Well, this board is pretty slow, but I figure that this way we can at least keep one thread up there so we can keep the Ultimate discussion together. Hey, it worked great in the Spidey forum!

SPOILERS FOR #16

Anyways, just read UFF #16, thought it was pretty well done. I like that they did something with the skin cells that they mentioned earlier in the arc. I also liked that they are balancing out Reed's big brain with Ben's logic and reasoning. I really liked the talk last issue where Ben rationalizes that maybe the guys left at the end of chaos and destruction wouldn't be the nice fluffy guys afterall, and here Reed sees that Ben was spot on. I can't wait to see how they fix Johnny, and what effect it has on his powers, or how Reed and Ben escape there little problem. I figure that if Reed wanted to he could just stretch his chest out through the opening and form a seal over Ben and his faceplates.

I liked Ben's reasoning as well. Definitely some good dialogue between him and Reed through out the entire N Zone arc, particularly the previous issue about the inhabitants...

I liked it fairly well. The little rant Reed gave on the second visit to Nihil was sweet! (I made it my sig and all). I like the creepy feeling this arc has to it. Very alien-esque. The one thing that did bother me though was the implication that Reed would rather stay and do science, than race home to get help for Johnny. That was cold!

I don't know, as soon as Sue says that it's his powers that are killing him, Reed seems to snap out of it and gets set on going immediately. I think it shows that Reed still feels guilty and responsible for all of this.

Yea, he did, guess I didn't really notice, kinda read it quickly.

Whats up with Ult Annihilis? What is he exactly?

It's like everywhere I go there's another Vic Van Damme, another Mole Man. They're all the frickin' same. The universe is this fantastic place, full of ideas and, you know, cool stuff. And everyone else seems to think it's somewhere to setup their frickin' butt-hat franchise.

cant imagine 616 reed saying that......

i like the uff but they make doom a freaking spaz thts a good a reason enough

Emerald Knight
03-16-2005, 10:10 PM
 I think that this is an intriguing take with the character of Doom. Granted, this is only one person's opinion. Yeah, I can see why some would be upset the drastic changes: the "armor," the powers, etc. I don't think that he's so much a "spaz," as he actually thinks of himself to be perfect. In his flashbacks we saw how he was raised. He was beaten to "perfection" by his father. He could never be wrong, in his mind. If anything went wrong, it was somebody else's fault, it couldn't be him: Victor was "perfect." That kind of characterization intrigues me. Technically, Van Damme (I too hope he changes his name, it'd be kinda renouncing his humanity, I think, which could be pretty cool) is part of a destroyed royal lineage, but not many know that (in the Ultimate Universe).

I think that this is FF year one: The characters, yes even Doom, are considerably younger than when Stan wrote them out. With Doom's background (in this story) it's kind of cool. He considers himself perfect. For him to be wrong, would bring pain. He can't feel the pain when he's wrong, so in his mind, he's always right. I really hope that the preceding sentence made any sense. He also knows how to draw a crowd, either with tools or without. Yes, he's not the tyrant we all know and love, but just because something hasn't happened yet, does not necessarily mean that it won't. He's still young. He'll hopefully find the tricks of the trade as a true ruler. We only saw a glimpse of things to come. Things can only (and hopefully) get better from here.

But, hey. To each their own. :)

TheS4ndman
03-17-2005, 12:26 AM
yea i thought of that too but i guess i just took dooms defeat to seriously...but the fact he cannot accept that he is not perfect makes him weak:doom:

Some people are never going to get that. Trust me!

Personally I would be really dissapointed if the Ultimate universe characters were simply cardboard cutouts of their 616 counterparts. The Ultimate Marvel Unviverse is supposed to be different. They made it that way!

One thing people need to realize is that Ultimate Doom also has plenty of room to grow. Now instead of being introduced to this evil genious that has his empire, we get a chance to see the development behind it. That's a strong point of the Ultimate universe if you ask me, the fact that now all the charecters that are introduced are more thought out and fleshed out than the 616 charecters usually were upon introduction.

Emerald Knight
03-27-2005, 08:59 PM
That's how I think of this. It's FF (and Doom) Year One. We get to SEE Doom make his mark as a ruler in the making.

Zaptoitnow
03-28-2005, 01:57 PM
Which is the real strength of the Ultimate Universe. Now writers that want to add some big developmental aspect to some charecter can so so without having to retcon it in. They just introduce the charecter with these aspects to begin with.

Hey, considering Ultimate Reed has no organs, does he need to breathe?

Zaptoitnow
03-28-2005, 10:59 PM
I wouldnt imagine that Reed would have designed the suits the way he did if he and Ben didn't need to breath. I can't imagine him not Having tested it either. Just because he doesn't have internal organs doesn't mean his body has found a new way to absorb oxygen. But then again, who really knows.

Lord Valumart
03-29-2005, 11:12 AM
well, i think he only designed the suits be cause it was an alien place, and there might not be oxygen, just as a safety thing.

he still doesn't know what he can/cannot do.

