Tom Welling as Superman Manips

I got an idea from a fan costume I saw once. Instead of just haveing that symbol on the belt, have a bunch of differnt Kryptonian symbols ingraved all over the belt with that \8/ symbol in the middle like that, but ingraved into the classic circular style. Whatcha think?

See the Cain suit I think is one of the reasons Tom may be fearful of looking a bit ridiculous in tights. Now Chris had the ability to make you forget that he was indeed in tights (and I'm sure Tom will be the same way) but he had a much better suit to work with, so did the Superboy actors. I hope that when the suit does appear, they will be able to find the right one with the right colors and materials to avoid being too campy or a disaster in maroon.

Do you remember the 4th Season L n C episode where Superman is talking to Dr. Klein about having children? Dean Cain positioned a 10 inch object in his pants that was unbelievably hilarious and obvious and appropriate to the scene. I'm looking forward to the DVD release to see that one. :D

The first one looks like crap, I did it at a lot higher DPI and photobucket downsized it automatically, the image I made was very crisp and clean with no blur, the red just jumped out at you. It was just to have a little fun, each body part was put on from seperate photos so it does look a little of, the whole cape was just airbrushed in.

Wow....just wow. I love everything about this pic. I even love the colors on the suit. The pale yellow actually makes the S almost glow. And Tom of course there are just no words. I might actually take a flying leap off of a tall building if I thought this Superman would save me!:up:

I always liked the more volumnious capes... It was a bit disappointing that SR's wasn't more full. (The suit had other problems too, but I won't go into details...)

Finally saw that today, not as bad as I thought it would be (had some enjoyable parts even) but not nearly perfect either...

After seeing virtually HUNDREDS of Welling-as-Suerman manips, I've grown somewhat critical in my old age LOL. I appreciate the time an effort involved in making manips - I've done a few myself and they're not easy - but many just don't look right for various reasons. Sometimes the face is elongated or squashed, heads are too big or too small for the body, some have clone artifacts and/or color mismatches while others just use poor poses or overall composition. The "wow" factor is a rare one indeed for me these days.

This manip by Zing is one of the rarities:

Technically, it's close to perfect. But it's not the technical aspect that blows me away, it's the magnificence. If there was ever an image drawn from the collective unconscious of what Superman should look like, that's IT. He has a magnetic charisma and presence - a perfect body that conveys both grace and power, and a preternatural face that's comforting in its benevolence while still being compelling and assertive.

The pose is simply beautiful in Zing's manip, as are the colors. And that suit is perfect; my GOD, don't fix it - it AINT broke! LOL Bright, primary colors; light, flowing cloth cape; thin, clingy material that defines and complements his physique w/o hiding it; flexible boots that allow for a straight ankle and pointed toe during flight; wide, open color teasing a very masculine chest; and a larger logo to cap it off. Yeah. We're good. :up:

And the best part? With the right costume designer and green screen set, THAT's what Welling would look like in that scene. That's him. That's Superman.

You can also see that weird rib thing going on in the chest area under the suit. I'd blur that out. It's kind of distracting. :confused:

Don't worry, that version was done pretty quickly, and it's still a work in progress. But I'll have a better version done pretty soon, and I'll definately fix some of the problems you have with it.

The hair doesn't bother me at all in this manip. In fact, I like the look. But the body is just... I dunno... not right. He kind of looks like he's standing with his arms out, like a Russian dancer (you guys know what I mean.) It's just ... weird.

...his arms are up and out - like the I Dream of Jeannie "blink" pose. (I'm not being sarcastic.) Notice the position of his left elbow (on right side of photo). The whole arm from shoulder to elbow is also foreshortened since it's pointing into the camera. Compare that with actual pictures of Welling's arms and elbow in the same stance...

Other than a birth defect LOL, there's really only two things that would cause the arm to be visually foreshortened like that. Either the pose is intentional (arms held up), or the chest is inflated (naturally or via padding), which would cause the arms to push up and out. Having seen the profiles of both actors, I kinda doubt it's the chest.

It wasn't a slam. Trust me, you'll *know* when I'm being snarky. I don't hide it. In this particular situation, I was being very matter of fact. I gave examples of situations where his arms would appear foreshortened as seen in the photo. Don't read any more into it; there was NO insult intended to either actor in what I wrote.

Godfall was definitely "out" there...

*LOVE* it as a costume (much more flattering than the red undies!). It would look fabulous on TW - but he just doesn't play a dark enough Clark for me to want to see him in black and red and silver.

Shoulder areas evoke Spidey a bit too much at a quick glance, actually.

Here's a gedanken... Get inside SV Clark's head a bit. Assume he does go through the whole process and gets himself a costume/suit. Would he:
a) choose something homey that hearkens back to his plaids and red/blue outfits, the clothes in which he seems the most comfortable?
--OR--
b) choose something slick and Lexish and more Metropolis-like, RedK Clarkish, an outfit in which he'd be much less recognizable since everyone he knows pretty much sees him as Plaid Clark? Or would he be too tempted to go Red?
--OR--
c) have one of each outfit, and wear one or the other depending on whether he's on RedK or not?

My favorite is the last option... Would have the fun side effect of making people wonder whether there was one schizoid superhero, two superheroes, or a superhero and a supervillain-in-the-making...

Nicely done as a picture, in all (would give the fingers some stronger bones... the guy has huge hands, and his fingers are pretty thick all the way down)...

In terms of the uniform: colors are nice, and some of the seams are neat, and it's a great pose, but:
* collar is WAY too high - Napoleonic military-style neckbrace
* um, midsection, um looks too much like Clockwork Orange goon outfits
* sleeves are too long - would stick out under everything
* yellow things on the shoulders (part of the cape? the shoulders of the suit?) make his shoulders look much smaller! Ditch 'em...

Would work better (as-is) for X-men & the like. Ditch the high collar so we can see his great neck and redo the midsection seams so they go... elsewhere... and that'd be interesting.

A beautiful drawing. Truly elegant, in the mathematical sense of less is more.

Love the cuff detail. Are the square cuff links on purpose, to make people think "square" when they see Metropolis Clark? If so, bonus.

Small suggestions to make the face more closely resemble Tom's:
* bridge of the nose: Tom has a very WASPy, turned-up nose, very narrow along the septum, not at all strong and Dick Tracy-like as is "classic" Superman's. Need just a hint of a line just at/below the bridge, or more of an angle *at* the bridge, to indicate this.
* cheek dents: Tom has a more angular jaw and cheeks than these.

As art, though, it's wonderful. :yay:

Welling has an extremely broad chest, so there's a ton of real estate there... you should always try to take advantage.

Hm. I think the \S/ is just fine. I would have v'd out the lats a little more though, and perhaps added some more meat. I know folks will think it's sacrilege to say he looks "too" lean, but I'm really enjoying the bulk Welling has now. There's a lot of mass hanging off those bones of his, and... well... bigger is better, doncha know? LOL
