Ya know, these two aren't all that similar at all. Smallville's S shield is clearly its own distinct version.

Yeah, but what I meant all along is, SV's \S/ is loosely based on the SR's one... giving it the same feel. In my opinion, they're similar. Identical? No way, but they look alike.

the reason they look alike is because they have to! theres only so many ways an S can look. would you prefer this:

I'm not even sure it's "based" on the Returns logo. The only trait they share is that both omit the "bubble" on the tail of the S. Jim Lee's Superman Shield pre-dates Superman Returns by a couple of years. He too omits the bubble.
http://www.woofofsteel.com/woof_blog/archives/Jim_Lee_Superman.JPG
What sets Smallville's shield apart is that the 'S' seems to be at an angle inside the diamond. I don't recall another design quite like that one.

i think any consistency between returns and SV's \s/ is due to the fact that they are boht interpretations of the \s/ itself. to say that SV is using SR's shield is just grasping for starws.

i know people here aren't really fond of the movie, but there's no denying the similarities. Instead of people thinking those guys are grasping straws, it seems more like you guys are in denial. ALSO, I've seen recent comics that are drawing their S's that way. There's nothing wrong with it.

The SV shield is just as similar to the Reeve and Cain logos as it is to the SR logo, but they all have enough minor unique characteristics that make each special to themselves. For example, the SV logo has flat sides while the SR logo is rounded. Big deal. They're both still s's and are clearly recognized AS the "Superman shield."

Now correct me if I am wrong if that is not the purpose of this thread then no other Superman \S/ should appear in here am I right? No one here is getting out of line and everyone is being civil to one another. I mean if this is the case then shouldn't the Welling/SV in the comics thread be moved to Super-World as well as this one? I am just saying Pat you can't deny how close the two look to one another.

I don't understand why you're upset. I'm not trying to pick a fight here. We're all on the same team. I was just trying to give my two cents (i am still have teh right to do that right?) No need to get defensive.
This is to everyone overall, I don't see why you can't like both, or neither, and still be a superman fan, it DOESN't have to be a dichotomy...its not like in order to be a devout smallville, you must hate the movie...because that's retarded...each one is their own interpretation of the mythos, because by that same argument, all smallville fans hate the superman comic books and L&C...and neither are 100% close to the original comics, in fact, even within the comic universe they aren't all the same. I like them both a lot, but i don't think either one perfect, by no means. The movie made a lot of mistakes, just like the show.

you dont have a history of posting here. its not that we hate the movie (though i will say that most of us are not particularly fond of it) its that SR-philes constantly come here to tell us how great their movie is compared to our show. then, we have to endure things like "the SV shield is ripping off SR"
it gets annoying. which is why SR is not allowed to be spoken about in here. Unfortunatley the mods havent been enforcing that as of late.
All-star and K-8 have been posting here for a while, and we get it, and we have those debates and move on. their are no hard feelings bc we are accustomed to eachother, even if the harping on the subject gets a little tired.
what we as a group (hopefully i speak for the rest of us, if not, im sorry) do not feel like we have to put up with are people who show up here out of nowhere talking about how great SR is compared to SV and that the only good stuff from SV comes from SR.

Well atleast I'm not I am just saying the two look very much alike and wonder if thats part of the WB deal with the show that everything dealing with Superman has to look close to it. Now if the \S/ looked like Reeve \S/ we wouldn't be having this talk and we would be saying it looks like Reeve \S/ hell if it was based off of TAS or Cain \S/ we would be do the same thing but it doesn't look like theirs. If you've seen my history of posts, then you know i never said that SR is better than SV (because i don't believe that at all), and i certainly do not think SV is ripping off of SR. I'm not sure why people are taking this personally. I HATED many many parts of the movie. In fact, after watching ZOD (season opener), I was even more disappointed in the movie because I had more fun watching those 45 minutes than a 3 hour big budget summer flick.
I don't post here often, (or at least didn't before, but now i do), but again i certainly don't see myself as a person "who show up here out of nowhere" and I certainly am not one of those that think "SR is great compared to SV and everything good from SV is from SR". This is open posting forum, for everyone for a good discussion. Again, it seems like everyone is getting upset just because i said it looks like the SR symbol. No one is copying from anyone else, no one is ripping off the other, because they all have teh same source, and ultimately they will all look the same and similar to each other. Just because you and the others you mentioned are regular posters doesn't mean you can't respect the other "new people" opinions. And like the person said, this is a discussion of the S in smallvile, i don't see how me offering my opinion is a sign of prolonging a dead argument that has moved on?
I think those that come in this forum to say that SR is greater than SV is really insecure about their movie and feel the need to make the rest of the world agree with them. I am a superman comic fan first, and then whatever else comes. Just because i have routh as my avatar doesn't mean my alliance is with SR and i hate SV. If i thought that, I wouldn't watch every episode, and then come here to discuss and see what others have to say about it. I read triplet's reviews, and i see what others liked or disliked about the show. While you're staying to keep the two separate, I'm trying to bring the two together. I don't feel i have to take one side or the other, just like i don't think every superman fan should pick one. It kinda sucks for the middle people who like both, because they have no place where they can share their opinion.

