View Full Version : The Wacky Ass Pre-Crisis DC Thread
Ah, Pre-Crisis DC, my favorite era of comics ever. Where everyone was a bonafide god, Bouncing Boy was dangerous, and Superman on the top of his game strength and power wise.
To enunciate on the god bit, let me bring up the 60's Legion. Lighting Lad could "write" in space with his powers, and the huge, ridiculous letters could be seen for millions of miles in space. Cosmic Boy could casually move around thousands of tons of meteors. The Karate Kid, was, and still is the premiere fighter of comics. Matter Eater Lad's powers worked on the molculer level and he could even eat Inertron, among other near indestructable objects. Element Lad could transmute on a larger than planetary scale, and so on.
Not suprisingly, being the 60's, the females had lame powers. Saturn Girl's powers weren't nearly as effective as, say, The Martian Manhunter's are today. Phantom Girl became intangible. Light Lass... made things float. Shadow Lass... made things dark. Ah well. They still definitely had their uses.
Anyhow, the suspension of belief and escapism roles of comics were never stronger than most of Pre-Crisis DC... And, we always see instances of it thrown around here. From stories so out there that everyone makes fun of Superman and Batman years later, to feats that are on the tip of almost everyone's tongue most of the time. Anyhow, enjoy yourselves. :)

Wow...that is pretty...wacky.
I'm glad Supes isn't so ridiculously overpowered anymore. :o
Well, yeah, I agree. But, things were evened out back then. You had teams like the original Fatal Five running around, The Galactic Golem... All types of Kryptonite were available in abundance too. :D Not to mention everyone else was more powerful too. I mean, growers, like Colossal Boy, could grow to 4,000 feet, no big deal. Sun Boy melted all of Antartica, he could write in space with his flames and be seen for millions of miles. Hell, Lightray even in the 70's created small suns more then once.

Yeah, I love Pre-Crisis DC, probably my favorite era of comics ever. So.. erratic. You have 60's Legion, which was amazing. Comics ahead of their time, dealt with a lot of serious issues, death and morality... you know, coupled with Superboy yanking around solar systems. :D Things got a bit more serious in the 70's, DC trying to mature and what not, but we still got some insane feats of strength and the like. And I trust most of you have seen some of the off the wall Pre-Crisis DC covers, Jimmy Olsen constantly turning into a giant turtle, elasti lad, radioactive beast, yadda yadda yadda. What I'm going to do here is dig into those comics, elaborate a bit. So, without further ado, lets... uh... get... wacky? :(

I like Post-Crisis a whole lot better, gone are the homosexual overtones of Batman and Robin (not counting the movie), Superman is beleiveable and is more humanized, there is continuity now, the quality of DC today is outstanding, heroes such as Blue Beetle, Captain Marvel, the JSA, etc. are in one universe now (not counting the Anti-Matter Universe, Vertigo Universe, Wildstorm Universe, Johnny DC Universe, and soon to come All-Star DC Universe)

Of course and they are bringing back some of the good Pre-Crisis elements back into comics such as the Legion of Superheroes, Supergirl, the Lex's Kryptonite Battle Armor, etc.

Superman was more humanized Pre-Crisis then you'd believe. Superboy's potrayal was extremely human, and including his immense power, ever more so.
You say they're all in one universe... Except, you know, a dozen others. :D

Part of vertigo is the DCU.
And the homosexual overtones were long gone in pre-crisis by the early 1960's

Braniac (Leagues better then he's been potrayed Post Crisis), For Superboy, The Fatal Five, one of the best villian teams ever. Lot of awesome villians that didn't make too many appearances... The Galactic Golem, The Atomic Skull (Post Crisis version sucks), Black Rock. Pre-Crisis Lex Luthor was much better on the whole, lot more dangerous. Although, I'll admit him being angry about losing his hair was a little over the top.

You actually like Pre lex to post? Truth about Supes villains is on the whole, it doesnt matter pre crisis or post, his rogues suck. The only time they were respectable wasnt even in comics, it was in Superman: The Animated Series. Man, do Timm and Co. know how to turn losers into badasses.
I do prefer Pre-Crisis Lex. He was just so much more... efficent. Plans were more intelligent, he was up there with Doom. Might not of always won, but that's to be expected, especially in the Pre-Crisis age. Hell, even in the 60's DC once wrote a What If of sorts where Lex killed Superman, which was nuts.

I love Pre-Crisis. It's the truly Iconic forms of Superheroes. When you think of DC you ussually think of Pre-Crisis. Neal Adams' Batman, really powerful Superman, Neal Adams' Green Lantern/Green Arrow. They were simply iconic and I think comics should try to get back to that. I don't want Superman moving planets, but he should be more Iconic.

