I understand that, but you can oder from the U.S and even take advantage of the week dollar. I'm sure you would end up paying the same amount (or maybe less) you would locally even after shipping. That is if you live in Europe. The Euro and British Pound are much higher than the dollar. ;)

I wasn't even expecting that, because releasing other designs could generate controversy about which should one have made into the movie. I knew they wouldn't give it all away. It seems they are showing only the variations of the used suit.

What type of art is in the book? any character conceptual artwork or is it more locations...etc? I am curious to see the different concepts for the bat-suit, batmobile and scarecrow.

how many pages?

The art of Spider-Man book that was released a few years back is great, if it's anything like that I'll be excited.

PJ, I wouldn't fret over it. Amazon can be screwy with their shipping estimates. One of the last orders I placed with them had a really extended estimate for shipping and arrival dates, so much so, that I received my items and it still said "waiting to be shipped." A bit bizarre.

BTW, for any of you who chose the "free shipping" method (as did I), it's never that long a wait (5-9 days). More like 3-4 at the most, least from my experience.

I just perused a copy at Books a Million. Very Cool. Lots of concept and storyboard art. Not too many pics, but a couple of cool ones we haven't yet seen: Bruce in suit, utility belt and harness on rooftop, Ducard and ninjas near microwave transmitter, Bruce in the greenhouse, and my favorite: Bale on set in batsuit looking through lens of camera.

One of the most interesting things is a storyboard piece that goes against what we know (those of us that read the first draft script) of Batman's first meeting with Falcone. Don't know how to do the fancy spoiler stuff, so here goes:

Falcone is cowering in the back seat of a limo, armed with shotgun. Hears a thumping noise, Batman is on the roof and breaks moon-roof glass with fists and pulls him up through the opening. Falcone asks who he is, he draws him closer and says: I'm Batman. The homeless guy looks on, Batman says the "nice coat" line and shoots up into the night. Looks like Nolan may have cut and borrowed from the original 'judge scene' - makes you wonder how he handled the first appearance of Batman in the film.

After browsing through the book, it's definitely worth having. I'd shy away from the scanning and such. Not to come off sounding noble - but it looks like they put a lot of care into this production - all the way around. Let's support their efforts. If you can't quite afford the $40 (I can't), scrounge up the cash for Amazon.

What I'm really curious about... are there early design sketches of the Tumbler? I'm really interested in seeing the evolution of that design -- from the original concepts to the final product.

For something like this film, an artist/production designer might've gone through dozens -- if not hundreds -- of variations before arriving at the final approved version.

I really don't like that AT ALL. One, b/c the original appearance was so f-ing awesome. I don't know why they wouldn't keep it. Two, the "nice coat" line absoutely sucks and is abhorrrent. And the "I'm Batman" is a rip from Burton's and is going to remind people directly of that. Why can't other people name him -- it makes so much more sense. Not happy at all of this is the final product of the scene. Really disappointing. My first disappointment with the movie so far...

Somebody posting a couple of scans is no different from people going into the store and flipping through the book. They won't be getting any money out of me till I see what I'm buying; either I go to the store and look, or somebody posts scans. The latter is just more convenient.

Moreover, I'm incredibly amused by this sudden anti-scan movement. Nobody was complaining when the forumers here were screwing magazine after magazine out of their exclusive articles, interviews, and pictures.

If it was just early storyboards, it means nothing. If it is actual shots of the scene, then it's a problem. I can't believe Nolan wouldn't film the Judge scene. We have seen he gets the pictures and gives them to Rachel, that was in the Smallville clip.

Posting scans is nothing, it's the same thing as when you go into the bookstore and find the book....you flip through it and see if you want to make a purchase. You want to see what the goods entail so you know whether its worth buying or not. On the cover art alone I am gonna buy this book, I just located a copy downtown and I am on my way out to get it.

lujho,

What are you talking about? The suit is exactly like it is in the drawing. The bat on the chest iand the abs are the only different things. Having abs like that would look fake with Bale, and I think the bat on the chest looks awesome on the suit in the movie.

The cape is long in the movie, but think about it. If the cape were as long as shown in teh drawing, he would trip over it, get it caught in things, and he would look like a fool.

The Current suit rocks. I hope you can eventually grow to like it. And I think you will on June 15.

What hes talking about that every art and drawing of the BB suit looks better then the actual suit itself. Just look at the BB toy boxes, the drawing of Batman on those toy boxes look 10x better then the real life pictures. I'd hate to break it to you, but the real life Batman pics look goofy.

Those designs are awesome. It's amazing that the movie suit, while very close, is simply nowhere near as cool looking.

Okay, so it's still a sculpted rubber suit, but these sculpted rubber suits are way cooler. a simple change of colour scheme, cape style and less bulky cowl all add up and make a huge difference. I like the slightly more organic look of the armour (still very believable as armour) and the bigger, upswept mouth holes.

What made them decide that the final suit looks better than these?

I didn't want to start the suit thing again and see the suit fanboys whine, but I also noticed that, as soon as I saw that cover. That's why I asked if it was a drawing. The reason it looks better than the real suit is because the muscles are not so sculpted and robotic looking, and his head is not so big. The head on the real suit is really big. So I agree. The drawings do look better.

I've spent a year on SHH benefiting from all the pics and manips that others have posted and I'm honored to be able to give something back to the group, even if it is only something as simple as a few scans from a book… many others have gone to a greater effort than I (though I will admit, it’s good to be a made man ;) for a while I thought I was gonna end up wrapped in a plastic tarp!)

