This particular manip was meant to focus on these three and not the rest of the league, but it did cross my mind to do a full JL manip while I was making this one.


Of course, Bale is pure awesome as Batman and definetly one of my favorites. I have a Superman/Batman picture in the working, but I'm not entirely sure what costume to put on Batman, the spandex one or the rubber suit.

Today I was watching the "Infamous" trailer from the Supermanhomepage and noticed the below banner on the side of their home page:

first off, great manip, but could you update the costume a bit? lower the trunks, different s, different boots and different colors, and that would be pretty awesome picture. good job though. thats a good picture of his face to use. :o)

That ain't a nod to STM, that's just a total rip off ala Superman Returns. I don't want Jor El giving no big speeches, I'd rather Clark reject Jor El's will & decide to become Superman on his own, as a choice that he feels needs to be made. That's the kinda Superman I can respect.

Thanks Zorex.It was intentional. The strong sunlight from above him makes him appear very well lit up in the upper area of the face while darker in the lower parts.

Batman can't get away with no undies anymore because he's a more grounded serious hero who broods. it works for Superman because of his innocense. You don't change Superman, his undies are part of his defining feature as much as The hockey mask is the defining feature of Jason Vorhees or the knife gloves are the defining feature of Freddy.

Mikes work is so great , you can really see what a great modern version of Superman , Tom would make .

These are the things that make it look so modern to me.

One is the simplicity of the cut and materials of the outfit (frou-frou and excess are not in right now; plus the thinner fabric has *always* fit better under the Clark clothes). I love that his cape looks like thick, soft, almost velvety silk and that his outfit looks comfortable and easy to put on and move in - a second skin, not armor. The boots are for looks and to cover the details of his anatomy to protect his identity, not to protect his feet from danger.

One is the colors: a red that people think of as a warm RED; a blue that's a strong, warm BLUE; and best of all, real GOLD rather than yellow in the \S/ and belt. Not yellow-gold, not gold-colored fabric or plastic, but material that seems to be actual gold yet is flexible and soft rather than hard and cold. Not that Supes would waste money or want the attention of bling, but it's the purity and the connection to the sun symbolism that works for me - it shines, like Supes is supposed to. And it's a warm gold, not a blinding white gold.

I'm really hoping that at some point during Smallville (preferably not until the last few episodes), the show breaks it's "no tights, no flights" rule, and we get to see the big guy don his suit for the first time. On this next piece I wanted to focus on his life as Clark and Superman.The yellow is supposed to represent what physically fuels him, the green is what kills him. A showcase of his strength and weakness.
A simple picture of him sitting at his desk that was to represent the part of him that's always waiting, observing, always alert and working hard to expose the crimes of Metropolis so people are aware of the dangers around them. He sits there, fully realizing that this part of him can never be the guy that everybody likes, he can never fully be himself. So he adapts the personality of a shy and quiet, yet rather excellent reporter that finds that by working hard and staying focused on his mission and out of the spotlight ,is the only way he can really exist as Clark Kent the reporter.
He's fully aware that he has to sacrifice a great deal of things as Clark Kent in order for his alter ego to exist and do his job properly. And that's what the picture of superman posing is supposed to represent. Always ready to rip that shirt open and reveal the red and blue suit that people have come to know and love as Superman. He realises that truth and Justice can't always be fought with physical efforts alone, but sometimes the barrel of the pen can have an equally important effect.

I have to say Mike in all honesty, after seeing the string of brilliant manips you've done over the yrs & how you can actually see big strides in progression in each one, I feel this latest one to have taken 4 big steps back. First I think it would have been better to pic a picture of Tom that wasn't from season 4 since he still looked quite young back then & the pic you chose wasn't one of my favs. Also I feel you could have made the trunks a lil bit bigger, I feel it to a be a bit like a piece of string at present time. Also perhaps making his hair shorter would be an option also, a bit to long for Superman IMO. Overall though it's good work & your Ck is beyond perfect. The hair feels very reminicent of CK's hair in Superman 3 which I liked very much. Keep up the good work man. :applaud:woot:


[EDIT] Sorry also forgot to add that I think lightening the blue a bit so we can see more of the texture on the suit would be good also. One thing I always liked about your manips is the detail & texture of the suit. Always blows my mind. that is all.

