and try to save the specific times you are in? Or how about ILLUSION of GAIA, where you are a telekinetic young boy who becomes the dark knight Freedan or the Ninja Shadow to save the planet and your friends? How about an anthology set featuring those two games, plus some of the hard to reach SNES games for both, like the original Star Ocean, or Secret of Mana? Release it with a buttload of extras for $30 bucks, and you got me at "Hello"!

Thread resurrection!

I was playing Mega Man X last night. Love that game...maybe as much as Mega Man 2. I know, blasphemy:(

Also I've been playing Link to the Past in my spare time. I just beat Blind the Thief last week, so that's like, 3 or 4 more dungeons to go if I remember right. Which I probably don't. Might start playing again tonight.

Also, lookie here at this awesomeosity. It seems the patent for the NES has expired so now making pirate systems isn't so piratey anymore. Check out this sexy momma: http://www.playmessiah.com/onlinestore/index.htm

It's slim, should play games reliably, and has rumble, which apparently works on the louder beeps and boops. It could get annoying but also a game like Contra could kick ass with it.:o

Too bad it's $60. I'd buy it if it were a little cheaper. The wireless controllers they sell are supposed to be good, too

Johnny Blaze
05-27-2005, 04:44 PM
Wow, that is pretty cool. But, my old NES is still going strong, so I'd have no real need for it. But, that rumble feature would be cool. Love to see how it'd work with a game like Punch Out.

Oh, and comparing MMX with MM2 is indeed blasphemy. :(
The first two MMX games were great games, but still can't beat out the classic MM games; MM2 especially. At least, that's my opinion anyway. :o

As for retro games...I've been playing the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy on my SNES lately; mainly sticking to the first two. It's funny, I used to be able to beat both of them, but now, for the life of me, I can't beat the Demon in the second one and, for some reason, I can't get past your father in the first game. :(

Recently, I've been thinking about breaking out one of the old school Dragon Warrior games, but I can't decide between DW2 or DW3.

Not Jake
05-27-2005, 04:49 PM
The DW games are pretty tedious to go back to, what with all the menu work for things like opening a chest or talking to people or unlocking a door. I prefer the Gameboy Color versions, which do all that with just a button, like you would in most other games. DW1 & 2 were on one cart, with DW3 on a cart its own. All exactly what I wanted. Same game, less hassle.

I lust for the original Final Fantasy cartridge. I need one. Especially one with a battery that doesn't piss away saves once a week.:(

There's an auction on ebay right now that I'm keeping my eye on, with Final Fantasy, Kirby's Adventure, and Kid Icarus along with like 18 other games (most of which I don't have). I hope it stays reasonably priced (though with those games, I doubt it).:( I have a nice 15-game...I don't know what you'd call it, case? Rack? Anyway, it holds 15 NES games and has these spring-loaded tabs on it that when you release one the corresponding game will kind of pop out. It's this great old thing that I've been trying to track down another one of for awhile. Anyway, back to my point, I'm trying to fill it with the 15 best NES games. Right now it's filled with the 15 best NES games that I own. I figure I have about 10 of the top 15 NES games in it right now, and I'm looking to replace the remaining 5 good (but not best) games with others (Kid Icarus, Kirby's Adventure, and Final Fantasy are among the 5 I want).

The ones I have that I already consider top 15 are:

SMB/Duckhunt (would like to replace this with SMB/Duckhunt/World Class Track Meet)
SMB2
SMB3
Zelda
Zelda 2
Castlevania
Tecmo Super Bowl
MT's Punch-Out
Tetris (maybe)

Otherwise I have games like Excitebike and Pro Wrestling and TMNT & TMNT 3 filling out the ranks. I only have about 25 games right now, so that's the selection I'm limited to. I have yet to get my hands on Mega Man 2 or River City Ransom or Metroid or TMNT 2, all of which I want in my top 15. I mean, I've seen those games, but not for prices that I will pay. Of course River City Ransom is kind of rare so I'd pretty much buy that if I saw it anywhere outside of ebay.

I kid, I'm not that much of a dick. Kid Icarus is the game I'll probably go after next. I haven't played it in over a decade, and, with all the talk of a new one possibly in the works, it seems like a damn good time to reacquire myself a copy.

