This thread is by popular request! :)
Symbolism in SV is ubiquitous. Religious and spiritual metaphors often share the same stage with general references to the Superman mythos. Here are a few images to start us off. These don't require any explanation...

Actually, that's one thing the show does very consistantly well: the lighting.
My hubby is a lighting designer so I notice these things...
I think Memoria is proabably one of the better examples of how well the DP lights the show.

There's also the scene in Crusade, right after the Clark and Kal-El struggle. Martha comforts an exhausted but reposed Clark on the cave floor. She holds his head and brushes his hair off his face as the camera dollies back and the scene fades out. I don't have that cap handy, but it's quite nice. :)

Well, as long as we're going all "X-Files"-ish here looking for symbolic imagery and hidden meanings...:D
I've always thought TPTB/SV delighted in the little "inside jokes" and meanings through out the series.
For example (and as pointed out by many others in this thread), there's the whole "messiah" connection thing going on. In the pictures above I think an obvious one pops out. In both pictures the cherub (little angel) is in the presence of those who know "the secret" (Ma, Pete, and of course Clark), and is clearly (to me anyway) acknowledging that fact ("Shhhhh, its a secret").
However, note in the first picture, the camera angle is such that the little angel appears to actually be facing directly at Ma and Pete. He (the angel) is addressing them directly ("Shhhhh").
In the second picture (and in the presence of the "messiah") the camera angle is such that the angel appears to be averting his gaze downward as though he is unworthy to look at Clark directly. But his message is still the same ("Shhhh, its still a secret").
OK there boyz and girlz, if you think that's a stretch, wait until my next post. (See below)
Disclaimer: All discussions of this show comparing Clark to a messiah, Jesus, Christ, etc are just that...discussions; and as such, are not intended to profane, libel, or otherwise denigrate any actual messiahs (living, dead or otherwise), or other religious icons, or likewise any other supernatural beings, in any form or manner, either printed or spoken, and such comments are to be taken as scholarly discussion only. Further, any reproduction or rebroadcast of this telecast, except with the express written permission of Smallville Minor League Baseball is strictly prohibited.
(had to get that out there...after the elections and this weeks events its not easy being a Agnostic of Branch Vader anymore. Might need to get back in the old "broom closet" again! :D)

Now for some real fun...
Please note the painting on the wall through the doorway in the upper right quadrant (good scifi word; quadrant!) of the picture.
Someone with the right software, please zoom in, repixillate, enhance, clarify, etc..etc the picture and tell me thats not good ole' Supes from the waist up, facing right with his cape kinda blowing around him. I've seen several examples of that kind of inside "wink" that I think they (TPTB/SV) stick in the background as "easter eggs" for the fans. Hey, how appropriate is that as today is Easter! (Old Pagan holiday for the record...hey no flames, just fact).

In the teaser to Exodus (before the opening credits), Clark goes to the storm cellar when he hears Jor-El's voice. The ship changes shape, rotates, and does some pretty neat things before becoming a globe. Well, right after it stands on edge, it very clearly becomes the shape of a cross. It's pretty unmistakable, but it quickly changes so as not to make it too overt.

I love this thread. That's one of the things I love about Smallville is looking for hidden things. I found a couple things, not nearly as good as the previous ones. I never even saw the connection in the telephone pole. In Accelerate during the frozen rain Emily's grave has an angel on it and Clark is shown in the same frame with just him and the angel. In Jinx, in the lockeroom. I know everyone has commented on the Red Zone and the shoes, but in the very beginning, there is a ray of light coming down and the way Clark is posed, it looks like he is praying with the ray of light striking him. Its quite nice.

Did you notice Holly Harold was one of the names of people called to get their diplomas in Commencement...
They do that stuff all the time and I think it's great.I remember the name, but it didn't click with me initially. Nice catch.
Here's something I brought up over at BTs recently...
http://www.patcostello.com/temp/hourglass.jpg
No, there isn't any angel or devil imagery in that capture from Hourglass (Cassandra's vision of President Luthor), but the wind was blowing in the did-you-catch-that direction, so I figured I'd post it. Notice the stars in the presidential seal. There's 52 of 'em. ;)
That scene was shot on the West Wing set. So the real question is, is the seal like that on West Wing too, or were the SV prop people having too much fun that day? :D

Here's another possible religious reference: Anyone notice how they switched from the flames of the rocket propelling to Clark laid out in the FOS? I believe that when Jesus died, he descended into Hell to get the keys of life and death before resurrecting. Just a thought.

This little thread caught my eye, especially since last night...
I go to a GREAT Bible study on Mondays (by Beth Moore) and we are studying the book of Daniel. Last night she mentioned that the name Dani-EL means "God is my judge" and that in Hebrew, "EL" means God (that can be THE GOD or other gods). Very interesting...
I looked it up...
El
Main article: El (god) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_%28god%29)
The word El (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_%28god%29) appears in other northwest Semitic languages (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semitic_languages) such as Phoenician (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenician_language) and Aramaic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aramaic_language). In Akkadian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akkadian_language), ilu is the ordinary word for god. It is also found also in Old South Arabian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_South_Arabian) and in Ethiopic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ge%27ez_language), and, as in Hebrew, it is often used as an element in proper names. In northwest Semitic texts it often appears to be used of one single god, perhaps the head of the pantheon, sometimes specifically said to be the creator.
El (Hebrew: אל) is used in both the singular and plural, both for other gods and for the God of Israel. As a name of God, however, it is used chiefly in poetry and prophetic discourse, rarely in prose, and then usually with some epithet attached, as "a jealous God." Other examples of its use with some attribute or epithet are: El `Elyon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%60Elyon) ("Most High God"), El Shaddai ("God Almighty"), El `Olam ("Everlasting God"), El Hai ("Living God"), El Ro'i ("God of Seeing"), El Elohe Israel ("God, the God of Israel"), El Gibbor ("God of Strength"). In addition, names such as Gabriel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriel) ("Strength of God"), Michael (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael)Raphael (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raphael) ("God's medicine") and Daniel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel) ("God is My Judge") use God's name in a similar fashion. ("He Who is Like God"),

I think he fasted and prayed for 40 days, then at the end the devil tempted him.You guys are funny... and are all partially right.
After being baptized, Jesus went into the "wilderness" and fasted and prayed for 40 days. (Godly men, like Moses and Elijah were often alone with God for a long time... where they learned more about HIM... where they learned his will and got focused. Often this was done before embarking on an important work for God. Jesus did it before starting his ministry.)
In his physically weakened condition the devil then came and "tempted" him... He challenged Jesus to use his "power" to prove himself... but that would have been going against his purpose on earth.
The first temptation was with food because he was very hungry, and he had the power to make the stones into bread... Then the devil took him to the pinnacle of the temple and challanged him to prove himself by jumping... Then the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. He told him that he would give ALL this to Jesus if he would worship him... This is where the devil reveals his ultimate purpose... to inspire disobedience, to separate us from God and to be like God.
Jesus answered the devil each time with scripture - "it is written..." (No wonder the Bible refers to the WORD of God as a "sword.")
