Hi Pat, Bad Superman and Serene,
Thanks for the warm welcome - it's equally good to be back in touch with you guys.
Haven't been posting around the boards for the last few months... partly because I've been busy, but also because I became increasingly disheartened about a certain major motion picture currently filming down under.
It also seemed that those posters with something interesting to say on that issue, such as you guys, were increasingly marginalised by repetitive morons.
Still, the Smallville forum seems to be a haven for reasoned discussion about one interpretation of the Man of Steel's mythology.
Long may it continue! :)
welcome back.

nice, could you use the flying pic from commencment from last eseason. that pic had some muchintensity.
Ummm... We know that Routh has dark black hair as the casual shots of him as Clark show off. Because of lighting of the genesis camera for the Superman pics his hair looks dark brown. The only flaw that exists is one that isn't even really there. Routh looks 10x better. His facial features are much much more in line with what Superman should look like.

To me there isn't a single thing about him that says "Superman."Thanks, Trip. My sentiments exactly. The more I see of the interloper, the more disgusted I get. It re-heeeely bums me out too because I was so freakin' excited about the film last year. Now, all the wind has left the sails and the only thing saving me from drifting in the Sargasso Sea is 22 more wonderfully entertaining hours of SV, and the knowledge that I'll finally get to see my Superman discover his true destiny.
lighting excuse, you guys just never learn. the same excuses and the cape still is maroon and leather. sames excuse on lois and kid and we find out today she forgot about superman real wuick and had a 5 year old son with richard white...I STILL say Singer's sneaky little twist (probably to be revealed near the end of the flick) will be that the kid is Superman's, but we'll see. Not that I really give a rat's patootie mind you 'cause Singer's boy will never be Superman to me, but that's besides the point.

Although I think Tom Welling would have done an awesome job I don't really think we can critisize Routh just yet, lets wait for the movie! From what I hear though Tom Welling would have had to quit SV to do that movie, which makes me happy he didn't do it, cause 22 hours vs 2 hours, I will go with 22.

There is no excuse, his hair is jet black. Check the CK pictures. It only looks dark brown because of lighting from genesis camera.

Well I wasn't feeling too well today, so in order to cheer me up, I went and posted my favourite Welling Manip in the SR boards in support of a guy who said the real sucessor of Christopher Reeve is Tom Welling. I'm sure they will bash the hell out of me, but who cares, it made me feel a little better.
Everytime a new Routh image comes out does someone have to manip a crappy Welling pic on?

I've tried to make this point before, but I guess you just don't seem to listen to me:
Just because someone posts something you think is baiting you, doesn't mean you need to take the hook into your mouth.
You're not going to convince anyone here. If that's your aim, posting photos that make fun of Tom isn't the way to a Welling fan's heart... I know it's just made me really annoyed with you. AGAIN.
In any case, posting that as a response wasn't in anyway justified by what Rakmon posted.
He was being snarky, you went into downright nasty.
Bottom line:
I think you need to learn to respond in kind: When someone pulls out a water pistol, you shouldn't pull out an ouzi....

And they really shouldn't. What's done is done. I wish everyone would just freakin' move on. I truly think that most sane, mature people have.. but the trolling keeps rearing it's really ugly head.
By all accounts the movie is looking to be awesome.. That's great news for all the people who are dying to see this film, casting and all. I'm not personally that excited, but I'm happy for those who are.
We've also still got a full season of SV to come, and it's sounding like it's going to be amazing one - possibly the best ever. Now THIS I'm excited for.
Really.. just put the trolls on Ignore, life is so much easier. A little joking around is one thing, hell, we all joke around.. but trolling (i.e. only posting here to to take passive/aggresive shots at TW and SV) shouldn't be tolerated or acknowleged.

