A necessity. Ya know we love 'em, 'specially since many o' us weren't around fer some o' comics' best days. But, my question to you is when ya go backissue shoppin', what do you look fer? Specific titles? Cheap prices? Any old comic yer missin'? Give us an insight to how yer mind works.

As I currently have everything that I want, the only thing that I need as a back issue is Amazing Fantasy #15.

It's funny, but I rarely ever buy back issues. I don't seem to enjoy comics as much as when they're coming out.

I'd love to get my hands on an entire Man-Thing run (from the original series), as well as an entire Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth (59 issues) run.

But it's not something that I look for.

Usually the only back issues I'm interested in are issues that give me insight into specific characters. But I plan on tracking down everything I'm missing from the Thunderstrike, Deadpool, and New Warriors series... someday.

There is this weird comic store downtown, they only sell back issues. The guy just has bins and bins and bins of comics starting at 3 for a dollar moving up to a max of five dollars. The comics are in great condition (not mint but they arent faded ripped or dogeared or anything). Every couple of months i go there and drop fifty bucks on a million comics. so far i have gotten an almost complete run of x factor, all the punisher titles, the west coast avengers, both vision and scarlet witch series, ghost rider, moon knight, cloak and dagger you name it. the comics are so cheap that i buy anything i have even a passing interest in, and i buy as many as i can.

I recently started buying back issues of Moonknight and I'll be hunting for ones of Cloak and Dagger, Batman and Spider-Woman soon, and any issues of Spidey that I do not have in my collection to fill in the spaces. :)

In the late 80's, I sold my original collection, which I would later regret. (The dreams were the worst. I would dream of finding a great collection of comics for a great price; then, I'd wake up and realize it was just a dream.) After starting collecting again, I would never sell, unless I got tired of something. (Like I have a complete collection of Image for about 4-5 years that I wouldn't cry over if I got rid of.) Now, I am buying stuff that I remember from my previous collection. (Like, I just got on ebay the complete collection of SpiderWoman for $50.00 and the complete collection of Marvel Fanfare for $20.50.) Now, if I could just get back my original collection of Star Wars!

I usually buy back issues to fill in holes in a series. The last few years I've been working on the Avengers. I now have issues #34-current and 11 of the first 33.

I buy for a lot of reasons. My main goal in my comicbookcollecting life is to own everything X-Men and X-Men related. So right now my goal in that is to get every issue of all the ongoings. I know that sounds like a big goal but I'm actually doing quite well. I have almost everything that's come out since the early 90's save the last few issues and the first few issues of Wolverine's stuff (I got so mad about the relaunch that I just didn't buy anything, so I'm missing about 10 issues there). So I have the full runs of X-Force and X-Men and everything that's come out since. I also have all of X-Factor save about 15 or so,.. and about half of the New Mutants. And I have Uncanny from 122 up (and I also have 118 and 119). Plus I have 3/4 of the minis that ever came out (Wolverine stuff is what I'm mostly missing). So I have a great jump on that, and I'm only 23 so I have plenty of time to get the rest.

Other than X-Men I go to collect things I'm missing gaps in like New Warriors (only 10 or so left to get), Spiderman stuff, and just any other stories that sound good.

Heh don't worry, Jewish, my goal's a lot loftier: to own every Marvel. Ever.

Basically, I buy on a budget. So, my first priority is always what deal I c'n get on what issue an' from where. Nothin' like a li'l comparison shoppin'. Now, certain times I try to keep my eye open fer key issues, but I'll generally just pick a series an' buy as many issues I'm missin' from there an' move on to th' next until I reach my goal. An', if it ever truly came down to it, a decidin' factor in what I would get or not would be how cool a cover looks. Condition plays no factor fer me, although I do try to get a good deal on th' higher grades as much as possible. May as well get th' most outta yer buck, right?

Wow,.. that's awsome man! I'd like to hear what all you own sometime and how many comics you have overall. I have right around 4,000 or so if I had to guess, Mostly X-Men stuff and Spidey stuff with some other randomness thrown in there.

Add on to the question: Are you satisfied just getting to read the stories, as in an Essential volume, or do you have to own the actual copy? Also, do you buy to sell at a future date, or will you hold onto them until you die?

I'm perfectly satisfied just reading the stories any way I can. I bought the 40 Years of the Amazing Spider-Man CD set and I'll be just as content reading those as I would the actual comics. Well, not just as content because I prefer solid things I can hold to reading comics on my computer, but still, it'll do.

