How did Pat forget about Naked Clark?Oh, trust me, I didn't forget. Hee!!! But you can only post six images in one message, and I didn't want to hog all the glory. LOL Like I said, there's TONS of \8/, \S/ and even shields in four seasons of SV. I'll post some more tonight. The Torch mascot was going to be in my next post, if somebody doesn't beat me to it. Feel free. :D

Hmmm... Everybody out enjoying the holidaze or somethin'? It's been wicked quiet in here. :(

Uhkay, as promised, the Key...

http://www.patcostello.com/temp/key.jpg

Row 1: Obscura, Vortex and Insurgence
Row 2: Fever (two scenes)
Row 3: Rosetta (same sequence was later shown again in Calling)
Row 4: Calling, Exodus

The red Kryptonian letters spell out "SM." Not too hard to figure out what they probably wanted folks to think with those initials. ;)

The blue is the Hope symbol, which was created for the show. Notice that it wasn't included in close ups of the key prior to Fever. It's hard to tell in Insurgence because of the thumb, but that's probably on purpose as they might not have had the design completed at that point.

Also of note, a continuity error in Fever. When Martha hides the key in the flour can in the beginning of the ep, the Hope symbol is present on the key, but when the Hazmat team finds it later, the Hope symbol is missing. Oopsz! LOL They must have used one of the older props.

And finally, the yellow letters is what happens when you're out of ideas, and you need *something* to put on your prop. Who knew Kryptonians used a "Barcode?" LMFAO!!!

I went back and looked at the caps for Spell.. thinking that at the end, when Clark got his powers back, that there was an \S/ on his chest. Oddly enough, it's not an \S/ at all.. it's kind of an X shape. Still, a cool shot.

I highly doubt the colours were meant to be connected to Superman.

Yellow, blue and red are the three primary colours. If you mixed those properly, you can get any other colour in existence but that takes practice and colour-mixing knowledge (or a colour wheel). My Colour Theory made us use black, white, red, yellow and blue gouache (and no other) all semester to get used to mixing them.

AgentPat

If we really bring those colors in to play every flannel shirt clark has worn would appear. They know the colors are a tease. No doubt, but some teases are more overt than others. When the camera pans over objects that are specifically shown to be red, blue and yellow, it's painfully obvious. And we don't even have to SEE the colors. In Red, Jesse asks Lana who the stud in primary colors is (referring to Clark, of course.) Clark wasn't even wearing his bright blue shirt in that scene - it was the lighter blue one, and black jeans. That's it (http://www.devotedfansnetwork.com/dtsgallery/displayimage.php?album=35&pos=28). So why'd Jessie say "primary colors?" Hee! It's silly, but it's just more of a tease through dialog.

I completly agree.

If we look at the use (or occasional over use) of items from the Superman mythos, I believe that colors and any reference to them would prove to be the most abundant used by the show. Even more so that the \S/ or \8/, or angelic symbols.

Even more so that the \S/ or \8/, or angelic symbols.Visually, I bet you're right. But I think the plethora of overt references has been in the dialog. They didn't waste any time with that either. One of the most descriptive synopsis of the entire show was in two lines of actual dialog from the Pilot:

Lana: What are you, man or superman?
Clark: I haven't figured it out yet.

Brilliant! :D

Yes I do concede that those references most people would catch are in the dialogue. However, when comparing the # of times a reference comes up in dialogue vs the # of visual references, I think there are a larger # of subtle/subliminal visual references like color, because in every shot there is something red, blue or yellow. Really how many times have we seen Clark w/o at least one of these colors, and I'll even discount the appearance of blue jeans.

BTW, way to work in the word plethora. Large vocabulary isn't exactly something usually in abundance on message boards.

It's for the actors and their own amusement... I used to work in theatre and the props people did little "in jokes" like that all the time.

It relieves the monotony, doesn't read to the audience, and is still pretty damn funny.

