Blue Ambitions: The Beast & Mystique X3 Thread.
Thread inspired by SHH! member Lightnin' Strikez!

Welcome to the first official thread dedicated solely to Kelsey Grammer aka Dr. Hank McCoy (Beast) and Rebecca Romijn aka Raven Darkholme (Mystique)...the fantastic BLUE characters of X3 (sorry, Nightcrawler) :( Here, we will discuss all things blue, in relation to both Beast and Mystique respectively.

You can discuss Nightcrawler as well, but seeing as he's possibly going to not be featured anywhere in X3, the thread is titled to the two character who are locked and confirmed.Lets talk about the comic book characters, the actors, and their roles in X3. Also feel free to post your favorite pictures of these fantastic blue mutants!

Beast is an awesome character and Kelsey Grammer is perfect for the role.

Oooooh, nice formatting.

Next, that sketch of Beast makes him look like some kind of giant sloth.

Finally, I wonder whether we'll get to see Beast and Mystique in a scene together? I suspect not, unless she's in the form of Senator Kelly.

BEAST:
The Comic Book Character

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/catwomanmovie/200px-NEWX148.jpg

Codename: Beast
Real Name: Dr. Henry 'Hank' Philip McCoy
Sex:Male
Race:Homo Superior
Occupation: X-Man, Scientist
Identity: Publicly known
Legal Status:Citizen of the United States with no criminal record
Place of Birth: Dunfee, Illinoise
Marital Status: Single
Known Relatives: Norton McCoy - father; Edna McCoy - mother.
Current Group Membership:The X-Men
Former Group Membership: The Avenger, The Defenders, X-Factor
Base of Operations: Xavier School for the Gifted

Known Superhuman Powers: Hank McCoy has superhuman strength and endurance, as well as superhuman coordination (he can perform many tasks with his feet as easily as a human would do with his hands) and speed. The physical manifestations of his mutation are his elongated limbs and oversized extremeties, which were evident since birth. Experimenting with his mutation, Hank inadvertently gave himself blue (originally grey) fur and a more simian posture. Following a critical injury, he mutated even further, changing from a primate to a more feline appearance. His level of superhuman strength and speed have been augmented moderately over the years by these various physiological changes, but it should be noted that they remain purely a product of his enhanced physiology, rather than of any higher power source.

Mystique:
The Comic Character

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/catwomanmovie/230px-Mystique11.png

Real Name: Raven Darkholme
Alias: Mystique; Mallory Brickman
Place Of Birth: Unknown
Birthdate: Unknown
Species: Human/Mutant (Homo Superior)
Age: Unknown
Eye Color: Yellow
Hair Color: Red/Orange
Weight: 120 lbs.
Height: 5'10
Family And Friends: Unofficial Foster Daughter - Rogue[/url]; Husband - Ralph Brickman; Daughter - Gloria Brickman; Son - Graydon Creed (Deceased)

History: Little has been revealed about Mystique's past. Indeed, since she can eliminate the outward signs of aging with her shape-changing power, it is not known exactly how old she is. She apparently learned to use her shape-changing power at a very early age, for there is no evidence known to the public or the United States government that Raven Darkholme ever looked like anything but a normal human being. Years ago Mystique had an affair with the mutant Sabretooth and they had a son, Graydon Creed, the recently assassinated presidential candidate. Mystique has also claimed to be the mother of Nightcrawler, a member of the X-Men, as the result of a liaison with another, unnamed man. Mystique is known to be a longtime friend of the mutant Destiny who is now deceased. At some point in recent years Mystique became the protectress of the young mutant named Rogue, and looked upon Rogue as a surrogate daughter.

Powers: Mystique is a mutant metamorph. She can psionically shift the atoms and molecules of her body and of whatever clothing she is wearing so as to change her and its appearance. As a result she can cause herself to look and sound like an exact duplicate of any human, humanoid, or semi-humanoid being of either sex, wearing virtually any kind of clothing. Her control is so exact that she can precisely duplicate another person's retina pattern in her own eyes, finger, palm and skin-pore patterns on her own hands and skin, and vocal cords to match voices to the point of corresponding voiceprints.