Kal, we've got a manip thread. Why not post those manips there? Both are nice, but are completely off topic here since those logos (on the suit and in conjuction with it) haven't been seen in the show yet.
This isn't rocket science folks. It shouldn't be THAT difficult to understand.
Anyway... back ON TOPIC! Here's two caps from Reunion:

http://www.patcostello.com/temp/reunion3.jpg
It will be interesting to see how they explain the evolution to the more traditional \S/ since it has now made its appearance, especially since the \8/ is still being referenced IN the show.
In Exodus, Jor-El told Clark the \8/ was the mark of his ancestors. Maybe it's like any other form of writing - letters and symbols change through time. Perhaps the \S/ is Clark's current family crest - similar to the Birthright angle - and the \8/ is what it *used* to look like in the past? Whatever it is though, it may be the first time any Superman story incorporated two very different representations of the shield logo. :D

I wonder if he is going to draw the conclusion that it is about Clark and Lex.Lionel will always be the wild card. They tell us so little about what's going on upstairs, and Glover doesn't drop too many hints. I think he likes it that way LOL. We still don't know what exactly happened to Jor-el, and if Lionel can even *read* Kryptonian, never less understand what any of it relates to. Gotta hand it to the writers on that angle.

It doesn't taken a genius to figure that out . duh :oldrazz:Yes, that's what it's setting up to be. But I want to hear it explained in SV. They shouldn't just skirt over those details. That's why we have a show like this. As an extended origin, they can go into great depth about the origin of everything. They spent the better part of an entire season explaining how the FOS came into being. Do you really think they'll just let audiences assume what you've written above? I think not. Also, the \8/ symbol is unique to SV. Like the evolution of the suit, the \8/ has to "mesh" with the traditional Superman \S/ logo in a way that's both logical and entertaining within the context of the show. And while the writers will respect the established mythology, they don't have to be slaves to it. I'm fairly certain we'll get some interesting curve balls thrown in along the way.

The Superman emblem is the family crest of the House Of EL , The \8/ symbol is the Mark of Kal-EL's Ancestors and The Kryptonian letter S.
It doesn't taken a genius to figure that out . duh :oldrazz:
Apparently, neither Mark Waid the writer of "Birthright", nor 60 some-odd years of other distinguished comic book writers meet your standards for genius...
For what its worth, "Birthright" is more or less modern canon for the comics.
In "Birthright" Mr. Waid modifies canon and makes the \S/ the symbol of Krypton. Not the House of El family crest.
"That's what I'm getting at. That if the 'S' is just something Jonathan Kent cobbled up out of thin air so he can call his son 'Superman,' not only does it have no resonance, it makes no sense. Why would Clark think he needs something like that on his shirt? He's a humble man. Likewise, if the 'S' is an El family crest, as cool an idea as that was in Superman: The Movie, I will argue until the end of time that Superman's destiny is not to carry on one family's linage near as much as it is to carry on for an entire culture, an entire race. We don't call him the Last Son of the El Family. We call him the Last Son of Krypton."
Mark Waid-Superman Birthright
In the history of Superman, the \S/ always stood for Superman until S:TM came out. In that movie, the writers effectively changed 40 years of canon and made the \S/ the symbol of the House of EL...
Ergo, the one thing we can say is that the \S/ symbol is whatever the writers want it to be whether a stylized 'S', the EL family crest, the Kryptonian symbol for air, or the actual symbol of Krypton.
The one thing to remember is that the Legend of Superman is a living, breathing, enduring, yet ever changing, myth.
And, it doesn't take a genius to figure that out...

I thought black diamond and warrior angel are lex and clark, with them being friends at first but in the end they end up fighting. Now, we have speculations that lionel will die at the hands of lex, but why can't clark somehow be connected. Lionel knows clark's secret, and maybe when lex tries to kill clark, lionel gets in the way of clark and ends up getting killed (similar to allison's death). And even tho lex is the one who killed lionel, he somehow blames clark for it, because he also felt that lionel loved him more than lex. The comic book could be a foreshadow of what's to come

Those scenes of Clark powering up the Fortress showing the classic colours of the emblem didn't show up in Fallout...right?
That scene wasn't Clark powering up the fortress, that's the same scene where Clark uses the crystal against Baern's powers.

I think its only going to work on the Phantoms. Batista seems to have landed on earth in full flesh and blood, so he is going to have to be exposed of by some other means.
But really when you think about it, is it any worse than say a cop pulling a gun on the bad guy in the cop shows?