Me too. I practically fell over when I saw the 40 years of Spidey on the Best Buy shelves. I hadn't heard about that before, and I examined the box thinking, "OK, what's the catch? Is is just covers???" Can't wait for Fantastic Four. I've been dying to relive an old issue I had as a young kid where Reed was stuck in the Negative Zone and there was a fake Reed getting it on with Sue.

As a fan and as a collector, I love to get something that becomes valuable, like when Origin and Ultimate Spiderman went so high in price. But, I still hate...ABSOLUTELY HATE...that they have variant issues, especially in such abundance lately. As someone said on here, "Is this the 90's again?" I'm glad Marvel stopped doing all the reprinting, but when I buy an issue, I want the same damn issue everyone else has. I don't want some comic dealer to get one issue, save it, give it to his friend, or auction is off (this is what a 90's comic dealer did in my home town back in the day) to the highest bidder. I don't want to open up Wizard, look at the top 10 most wanted books, and see 5 issues I bought, but none are really the book I bought. They are all variant issues.

Phaed

JewishHobbit
06-05-2005, 03:21 PM
I agree with that, it annoys me. And I have to have the actual copies of the comic. I don't like getting TPBs or anything like that, I want the original first prints.

WOLVERINE25TH

Here's another criteria I forgot: th' hauntin'. What is th' hauntin', you ask? Simple...it's when you constantly see an image from a comic over an' over, an' then when ya see it in th' back issue box ya just gotta get it. One example would be Uncanny X-Men #213 & 222 whose images were on a calendar from th' 90s. Both issues I got off Ebay soon as I saw 'em.

I'd love to get more backissues but I just can't afford it at the moment (other than an occational and random binge if money permits). Right now I just want to complete some of the series that I collect, like Daredevil vol 2 and USM.

To get good deals at cons on back issues you need to do it on Sunday Mornings (or whatever the last day is). That's when retailers are wanting to sell as much stock off as they can, and often you can haggle them down some because they want to sell as much as they can so they don't have to pack it home. Also if you buy a large quantity from one dealer they'll often cut you a deal.

Mile High's sales are great too. Whenever they have the 85% off sales on Marvel back issues, I always snap some up.

I don't think that's much to base an opinion on and certainly don't think it's enough to base giving advice on.

I've been to probably 3 dozen cons in the last ten years or so and I've always had good luck finding stuff there. My main advice is to not be afraid to try and haggle. They're there to sell, and are likely to make deals.

Damn, I've been collecting since I was 7, I'm 27 now.....Let's just say my friends who own comic book stores are always asking me when I'm going to sell my collection (NEVER) I pretty much have complete runs - had to sell parts of my collection every couple of years since I always run out of space, but I'm always lucky when I'm buying other people's collections (people who have to get rid of theirs) More often than not, when I start looking through the boxes, I'll get some early issues of Uncanny X-Men or Amazing Spiderman......Collecting is addicting but I wouldn't have it any other way

Isn't it cool when you don't even realize what you have? Few months ago I was on a comic buying binge to the point I had over 300 backissues laying around. With a lack of time to read I've only just been working my way through them all Well, today, I read two issues of Spectacular Spidey I got and boy, was I surprised; I had two parts of the Death of Jean DeWolfe! Holy crap! Not only that, but one part featured an image of Betty being "blown away" by Sin Eater I've seen countless times. I love it when I get a comic that has some kind of image I've seen constantly. Just makes me feel like life can be complete.

The other day I was going to buy this old Daredevil comic I had when I was 11 but, it had stains on the back so I didn't get it. I'm currently getting some Wolverine back issues to finish a story line I started in 2000, #'s 108 and 109 are what I need next.

I tried finding a 100 but couldn't and still can't find it. So I got 101 and so on, it's the story line of when Wolverine's mutation went outta' control after he lost his adimantium and he got more of a beast type look, at first he couldn't talk, then Elektra helped him retrain.

I'd still like to get that 100. I still need #145 aswell.

One time I was at my comic shop and I went to take the comic out of the bag and the manager asked if I wanted him to do it, I was like oh no I've got it, and sure enough the tape stuck to the comic on the way out, something that never happens to me. I got it off though, the manager was sweatin there for a minute so was I 'cause I didn't want to pay for something I wansn't sure I wanted yet.

But, it was okay. The new manager there always opens it himself, I don't blame him.

I hate when I'm getting back issues, and you're missing only a few of a particular run...then, up on ebay a full run pops up, and it's going for a steal, but you only need particular issues. That's what happened just last week with Ka-Zar vol. 2. I've been getting various issues, and I see a full run, issues 1-34, not being bid on. So, shipping is 12.00....it's going for 1 penny. Ended up getting it,anyway. For 12.01 total. Now, I have a bunch of extra copies of Ka-Zar.