First Appearance: As Raven Darkholme, in the comic Ms. Marvel #16; as Mystique, in the comic Ms. Marvel #18

You have to wonder how she managed to slide backward through those doors. I mean, the floor doesn't look that slippery.

You'll note on the trailer the scene is changed slightly too to make it available to a wider audience.

Perhaps the floor was powdered as opposed to oiled. Talcum powder works wonders, especially when combined with the prosthetic appliances she wore.

How will Beast be brought to the big screen?
A look at previous quotes.

Mike Elizalde mentioned earlier that Kelsey Grammer had been life scanned for his Beast suit, and talks about the Beast effects @ IESB.net (Video interview (http://www.iesb.net/upcomingfilm/movie060705.php))

While Grammer might seem a surprise to play a 355-pound blue-colored brute, producer Avi Arad said, "Kelsey was born to play the role," explaining that Beast is the most intelligent of the mutants, a pacifist Ph.D. and genetic researcher named Hank McCoy.

"This is a big role in the new movie, and when we met with him, you can see that Kelsey has that you'd-better-have-a-dictionary-handy intelligence," said Arad, who's producing with Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter.

(07.12.05) Will Juggernaut and Beast be CGI characters? If not, how will they do the suits for both of them, and the acrobatics for Beast? - Justin

XMF's Reply: The actor will be put into a complicated outfit, with numerous prosthetics (Rebecca Romijn's Mystique had it easy!). The Beast character will be a blend of practical and computer effects...in the case of CGI, it will be used especially when the character is agile, and performing extraordinary feats. - www.xmenfilms.net

Romijn getting into shape for X3
Thanks Electric Wire

KANGAROO JACK star JERRY O'CONNELL has stepped in to train his girlfriend REBECCA ROMIJN for the third X-MEN movie when it starts shooting next month (AUG05).

The actor has picked up enough tips from his brother CHARLIE, who used to be a professional fitness trainer in Hollywood, to set his girlfriend a rigorous work-out schedule, so she'll look great when she reprises her role as all-blue MYSTIQUE.

Romijn feels it's the least her man can do - as he's partly responsible for her weight gain, which has got gossips speculating about her health for the past few months.

She explains, "I've had a great year with my boyfriend. I fell in love and had lots of romantic dinners. It was worth every last chocolate mousse and bottle of wine. But now it's crunch time.

You know talking about the blue fur/cgi and such for Beast, they really made a casting mistake, they should of gotten Robin Williams. Think about it, for him all they'd need to do is dunk him in some blue hair dye, his excessive body hair will do the rest. :cyclops: [Ions is joking]

It's good to see that there are still shows and stuff out there who are acknowledging the X-Men...For a while there it was just nothing but Spider-Man gags all over the place...

Who IS Kelsey Grammer?
His biography.

http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/new_line_cinema/15_minutes/kelsey_grammer/15minutes.jpg

(1999) A three-time Emmy Award winner, Grammer is the first actor in television history to receive multiple Emmy nominations for performing the same role on three series. He received two nominations for his original portrayal of Dr. Frasier Crane on "Cheers" (1982), another for his guest appearance in that role on "Wings" (1990), and eight nominations (earning three awards) as Outstanding Actor for his work on "Frasier" (1993). Over the years, Dr. Frasier Crane has become one of television's most endearing and enduring characters. In addition to his Emmys, Grammer has won two Golden Globe Awards, two American Comedy Awards and a People's Choice Award for his portrait. Grammer's distinctive voice has been heard in several hit animated features, including the voice of Stinky Pete in Disney's hit Toy Story 2Anastasia (1997). On television, he has also been seen in several mini-series and movies. In 1996, he hosted an hour-long salute to Jack Benny for which he served as executive producer. He also starred in HBO's award-winning The Pentagon Wars (1998) (TV).

