I think a lot of great manips are ruined when the artist messes with his hair. That freakin' spit curl and plastic hair look drives me batty. But in this manip, his hair looks natural, and there's even an inkling of the S curl - not too much - not too little. It's just perfect! And Lana with her necklace is a nice touch. :up:

I did exactly what you've described - I left the hair mostly natural, but just *tweaked* the spitcurl enough to make it there but not there. I actually had it darkened too, but it just didn't feel or look right with the rest of him, so I took it down a bit.


PS: Thank you for leaving out Superskirt, 'Rene! *sigh* I'm Superskirted out. :( :p

Absolutely brilliant Serene. The collage works beautifully. The only thing that ruins it in my eyes is the border. The piece itself has such a look that it almost seems like it's just a digital copy of an existing paper work. (which is a really nice touch). The over digitalized border kinda takes you away from that feeling.

Now for the actual piece. So often you'll see over saturated colors used to mask imperfections in a piece. But the over stylized colors in this work actually add to the weathered paper look, which is a very nice choice. The characters are all represented in a way that mirrors that stage in his life perfectly, with a subtle layer of metaphor, even if you didn't originally intend it. Lana and the farm in the distance behind him, indicating his past. Not his primary focus, but never forgotten. Lois by his side, but still a little out of his reach. Then there's Lex. Right there, big as life, looming over him =)

It's interesting you say that, and I'm inclined to agree. Looking at the bulk of artwork that I've done, it's fairly rare that I will put a border on anything. I think the reason I did on this particular one was more of a frustration with the size. Initially I had a simple black border on it, but then I started playing and in my wine-induced overtired state, I just kept the resultant border as you see it. But in hindsight, I do agree with you, I should have left it alone, or with a very thin black border only.

Thank you for the concrit, I do appreciate it. And yes, it may not always seem like it, but I'm actually very purposeful with every picture and color, and even lighting that I use. A lot of stuff is so subtle that no one but me would ever know or care, but that's okay. Ultimately, this stuff is for my own personal satisfaction anyway. Having others enjoy something is just gravy. :)

That picture of Lana - it's from the Pilot episode, her first scene where she helps him pick up his books. The Lois picture is one of my very favorite shots of her because that looks like a more mature Lois of the future, the one that Clark is going to fall in love with.

The weathered paper look is something I'm rather fond of, when it works. I"ve become way to fond of grungy stylings in my stuff, and in this I indulged in both.

Here's an older piece I did where I felt the ancient paper feel worked out just the way I wanted it to.

But this isn`t entirely my work.
The superman one I just added the Head that I drew once of welling, the cape, the shield and the belt, and changed the color of the body to blue.

The batman one I also changed the physique a little bit because the original artist had drawn him way to defined. and I just added the new bat logo.

the wonder woman one I had to fix certain t hings because it was to rough and not detailed enough.
The flash was almost as it is, except that I turned sides and had to change the logo to face the right way.

The green lantern one I just added the green and black colors from this drawing that I found. And I also drew the face to make him more like the GL from the animated series.

And finally the MM, I just changed a few things and had to add the right side of the body because something was in the way.

I can see him doing this little show for Chloe, his mom, Lana, etc. - ie. "Fine, you wanted it, here it is. Happy?"


As for the Aquabro-knockoff, I like it a lot compared to other options. Would prefer it with sleeves for him, as we really don't see him in sleeveless stuff other than "Noir" and when his shirt is completely off.

Routh did ok for his first role, don't get me wrong, but I never looked at the guy as intimidating in any way. At times - hovering out Lois's Window - he came across as totally insecure and emotional.

I know Superman is the big boy scout and not a Batman-type figure who scares people in that sense, but he's also immensely powerful and there should be a certain level of awe when people encounter him. In that photo above, Welling looks like he could really f**k someone up if they crossed him.