Having skimmed through the book I find that some of my reservations have intensified, having seen possible alternatives, even if those differences were but subtle ones, while others reservations have been put to rest. But the time for those arguments is past, time now to enjoy the film—in its own right—and not for what any of us think it should be…

… and then look forward to news of the sequel so that we can start this nonsense all over again :D

I agree with almost everything you said. The designs in the book make the suit much more sleeker, more form fitting. But at what cost? My guess is mobility. To have something sculpted in the way the batsuit is, and almost skin tight..that'd cause problems in movement I think.

As for the mouth hole, I think it was said that Bale's chin is simply too pointy for the cowl. Also, one could say that a big opening like that would reveal too much of his face making it easier to identify the man behind the mask. One change I'd like to the cowl however is to make that more form fitting to the head. Unlike the suit, it doesn't need much mobility except for the neck. In too many pics we've seen a bulbous head, not very appealing. Oh, and a more stylized mouth hole would be nice too, not quite sharp enough on the ends imo. :o

The final product NEVER looks exactly like the designs.
I would assume that alot of these are the exact designs that the final suit was based on. Some of them were earlier ones, but for the most part, they seem to be the design.

Things change inbetween paper and reality though, like the lenses.
From what we have heard the lenses were intended to be used, but were ditched, as such htey would have likely been part of the final design, or maybe were just drawn that way as a choice of the artist, seeing as how that is how Batman's eyes are normally drawn.

As for the rest, the only think that really is different is the cape attatchment. The specifics of the shape of the bat and what not are really inconsiquential in comparing the final designs to the actual suit. Obviously it is ment to be the same idea/design.

Also look at the art and designs for Spiderman. Not one of the designs matches exactly with the final suits.
Infact the suit was made based on designs and then altered after it was made based on costume tests (that's what they are for) most notable probably the eye shape design.
Even the final goblin design was different, it had yellow/ gold pieces encorporated into it and actually looked a hell of alot better then what they used, but apparently that was changed for effects purposes, as the other design was too complicated for the CGI.

Point is what we see in the actual suit is simply how those designs translated into the actual product.

Exactly. That's the only reason I can see for the small mouth hole and also the reason the ears point inwards. I don't lake this design, because it makes his forehead look too big. It just add for the bulky feeling of the cowl many talk about. But oh well, the film is here.

I saw a pic in a magazine the other day that had Alfred standing with a baseball bat over his shoulder looking down at the interior of the cowl (the armored part as shown in the pictures on this thread). I'm guessing at some point they crack the cowl with a bat to test out it's durability.

I thought the exposed area for his mouth was a little too small and round.

Yeah a LONG time ago....the picture sorta jogged my memory.

Supposedly those are going to be the comedic parts of the movie.

Yeah when they're putting the suit together it's pretty comedic. I liked it, though.

Batscot, I'm sure you would've given this one a perfect ten.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/Anthropod/Art%20of/scan0006B.jpgTrust me, I studied this one for some time but in my opinion this is a black suit with tonal variations that lend the suit a "gray" appearance in the same way that certain lighting conditions give the actual suit a "grayness" and at times a "darker" logo. Ultimately, there is no more compelling reason to believe this concept art is any more black and gray than the actual film Batsuit given that we accept the “gray appearance” of the latter as being nothing more that the result of strong lighting on matte black.

But I would gladly conceded defeat on this point… because if this piece of concept art is truly Black&Gray then it shows unequivocally that a more traditional approach was in fact a viable concept, perhaps even a better* one (given the reception these scans have received), and that whatever the reasons for rejecting the traditional approach, the notion that somehow Black&Gray would look bad is not one of them.

A perfect ten? Hmm… well, there are still no trunks :D maybe a nine (I actually give the film suit an eight in some poll way back when—I don’t know where people got this notion that I disliked the Begins suit, I just thought it could be better). But seriously, if this was the way we saw the film Batsuit the majority of the time I would have accepted the concept without complaint.

And in many ways I would have been fine with this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/Anthropod/Art%20of/scan0003.jpg

… if only the logo were more distinct (e.g., “flocked”(?)), and I unapologetically hold that the suit looks better without the clasps!

* Having said that, I sure some will begin to backtrack/denounce the “concept” pics ;)

It's a book about the ART that was created for the movie, not the movie itself. It won't have many stills from the movie at all.

The "official guide" book would have more film stills.

Jesus, I must buy this book. Hopefully, they'll still be around on the 14th when I pick up the novelization at Barnes and Noble. If it wasn't such a truck, I'd go now, but unfortunately with the prices of gas plus the book, I can't afford it right now.

Thanks for some of those scans....they look stunning. I thought the book was just going to be pictures and such, but it's good to read that there is HIGHLY descriptive text throughout the book.

Just got mine from Amazon. It's simply breathtaking.

Batscot posted pretty much all of the suit stuff, but I find the designs and artwork for Gotham and the locations to be even more amazing. I can attempt some digital photos for you guys if you want, but it won't be as good as scans...

One I particularly like is this stunning two-page piece of artwork. It's Bruce overlooking Gotham from the massive windows of Wayne Tower. At dusk, with the now familiar orange tint, sun going down. Lots of insight from Nolan and Crowley.

Well I placed the order on Monday and it shipped early Tuesday morning. Their shipping estimate (don't ever put much stock in those) has it coming on June 7! I also used the Free shipping method, which is supposed to take 5-9 days.

That said, the package shipped from Jersey and I'm in NYC, so I think that'd certainly account for the speedy delivery.

Sure, there's two costume sketches. Basically one of murphy in his suit and one with the mask next to him. There's also a big sketch of the Scarecrow in action as part of the title page to a chapter.

Hemming said they tried some 20 different looks for the Scarecrow, everything from a leathery gas mask to a skull, but they felt it kept looking like something out of a cheap horror flick. They wanted something more primal, as the burlap sack looks like "something a mentally disturbed person might have fashioned in a manic burst of inspiration..."
