Since everyone has their own thread full of great comic and non-comic related artwork I thought I'd start my own. I've got a ton of stuff scattered in various threads so I thought I'd post some some stuff that has been shown before, and some that hasn't (both comic and non-comic related).

This stuff was done over many, many years from pencil sketches, to ink work to the first time I attempted to use Adobe Illustrator (6 years ago). I am always open to any comments/criticism you might have, just as long as there's no arguing going on....I'm not even going to go through that again.

Hope you like it!

Some freelance work I did for a new TV station dedicated to "X-treme" sports. These were done about 4 years ago all in Illustrator. Sadly the station never got picked up, but hey, I got paid for my time and got some cool portfolio pieces out of it.

The VERY FIRST Illustrator piece I ever did. Obviously it's the logo from the "Batman/Superman Adventures" ok Kids WB! a few years back. I was pretty happy when I finished it because I learned how to use different shades of colors to achieve different effects, and I could duplicate something pretty spot on.

DVD disc covers I did for the fan film "Batman: Dead End". These were done about 2 years ago for Sandy Collora (the director).

Misc. clothing designs I did while I was working as a designer for a clothing company. A lot of these actually went into production, the ones that didn't I kept the rights to (such as the american flag one below....notice it on my Captain America redesign?)

A logo and T-shirt design I did for a friend of mine who owns the local comic book shop. He told me he wanted an Ed McGuinness-esque superhero (oversized muscles) with a really corny almost comical face. He really liked the picture McGuinness did of Superman flying straight up so we used that as a basis for the picture. He had these screen printed onto shirts for last years SDCC. The logo took about 30min, and the t-shirt design took around 10hrs to complete.

Some fun Batman & Spider-Man pics I did using the look from "iMucha Lucha!". These were done about a year or so ago all in Illustrator, and they took about 2hrs each.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Mucha%20Lucha/MUCHA-LUCHA-Batman.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Mucha%20Lucha/MUCHA-LUCHA-Spider-Man.jpg

A recreation of a Teen Titans pic I saw and loved when the show was starting up. This was done all in Illustrator with the original pic as a template. It took around 12hrs to do because of all of the complex shading some of the characters have. I really like this pic because it reminds me of a 70's poster with the different characters in different colors.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/TeenTitans2.jpg

Another recreation of a scene from "The Batman" teaser that was aired about a year ago promoting the show. A friend screen capped this scene because I loved it so much and I went to work to see if I could do it. The screen cap was thumbnail so I'm not sure if it's 100% accurate or not. This only took about 1hr to do. I decided to place the "wireframe" model above the final picture to show the construction. I recreated the logo from the show, dropped it in with the little comic "blurbs" and it was done.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/THE-BATMAN-Batmobile-interi.jpg

Batarang from "The Batman". I liked the design and did the drawing while I had the show on pause then made this to make it look like an official conceptual piece. This only took about 20min from start to finish.

Drawing I did of Bale's head from Batman Begins. I simplified the shadows and cut these out into stickers....actually turned out pretty good. These took about 1hr to complete.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/The%20Batman/Begins-head-sticker.jpg

Some of my personal favorites. Logos & weapon designs I did when I was on my initial redesign kick alittle over a year ago. I had always wanted to see a darker year one style animated show so I did an entire line of redesigns (that started my whole urge to redesign every character). These are some original logos/weapon designs I came up with for fun.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Batman%20Year%20One/BATMAN-YEAR-ONE-Logo.jpg This took about 20min to design, and about 5min to actually execute. I really like the unique shape of this one.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Batman%20Year%20One/Batman-Year-One-alt-logo.jpg Same timeframe as the one above.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Batman%20Year%20One/BATMAN-YEAR-ONE-Batarang-co.jpg This took about 5min to design (since it's basically a variation of the previous one I did) but about a 1.5hrs to execute because I had to research all of the technical jargain to make it look "official".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Batman%20Year%20One/BATMAN-YEAR-ONE-Mini-Batara.jpg Same timeframe as one above.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Batman%20Year%20One/BATMAN-YEAR-ONE-Grappling-g.jpg Design took about 30min since it's based on his gun from TAS. The other stuff like the technical breakdown took about 45min.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Sketchbook/Ninja-Batman-logo.jpg Original logo concept for my "Ninja Batman" character. The design took about 15min to do and the execution took around 5. I REALLY like this one because it's so unique. It resembles the Batman Beyond logo slightly, but it looks almost dragon-esque.