River City Ransom is one I've got to get my hands on again as well. There's just so many NES and SNES games that I'd like to acquire/reacquire it'll be a while before my collection is where I want it to be.

I suddenly had the urge to buy a NES with a ton of games, the arcade paddle, some obscure games like Maniac Mansion. Now it's collecting dust on top of my VCR. :(
So disrespectful:(

What games do you all have? I'd suggest just picking up an old classic and forcing yourself to play at least the first couple levels. These games may not be appealing in abstract thought yet they'll win you over if you just get into them a little.

Let me check... Gyruss, Blaster Master, Mario/Duck Hunt, Maniac Mansion, Ninja Gaiden, Bad Dudes (Are you a bad enough dude? ), Smash TV, Pro Wrestling (Heheheh, Puma!), Super Mario 3, Guerrilla War (Underrated to say the least), Kung Fu, Iron Tank: The Invasion of Normandy, POW Prisoner of War, Operation Wolf (One of my favorite games ever, the arcade one anyhow. Nes one sucks on more levels than I thought possible) And I had Jaws but I shot it up with a BB gun... I think I've got some others hanging around.

I've got double copies of Guerrilla War and Operation Wolf, if you want them... Send them to you free of charge.

And disrespectful my ass, I've been playing the NES since the day it came out. :D I ran through all of the games I bought, than it just kind of didn't interest me anymore. :( It'll happen again though, one of those every few years kind of things. ;)

Never played that one, my brother pulled Crusaders out of the bargain bin right before the Gold remake came out and we both got sucked into it. We actually had to set up a schedule to play some days, haha... and it happened again with 8.

What was your party? Mine was:
Helaina, F Rawulf Valkyrie
Kisada, M Felpurr Samurai
Aramoro, M Human Ninja
Natalia, F Human Monk
David, M Gnome Priest
Lorelei, F Faerie Mage

Yes, Kisada and Aramoro are named after Hida Kisada and Bayushi Aramoro from Legend of the Five Rings... and yes, David's name is where you think it's from :D I loved my ninja at the end of Crusaders... Yeah, it was a hard to find game even back when the NES ruled the gaming world. I remember the only place I found a copy of it was at a Toys R Us; no other store had it. It was weird to say the least; I remember two of the bosses in the game: one was a giant watermelon and one was a leaky faucet (Yeah, like I said, it was a strange game :o).
Still, the two player co-op mode was damn fun.

I just won Mega Man 3 on ebay for $5.50. Of course the shipping was $4, but that's ebay for you.:(

The top 15 is getting closer to being completed. Games with * being the games I need.

JAKE'S TOP 15 (in no particular order):

Super Mario Bros/Duckhunt
Super Mario Bros 2
Super Mario Bros 3
Legend of Zelda
Legend of Zelda II: Adventure of Link
TMNT
TMNT II: Arcade*
TMNT III: Manhattan Project
Mega Man*
Mega Man 2*
Mega Man 3
Castlevania
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
Tecmo Super Bowl
Kirby's Adventure*

Alternates:

Kid Icarus*
Metroid*

Of course I don't really think the original TMNT is a top-15 NES game, but I kind of think I'll leave it there to keep the big franchises intact, what with the sequels and all. I break this rule with Mega Man games, because, well, I don't want to be pooping out the big dollars to pick up the rare and obviously less great Mega Man games (4,5,6). Same with Castlevania, but I really only like the first Castlevania on NES. I'll probably drop Kid Icarus from the top 15, because it suffers from being a lone game and I just don't dig it as much as Kirby.:o Same with Metroid. It really hurts me to leave Metroid off, but I have Zero Mission (the GBA update), and I just can't make myself want to pay money for the NES version. Even though I fully know that it's a top-15 NES game.:( That's what Turtle-love does to you.

Turtles 3 is actually better than Turtles 2. I mean, technically. Turtles 2 will always be top in most people's hearts (and my own) because of the classic levels and such. Flaming street with legions of foot soldiers, 3 little metal robots from the cartoon and then Rocksteady. As opposed to Turtles 3's opening level, a beach. With no tiny robots! They really don't compare.