Also perhaps making his hair shorter would be an option also, a bit to long for Superman IMO. Overall though it's good work & your Ck is beyond perfect. The hair feels very reminicent of CK's hair in Superman 3 which I liked very much. Keep up the good work man. :applaud:woot:

Thing is Steve, I got a new job about 5 months back, and It takes up most of my time, and I don't have time to do those big complicated drawings/manips anymore. I have to settle for something way way smaller than what I originally envision in my mind. Take this picture for instance. Ahhh ok, well that's pretty understandable man. It was a good effort never the less& your still ahead of the game when it comes to maniping. I'm sorry if I came off to harsh, I have a tendancy to do that without meaning to. That manip you did of TW as Superman in the barn was just breathtaking though. I've shown that to ppl & they've sworn by thier own lives that the pic was 100% authentic, that's how good you are man. keep up the good work fella & enjoy Smallville tomoz, gonna be a good one. I tried some dean cain pics but none i could get were full body shots, same with Reeve. I just had to work with what i had. Thx for the feedback bro!.

Dean Cain's suit had it's own flaws as well. I don't really think there's been a live action superman suit that hasn't just looked like a child's halloween costume to me. That includes Reeve's.

I agree man. It's funny, the first, best hero is the one with the most problems. no one can write him accuratley on screen, no one can make a adequate suit that looks like a suit, not a halloween costume. casting Superman is harder than finding Jesus. I didn't mind the material of the SR suit but it looked to me like the whole suit had a very thick padding on underneath it that made it looks so fake, like someone had stuffed socks down thier pants to look bigger. I think the material of the SR suit, minus any & I do mean any padding, plus the material of something like the Dean cain cape for the new cape & have the undies not be undies at all, have it be a pattern on the suit rather than a seperate element. have the 'S' on the chest be slightly raised but not made out of metal or rubber like the SR suit, have it be the same material as the suit just raised slightly, not as raised as the SR 'S' but you get the idea. Also have the boots be a patern on the suit much like the undies so it doesn't feel sperate from the rest of the suit.

Based on what I've heard the pre-Superman Prototype suit, suit... might look like. I did a wee mock up of what it might be like.

I thought its maybe something similar to Neo ala Matrix, I couldn't find a decent sized photo of Neo from the Matrix with coat & T-Shirt exposed so I did this with the :super: on the buttonline of the jacket, meaning it seperates when unbuttoned etc

It's not the "new suit" it's A suit. they never said that it would be replacing the final superman costume in any way. They've just said it's going to be a suit that clark wears.

Yes there is, but I failed to get it to look exactly like it because the original pictures was low-res and I honestly couldn't make out all the details, so I half-assed it, which is why I wasn't entirely pleased with it.

Thanks a lot. I've done a lot of Welling as superman art in the past, but I can't honestly say that they have been as visually appealing as this one.
I really wanted to combine a certain look on his face, with the appearance of movement in his hair to sell the illusion that he was really flying. Not really sure just how well I managed to bring that into this drawing, but it'll have to do.
I kinda imagined this shot being as soon as he shot into the skies after having flown out of the FOS, and as he's going at a tremendous speed through the clouds, we get a moment of slow motion footage of him with a serious look on his face, kinda symbolizing the years of hardship he's gone through to get where is now, who he's become, and who he's always be known as...The Superman. I know that smallville is working on a increasingly smaller budget each year, but if they ever do decide to put that suit on him, I really think they should focus on making that last shot something very similar to this. It would be such a great way to end the series.

Based on what I've heard the pre-Superman Prototype suit, suit... might look like. I did a wee mock up of what it might be like.

I thought its maybe something similar to Neo ala Matrix, I couldn't find a decent sized photo of Neo from the Matrix with coat & T-Shirt exposed so I did this with the :super: on the buttonline of the jacket, meaning it seperates when unbuttoned etc

it would be interesting by mid season if he has something like this if he goes back to reds/blues. If he is tinklering with costumes ideas this season it could be a fun thing for them to play with and maybe homage some different superman/superboy-konel/monel looks. Like for example in lois and clark's pilot he and martha are going through many costume ideas before he settled on the blue tights and martha adds the S shield.

well we will just have to see what goes down with this black outfit he is wearing and over the course of the season. We know he is likely going to have this black outfit up to at least episode 10 range. So that still leaves 12 episodes if the season to see what goes down.

Superman's Origins... maybe each phase of outfit will reference a different aspect of clarks personality--- Steel/Eradicator/kon-el / towards becoming Superman rather than introduce them as separate characters.