Look at the placement of the forcefield "swirl" on his chest.
As for his chin, the forcefield "swirl" looks even more like a familiar 'S!'

so ive seen every episode of smallvill and i for the life of me cant remember the episode where the purpose and meaning of \8/ is explained. and i cant remember what it means ether.....any help? It's just SV's take on the Superman \S/ shield. The infinity symbol ("8") correlates to the letter "S" in the DC comics created Kryptonian alphabet, so the SV folks just ran with it, and in a big way. I love it! It's different, but still very appropriate. I'm looking forward to see how they will eventually morph it into the more familiar \S/ logo. :D

Oh, and btw, Dr. Doom, listen to the commentary track on Memoria. They may not have been totally successful, but the memory tank WAS indeed constructed to resemble the Superman diamond shield, albeit elongated for the actors to lay inside of it. There was an awful lot of water in that tank, so they couldn't make it to scale - it would have been too massive, not to mention dangerous. A rectangle tank big enough to hold a person, say 6 feet long by 2 feet wide by 2 feet tall, holds 180 gallons of water. Water weighs 8.33 pounds per gallon. Do the math. That's 1500 pounds! Factor in the glass, which would weigh about 310 pounds, and the person inside of it, and you have a TON of weight. I'm not surprised they had to skimp in areas, just to be safe. As it is, the tank they used probably had way over a ton of water in it alone. Look at the size of it compared to Welling. He's a big guy; it looks like you could put TWO of him in there - comfortably! LOL

The SR shield (as seen in the film's marketing poster) has a rounded top instead of being flat. It also has a flatter profile; it's not as tall. The SV suit logo will probably be even more different than that.

Yes the diamond shape [shield] is from The classic one, But you can't deny the S symbol isn't the same as The one for RETURNS , because it is . Look at the two pics. It's excatly the same .

You guys arguing this here, too?

[cuts and pastes posts from Superworld]

It's not the exact same shield. The SR shield is more flatter overall (width greater than height), and it has rounded sides, most notably at the top...

http://www.patcostello.com/temp/shield-sr.jpg http://www.patcostello.com/temp/shield-sr2.jpg

The SV shield is taller and has flat sides...

http://www.patcostello.com/temp/shield-sv.jpg http://www.patcostello.com/temp/shield-sv2.jpg

Both are raised emblems and have the same tail on the S, but the SR shield has an additional raised line that runs laterally down the body of the letter.

They're NOT the same. Time to move on, yes?

Super Kal
10-01-2006, 07:57 PM
technically, they're almost the same... but they're nto exactly the same. the above post shows a small difference in the shapes that create the "S" in the insignia:

on the SR symbol, the triangle on the top of the largest symbol is much smaller than the oen shown in the Smallville episode...

Also, in the SR symbol, the part of the largest symbol that makes the top curve of the "S" is much skinnier and has a much fuller "S" shape than the smallville counterpart

AgentPat

^ Exactly. There's enough minor differences in both emblems to fulfill the legal requirements in percentage - whatever that amount is - for the two shields to be called "different." Both are still fully trademarked logos of Warners however, and both represent the Superman franchise.

Actually... now that I think about it, I'm surprised folks aren't arguing a whole different thing now since the real deal Superman shield has finally shown up on Smallville. :p

Well it fits the show that's why.Well, I like to think it fits SUPERMAN, and that's why it's being done that way. There will always be exceptions to every rule - even SV has had "dark" episodes (Vengeance) - but I think SV's approach is to touch that collective mentality people have of the world in which Superman exists. He's the antithesis of Batman. He lives in a bright, golden world of primary colors. Unlike Gotham, Metropolis is a city of the day, which is fitting since Superman is a character powered by the sun.

Now, c'mon folks. Lets keep this thread on topic. Save discussion about the suit for another thread, eh? As to the logo, THIS is what we actually saw on SMALLVILLE...

Outside of the fact it's an "S" within a general diamond shaped border, I think there's a huge difference (color, profile, flat borders, etc). Why are you pressing the argument? You think it's the same S. Great. Other people disagree. Move on. Please? Or take the comparisons to SuperWorld. I'm asking nicely.
