View Full Version : Any ready-for-TV African-American actors who could portray Blade?

You all saw the news on the front page with David Goyer saying that Spike TV has ordered 13 episodes of Blade.

Now the question is... who in the hell could play the character at this point? It's gonna be tough to cast.

Clay Fontenat (sp?) He was Snipes stunt double in the movies.

Clay Fontenot, yeah. He has the look, but he doesn't appear to have any real acting experience. Being a stuntman alone isn't going to carry a TV series, you know? But it might at least make the moves look wicked. I dunno. Maybe he could do it.

It might have to be an unknown.

Hmmmm... perhaps Kadeem Hardison could do it? He did some physical stuff in 'Drive' and could probably act tough enough... I dunno.

How about J. August Richards? He played Gunn on Angel.

Hmmm, I could see that. He'd have a different build than we'd expect for the character, a little more lanky, but that's not a problem.

Yeah, if Blade were lighter in complection, half a foot taller and bald!

It can't just be any black actor who's played a badass. Plus, I doubt J. August Richards wants to play another vampire hunter after doing it for five years.

I do believe whoever they pick should have a serious martial arts background. Michael Jai White could have easily played Blade on film, and have never been that big of a movie star that he'd be too busy to do series television.

I can only assume the series will feature a younger Blade, still learning of ins and outs of hunting vampires.

I still think an animated series would have made more sense.

Michael Jai White!! Yes you are right, he would do an awesome job on the TV show.

Goyer said it's going to be "different" than the films. While this could definitely go along with a younger Blade, I think it'd be better to take place after "Trinity" (which seemed like a big ol' TV pilot, in a sense, with the ending). I think it'd be Blade hunting other things than just vamps, since I think, while it's fine on film, we've already seen this character doing it three times... audiences at home would probably want something more than just the same than they've been exposed to in the films.

Personally, I just hope the show gets respect in the development process to make it worth bothering with, not something that gets cancelled because it's stupid. Whether he's fighting just vamps in a younger version, or fighting other things set after the films (this would give them a reason to not write in Whistler though) I'll watch it, as long as it's good.

But I am curious to see what'll happen since Snipes, as we've been told, is apparently still interested in doing a 4th, so... whatever... have to wait and see...

Interested? I doubt that since he is sueing Goyer for 5 million big ones.

If only Nick Cannon wasn't the most annoying, obnoxious, jackass I'd ever seen I would suggest him.

Because physically, and based on cumulative star power he's exactly what you need.

How about not someone who's already famous for playing a Vampire Hunter fighting to avenge their dead mother (or in the case of J./Gunn, their neighborhood/dead sister).

Except D.B., now I think about it, with some fake wig piece, would look a lot like Blade.

Not really.

His face is much rounder

His face is in some ways feminine, yet also more goofy looking than Wesley

The only real hard reminiscence is the stylized facial hair, and obviously being black. The former of which any black guy with the ability to grow facial hair can adapt.

I'm 90 perecent sure the show is about a Young Blade, how he got started. DB is no spring chicken.

It wouldn't matter if he was a 20 year old Wesley Snipes clone with the resume DB has. He's still a guy who's only fame, virtually, has come from playing a Vampire Hunter.

True. But he also had a role on 24. And I just thought he'd be good for the role. Sorry.

How about TJ Storm (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0832622/)?

He was the African pirate/swordsman from the Conan TV series. He's definitely got the martial arts part of the role covered.

Very cool suggestion! A pretty out-there one, but I'm very pleased with it. It's my favorite idea so far.

Kevin Grevioux might work too. :)

It's supposed to be about YOUNG Blade no?

Generally people don't go through a period in their late teens or early 20's where they're the size of Hulk Hogan and then shrink down to Wesley Snipes size when they're 40.

the blade comics has been horrible. the movie surpasses the comics. This is the rare case where the movie is better than the comics. Wes is blade. he is the one actor who is the character, when i think of blade i think of wesley snipes.

Maybe you do, but I love the Blade comics, have since I was 8, since I am now 21, I am a huge Blade fan, Snipes did a good job don't get me wrong, but I believe the tv show doesn't have to be like the movie.

TheCorpulent1

The character's been changed in the comics to reflect the movies, though, so even if he looked more like "the comic Blade," he'd look like Wesley Snipes' movie version. Personally, I'm fine with that. I'd take the movie version over the comic version with goggles and a brown coat.

I'm still waiting for a good creative time to come along and do a comic based on the movie Blade that's actually good. I remember the one that MAX put out after Blade 2 came out, and it made no sense whatsoever. Blade looked nothing like the movie character(which I though was gonna be the case as preview sketches showed him in movie attire) until the sixth issue, but by then the book had been axed. I bet Steve Skroce and Christopher Priest could do Blade proper!

No thanks, I'd prefer it if Blade could actually act. :p

I'd like to see a good comics interpretation of the movie Blade. You'd think it's a no-brainer, considering the formula for movie Blade is very, very simple, but somehow it's just been impossible to translate into comics. Judging from some of the concepts for the post-movie Blade series I've seen, it doesn't even seem like they're trying. Priest would probably be awesome on it, though.

Or howbout the guy I suggested a few posts up. He's the only person other than Snipes to ever play Blade. He's not bad either hah, and hes young. I'm sure they'd get him in top shape if he was picked.

Yeah, he did Spawn and Universal Soldier: The Return and POOF. The only other thing I've seen him doing is a role for the new Spawn cartoon.

maybe Lee Thompson Young, AKA Jett Jackson. He's got a new show coming out on the WB or UPN or something, a drama about teens in Miami or something. Not sure how long it will last. Probably not very.

Here's a new topic for discussion, who could play a younger Whistler ?

http://www.recordsale.de/cdpix/k/kris_kristofferson-the_silver_tongued_devil_and_i.jpg

He really looks like Kurt Russell in alot of these pics, but we all know that Kurt is too big a star for a Spike tv show.

I really want to see the guy that they cast as Blade maintain the same level of martial arts grace that Wesley Snipes brought to the character.

I'm pulling for TJ.

Funny thing is I found this post by looking for my personal friend Clay Fontenot to see if he had done any stunt work on Blade the series. Shortly after blade 2 he was telling me about a possible Blade series and that there was talk of him playing Blade. I can tell you he most certainly could have played the part and for the record he is definitely the real thing as far as the martial arts are concerned..so is Wes for that matter. Anywho, I assume he didnt get the part. Hollywood is not exactly known for its good judgement. There are incredible actors who will never get a shot meanwhile we have to suffer through Ben Affleck.
