As a fellow Adobe Illustrator enthusiast I can say that you work is some of the best I have seen as of late. Your entry for the Batman Begins contest was very impressive. How long does it take you to create one of these, like the Batman for instance?

the batman took sometime... i work two jobs and i try to get some freelance when i can, so i would say a better part of a week. about 3-4 hours a day. i just like using illustrator, give things a new look, looks more custom then just a regular photo shop job. thanks for the great complimants. here, this is what im workin on for my fantastic four contest. also very time consuming. this is about 5 hours worth, give or take..

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/iambilly81/the-thing-1.jpg

still needs alot of work, but you should be at least able to tell who it is.

It's cool, it's cool. I'm just lookin' out for my man, Dave . . . funniest M'F'er alive. Hopefully he'll be back on the air soon, or HBO will pick him . . . wishful thinking I guess.

I completely agree with you about Illustrator. It's nice to see someone else here feels the same way about the certain quality you get with Illustrator, I was beginning to think that everyone was using Photoshop for artwork rather than a mixture of the two.

Your F4 entry looks fantastic (no pun intended)....and trust me, I know all about spending many many hours trying to complete once piece.

Keep up the good work!

u got some good tutorials :D i wanna learn how to do that
or do you got some tips?

1. Get REAL friendly with the pen tool

2. Learn about "fills" and "strokes"

3. Learn how to manipulate text (spacing, creating outlines...etc)

4. Learn your "quick keys" (helps me save A LOT of time)

CTRL + Z = UNDO

CTRL + SHIFT + Z = REDO

CTRL + Y = WIREFRAM MODE (SHOWS EXACTLY HOW YOU BUILT YOUR ART)

CTRL + J = JOINS 2 POINTS OF AN OBJECT TOGETHER

Learning those 4 aspects would give you a good start, but nothing beats a hands on learning experience.

im doing that favor that SONKA asked illustrators for. and its just for fun too. since alot of people been askin me how i do my work, i figured this would be a good way to show.

stage one:

i take the photo reference and place it in photo shop, either a picture or a drawling

i do all the black n dark first, as a top layer. making the lines as smooth as possible, not alot of penn points.

like so:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/iambilly81/the-resistance-1.jpg

as i go farther n farther on it, ill keep posting them here and on his thread. if you have any questions or feed back, let me know.

hope this is a help to those who asked.

And I've TRIED to tell people about photoshop lens flare being poo poo...but noone listens to me.Granted, things might have improved... but, examples:

The equipment was seriously lacking in being up to date. Such as, the camera that was "top of the line" had a lower megapixel count than my $300 camera that I got for christmas.

Half of the teachers (while nice), were untrained in teaching. Example: We were learning coldfusion (web coding) and when we would copy the text from the book, and test it, it wouldn't work. FOR ANY OF US. The teacher responded with "well, you at least saw how to do it."

Administrators ignored our complaints and requests.

One of my fondest memories... They took us out of class during one of our final weeks (rushing to finish projects) to show us an hour long presentation of the new building they were building (instead of buying us up-to-date equipment). After the power point presentation was over, the administrator said "So, how many of you will be at the new building." Not a single person raised their hands, because ALL of us in the room were graduating in a week.

Other reasons, but I have to go.

PM me if you want more reasons (again, they might have improved, this was two years ago. And a bunch of parents filed a class action suite last year because of these problems, so they might have improved because of that).

Humberto Ramos (Spectacular Spider-Man) and Terry Dodson (MK Spider-Man) draw some of THE BEST Spidey comics of all time. Both of them have a very unique style that really makes Spidey "pop".

iambilly81
07-26-2005, 10:27 AM
yeah, i loved ramos's take on spiderman and venom.... he added alot to the caracters i thought, and brought popularity back to the spiderman books. made people do a double take.

his venom style with the large morphing body with the giant spider comming off of his body just made me go, man, thats what venom is suppost to look like.

lionhart
07-26-2005, 10:50 AM
My one complaint on Dodson's Spidey art is his Venom. I can't stand those damn pupils for some reason. I guess it's because it just looks like a costume, not a symbiote.

0neDisturbedSOB

I thought Dodson's take on Venom was unique....I liked the new symbol too, made it look more organic.

lionhart
07-26-2005, 11:57 AM
I admit that it's unique, but unique doesn't make everything great. You could call RuPaul unique.....But I guess I'm just used to Ramos's Venom now. I love the man trapped inside a monster look that is sometimes shown for Venom, especially with Ramos. Dodson's just looked like another costume to me.

yeah, about half a year ago, they did a 4 book story of venom vs carnage, but it wasnt like a big huge fight, it was a fight over carnages son..... toxin. but the art work was great and it was a decent story. anyone else here read it? or the toxin mini series?

