Wow...This look's amazing. When I read about it it sounded kinda weird but...wow. This look's awesome. I can't wait.

BTW, I hate all the people bi***ing about the trailer not really giving away the plotline. This is a great trailer, it doesn't really show you the whole story but it does enough to make you interested.

It's visually interesting. I'll give it that. Can't really tell much else about it. The Rock and Sean William Scott had good on screen chemistry in The Rundown, so I'm sure that'll translate to this. Hopefully the movie has been improved since it was trashed at Cannes.

I think it's good that it doesn't reveal a lot about the plot. How many trailers have we seen give away the whole story? Italian Job, I'm looking at you.

And I loved the trailer. It reminded me a lot of Across the Universe but without the annoying british actors. The last 45 seconds were great IMO

Ya but the high execs thought it was way to long (it is originally over 3 hours I believe) and werent that happy with the movie overall so they had whats his name go back and recut the entire movie.

All I know is when the dvd comes out, I am totally waiting for the Directors Cut since it should be worth the wait due to the film being cut down and edited so much.

I've read many articles...this being one about people who loved it....also talks about how Donnie Darko was a completely different film at Sundance...look how that turned out
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/34146

Harry has seen how the world ends according to Richard Kelly's finished version of SOUTHLAND TALES at Fantastic Fest

I’ve been wanting to see the second film by Richard Kelly for far too long now. And tonight at Fantastic Fest – with the first of the AICN SECRET SCREENINGS we had the World Premiere of Richard’s sophomore film in its final form.

Richard has a habit of transforming premieres. DONNIE DARKO debuted to oddly lackluster reviews at Sundance – only for a different finished film to be welcomed with open arms worldwide as a cult hit.

With SOUTHLAND TALES, the unfinished film played at Cannes to disastrous reviews and now… a year and a half later – the finished version of SOUTHLAND TALES played to a beyond capacity, added folding seats screening at FANTASTIC FEST.

The film is a Science Fiction Religious Film Noir Satire of a post-9/11 future that we pray never comes to be. It is an imaginable alternate future where the energy crisis is solved by a gigantic odd Octopussy-esque looking machine that transmits energy directly to the objects needing it. However, this strange device has also created a strange rift in the space-time continuum. Which also is possibly responsible for the birthing the second coming of Christ signaling the end of days for mankind. Basically.

The film is a lot to consume on an initial viewing, but imagine it like this. Richard Kelly has set out to create a film of the same ilk as CANDY or SLAUGHTERHOUSE 5 or the original CASINO ROYALE. These have always been controversial films for a very niche crowd. Films so packed with detail and nuance that to the average viewer it becomes simply a mess, but upon further inspection, you can find a method to the madness.

The first question that I had for Richard Kelly after the screening involved the insane casting of this film which was some of the most daunting against type-casting that I’ve ever seen in a film.

You start with Duane Johnson channeling Ralph Meeker re-envisioned as a lantern jawed tattooed Hollywood Superstar come political tool for the right, that through amnesia ends up as a pawn of the liberal Marxist movement of Venice Beach through whom they hope to embarrass the Republican Presidential Candidate, whose daughter he is married to, by his affair with a porn star Oprah and his ties to a racist cop double homicide. Duane is perfection in this role. His panic mode is hysterical – but he seems to be operating on about half cylinders – which is explained later in the film.

Next you have Seann William Scott aka Stifler – who is playing twins, one of which is a cop – the other is the twin that is in cahoots with the Marxist movement to mess with the Republican election. His characters are again – slightly off. At no point in the film does he do that goofy stupid grin that he’s famous four. However, Kelly does use the actor’s natural confusion to enhance his doubt about what he’s doing. He has a dark history, having injured his best friend in Iraq…

Who, btw is played by Justine Timberlake, who had his film career ruined by a terrible mis-thrown grenade by his best friend. He’s our narrator for the film, as well as being placed on a high powered gun tower mounted atop a restaurant along Venice Beach.

Now the Porn Star, Krista Now is played by Sarah Michelle Gellar – who has all the best lines in the movie. You see, Krista Now is a prophetic porn blonde Barbie version of Oprah. She and Duane Johnson’s character have written a script titled THE POWER – which is about how the world ends… and as the film plays out – what they’ve written is coming to pass.