Sandy and I WERE close friends at one point, sort of like a mentor to me but that all went south about a year ago. I actually worked on "Dead End", even got credited at the end. These are the OFFICIAL labels that he used for the DVDs he made, if you have an official one this label is on it.

MAYBE. I like to do pin-up pieces for fun but I am no where near being called a "comic book artist". I have done very few sequential pieces, it's actually something I'm working towards improving right now. Unfortunately if I were to take on something like what you're asking I would have to be paid for it....I just can't dedicate that much time to something like that unless I'm being compensated for it. I'm not trying to sound like a dick, it's just the way things have to be right now.

Maybe someday if/when I ever "go pro" I'll be able to do things like this for fun, but right now my art is what pays my bills and I barely have enough time to do all of the paying jobs I have right now.

The Batman thread was the one that got me hooked on your art, Id love to see your rendition of the Joker for the next Batman Begins

Thanks. I was pretty proud of my "The Batman artwork" thread. It was really the first thread I had ever created on these boards, and it was at a time when I had A LOT of free time to do things like that for fun. It's funny because I actually got A LOT of freelance work from people that had seen that thread (I posted it here, LOG, and He-Man.org). Sad to say that thread appears to be officially dead now because it's nowhere on these boards anymore...oh well, I was pretty happy that it got suge a huge response (almost 100,000 hits).

Moving on, here is some more artwork....

Sketches I did based on one of my favorite games/characters; Rau from "Mark of Kri". This was done about 2 1/2 years ago (when the game came out) with blue pencil and sharpie.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Sketchbook/markofkri.jpg

Sketch I did of Tom Welling from "Smallville". This was done about 2-3 years ago with blue pencil. I think I went a little too heavy around his eyes because it looks like he's wearing eyeshadow...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Sketchbook/Smallville01.jpg

Another game inspired sketch I did. This is from "Prince of Persia Warrior Within". I loved the cover art so much I wanted to sketch it out. This was done ALL with a bic pen and a sharpie marker (as is evident by the mistakes).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Sketchbook/POP01.jpg

Creature designs I did from a script that Sandy Collora gave me entitled "Hunter Prey". These were the aliens from the script. Done all in blue pencil in about 20min...

Do you usually just use a bic marker pen and a sharpie for your work? Or do you pencil it out first?

0neDisturbedSOB
07-14-2005, 04:21 PM
But would a signed issue of Fantastic FOur 30th Anniversary do?

Sorry man but unfortunately the phone company doesn't accept that as a payment method. I would do it yourself like "Spork" said, it'll improve your own skills.

I told my girlfriend last night that in no more than 3 years I want to be able to turn in portfolios to people/companies at the SDCC in the hopes of getting some professional work. Right now I just don't think "I'm there" and I don't want to turn anything in unless I feel 100% positive it's my best work.

Most of the time I do sketches I use a basic black bic pen and sharpie marker. If I'm going to do an actual "drawing" that I might want to frame, or give to someone I'll use blue pencil, but then again I've been known to use pen on those too.....I don't know why pen just rolls smoother for me.

More updates....

My first official "photo manips" of the new Superman costume. The first one is the way I would've done it, just some SLIGHT adjustments in size and color. The second one is a nod to the 1930's Fleischer look. I did these right when the picture of the suit was released and they took about 1hr or so each. Not bad for a first timer eh?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Superman%20Returns/Supermanmanip02.jpg

Weird looking Joker pic I did. Not sure why he came out like this, but he did. I was trying to do an almost characature of the Joker but I didn't quite get it. This was done in about 30min with pen, sharpie and letraset markers.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Sketchbook/Joker-charicature.jpg

This is a Harley pic I did awhile back as a freelance job for some girl that wanted it as a tattoo. She wanted the pose from the "HUSH" toy line, but she wanted the mallet changed into an axe. This sketch was done VERY quickly, something like 10min while I was talking to her over the phone. The bottom is how it turned out once I cleaned it up in Illustrator, which took around 2hrs.

Some old stuff....