"Pre-Crisis" DC is a really broad term, seeing as how it did stretch for decades and decades. Superman in the 70's was way powered down for the most part, he could barely move continents. 60's Superman was an absolute beat however, Superboy used to tow around galaxies. :D

A solar system is almost unconceivable... And a solar system is almost nothing compared to a galaxy. I'm not going to go into great detail about it, if you know you know and it just makes it that much more impressive.
Another thing I want to say... PC Superman, even in the 60's, worked because his base of operations was the universe. Current Superman is a lot more Earth bound, Pre-Crisis Superman was in another galaxy almost every comic, fighting some super tech savy villian or something more powerful than him. I like that though, the whole "Always something out there better/more powerful than you".

Definitely. Pre-Crisis Luthor is one of my favorite villians. The whole industralist behind the scenes Lex of today just doesn't do it for me.
Hell, I love The Pre-Crisis Superman too. Always using his mind, well, usually anyhow. Not to mention an extremely consistent use of his super speed and other powers. Now a days they're simply used when it's convenient.
And for all of Superman's power Pre-Crisis, he still lost a helluva lot more than he does today. People didn't ****ing job to him back then either. Feh.

I know. I hate when people say he's too powerful. Anyone remember Mongul???
Pre-Crisis Supes actually had a BRAIN. He didnt just fight his way out of everything. And the sci-fi elements were great. The original "Death of Superman" story is tons better than the doomsday one.
That's what i like about the JLU cartoon. It mostly feels like silver age, with the sophistication of today's stories.
Mongul ****ing spanked Superman in his fist appearance. And, uh, every time after that Pre-Crisis actually. Mongul used to be smart too. Tricked The Martian Manhunter and Superman into fighting. Ever notice Jim Starlin has a thing for creating extremely powerful characters? Thanos, Drax, Mongul, some others that elude me... Oh, Adam Warlock.
Stories from the later 70's especially are extremely complicated though. I just finished reading an Adam Strange/Superman team-up, and I could barely wrap my mind around it. I consider myself pretty intelligent, but the comic is definitely from a different time. Than again, being smart was a good thing, America was trying to make every kid a minion for tommorow by making them smart. :D
Superman uses his brain (Nothing new Pre-Crisis) and admits that there are some things even he can't do. Which is mainly why I included these pictures.

Speaking of powering down, Darkseid is another example...
He went from "The Great Darkness Saga" powerful to getting his ass handed by superman constantly...
Darkseid's been all over the place. Even well into the 90's he was pretty powerful... He casually killed a being, Agogg, who thrashed Lightray and Orion. Pretty much DC's Kurse, who took apart Thor with his belt of strength and Betta Ray Bill. I think it all really went down hill in Hunter/Prey, with Doomsday utterly wrecking Darkseid. Well, the writer, Jurgens, said that Darkseid killed Doomsday, but Doomsday, you know, came back extremely quick and layed Seid' out. Ah well, not nearly as bad as Darkseid's Omega Beams being matched by Superman's heat vision or deflected by Wonder Woman's bracelets, which is complete and total ****.
Wonder Woman easily picks up The Statue of Liberty. A few pages later, she admitted she coulden't defeat a few dinosaurs. You've got to love the consistency of 60's DC sometimes. :D

Wait a minute. If Superman is pushing against the ground on Earth to move it, wouldn't that technically look like he was just doing a hand-stand? If there's one thing about pre-crisis that bothered me, it was a lack of understanding of physics.

And, uh, the goverment? :oNo I got him right when Superman first came out he use to jump all over the place till the radio show which gave him the power of flight along with all his other powers though he still very much acted like the golden age Superman on the show. That is the Superman I like. He was more like how Batman is in the comics today. Meaning he really didn't work to much with the cops and so forth that the cops wanted to bring him in but never could.
When I say goverment are the reason why you have the Superman you do now is really before; before they stepped in Superman was just starting to help out with the cops but still was dark and with the powers he has now. But people put up a big fuss over how dark they are or this and that so they changed them. Superman was easy because he was already starting to work with the cops and all they just said lets make him nice and have him completely work with them and so they made him into the boy scout we have now. As well as Batman, he was changed from being dark to being like Adam West though it was harder to change Batman and it almost killed him in the comics. Batman and Superman use to strike fear into the hearts of people when they first started. They still do but not like how they use to and people use to fear Superman more because of his powers. The Silver Age is because of the goverment really. Thats why I say I still love the golden age the stories were more in depth and it was just nice art work back then.