That’s the main characters – but throughout you have others like Bai Ling, Nora Dunn, John Larroquette, the amazing Wallace Shawn and his mother played by Beth Grant (SparkleMotion’s Coach). Then there’s Jon Lovitz as a racist homicidal cop, Kevin Smith buried in make-up, the brilliant Miranda Richardson, Donnie Darko’s dad as the would-be President (Holmes Osborne) – and there’s Mandy Moore and Cheri Oteri and even Eli Roth taking a ****.

And absolutely no way could I not mention the brilliantly creepy Zelda Rubinstein – in full on creepy scary mode.

The film’s design and conception is so tightly packed with a billion details that there are moments and sequences where you’re left wondering – “WHAT THE **** DOES THIS MEAN?” – but then the film is about the world coming to pieces – and when the world ends, does anyone really know that that is what is happening. The ending is particularly cryptic and bizarre – but left me not so much scratching my head in confusion – as much as thinking… damn, I’m going to have to watch this a few more times.

If you want a simple tale, look elsewhere. This is the type of end of the world conspiracy that you’d expect to come out of Terry Southern or Hunter S Thompson or Kurt Vonnegut. It concerns alternate realities, subversive sub-cultures, neo-politic-paranoia and religious doomsday soothsaying.

You may not get what it all means, but it is about asking what it means and laughing at the absurdist fever dream that you just watched. It’s a Basquiat at 24 frames a second – if that makes any sense to you – then perhaps this film is for you.

I never did see Donnie Darko - I've just never been in th mood to watch it, but I may sometime in the next six weeks. Southland Tales is looking good. It's kind of strange to see so many SNL cast members, and all the none cast members hosted the better episodes in recent memory. Very strange.

This looks like a film based on a trail to maybe could challenge the Rock as an actor a little bit. The other casting is meh but his part looks interesting at least. It looked like The Rock and Mandy Moore had more chemistry though based on what i saw form the trailer.

Who wants to see Stone Cold and The Rock do a movie together next. A buddy Cop movie would so work there.

There has been a bunch that I don't like 'cause I don't get them 'cause they were made to confuse you for some artistic reason. I hope this is like STAY with Ryan Gosling. I don't think it ever was on my cinema but the DVD is out at the end of the month so i am gonna pick it up, is it much of an action movie MC ?

What happened in the last 40 minutes to up the ante ? :woot:

I wouldn't really call it an action movie, but it has its moments.

I was laughing all the way through, and there's this one 40 secondish take where I was like, "If this scene ends how I think it's going to end, this is the best movie ever." And sure enough... it did. :shock

As for the last 40 minutes, ooOOOomph, I don't wanna rob you of the fresh experience but I'll just say s**t hits the fan as stuff is revealed when they board the Mega Zeppelin.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is hot btw.

"You know what? I like to get f**ked. I like to get f**ked hard. But hey, you have to draw the line somewhere. I mean, violence is a big problem in our society today and I will not support it. That is the primary reason why I won't do anal."

:applaud

And the ending was one of the coolest I've seen.

This movie was absolute garbage, trash, crap, feces, etc...rolled up into one flashy package. Where to begin? The story/plot was absolutely the most stupid plot I have ever read and watched. A madman discovered the 4th dimension and when people go through it they split into two distinct persons with an identical souls. Joining those two on Earth will bring about the Apocalypse. How stupid right? The corniest moment was when the two Sean William Scott's joined heavenly hands and made the ice cream truck float while Kip Dynamite was on top with a rocket launcher. The Rock over acted once again. The only characters that I cared for were Sean William Scott, Sarah Michelle, and Deepthroat 2. I loved the minor cast like Cheri Oteri, John Lovitz, Amy Poehler, etc... This movie had twists but instead of making them coherent, they were just pulled out of someone's @ss. This reminds me of the episode of South Park where the manatees get ideas for Family Guy jokes by picking out idea balls and cramming them together. There was absolutely no action, the jokes were over the top, and the CGI of the Zeppelin blowing up was film student attrocious. Justin Timberlake was alright but of course his character did absolutely nothing and had about 2 lines of background.

God this movie was one of the worst things I have ever seen. It makes me wonder why all these stars would submit to this trash. Bai Ling, Mandy Moore, and other washed up actors also made apperances and of course over acted...even the lady from Poltergeist made an appearance!

3/10

Well, theres no real focus point thus theres no solid meaning

The poke fun at "big brother" and government stuff but it seems just for fun.

They make some intriguing conclusions about space and time, but they were poorly explained and it seemed like Kelly got ahead of himself and started tieing up loose ends too quickly.