These ARE NOT original pieces. The Ghost Rider was the last page to a mini comic I got a few years back, the Resident Evil was the cover to a PSM I got in '97 and the Superman was a page from a McGuinness book a few years back. I loved all of these pictures and at the time I wondered "could I do that?" so I tried...

Done in '97 with a #2 pencil on copy paper in my science class. In all it took about 3 weeks (done ONLY in science class) I served many hours of detention for this one.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Drawings/Resident_Evil_2.jpg

Done in 2001 with a mechanical pencil on some bristol board. Took about 2hrs to complete.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Drawings/Ghost_Rider01.jpg

I believe this was done in 2001-2002 with a mechanical pencil on bristol board. Took around 3hrs to complete.

A lot of people do it that way. I've heard people like Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Adam Hughes...etc say that they would draw panels from their favorite artist's books as a way to teach themselves certain things. I do enough of my own stuff to be ok with seeing a drawing and thinking "I wonder if I could do that?"

Time for an update...

I posted this in the DC redesign thread last week,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Ninja-Batman-full-body.jpg

and now it's time for me to do the next logical character....THE JOKER.

Here's the original sketch I did, so now I'm going to color it in Illustrator. Thought I'd do a step by step deal since a lot of people are asking how to do vector based artwork.

Sketch:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/NinjaJokerb_w.jpg

And now for a little touch of Illustrator. I'm going to time myself to see how fast I can actually do this. I'm starting on Monday 8/1/05 at 9:15am

0neDisturbedSOB
08-01-2005, 02:44 PM
Finished the line art fairly quickly. It's now 9:35 and I'm ready to begin the coloring process.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Joker-01.jpg

First I turn all of the outlined areas that will be filled with a solid color, solid (in this case red) so I can distinguish lines from fills.

*I know he looks weird now, but you're looking at the early "wire frame" model...this will all make sense once I'm finished.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Joker-02.jpg

Now I start changing the red fills to the actual fill colors I intend to use. In this instance I am going to keep with the no black outline policy like I did on the Batman one, and make the highlights on his face a kind of "sickly green". This doesn't mean the final product will end up looking like this....just color as I go like I normally do.

Man, SOB, that is AWESOME work!! Would you mind doing a vector for this guy? This one right here (http://www.superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190711)

0neDisturbedSOB

Now that he's been colored all that's left is to create a "clipping mask" (CTRL + 7) to make the pupils to line up with the actual eyeballs, darken the green a bit so it's more visable, and add in the background.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Joker-05.jpg

For this background I just used Batman from my previous pic and converted him to all black. I did some QUICK line art to make the background trees/mountains...nothing spectacular. I also added in some odd design pattern to his jacket to help break up the overwhelming amount of black.

I wanted to make this Joker resemble a Kabuki so I ended up having to drop the green hair and purple clothing (although if you look closely you can see the purple lining inside his jacket). Gone are the red lips and acid squirting flowers (obviously since this is 1865). He now has a much more subtle look to him since this Joker would have to actually paint his face white before he went out.....no freak chemical accidents here.

Hey SOB, I've started using illustrator yet can't seem to find a fill tool. Any help?

Here is a screencapture from my screen in Illustrator.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/OneDisturbedSOB/Superman%20Returns/Picture0001.jpg

Notice how his "S" emblem is selected (blue outline on it) and the FILL has one shade of dark red while the STROKE has another? this means that the shape of his "S" is filled with the lighter shade, and is outlined with a darker shade.

FILL = FILLING AN OBJECT WITH A COLOR

STROKE = GIVING AN OBJECT AN OUTLINE

Cool, thanks. Another quick thing. While i'm using the pen tool, its a chunky line as opposed to your lines in the joker pic you did. Just wondering what I do to make the lines thinner and how to change the colour of the lines.

Nevermind bought that last question. I'm just trying to forge ahead on this great program. I just notcied how to do it. I just have to sit down and work out what all the features are.

0neDisturbedSOB
08-02-2005, 06:03 PM
You need to make sure the STROKE is selected which means that the stroke icon (pictured above) is INFRONT of the FILL icon (see how in my pic the fill icon overlaps the other icon? that means that it's selected).

As for shrinking the weight you need to reduce the stroke weight. Look to the right of the screen capture at the 5th tool area...see how it says "Stroke" and beneath it, it says "weight" with a 3....that means the weight of the line is a 3pt. All you need to do is make it 2 or 1 to make it thinner.