Hehehhee. :D
And All-Star, I appreciate the effort, but could you edit your posts? I mean, include the links if you want, but don't post the actual pictures. Clutters up the thread, even more so considering it isn't even related to what I'm doing. Thanks.

Does during the Crisis count as Pre-Crisis?Because Psimon's death always cracked me up. It went something like...
Psimon: Well, now that I've destroyed Braniac, I'll kill Luthor and take over the.... *crash!* oh, them's me brain meats on the floor. *thud*
The actual Crisis is kind of, well, hard to explain. Wally West remembered it, but no, for the most part, the actual Crisis is for all intents and purpose, Pre-Crisis and not rembered by the majority of the DCU.
You just don't see this kind of energy thrown around very often anymore...

Gotta love the Pre-Crisis heroesthat is the most awful thing I have ever seen
In one of the most insane feats in comics ever, Superboy tows around a galaxy worth of planets. There are as many as one billion to a hundred billion planets in a galaxy... And although he probably isn't moving all of them, since life isn't on all of them, this is still unbelievably insane. Oh, and he's doing it casually. And across the universe.

Superman takes the force of, and contains, an exploding star. Impressive considering such explosions can destroy solar systems.

I just gone reading the entire run of Infinity Inc. (too bad it got cancelled), and damn I loved those characters. I really wish Fury had stuck around as WW's daughter though, instead of Crisis pretty much retconning everything. Sometimes I wish they had stuck with the whole Earth 1 and Earth 2 deal.
Understood...
What do you think of the pictures, anyhow? :)

Have you read Infinity Inc, X? It was a great title, and even if the post-Crisis fixes moments were great (they handled the Fury's new past and stuff quite well), I felt it was time that could have been better spent on furthering the character's future rather than 'fix' up the past.
Ah, I don't think I've ever read any of that, actually.
If it's as good as you say though...

Just imagine it as the Earth-2 Titans. It had some bizarre characters, but it was pretty chock full of development as well. There were a few odd things here and there, but that's mostly with any title reaching 50 issues. It introduced some great characters, most of which have been forgotten by now or had some type of injustice done to them, which is sad to see.
It wasn't a title that was overtly popular or mind-blowing but consistently great, written by Roy Thomas and his wife. Solid artwork, and MacFarlane's run on the title is absolutely great from a visual perspective as well as how it pretty much went against usual art conventions, where you'd have the characters holding the panels or featuring the characters at the middle or the side. Bit splash-page happy from time to time. Following artists also had a nice synergy with Thomas, but it does seem the MacFarlane-Thomas team was the most solid.
It's especially sad to see how they incredibly ****ed up with Northwind these days.

Superman and Supergirl take on BlackStarr, one of the most powerful comics villians ever.
Also, take note, this occured as The Crisis was happening. High end Kryptonian feats for that time, but still... Some pretty crazy stuff here... Speed & durability (Superman gets smashed through a planet without a scratch) wise.

I love Pre- Crisis.....
Superman - The Golden Age Superman was great. Loved the Silver Age. Loved Curt Swan's Superman art. Oh how I miss Pre- Crisis Superboy!! Loved Lex Luthor- World's Greatest Criminal Scientist! The Brainiac-Luthor Team! The Phantom Zone Villians, Supergirl, Lana Lang and her rivalry with Lois Lane. Clark as a newscaster on WGBS! Villians... The Terra-Man, The Parasite, Bizarro, Mr. Mytziplx, 2 Different Metallos ( John and Roger Corben!) The Real Fortress of Solitude!
Batman- Loved The Golden Age Batman especially the Pre- Robin version. 1970's - early 80's Batman.... Neal Adams, Denny O'Neil, Steve Englehart, Marshall Rogers, Gerry Conway, Doug Moench. Loved the Pre-Crisis Hugo Strange, Rupert Thorne, and The Joker where great Joker stories were told!
Loved Infinity, Inc. The Earth 2- Robin ( grown up Dick Grayson), The Earth 2 Huntress/ Helena Wayne ( daughter of Bruce and Selina) Loved Earth 1 and Earth 2.
Wonder Woman ( yeah I know everybody bashes me for this but I liked it!) Steve Trevor the love interest and the secret identity of Diana Prince.
The Ceb-Man!
Thanks for your input, Ceb. :)
Now this is a forcefield. Most don't know it, but Pre-Crisis DC had the best tech this side of the 853rd century.

That's hilarious. How did that end?
Superman and Metropolis were shrunk. He managed to get back into Kandor and work up a plan... Braniac had put himself into suspended animation for the long trip back to his homeworld with the shrunken cities so he could repopulate his planet. Superman worked up a plan, and escaped with all of the shrunken cities. Brought everything back to normal, and Braniac continued on going through space without the people to repopulate his planet.