And of course we've discussed the first Turtles game, which really isn't top-15 but has sentimental value to myself, plus I really want to keep the trilogy together on display.

I wasn't the biggest Contra fan ever. Heresy to most. Super C was better.:o Of course I wouldn't stick that in my top-15 rack either. Just my preference. Plus, picking up those games on ebay kills your wallet. Another reason I stray from Kid Icarus. Though I fully expect I'll be reamed trying to pick up Kirby, it's totally worth it. I love that little puffball.:o

Oh man, what a fun game!! When my brother and I were kids we spent hours playing it.

Does anyone remember a Genesis game called Beast Wrestler? You got to pick from one of a handful of monsters and fight in a big wrestling ring (it was really more of a fighting game than a wrestling game), and sometimes your monster would mutate into something cooler or a f'd-up hybrid of two of the others. I only dimly remember it, but it was a lot of fun, and I pwned with the white octopus thing. :D

I know, I know, I said I wasn't going to go after the late Mega Man games. But for this price, an exception had to be made. I think I'm just going to promptly put them back on ebay and try to get double what I paid on these 2 rare games with instruction booklets.:o Plus, I got Kirby! It's a nice deal for me.

Next up: Turtles II and probably a better-working copy of the original Turtles game (which I need to stick a deck of cards in my NES to pin down the cartridge extra-deep or else it won't work).

I'm also looking for a SNES copy of Power Rangers: The Movie. My buddy rented it for his like, 5th grade birthday party and we played it all night. It wasn't even that good of a game. It's just become legendary in my circle of friends.

damn I'm old. When I think of "retro" games, "Pong" and "Galaga" come to mind. You guys are talking about crap that was out when I was in high school/college.
yeah and some day people will be talking about the good old days when they were playing GTA3, Halo, and Smash Bros Melee, and the term retro will include those games. I'll probably kill myself when that happens:up:

Anyway, I just got Mega Man 3 in the mail...it works fine but it's one of those games you have to shove something in the NES to pin it down for it to work. Kind of pissed.:(

Also I got beaten by Spark Man on my first and second tries and that did not alleviate the pissanity.:(

Now to complete the fab fifteen, all I need is TMNT 2 and the original Mega Man.

I don't know if they ever made a Genesis version of Smash TV, but that was lots of fun.

Random fact: When video games first became big, Hugh Hefner was a huge fan... and actually had to be treated for wrist injuries caused by playing too much Pac Man. :D

actually, i think mega man, cable and iron man are the best three. In terms of Blaster teams, the best one would be BB Hood, Iron Man, and War Machine. All three of them have somewhat long blaster time, as well as a lot of hits per. I had used all three of them one time, and did the 3 person special, and got over 200 hits. Had I been smart, and just linked the combos, I woulda gotten more.

Goodwill, thrift shops, and garage sales are a retro game-hunter's friend. I usually stop in to Goodwill about once or twice a month just to see if they have any old games. Picked up Rival Turf complete with box and all inserts for $3 at Goodwill a couple weeks ago, and got Street Fighter for $2.

Got on ebay and won River City Ransom for $9.50 shipped. Also Zombies Ate My Neighbors for like $12 shipped. Not a great deal but a buddy of mine said he'd pay half since we figure the only time it'll get played is with 2 people.

The Display 15...

SMB/Duckhunt
SMB2
SMB3
Zelda
Zelda 2
TMNT
TMNT 2* - still need
TMNT 3
Mega Man 2
Mega Man 3
Tecmo Super Bowl
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
Kirby's Adventure
Castlevania
River City Ransom

14/15. Unless I find Mega Man 1 for a goddamn steal, it's not going in the top 15. I'm thinking about removing TMNT3 if I get Mega Man someday. Or, I may just put Tetris in TMNT3's slot. Who knows. I would put Mega Man 5 in, but I'm selling it to someone for $20. (which, if you figure I got it in a lot of 3 for $12.50, it cost me a little over $4, so selling it for $20 is just something I can't pass up).

I'm playing Mega Man 5 right now, trying to beat it before I have to sell it. I left the power on my NES so I can go back to the game later tonight. I'm through everyone but Crystal Man and Napalm Man.