The one item i don't like about some of the manips is the hairline -- Clark has a much better hairline that plopping routh's hairline on top of a welling face

There was a scene in 7.02 - Kara, where Clark looked like he was starting to get the spit-curl going. I could only think of "that's it, Clark is going to start doing his hair better this season" haha

Cape part looks fine but I really don't like the red faux-undies - they look like diapers. Either change the part just above the belt to the same red (making a red diamond-shaped stomach-thru-crotch panel), or the part that you have plus the inner thighs, or all four of those sections.

Not sure you need the belt either - simplify to a yellow oval around the belly button area, where the oval belt buckle traditionally is. Belt looks OK when the red is at & below the waist & inner thighs; otherwise, it looks extraneous.

Well, that`s why I wrote manip/drawing, it`s a mix of both. I simply drew the superman suit on the picture of welling flying there. It`s a picture from the season four premiere where he flew.
I thought I`d try a new technique on the way I draw the suit and it turned out great.

Except for the background and the human looking part of Metallo, it`s all photoshop drawn. It just looks better when it`s drawn than when I just manip the same pictures.
The lois one was bases of Teri Hatcher, because I always thought she was the perfect lois lane, But I didn`t make it look 100% like here, but the resemblance is there though.
the flying superman and the superman with his arms crossed is something I`ve posted before but I just thought they went good with this poster.
The big drawing of Wellings face there is a picture from season one, I just had to draw him a bit older, and it ended up looking pretty decent. The drawing look of it fits much better with the hair than it would have looked if I just drew this hair on the original picture.

One of the best works I've ever seen on these boards. The aged look on Wellings face is amazing and there is so much detail put into it. Metallo is out of this world. Love the huge S on the suit.

SteveThat is a great picture but what would have made it better is if instead of having him look at the box you have him holding his cape like in that one episode. The background is basically some of my previous artwork. I gave it that particular look because It`s supposed to represent his thoughts as he`s reading the comics.
This picture is supposed to be of Welling doing some research before putting on the suit.

Glad you liked it. That picture from Comicfan is pretty good, but it`s not really something I plan on doing because quite honestly it`s too simple.
I like to be creative in my art and try to do stuff that very few people do.
It`s a pretty rare thing that I see people coming with really realistic looking pictures/drawings/manips of superman. They`re usually just pieces of pictures put together, but there`s usually something that makes it look like an obvious manip. I try my best to avoid that, but it`s not always I succeed.
I`ve always been on a quest to try to make raise my abilities as an artist and try my best to make realistic stuff. Like making the blue tights look like actual tights in stead of blue body paint, the same with the cape, try to make it look as if it`s real, with shadows and the look of there being a realistic attachment to the tights, the same with the rest of the costume.

This is a episode still that I wanted to do a scene toward the end of the Smallville series finale depicting Clark wearing the Superman costume for the first time as he's going to fly out of the Fortress of Sollitude just like the scene from the famous 1978 Superman film. I also put some more details and designed the Superman costume on how it should fit in the SV universe. Clark Kent is of course Tom Welling, Jor-El is Terence Stamp. Was a little tricky in terms of using the IWarp as it worked out eventually as I have to straighten up Welling's hair by giving him a more Superman-ish hairstyle, kinda of keep it updated as the one from the Reeve days.

My God how do you guys make this stuff. Nice artwork.

Basic Photoshop.....you could learn to do this stuff with a few weeks of pratice. Just learn how to make clean masks. Basically, it comes down to how good you are at detail (aka, time) Youtube has some good basic lessons. Though, you should take a class if you wanna be legit.

It's fun, you can do it for hours. I get lost coming up with ideas and blending them all seamlessly into a giant myriad of expressionalist images.

There's really nothing you can't do with photoshop. Though, stay away from fur/hair. It's pretty difficult, and you can make someone's head look like a helmet with all the clean use of your brushes.

OH, and image quality is the #1 thing to look at when trying to photoshop. Stay away from anything but hi-res BMP or TIFF files, or you get that nasty "dirty" look when you zoom in to use your brushes.