That's the wonderful thing about working with a vector-based drawing program. You can do pretty much anything you want to an image and it won't lose it's crispness. By the way, for the record, Coreldraw (my program of choice) works the same way. Grouping all the objects together will allow you to resize everything at once.

It appeared large because you were zoomed in on it. Follow these steps to enlarge it....

CTRL + A = Select all

Double click on the icon BENEATH the pencil icon, this is the SCALE TOOL.

Enter a percentage. To enlarge you must add 100 to whatever number you want to enlarge it by (if you want to enlarge it by 10% then you'd type 110%)

If you don't enlarge it enough you can always press CTRL + D which will duplicate your last action which in this case will be increasing it.

OR

You could just enlarge it by an accurate percentage. In your case I would try 200%

Hope this helps....

I think I MIGHT try Blade but I REALLY like his look from the first film....very basic, but very practical. I didn't like when they started giving him symbols and all that BS on his armor. To me Blade is a lot like the Punisher in the sense that he's out to do a job, not out to look "cool" and appealing to people....it just happens with his attitude.

I can kinda hear you on the symbols and stuff, but I see it as more warrior code. In his mind, his weapons mean everything to him, so he has to make them look their best. It's kinda that mentality, to me, at least.

But I LOVED the red shirt and inside the jacket that they did in Trinity.

0neDisturbedSOB
08-03-2005, 01:29 AM
I'm talking about his overall LOOK, not the design of his weapons. I'm all about making the weapons look cool because they basically mean life or death for him so why not make them the best both in use and design?

I wasn't a fan of his look in Trinity. I liked in the original film he just wore armor with no special stylized buckles or designs....basic black militaristic armor. To me, when you start making these characters too stylish they lose their sense of believability and become too "cartoony".

It's like in Batman Begins....the whole movie worked so well because of the practicality to it. The suit, the belt, the cowl, even the car was made completely realistic, like someone could actually put that stuff on and do that.

Just my feeling on the whole subject. IF I do Blade he will look NOTHING like he did in the last 2 films.

This might help..

CTRL + A = Select all (everything on the page)

CTRL + C = Copy

CTRL + V = Paste

CTRL + F = Paste in front

CTRL + B = Paste behind

CTRL + Z = Undo (undoes things you've done, I think you can undo 100x)

CTRL + SHIFT + Z = Redo (Same as above)

CTRL + J = Join (Joins 2 objects together)

CTRL + D = Duplicate (If you move something, you can select a new object and do a CTRL + D and it will move it to the exact same place as the last item you moved)

CTRL + 7 = Creates a clipping mask (read up on this)

CTRL + SHIFT + O = Outline (outlines text so you can manipulate it, but makes the wording un edititable)

CTRL + X = Cut

CTRL + K = Brings up your preferences menu. This allows you to adjust your settings in Illustrator

CTRL + Y = Wireframe. This allows you to view the technical construction of your artwork

CTRL + T = Brings up your text tool menu

That's all I can think of for now. I would HIGHLY suggest you learn these "quick keys" because it can cut your time in half.

Yeah I've already started learning them. I love this program so much more than Photoshop.I despise Photoshop, now. It's so limited... Illustrator just has so many options. So many abilities. So much control. And, even if you create a picture at 1 inch by 1 inch, you can stretch it to 100 inches by 100 inches and keep the same look. Smaller file sizes. I hate photoshop. I hate it so much!

0neDisturbedSOB
08-04-2005, 10:20 AM
I wouldn't say I HATE Photoshop, but I have definitely began to use it less and less. Aside from the fact that I'm WAY better versed in Illustrator, Photoshop feels a little too restricted to me at times. I still use it because it's faster to throw some color on a picture in PS than in AI, but when I want to sit down and do "serious coloring" I always turn to Illustrator.

I would like to get more into PS though, learn how to color better...etc. So again I pose the question WHERE IS THE PHOTOSHOP HELP THREAD??

me and my buddy do that on the side, vinyle stickers n magnets. do you have a cutter, or someone you know?

I have one. The only reason I started getting into this was because the guys in the kiosks at the mall are so over priced it's ridiculous. I went in there one time and asked the guy to cut me a Superman sticker for my car that was about 12" overall. He turned around and told me "That'll be $25". I looked at him like "You're out of your f**king mind if you think I'm paying $25 for a STICKER".