A great thing about Mega Man games is that almost everyone beats the robot masters in a different order. My MM5 order is:

Stone Man
Charge Man
Wave Man
Star Man
Gravity Man
Gyro Man
Crystal Man
Napalm Man

And of course, I have orders for 2 and 3 as well. Haven't beaten MM1, MM4 (which I didn't really like as well as the others), or MM6 (which I plan on beating sometime in the near future). And Mega Man X, my order is kinda messed up, as I take on Chill Penguin but then Storm Eagle immediately afterwards.

Anyone else pick up any new (old) games? Or start playing any? Or have a Mega Man robot master order they'd like to share?:o

Not Jake, Why do you look for the original cartridge games for Mega Man when you can just play it on Mega Man anniversary?

......& coincidentally, Cable, Iron Man & BB Hood are the ultimate blaster team. Any person using these characters in a match is weak/cheap to begin w/ and are the reason that those type of characters are banned in local MvsC 2 tournaments.

Understandable (B-Cuz I still have my 2600 & the games) but the thing is, There are bonus features on that Anniversary game and you can even save progress on Megaman 1, 2, and 3 (Even @ my age, Mega Man 1 was ludicrously difficult).

However I did notice you mentioned River City Ransom. That is one of my top 5 fav Nintendo games! (Where was slick anyways?!?!?)

Gahhh that game made me tear my hair out when I was like 6.

I read in some strategy guide that Cut Man's stage was the easiest.

I beat it after probably 30 tries.

Then got killed instantly on whatever the next stage I picked was.

anyone here ever play Deadly Towers? The cartridge disappeared to somewhere years ago, but my brother STILL has a grudge against that game.

X, 3, and 5 are classics...the rest of your Mega Man games have been in slightly poor taste:(

I guess 6 played well enough for not having any memorable robot masters. It did have that Rush armor.:o Seriously though, 5 is practically the same thing and better (just like 4 is practically the same thing, and 5 is better than 4 as well).

As far as classic Mega Man goes, I'd say the order of greatness is 2, 3, 5, 1, 6, 4. With 2 and 3 being quite close at the top. The only X game close to those is the original X, which I would rank right up there with Mega Man 2 and 3:o

Since I stupidly as a child sold my NES, and more recently gave my SNES to my friend [although I still play it at his house], I've been at a loss for many of those great old school games.

Lately, I've been supplementing my fix through the use of ROMs, but the keyboard, or typical usb controllers just didn't feel right. What I ended up finding was this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8206305872&category=41059&rd=1
Granted I won my auction for only $7 [shipping included], it's the same thing I own. It's works great and really adds a fun factor to playing Super Mario Bros 3 again with a real controller instead of the keyboard.

Oh, and last summer I so picked up a copy of ikari warriors at a garage sale for free.

Battletoads (GB)
Mega Man (GB)
Super Mario Bros Deluxe (GBC)
Mario Golf (GBC)
Mario Tennis (GBC)

All utter classics.:D I'm especially happy about Mario Golf and Mario Tennis, my two favorite Gameboy games EVER. I hold them as the two best golf and tennis games ever, and they belong in the sports game elite with Punch-Out, Tecmo Super Bowl, and Ken Griffey Jr Presents Major League Baseball.

They've both got great tennis/golf gameplay, just perfect handheld fun. And the RPG elements! Mario Golf, especially. You get to walk your character around the clubhouse and facilities (driving range, practice green, etc), and it even has a SMB3-like overworld where you can walk to other courses and even a mystical club maker's house.:o As for Tennis, as I recall there's a magic pond where you can get some magic shoes or something.:D What a great couple of games. Honestly, if you've never played 'em, find them. Even on an emulator. They're both probably in my top 10 favorite games ever.:D

Oh man, I just remembered...when I was a kid, my parents were Christians, so they took in this needy blonde lady because her husband was put in prison.

So she lived with us and I loved playing this game called Panama Joe which involved a lot of jumping and swinging around and crap.

So she asks me if she can try it, I reluctantly let her ( knowing that she'll die within minutes ), but suddenly, as I watched her carefully, sometimes violently fumbling around with the joystick, I got incredibly aroused...so, for the first time ever, when she died I encouraged her not to give up and try it again, just so I could watch her handling the joystick.