Issue #16 is good. In fact, it's the only Ultimate book that I've ever bought, much less liked. That just goes to show that it's almost impossible to **** up an FF book. But saying that, the main reason I bought the issue was because of Ultimate Innihilus. He looks really cool and I like his characterization. I probably won't be following the series after the next couple issue unless something equally cool comes along. The previous Ultimate FF issues didn't really grab me either, not that they were technically bad or anything.

Waiting for #16 to hit on wednesday, interested to see how Reed and Ben work their way out of this.

Besides this, what figures from 616 FF do you want to see? I can't wait till the team finnaly goes public, and the kids are allowed some contact with the outside world. I want to see the Ultimate Yancy Street gang, lol. Would love to see Alicia, and maybe even Namor, if he could be done well.

the n-zone arc has to be my fav right know for the UFF ,Doom comes in second ,as mentoned above...the whole reed and ben talk was the most interesting thing in the book,,,,,it leaves you thinking but I can't wait to pik up the next issue tommorrow

Zaptoitnow
04-06-2005, 11:43 PM
Got #17 today, great issue. It has a good scene with Ben fighting basically everyone, as well as some decent lines between him and Reed. I really like the dialogue that those two can get into, it really feels like they are friends and like Reed enjoys teaching Ben whatever he can. I also love that Ben gets to vent finally.

Ant-Man
04-07-2005, 11:47 AM

cant imagine 616 reed saying that......

Alright, I knew they made the characters younger, but reading this knowing it came from Reed shocks me... I know it's a different version but... Why even make Reed young in the first place?
Can I ask how they got these powers? Because they definatly were not on a mission out to space. I don't think NASA would be too happy about a bunch of kids going out to space. Is "Van Damme" a young kid as well??? (By the way, I think the design of Ultimate Dr Doom is terrible, but thats a different topic.)

Lord Valumart
04-09-2005, 05:59 AM
they got their powers via an N-zone experement that went wrong, Reed discovered the N-zone when he was just a kid, 13 or some thing, got drafted by the "Think Tank" thingy, built a big N-zone thing so he could send things in to it, Ben turned up, they watched, Van Damme changed the positioning codes, acident=powers.

"Doom" is also a young kid, about the same age as Reed, he also got transformed by the N-zone acident.

Zaptoitnow
04-09-2005, 09:41 AM
I think the updated orgin was done very well though. Doom thinking his calculations were right and Reed's wrong was what destroyed Doom. The same kind of event giving the FF it's powers. I actually think they did a very good job coming up with a new orgin that nods to the old one in so many ways.

I'd like to mention Reed is 21 in the Ultimate Universe. A kid he is not.

Lord Valumart
04-09-2005, 12:24 PM
well, he's probably 22-23, if you beleive that the 3 arcs have happened over several months, since it would take a while to construct all the stuff they've used in them, that ship alone could have taken atleast 5 weeks.

Well, many people got their wish today, the Ultimate F4 are now in the public eye. I loved it when Reed tossed General Ross the gun and he went all happy on him, lol. Had me cracking up. I also really like Johnny's charecter in this book.

I agree with the shifting remark, but most of the unfortunate events on that list were accidents. Could've happened to any super-smart kid who works on a multi million dollar project and gets his friends and loved ones turned into freaks.

i never use FP for comics, i always use it for figs and such. but i only get there like 5 times a year. if i see a comic i think will be good, i'll go to my local comic shop the next day, ah, the wonders of non large chain comic shops.

and your welcome.

Lady Stormcrow

Lord Valumart
05-27-2005, 02:34 PM
dear god no!!!

don't that, you'll ruin everything in you that made you buy comics and sign on to these borads!!!!!

we should burn every copy of those mags.

Lady Stormcrow
05-27-2005, 02:35 PM
They are so similar, I wouldnt be surprised if they are all made by the same company, in the same factory. So It'll be easy, just put a spanner in the works. mwa hahaahaha. Now the people of britain will not know when Jordan has her next boob job etc.

Lord Valumart
05-27-2005, 02:41 PM
no one cares about Jordan, or the midget shes marrying, he got lost in her breats once, or "how Jade got back on top" or "why Angelina Jolie likes Pepsi":confused:who needs to know that?

Lady Stormcrow
05-27-2005, 02:51 PM
It is extremely annoying. This is why more people should read comic books, something new every week. And they can be educational (Im sure to learn more about literacy from a comic then an article about Jade and how 'She is like sooo hot right now, whateva '.)
(The Xmen film actually helped me in a test I did some years ago. I just remembered magneto saying 'A bolt of lightning into a huge copper conductor.' Once again proving that you can learn things from comic-lore.)