...We've also still got a full season of SV to come, and it's sounding like it's going to be amazing one - possibly the best ever. Now THIS I'm excited for...DITTO! I watched Commencement again this morning and thought about some of the potential story lines for S5. S4 was fun and interesting, but S5 is going to be the ballz! And not fer nuthin, but I'll take another YEAR's worth of a Superman that touches my heart over two hours of summer movie popcorn fare ANY day of the week.
Suffice it to say, my anticipation for September is almost agonizing! :D

I think that says it all right there. I think alot of fans think that Superman (the real one as they see it) is about the suit, the special effects, the fights, the great blockbuster ride, the Godlike aproach. And because Smallville is too human, they label it like Dawson's Creek etc etc.
Superman is so much more than that. Tom Welling, Gough, Millar, Loeb (why would even possibly the greatest Superman writer and DC Comics - by the way SV is the only live action production in tv or movie who is ACTUALLY supervised by DC - even associate with the show if it wasn't true to the essence of the character ?) and company have all shown us that.
And the fact that it got so popular and Welling (the star from the little tv show as they say) got so popular but for the first time got acepted as a Superman ppl believe in (and he doesn't even wear the suit !) and was by far the people's (the vast majority of it as no one is an uninamity, sadly not even Chris) choice and even got Chris's aproval, is one tough pill for so many people to swallow.
And they can't acept the fact that even now with more pictures/footage, so free minded people are not willing to eat up what Singer (I guess we were supposed to just because he did X-2) and Warner are trying to shove down our throats.
That's not to say it won't be a good summer ride, a well directed special effects product.

Overall, Im happy that we have both. It does sadden me to see people not excited for both. Its really a great time to be a Superman fan. Im going to give Routh a chance because he deserves that. He did beat out alot of people for the role. Even though Welling will always be Superman to me, just like Reeve, Routh should be given the opportunity to at least prove himself IMO. He could suck, or he could essentially be a lesser Reeve only. I would have liked a new take on Superman, but at least its being based on a previous version with tons of merit.
Anyhow, back on topic...

Of course, because Routh was the only option since last July.....Hey, if Routh turns out half as good as most people/fans/reporters were saying the reports, Routh will be a hit. And Singer will look like a genius for finding this guy.
I agree with most the statements above, Serene and Dark...it's a good time to be a Superman fan right now. There's no rule that says you can't enjoy Smallville and SR. (I personally do) However, as I've said before, to me Smallville is pre-dinner salad to the huge course to follow. After the reports, I'm more excited than ever.....and Sept. can't come soon enough either.

I'm a big fan of that series as well. It reminds me a bit of how SV is showing Lex. In his mind, he's the hero. That's why he always feels justified in his actions.
P.S. - The other day I was re-watching Slumber on dvd. Didn't you guys felt shivers down your spine in that Clark/Lex dream sequence in which Lex hits him with the japonese sword ? The dramatic music and Rosenbaum's performance in that little scene were right on the money.
"I'm gonna dedicate my life into showing the world who Clark Kent really is !"
And Tom's face and his plea for Lex to wait and hear him out was priceless.
Just a little gem of a scene.

Yeah and you got to think that SV is a show that tried to do things as realistically as possible. Just see on the dvds how they explain the meteor shower which in nowadays would be the only thing to prevent all the satellites and gadgets we have from seeing that a spaceship is landing on Earth.
Whether is now or later on, how long would it really take for a billionaire like Lex Luthor to find out that Superman is Clark Kent (which he already does in some comics) or even that all the mysterious/heroic things that happen in SV have to do with Clark ?
Personally I prefer it this way, not only do I understand Lex's motives for being a villain more (instead of how some fans prefer to see, which is a guy who basically was born evil which just doesn't happen) and why he feels so betrayed but I can understand why he prefers not to expose Clark.

I think Lex's theories on Naman and Sageeth will come into play as to why he doesnt expose Clark Kent as Superman. He will see it as his duty to protect the world (in his own screwed up warped way)

Really. Its a good read is it? You know I've never read a comic book.In THAT case, may I suggest either Birthright or Superman for All Seasons to start with? Both are origins. Cruising further back, Man of Steel is also good since it too is an origin. You can get TPB (trade paper back) and hard cover versions of these series at any comic book store.
I think it's a LOT more satisfying for somebody who's never read a comic book to start with the basic story and then branch out from there if you think you might like it. There's also "old" Smallville comic issues you can read if you need an even more rudimentary start. As a SV fan, if you *don't* like the SV comics, I'd say comic books are probably not for you. Comic books are a lot of fun, but they're not for everybody. ;)

Oh, and btw Pat: I bought Hush (both the first and second tpb) and I loved 'em... they're beautifully drawn and have entertaining stories.