I just have to wonder how you start collecting city's in bottles? Do you start with making those ships in a bottle... maybe go on to shrinking sailors to man them.... then move on to railroads or shopping malls, or do you start with small towns or suberbs, or do you just go for it and start shrinking major metrapoliton areas from day one?
Superman takes a star exploding (A supernova) without a scratch. Or, as he put in, "stunned for a micro-second". He wasn't expecting it, coulden't prepare for it as well. He then easily drives himself through half a planet.

Heh, that thing was a suprisingly good character. Made itself a body and stuff.
Now, for your viewing pleasure, in it's entirety, DC Comics Presents #43.
Excellent comic, all in all, with two very serious, cosmic threats... And several insane feats. Just my type of Pre-Crisis DC. :)
Ah, also, Wildfire is shown as a serious powerhouse, even by Pre-Crisis DC standards... The way he was originally shown, and the way it always should of been in my opinion. Notice, when he lets loose and blasts Mongul, Mongul goes "Errrrrrrrrrrg". ERG was Wildfire's original name. Not suprising considering this story was written by Paul Levitz, one of The Legion's most prominent writers.

What opinion?
What opinion?
He says it has the power to kill him, and then he calls it a trinket right after that.
Superman and The Flash vs. Nam-Ek, one of my favorite Pre-Crisis "villians".
Basically, he's got the power set of Pre-Crisis Superman, and he's completely invulnerable to boot, even to Kryptonite. Tragic character, to say the least. I'd say that Pariah of Crisis on Infinite Earths was influenced by him.

Nam-Ek wasn't destroyed by the Kryptonite or anything... He was teleported away for story reasons. The whole Nam-Ek thing was a three issue arc... Four, even. Unusual for the day, though.
Superman pulls a Mr. Majestic (Speed Wise) and creates an antidote to a previously unknown of disease.
Nice little strength feat too.

The fight scenes and action in this one just seem to flow so well though... The desperation is great as well. Enjoy.

That was definitely one of the best ones I've read here as well! Very good stuff.
Yeah, the whole thing was great. It was a three issue arc, which back then was pretty serious.
Superman ends up constantly pushing forward through time because a cosmic villian is stopping him from returning home. It shows Luthor dying in the future, infusing his essence with this machine... Superman is eventually around a million years old, and he gets dragged by this cosmic event, along with Luthor's device, through time. He literally loops through time and ends up right back where he was at the beginning of the three issue arc. He lives through his childhood, his Superboy years, but really quickly. And then right back where he was. I personally loved it. :)
The Sprectre vs. Azmodus, an extremely powerful demon. And when you can hold a sun in your hand, you know you're strong, as those things are freakin' heavy.

The Spectre vs. Shathan, an even more powerful demon who's Azmodus's boss and, basically, the Anti-Spectre. One of the most insane comic book covers ever that could come only from Pre-Crisis DC, and a fight that's even more ridiculous than the Azmodus one. I don't think I've ever seen any fictional character get quite as big as the Spectre does here. Enjoy. :D

None of the photobucket pix are working...

Ah, I didn't know anyone still cared honestly.
Anyway, I was planning on finishing this thread on another board, but I could do it here too. I've got hundreds of new scans.

One of these days I'm going to dress up as Superman, do a handstand, and tell people that I'm moving the planet out of the path of a big meteor.

People are always complaining about how powerful Superman was. How about a few scans of Validus to put Superman into perspective.

Hah!
Validus is going to be a part of my Pre-C respect thread.
Scary how Superboy himself admitted Validus was a dozen times more powerful than he was.

At least. When the Suneater got to the Milky Way it had just eaten a nearby galaxy. If it was an average size galaxy then it was approximately 200 billion stars. Validus faced 2 different segments each 1/8 of the whole. Each segment thus possessed roughly the power of 25 billion suns. Although Validus lost he was still on his feet and still willing to fight.
Yeah, the Legion watching that galaxy blink out before the coming of the first Sun Eater was about as terrifying as Silver Age comics got.
The entire fight with the SE... The fact that the Legion assembled some of their greatest enemies to fight it... Says it all.
Suprised someone else knows about that entire time in comics.

I read it when it came out. That makes Validus about 25 thousand times more powerful than the Sentry even if you take the million exploding suns bit literally. You should snap up Validus for the DTL. Last I knew he was legal without the GL ring.

Pre-Crisis was so much cooler.
70s Batman & 70s Superman = Rulers.
World's Finest!
I know this isn't pre crisis but can one of you tell me which comic this is from? It's good example of Superman's speed anyway