Born in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, Grammer was raised by his mother and grandfather in New Jersey and then Florida. After his grandfather's death, Grammer was drawn to the works of 'William Shakespeare' and spent two years at the prestigious Juilliard School. He then dove into the world of regional theater, eventually making the leap to Broadway with roles in "Macbeth" and "Othello." He joined the cast of "Cheers" (1982) in 1984. His autobiography, So Far, was published in fall 1995.

Interesting fact: Has appeared with Patrick Stewart in three different productions: "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987), "Frasier" (1993) and X-Men 3 (2006).

From Grammer's IMDB page.

Here's a question that has been bothering me. Will Beast's eyes be gold/yellow or will they be Kelsey's normal color? Which would look better? If they go gold/yellow, will they CG them in as they did for Mystique, or will Kelsey wear contacts? What are your preferrences?

(ok, that is more than one question......)

I kinda want Kelseys own eye color. But if its a new yellow that is different from both Mystiques and Nightcrawlers, well so be it.

JustABill

I believe Kelsey has blue eyes. I guess to be accuarate they would need to be gold/yellow though. (can't have the folks stomping their feet about Beast having the wrong eye color). But I'm tired of gold/yellow eyes.

However, if they weren't so in-your-face gold/yellow it wouldn't be so bad. Perhaps a subtle muted amber? Or even leaning to a more copper color wouldn't be bad. I don't know, I haven't had my coffee yet so I'm a bit befuzzled.

You know talking about the blue fur/cgi and such for Beast, they really made a casting mistake, they should of gotten Robin Williams. Think about it, for him all they'd need to do is dunk him in some blue hair dye, his excessive body hair will do the rest. :cyclops: [Ions is joking] You, myself and one other person are the only people I know who honestly think Williams could do Beast. Not that I'm not happy with Fraiser-Beast. but Williams was my first choice.

I wouldn't mind seeing blue eyes, but here's the next question:

Should they make Beast's eyes cat-like, or human-like? You know what I'm talking about. The pupil of the eye? Are his eyes cat-like now (in the comics), since he went through that 2nd mutation, which made him look less human? Or are they regular I can't remember.

Yes, but Robin just doesn't have a very great voice for Beast. I wouldn't want to hear his voice come from Beast's lips. Kelsey's an AMAZING choice, and has the perfect voice to match. The voice, yes. That would have been weird, but easily able to adjust to, [But I also have to deal with weird voices all the time anyway, so maybe I'm just easily adapting]. Williams, however, would have perfect delivery of most/all cornball jokes that we know and love Hank for. Again, I'm more than satisfied with Grammar, but Williams, in my opinion, would have dune just as well.

JustABill

True, Robin would have perfect delivery on those lines, but just that's not the voice I hear when I read the comics. Neither is Kelsey's either. That honor belongs to George Buza. Heh, but we can't have him as Beast can we, since we had him in that oh so pivotal role of the truck driver.

Drakon

I refer to it as "Character Association".

Nothing against James Marsden, but his voice doesn't seem as commanding as the voice from the cartoon. I know that one is a cartoon, and the other is real life, but it's just hard to get behind that voice. It doesn't scream "Leadership". I think that's the same problem I have with Halle Berry. In the comics, Storm is portrayed as a very strong woman, and no matter how hard I try, or how many of her movies I see, Halle Berry doesn't give me that vibe. Hell, I think Angela Basset does a better job at that. [Not to diss Berry, but that's merely my opinion.]

Character Association.. makes sense, And I know exactly what you mean about James and Halle. I used to post on a Sci-fi board and when they argued about acting and directing and who who was bad or who was good, my main point was attitude. I know this goes to acting, but the main thing I would change about both those characters would be their voice portrayal of the character. Neither of them spoke in the mannerisms of their comic counterpart. I bet even the crappy lines that were used in those movies would have been 10x better had someone just showed James and Halle how to speak them better.