The JT-SWS the friendly fire nonsenseconnection was really interesting and they decided just to mention it rather than focus on that which i think they should have.

The large cast was a problem especially since the psychology of the characters was very important but couldnt get focused on since their was so many people.

I wanted so badly to like this film. I went into it with an open mind, and came out terribly disappointed. It's a shame too, because there are some really original ideas hidden in this train wreck of a film.

For one thing, I did get a kick out of the Rock in this. I wish he'd pick more roles of this nature instead of The Gameplan's and whatnot of his career. Kevin Smith's small role was a treat as well.

All logic says you can't fault a movie that involves both The Pixies and Will Sasso, but unfortunately, this film defies all logic. Dear god does it elude logic.

I think the best bit was the Timberlake lip-sync part, and that had nothing to do with the film.

Still, even after this, I'm anxious to see Kelly's next film, The Box. Richard Matheson + Richard Kelly has to equal genius right? RIGHT?:csad:

Okay, so I just saw the movie for the first time. Here are my thoughts...

W
T
F
was that crap?

Oh, don't get me wrong. I "got" the story, more or less. And really, it's a decent sci-fi movie concept. I just didn't like how it all played out. There was a point where the movie pointlessly turned into a music video, and destroyed the movie's already pathetic excuse for a pace. The glut of comedic actors (Jon Lovitz was taking things too far) and hilarious scenes (yes, I laughed at the cars having sex too) clouded an overall serious plot. Much of the acting was over the top (that little old lady from The Poltergeist needs to turn it down for once), and Dwayne Johnson's acting was inconsistent throughout the entire movie. It was a movie with a lot of information to cram in, and the director couldn't find a consistent way to tell it all. It was all over the place.

I will compliment the writer/director for crafting one hell of a conspiracy. Practically everyone was in on it, or a part of it even if they didn't know it. And they weren't a bunch of left-field reveals. Each "who's really in on Baron's plan" reveal was hinted at during an earlier point in the movie.

For a majority of the film, it was neither here nor there. The negative points weren't completely ruining the movie. That is, until the final few minutes. I was expecting something crazy to happen when the two officers touched hands, but I sure as hell wasn't expecting the ice cream truck they were in to float in the air, and abruptly stop in front of the megazeppelin. The resulting explosion from the missile hitting the blimp was just... cartoony.

its actually an interpretation of the Book of Revelations from the Bible for those wondering whats going on. On the Southland Tale IMDb page under FAQ explains a lot of it. Going back and watching it with that information makes it more enjoyable for me, kinda like when I read the pages of that Time travel book from Donnie Darko and then watching it again.

I couldn't get into this film either. The story was all over the place.

so we rented it last saturday, because my wife's sister was coming over and she's a Donnie Darko fan like both of us

so we popped in and watched it

our overall reaction was "what the hell are we watching?" followed by "did that just happen?" (I can't remember another movie with more WTF moments), ending with "I dunno what I just watched, but I love it"

so we watched it again on sunday

and believe me, this thing unravels the second time you watch it

last monday, I was home alone for a couple of hours and watched the first part, and again, with every time you see it, you start noticing a lot of things that are there, making the whole movie even better

and nope, I didn't like the ending, it's frustrating, but then again, it's a movie about the end of the world, and I suppose that living through that should also be frustrating, kinda like dying in your bedroom after you've saved the world, in order to save the world

so yes, it is a frustratingly hard to swallow movie, but the payoff is great

and the message it has, absolutely beautiful

Dude I watched the first half of this a few months ago tripping on some AWESOME Misfit skull print blotter and WOW. The delayed reflection in the mirror scene flipped my boy who was on more hits than me out. It was great he was like "Dude wtf is wrong with that dude!!" Awesome movie though its so unfairly misunderstood and its very obvious it just goes right over peoples heads alot like Donnie Darko did. I understood Donnie Darko like the 2nd time through but it took me like 3 times with this. I didnt hafta read the little time travel book either. (I just looked it up on wikipedia and it explains it all" Richard Kelly is definately a beautiful film maker. His films just have this over mystique and enigmatic quality to me almost just because of how "out there" the concepts are but they always are beautiful. And remember Pimps do not commit suicide

This is possibly my new favorite movie...of all time. I love it.

One thing:
Why didn't Roland Taverners past/future (whichever it was) self get killed and Boxer Santeros' did? They never explain that! Or maybe I missed it?