Thanks for the rec.No sweat! If you're into the art, the best Superman series I've ever pawed through by FAR is Kingdom Come. Oh. Muh. Gawd. It's UNBELIEVABLE. Alex Ross, doncha know. He's the king.
I looked for both of those books at Borders, with not much luck, but I think I've seen them on Amazon. I'll take your recommendations. Thanks.:)Yeah, I'd just go to a comic book shop. It's easier, cheaper, and more fun.
SFAS was written by Jeph Loeb and provided a large part of the inspiration for SV. The characters are drawn a LOT different - Clark, especially LOL - but that's okay. There's a soliloquy at the end written by "Lana" about Clark that's amazing and very appropriate. I think I have it transcribed at home. If I can find it, I'll repost it. You'll like. :D
Birthright is the most recent origin and is DC "semi" official, depending on who you ask. In Birthright, Clark is friends with Lex in Smallville. Imagine dat? Hee! ;)
You'll like both TPB's, I'm sure. Let us know what you think after reading 'em. They're fairly short and you can probably breeze through both in less than an hour. Kingdom Come, on the other hand, might take a little longer. There's so much to take in - and it's an Elseworld's tale, which means it's very much out of general Superman continuity. ANYTHING can happen in an Elseworld's comic.

It's lengthy. Not quite as bad as Crisis on Infinite Earths, but definitely deep. The way Ross draws Linda Carter... err... I mean, Wonder Woman... you're gonna be amazed. ;)

I don't say that I'm better because my post count is higher. That's asinine. These are people I've never heard of (and likely some of them are an alias of someone) or talked with so for them to come after me is meaningless. They have no opinion... in my opinion :) Just because I don't agree with everything SV or TW doesn't mean I'm not a fan of the show. I never said you were not a fan, you wouldnt be here if you were not. Your negative high horse BS gets on people's nerves. I for instance notice your reactions to manips. If its a good welling manip, you'll find something to trash talk abou it. But if its Routh, one of the same 3 pics everyone uses, you'll applaud them. No matter how average and overdone they are. Its really irritating.
Now you go on and keep defending your additude, thats fine, it'll never change. But some of us prefer treating others online with respect, so you'll have to excuse us for feeling like you are disrespectful.

Heya folks, there's this really neat feature this board has that makes it seem much more peaceful and friendly....it's called the "ignore" feature. There are some people who have been on the top of my ignore list for a very long time...but I digress. I can't say how wonderful that feature is for lowering blood pressure, etc. It works almost as well as that handy dandy, hard-to-find bugkiller spray they call, "trollaway". :)
Just a friendly reminder to those of you who need the relief!
Speaking of the topic above, does anyone have an ultra high res version of that great Welling manip where it's just Superman's head and shoulders on the right lower corner, in front of some aqua-colored glass-looking buildings? I really liked that one, and I also can't seem to remember who did that one...sorry. But it does make wonderful desktop material.

Has ever anyone around here that tried to make a video manipulating Tom's image in a Superman suit? Or does anyone knows someone who did it?I've seen a LOT of TW/SV manips, fan trailers and vids, but I don't recall ever seeing a video along the lines you suggest above. It *could* be done of course, but gosh, it would require a lot of work, and some pretty high tech CGI software to boot.
But for what it's worth, I bet we'll get to see the real deal IN the show. Might just be a quick glimpse, but I honestly don't think they'll deprive the fans of something EVERYBODY has been waiting to see for going on five years now. G&M know it. The WB knows it (understatement LOL). And perhaps most importantly, TW knows it. ;)