I started looking up how to do it online, and messing with the one at work and once I discovered how easy it was I invested into one of my own. I normally cut them for friends and family, and since I started I've built somewhat of a library, but I haven't ever really thought of selling them, and if I did I would DEFINITELY be WAY cheaper then those a**holes in the kiosks.

Since this sticker is "in color" and dual layered it takes a little while to make. Once the red area is cut, it has to be hand applied to the gold vinly, then hand trimmed in the diamond shape. Not including the actual cutting of the vinyl it takes around 15min to make one.

I would love to be able to sell custom made stickers since you can pretty much make a sticker out of ANYTHING, I'm just not sure where to market my "services". If anyone here is interested let me know, I've already got a ton of DC/Marvel logos cut, and I've already made about 14 of these Superman Returns decals. I'd probably have to charge at least $5 a pop for the Superman logos just to cover the cost of the vinyl.

Just thought I'd share.

I'm curious. How can you sell those Punisher and superman stickers without getting sued. Aren't they trademarked products? Isn't it illegal to male money of those?

0neDisturbedSOB
08-05-2005, 02:15 PM
It's the same as going to the mall and buying them. Marvel/DC isn't going to go after every single kid making stickers or magnets in their basement. If I were to mass produce these and market them, then they probably would.

as far as im concerned, its the same as fan art........if marvel wants to sue me or SOB over 5 bucks........ they need to get there stuff straight.

and its not like we are selling them for 100$ each. and if fan art was against the rules, this section of the boards would be gone.

I think it has more to do with not wanting to waste time going after small time people. I mean it's pretty clear how many MILLIONS of people duplicate these on a daily basis. Anyway, who cares?

Hey OneDisturbedSOB, hope you don't mind me posting these here, but no one checks out my thread and you gave me a helping hand so I wanted to show you what I came up with:

http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/2996/flashlogo6oz.jpg

I did this in half an hour. It was an idea for the logo for the flash movie that would appear on merchandise for the film.

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/2734/devils3eb.png

This is an idea I had for a Captain Spaulding window sticker.

0neDisturbedSOB

I like The Flash one a lot....reminds me of the marketing material used for the old TV show.

Not a big fan of the whole "House of 1,000 corpses" or "Devil's rejects" but the drawing you did came out nicely. The only thing is that it would have to be covnerted in order to be cut out on vinyl for a sticker.

I'm intrested

In the meantime here's a new decal I did for a friend. He wanted a decal of the new He-Man sword to put it on a display case in his store. The drawing itself didn't take that long, but the actual cutting of vinyl took FOREVER. I think the final result ended up measuring 30". I thought it came out pretty nice.

Hey SOB, I'm interested in a Doom sticker for the back of my truck. About how much do you think this would run me? My back window is tinted so black wouldn't look that great, can you use white or hopefully some type of metallic grey?

0neDisturbedSOB
08-08-2005, 11:35 PM
Depends on how detailed it is and what size it is.

Metallic gray huh? I have just the thing, it's a metallic silver vinyl that reacts different to light. Sometimes it looks metallic, sometimes it looks flat gray, and sometimes it looks white...it's cool.

It is a bit more expensive though, it's a lot thicker than normal vinyl.

Give me some details and we'll talk.

Dr Doom

Ok so as I work on an actual site for this, I will post my "price chart" that I came up with. This is based on a lot of research I did from custom vinyl places like kiosks and stores. Most of them start out in the $7.00 range for about a 4" decal, so naturally to garner interest I have to be cheaper. Here is what I came up with....

Starting at 4" (Vertical or Horizontal)

Basic vinyl - $5.00

Thicker "Metallic Vinyl" (reacts differently to sunlight) -$6.50

Each additional 1" increment costs $1.00, for the metallic vinly it's $1.50

Dual layered decals (like my colored Superman ones) $3.00 IN ADDITION TO NORMAL PRICING ABOVE (covers the price of using 2 layers of vinyl) - ONLY COMES IN BASIC VINYL

Custom decals (consists of anything I haven't already created)

Regular basic design (Such as the DKR Batman, logos...etc) - $5.00

Detailed designs (Such as group shots, intricate details..etc) - $7-$10.00 depending on the amount of detail/time.

Hope this makes sense. Any questions feel free to ask.