^ that was a "freakin" awesome theme! I used to get a chill when that show would come on.
*reminices about the good ol days*

She's little more than a parody of seriousness. Swordfish, Monster's Ball, even the X films, I can't take her seriously. It's like the casting director sat and said "How many hot black chicks can I think of? Halle Berry.........Halle Berry!! Call her!". Hell, even Stacy Dash would have been a good choice in terms of screen presence It has been hard for me to take Halle serious. I think I was more impressed by her "Queen" performance because I would never have expected her to deliver that kind of emotion. The casting call was definitely a call for "cuteness" but I guess that's what they thought they needed at the time.

Stacy Dash??!! LOL... she would have invited Damon to be the Xmen DJ. Can you imagine that soundtrack....scary!!!

Part of me is sad that they had to resort to that, and the other part is sad that it worked. But alas. I'm willing to take one for the team if it means that I can potentially get what I want in the future.

I could see that, but I also could see that being one of the things easily changed. You know to throw us off. And beast has been used in just about every "Serum" story the Xmen has ever had. They always have him in the same capacity... ambiguous about being big blue! I think this may be a new plot twist they are trying to keep secret.

A poster (Remylebeau) on the Countingdown.com boards spotted this drawing on the official site of the artist who did the Cyclops vs Juggernaut storyboard. Could this be his impression of Beast? I know that the title says Elf Hunter but i can't find anything on such a film. I wouldn't mind Beast looking like this.

Its a very cool concept - but it doesnt look very much like Kelsey. If the artist rendered it with Kelsey's likeness but in the same beast style - then I'm not sure itd look so good. Then again - the mouth is quite similar and the forehead is big enough - maybe if it had a squarer jaw itd be more like him. Nice though - cant wait for the official photo! You all reckon it'll be in uniform, in a lab coat and trunks, in shorts and t-shirt, or in beige pants and flannel shirt?

The bad thing is that b/c it's in black and white, it looks like an older Wolverine with pointy ears. In other words, it looks too..ordinary to be Beast. But with color, maybe it can stand out a bit, ya know.

I have a question (well questions actually) about Mystique's scar that she got from Wolverine in X1 and as we all know it is still visible in X2. Is it suppose to heal? Can she change it back to normal again? As far as I know her shape-shifting ability keeps her young. She can shape-shift whatever flaw that she have in her body, from scar to body tissue. Did Bryan Singer and the rest made an error about this? Or is it me? Can anyone answer this?

lots of early work on characters doesn't look right if its in black and white. go back and look at some of the Nightcrawler work. it doesn't really look like Alan Cumming at all, just like some scrawny guy with pointy ears and three fingers.

The resembelance is uncanny. Folks this looks like it actually might be authentic concept art. This might be a glimpse of what Beast might look like. Then again they could go a totally different route since its just concept art still interesting nonetheless. The Mulroney just looks to much like that drawing not for it to be true in my mind.

I work at a popular tourist area in Vancouver and today when I went to work I heard that Kelsey Grammer was in our store a few days ago. My co-workers were too shy to ask for an autograph! I wish I was working that day. Supposedly he ate some of our candy and paid for it afterwards.

Wilson was actually cast but had to back out due to a scheduling confilct. Imagine the X-Men cast if Singer had gotten his first choice for some of the roles (not bad)

-Dougray Scott - Logan/Wolverine
-James Caviezel - Scott Summers/Cyclops
-Peta Wilson - Dr.Jean Grey
-Angela Basset - Ororo Munroe/Storm
-Maggie Cheung - Yuriko Oyama/Lady Deathstrike
-Ethan Embry - Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler

ya i saw kelsey he was cool loking a very dark blue and the muscle suit looked huge even from 20 feet away which is as close as i got to him in full makeup. it was funnny though he spoke on his cell for a while in his normal voice that looked very strange!! i also met bill duke who plays the secaritary of defence , the actor who plays the lead general and the president as well. there was a girl who is playing one of magneto's bad mutant kids it was her first xmen film and she plays avery small part a got a couple of pics of her and the director though.

so either they mention scarlet witch as Magneto's daughter in the film or the poster was just privy to X-men world.