Which of the New Mutants are you missing? We might be able to work out a trade,...or a deal.:)

Tell me about it. He was barkin' out orders when I was organizin' my purchases. He'd be a REAL fun boss to have. My next comic show, other than Philly, is gonna be determined by my cash flow an' how many o' what I bought I'm able to get through by then.

november BAC last year, he was dressed up like the joker, and acting very much like him. (I think he has an unfortunate history with drugs or something akin to that...

I don't find myself buying back issues at conventions to often, at least not on the scale of some, who come out with long boxes of stuff. Any comics I buy are gonna be key issues that I can only find at conventions, or things to fill up holes in my collection that my local stores don't have, but even that is maybe 2 dozen seperate comics at most. I don't buy dozens of back issues for reading purposes at cons. In the past, I've bought full runs of several comic series off of ebay - it's cheaper than cons, but I also find I never get around to reading them. so, i don't spend much time looking for back issues at cons

most of my time at cons I spend with creators, which is alot of fun getting sketches, or making friends

I look fer key issues too, but I'll gladly take a crapload o' comics fer a cheap price. Epsecially in th' condition I got most o' these. Worst lookin' one hadda be Marvel Tales #18. Only wish I coulda bought every comic I wanted, but there's always next time. Just happy I got 2 issues I was lookin' fer.

As I currently have everything that I want, the only thing that I need as a back issue is Amazing Fantasy #15.

Last week, I read Spectacular 196-199 which featured Spidey teamin' up against Professor Power with th' original X-Men. All well an' good, first time I ever heard o' that particular villain.

Today, I decide to read some o' my Marvel Tales. #241 just happens to have Spidey an' Beast goin' up against Prof. Power just after he transfers his mind into his son's body. My next issue in my to-read pile, #244, features th' event that triggers th' whole damn mess; Prof Power's son's death.

Heh now how is that fer dumb luck? Seriously, I love it when I randomly buy back issues an' find out I somehow managed to get ones that pertain to others. That's friggin' great!

I'm trying to track down all of Busiek's Avengers stuff. I have a small portion of it (12 issues), but I already know it's the best Avengers stuff of all time. I'm also looking for the compleat Starman series. The tpbs supposedly aren't as good for that series.

Giant-Size X-Men #4 came out last week an' it was basically a host of Thunderbird issues. First two parts I've already read in X-Men Classics an' I began th' first half of th' third. Today, I do my usual weekly readin' an' decide to hit my X-comics. Sure enough, which one ends up in my pile? Th' same comic I already read half of, Uncanny #193. S'happenin' a lot with this batch I've got, I'm tellin' ya.

I'm finding I don't buy back issues as much any more. I generally don't buy comics for their monetary value, just the stories. In the past have bought back issues to read particular story arcs in titles or complete runs I have and the condition hasn't made much difference to me. I guess I have about 5000ish issues now, but lack of space and cost means I rarely buy back issues anymore. I am tending to buy TPBs to read the story arcs I want and am only buying back issues for completest reasons.

I've been going back issue crazy this last month. I've been filling in issues for under a dollar with www.milehighcomics.com (http://www.milehighcomics.com) and at my local comic shop. I just completed my collection of Marvel Comics Presents.

The one thing I hate about Mile High is that last issues are so hard to find on their site, and they usually charge quite a bit for them. You could be paying a dollar a piece for a comic, and when you get to the last two issues, the price triples.

Anyway, I'm just two graphic novels away from having all of the Alien Legion books. Of course, the A Grey Day To Die, which they were selling a Very Fine copy for $33.00, and the other, Binary Deep, which is $3.50. I'll buy Binary Deep with my next order, but the other is waaaay too pricey. (Anyway, I just looked, and someone actually paid that price. Of course, they would have gotten 30% off, but it's still waaay too much.)

Here are books I'm looking to complete my runs of:

Animal Man: 6 issues
Batman & Robin Adventures: 5 issues
Batman & The Outsiders: 1 issue
Blade, The Vampire Hunter: 1 issue
Captain Atom: 4 issues
The Champions: 5 issues
Checkmate(vol. 1): 1 issue
Conan, The Adventurer: 3 issues
Crisis on Infinite Earths: 2 issues

Stern's Avengers were awesome too!

Heck,if you live nearby or are planning to travel, the comic shop I go to in Michigan sells these value packs. When I was last there, they had a big chunk of Busiek's Avengers run starting at #1 for under $20.

The store is called TJ's located in Warren MI.

I've been looking for some of the better Spider-Man backissues lately, like "The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man", "Spider-Man & The Burglar", etc.