Any chance you could turn it into a wallpaper for me when you're done?

Billy those guys on the other thread dont know what they are talking about. You are not copying, if they consider what you do copying, then they have to consider an artist using a model copying. You do a great job and as far as im conserned they are jealous.

The superman looks great, cant wait to see it finished.

Billy I hope you don't mind me posting this, but I thought I'd share sort of a step-by-step on how I duplicate pics (which BTW is a good excercise to do with any program)

1) Find the pic. In this case it's Matsuda's promotional piece from "The Batman"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/TheBatman_Joker.jpg

2) Begin building the "wire frame" with the pen tool

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/THE-BATMAN-Batman-VS-Joker-.jpg

3) Start filling in certain areas to separate them (helps coloring)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/The-Batman-VS-Joker-line-ar.jpg

4) Add base colors

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/THE-BATMAN-Batman-VS-Joker2.jpg

5) Continue with the colors

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/THE-BATMAN-Batman-VS-Joker3.jpg

6) Make adjustments. I color as I go so it's not unusual for me to have something half drawn like this

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/THE-BATMAN-Batman-VS-Joker4.jpg

7) Finish up (although it's not done)

ha, dont worry i got an idea. and SOB wants a wallpaper out of it, so i got a couple ideas in mind, and now im thinking of making that whole JLA a side project for me.......doing the whole thing. take alot of time, but it would look good i think.

Drakon

Double. Meaning, I would like to see it too.

Sure, no big. You were getting an unfair critisism, so I backed you up. Had his problem been with the artwork specifically, as opposed to saying that it's not art, it woulda been all on you to watch your back, providing he wasn't just bashing your work without any C&C, and that's only really an executable law in the confines of Fan Art. Let that be a lesson learned--whenever you post your art somewhere where more than just art appreciaters can see, then chances are, you won't get very artistic response.

iambilly81
07-27-2005, 12:27 PM
i was just trying to get it across to him what he was lookin at, and it just wasnt gettin to him. and if it was about my art i wouldnt have fought so hard, but he wasnt excepting that vector art is art. saying im not an artist. and it got to me. thats all.

thanks for the back up though.

hopefully i wont need it again.

I am officially impressed. That is one of the best pieces of vector art I think I've ever seen. I would love to have you make it into a wallpaper for me so I can put it on my work desktop...maybe slide the picture to the left and make the rest of it that dark blue you've got.

Amazing work man.

PS: The "S" is still crooked! :)

i dont know, the S looks ok to me, i changed it from the first time after you said something, but ill re look at it.... and as far as the best i dont know about that, it was kind of a hurry up job, only took me a couple hours. but to be honest i really liked doing it.

glad you and spider-bat liked it, and ill get on with the desk top here in a little bit...

should i do the batman in that JLA pic....or maybe green lantern?

I was actually at the filming for that. Sandy (the director) said that it was JUST a trailer, not meant to be a full on deal like "Dead End".

Sadly, I didn't think World's Finest even came close to how good Dead End was.

yeah, worlds finest was a good idea, and it had some good points, but dead end was much better.

and for the redesign marvel thread, i did a redo of omega red......just a sketch, depending what the likes n dislikes are, it will change

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/iambilly81/omega_red.jpg

i was thinking of the character and all i could think about was technology, metal, and russia. so thought oposite........redneck hick. redneck... omega red..... its a far reach, but i thought it was an ok idea. and i didnt see anyone try to redo him yet. so i figured i would try.

I am biased towards Dead End because I was actually a PART of it's making. I remember Sandy telling me his idea while we sat outside at a Tommy Burger in Westminister. I also remember standing there in the FREEZING COLD weather under rain machines for about 8hrs....but I will never forget seeing Clark walk outside for the first time completely dressed in the Batman costume, THAT was awesome.

It's weird because I haven't talked to Sandy in over a year, and Clark has become a really good friend of mine.

"WF" was just weak because it was rushed so much and because Sandy's ego got the best of him. I mean come on, who the hell puts Batman out in broad daylight under a freeway overpass like it's going to hide him??

Grayson was phenomenal.

Grayson was phenomenal.Understandable. I know I'd be a bit biased towards something I was directly linked to. And yes, Clark WAS an awesome Batman. That Joker kicked ass, too.

I also agree that expecting the overpass to hide Batman was a flaw, but overlooking it, I was still really pleased.

And I must concur, Greyson WAS phenomenal. Except for that Green Lantern at the end. That sucked, mostly because of his eyeware.