I just made up a scenario in my mind where it was soo small that Clark kept loosing it. So he'd go to the fortress, and ask Jor-El for another one. Jor-El getting fed up with Clark's shenanigans, decided to make the next one large enough that Clark couldn't loose it. :D

Hmmm... Everybody out enjoying the holidaze or somethin'? It's been wicked quiet in here. :(
Uhkay, as promised, the Key...
http://www.patcostello.com/temp/key.jpg
Row 1: Obscura, Vortex and Insurgence
Row 2: Fever (two scenes)
Row 3: Rosetta (same sequence was later shown again in Calling)
Row 4: Calling, Exodus
The red Kryptonian letters spell out "SM." Not too hard to figure out what they probably wanted folks to think with those initials. ;)
The blue is the Hope symbol, which was created for the show. Notice that it wasn't included in close ups of the key prior to Fever. It's hard to tell in Insurgence because of the thumb, but that's probably on purpose as they might not have had the design completed at that point.
Also of note, a continuity error in Fever. When Martha hides the key in the flour can in the beginning of the ep, the Hope symbol is present on the key, but when the Hazmat team finds it later, the Hope symbol is missing. Oopsz! LOL They must have used one of the older props.
And finally, the yellow letters is what happens when you're out of ideas, and you need *something* to put on your prop. Who knew Kryptonians used a "Barcode?" LMFAO!!!
I have been thinkin to buy a replica of that key idk if I wanna though

Wow. Talk about raising a thread from the grave.
But on topic, it was great to see the classic \S/ so heavily represented in Bloodline. I've watched every episode, but I don't have them memorized as many people do. In what previous episodes have we seen the full Superman logo?

I like how long it is and how well Tom wears it, but I'm not completely wild about the coat.
:(
You know, the wide lapels are a bit much.

after seeing the costume design up close i dislike it alot. im not sure about this season at all now. they should just cut the crap and give him a realistic looking first type suit. :csad:
i mean jesus, it looks like he spray panted the S a black t shirt. horrible, cheap design IMO.

The suit is "realistic" enough, so what do you want exactly?
Here's the explanation given by TPTB:
"He isn't a guy who is going to put the tights and the boots on yet," Souders said. "He hasn't gone as far as Green Arrow or Black Canary. He's still on his path to becoming that man. But he is definitely recognizing that there is a second identity for him. As much as he knows what Clark Kent looks like, he needs to figure out what the Superman part looks like. So it might not be the costume everybody is used to seeing, but it is one step closer to that."
The suit represents just one part of Clark's acceptance of his otherworldly origins this year. "Up until now Clark has seen himself as human, and he's seen his Kryptonian identity as something to hide," Peterson said. "This year he's embracing his Kryptonian identity and seeing himself solely as a hero, almost to the detriment of living as a human. It's really the pendulum swinging a little too far in the other direction as he finds his ground and balance between the two identities. He's really going to be pulled back into being Clark Kent by the realization that he loves Lois Lane. It's the crux of the year, his burgeoning love for Lois and the love triangle of Clark loves Lois, but Lois loves Superman."

yea some folks just dont know the whole reason behind the look.
Thats what I think most of the negitive comments are coming as a result off ^^
People who see it seem to think they are implying its Smallville's official version of the Superman costume.. which it isn't
Its mostly people who don't watch the show &/or Superman Returns fans being overly negitive about it as well moreso than actual fans of the show.
If this was Superman's final suit on the show there would be a reason to be outraged, but its not so its all fuss over nothing

exactly!
also, the main page has the picture titled tom welling as the man of steel...which is misleading since he's not superman yet. so I guess I could see why people would be pissed if they don't read spoilers or know what direction the show is heading.

Totally have a point their guys. Also i was just thinking of this. Compared to the size/shape/place the \8/ on clark's chest end of season 2/start of season 3 and the \S/ he is now wearing for season 9. How does each of their size/placement feel for you guys?

The Suit is in an evolving process just like the superman emblem went through an evolving process in this series . From The Kryptonian \8/ symbol to The House of EL emblem .

Based on the trailer moreso than that shot I think the size of the logo looks alright, placement wise I think it does look a little low. I am 100% certain it only looks low because the neckline is so high due to it being a t-shirt..
I reckon it does need elevated an inch or 2 maybe.. but thats just me being pedantic

Thats something I'm not 100% sure on in the Smallville mythos, the logo originally seemed the start out as an \8/ but evolved into an \S/ somewhere along the road..
It the \S/ The Hous of El emblem whereas the \8/ is just the Kryptonian version of the letter S..
Really I'm not too sure on the subject, I always assumed it was just something they felt they maybe made a mistake on & have gradually edged the \8/ like figure out & moved the \S/ version in.. ?

Yea i forgot myself what they said the 8 was at the earlier seasons, then finally around season 6 they brought in the standard S logo.

the \8/ shield could also be a Kryptonian "J" in the shield of EL (for Jor-el)
just to throw another take on it.

According to the Kryptonian alphabet used in the comics, the \8/ is the Kryptonian glyph for "S".

Ha, never noticed that. So depending on the orientation and other symbols around it, you can make a C, G, J, and S.