I wish that i could be as optimistic as you are: Tom Welling in a Superman suit? Doubt it, specially because of Superman returns. I doubt that The Wb will actually permit a "sort of second suit".
Don't get me wrong, i think that Tow Welling is this generation's Superman and i was disappoint of him not being in the movie but still i don't think that the movie divison will aloow it. Yes, flying again but the suit? i don't think so.
Besides, there's been such a war about Tom Welling and Brandon Routh than if we actually see Tom Welling in a Superman suit, WW 3 will start in these foruns. :D

I guess it takes all kinds, but I'll be in the trenches next to you, dzb. No matter what.
Bring it on!
As for the suit: Clark needs to don the suit, it's the logical conclusion to his series long character arc.
It would be cheating Clark of his destiny if he didn't, and it would rob the fans of the payoff that we've all been expecting (or should be, for those that aren't).
He needs to wear the suit, even if it's only for a one scene as he flies off into the sunset (literal or not).

I totally agree with you Triplet but sometimes logic fails when it comes to Smallville :(
My guess is since we have a Superman movie, the movie division from the Wb will say that it can be only one Superman and won't allow a "second Superman" showing up.

Uhm, the two franchises are seperate.
Everyone has said that: Millar & Gough, Singer, I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of them at the moment... I should be in bed.
But there is no reason, going by these statements, to fear that the film division will say a thing to SV about their supes NOT wearing the suit.
I would wager that the suit design would be vastly different, so why would features care at this point really?
'Sides, it's BJ that's the "second superman" anyway...
Tom's been Superman since the Pilot. (The suit is just costuming, Clark IS superman.) I don't think you have much to fear in features keeping Tom from pulling on the tights.

Clark was born Superman.
His Superness is due to his physiology and his innate goodness, not him wearing primary colored spandex. If that was the case, then anyone in the DCU could pull on blue tights and become super.

One of the MAIN reasons Smallville has the potential to be REALLY good this final season is because Singer is VERY cool with G&M. Not only that, but he actually respects Smallville's audience (which he has stated numerous times). Something that can't be said for any other directed ever attatched, or merely mentioned in any relation to SR.
I, for one would just like shirt-rip...no more is needed as far as I'm concerned. The show has pretty shown the transformation from Superboy(clumsy invisible freshman) to Superman (everything in between, The shirt rip, fade to black)
I wouldn't call BJ the '2nd Superman' at all...You could say the same for Tom IF he had been casted (Since the final director, Singer, didn't have him as his first choice at all) Whatever the messy story is, one thing is for certain, Singer made the final decision, not some clause in a contract. Otherwise, we'd be an ANOTHER director right now....(and I think you can thank BB and Nolan a little for that final hint of confidence from them)Onto a tangent here, when was the last time you heard a director or writer (when asked point blank) 'What's the budget?' respond with, 'I don't know it keeps going up'...THAT alone tells me that Singer's hands weren't tied. He had final say ALL along, which is why BJ is donning the cape. And the WB is trusting him fully, and probably has ALL along.

I have to agree with just about everything except "

I would wager that the suit design would be vastly different, so why would features care at this point really?" They would care especially after the bad taste the Singer suit has left in many people's mouth.
Im pretty sure Singer doesn't want Tom wearing a suit, and having it look better then the one in the movie, and having Tom look better as Superman over Routh.
By the way Routh is the 2nd current Superman yes... Tom was here first.
Case closed on that one.. :)

That's a pretty good point. One way for them to stop that to happen or delay it anyway is for them to renew SV's contract for a sixth season so the suit appearence is delayed and Routh gets to go first. It would be clever really (it's a case of if you can't beat them, join them) because by now this is just a case of stubborness. They know Welling is the favourite choice but since they made the mistake they are sticking with till the end.
But I wouldn't rule out they buying out Routh's contract in the future and put Tom in the role or to do a separate franchise. Or in the worst case, Tom replacing Routh after his 3 movies.
Anything's possible.

How many of you are so disappionted that Tom is not going to be in the upcoming film adaptation, that you refuse to support the new film?
I'll support the next series of superman films after this new one bits the dust and smallville,Tom Welling and Routh are has beens.
Hopefully that'll be 10 years from now 2015

I don't agree with that at all...I used to about a year ago, when he WAS the overwhelming choice. A poll today, would look much different from a poll this time last year IMO.