Lord Valumart
05-27-2005, 02:56 PM
comics have helped me through so many tests, more notably imaginative writing, just think of a story that fits the question, then turn it in to something humorous, and then fail tha paper.....

well, when i had this batman reading paper about the movie i answered the entire thing really sarcasticly and passed!!!! i love the fact that most of the other people failed:D

Lady Stormcrow
05-27-2005, 03:20 PM
Wait, one of your tests was on the Batman film??
(or did I read that wrong)
And I am also guilty of putting a scynical twist on my tests. On the last one I spent a paragraph complaining about the governments targets, and I had been asked to write a letter about uniform in schools! mwa haha. Though after I learnt that it isnt a good idea to cheek the boss of the guy marking the test. (oops)

Lord Valumart
05-27-2005, 03:41 PM
yeh, the first batman movie, it had an extrac from a review or some thing, the questions were allabout how the Joker uses humor and to name an example from the text and so on and so forth....

but i once spend 3 paragraphs on complaining that ties were evil things when i was writing an essay on some thing or other.

the worst i've done is...challenging my teaqcher to watch Reservoir Dogs, Python movies, Die Hard and the Ussual Suspects to try to find thre faults with them all, they replyed by putting a * next to the paragraph and saying that it was a stupid thing to write and that the paper could have been more constructive.

i say balls to them.

WTF???

Lady Stormcrow
05-27-2005, 04:09 PM
really? eeeeeewww.

Its so sad when people want to hurt other people like that.

In fact thats another reason more people should read comics. They spread a message of justice etc, so I bet if more people read them, it would decrease the yob culture that's growing.

Lord Valumart
05-28-2005, 05:28 AM
yeh, it's true.

but people should read comics, then firemen could do their job, with out being pwlted with rocks.

Lady Stormcrow
05-28-2005, 12:17 PM
Yeah. Oh, I cant wait for the next UFF, but I think in the last one, the new artist made the thing kinda look like he was made outt've cake.

Lord Valumart
05-28-2005, 12:20 PM
yeh, some peopel go over board with the Thing and thw rock skin, they should keep it simple, large rocks mostly and smaller rocks only on the face and arms.

Lady Stormcrow
05-29-2005, 01:11 PM
yeah, you really shouldnt mess with a classic look unless you really know what you're doing.

Lord Valumart
05-29-2005, 01:37 PM
yeh, some people just go mad with tiny, really tiny, bits of rocky skin.

Lady Stormcrow
05-29-2005, 01:52 PM
yeah. But sometimes they dont do enough, and he just looks like a walking rock with a couple of cracks. (or cake)

Lord Valumart
05-29-2005, 01:54 PM
yeh, it all depends on how lazy the artist is. but they should all be made to follow a set code for all Marvel characters.

Lady Stormcrow
05-29-2005, 02:55 PM
I dont know really. sometimes its good to get some variety. You can practically tell when a spidey was drawn purely from the style. It can make them more contemporary. I mean, the guy was great, but imagine if artists were still drawin spidey in the Ditko style.

Lord Valumart
05-29-2005, 02:57 PM

theres this thing about some artist in x-men drawing Beast like a cat

no problem with Man-thing, never even hear of him until that thing in UFF.

Lady Stormcrow

Hey, a load of people drew Beast like a cat, because that was his 'secondary mutation' right?

Lord Valumart
05-30-2005, 07:46 AM
no, his secondary mutation was the truning hlue and furry, not looking like a cat.

Emerald Knight
05-30-2005, 09:01 AM
I don't think that Beast turned blue and furry due to mutation. Wasn't it because of a laboratory accident of some sort?

Lord Valumart
05-30-2005, 09:19 AM
i beleive he drank some form of formula designed to stop his mutation, but it just made him mutate into the beast we know, not the cat thing.

I bought the latest UFF yesterday. And however much it pains me to say this (because im a huge fan of Kubert) I really liked the artwork in it. Its different from anything ive ever seen, and I found it to be really striking and effective, especially for johnny, Ive never seen him drawn like that before. It was realistic, without being photo-like. It was like pop art. I have to say though, the writing wasnt as witty as it has been in this book, and the evil girl was kinda creepy, and I dont like the fact she out-smarted reed at the end. Other than that, I think it was money well spent and I cant wait for next issue. I like the two parter stories, its a nice break from drawn out 6 issue ones.

I honestly hope UFF outsells NA. Millar's Avengers > Bendis' Avengers by a LONG shot. PLUS... Land is is a better artist imo than Finch, even when Land's women usually look very similar lol. But that preview had me sold, along with the crossover idea.

That Think tank mini arc was awful! I found myself skipping pages, or pretty much flicking through it cos it was so dull. And the artwork was so washed out...

Loving the look of the next arc though - Grag Land is quickly becoming one of my all time favourite artists - he can draw any character from any book extremely well!

I LOVE UF4 but the last 2 issues have been crap. I have never been a fan of Jae Lee's artwork and this just reassured me that I'm not missing anything but avoiding books he does. I have followed UF4 since issue #1 but I skipped reading the last 2 issues (still bought them) because the artwork was so bad.

PLEASE tell me Jae Lee is done with UF4, I can't take much more of his art.

Zaptoitnow
06-28-2005, 11:01 AM
He's done, thank goodness. I just dont like the way he draws people at all. I actually really thought It worked extremly well with The Sentry, but that was more because everything was supposed to seem a little off, and that exactly what his work made it look like. It looked like I may or may not be looking at the Marvel U through a crazy man's eyes. Same with that Hulk fill-in arc he just did, crazy magic hulk insanity going on. Outside of that mini and the Hulk arc, I have not really enjoyed his work.
