Does that mean they have to put other actors on boxes when they stand next to you?

Yeah, particularly as Wolverine because if you notice in the film he's never taller then anyone, except for Anna Paquin's character, and I'm taller then all of them. Poor Jimmy Marsden who plays Cyclops, I mean he's not short, he's like 5ft10in, but at one point he had inch lifts on his shoes. It was like something from The Rocky Horror Show. We watched the dailies one night and you could actually see his waist and the belt on his pants. Because we're both standing next to each other he looks kind of deformed.

Didn't your wife actively try to dissuade you from taking the part in X-men because she thought it sounded a bit naff?

She read the script pages and said "You can't do this, you've got claws and you're a mutant." When you get sent just three pages of the script it can seem a bit odd. I was working at the National Theatre at the time and it seemed a little strange, but I went off and auditioned and I didn't get it, Dougray Scott was cast. Then they said "Why don't you audition for Cyclops?" I said I didn't want to wear sunglasses for five months! When it became increasingly likely that Dougray was never going to get out of M:I2 I flew up to Toronto to audition again. I had to go and do a full screen test which is on the X-men DVD. Within six days of arriving in LA, I was in Toronto about to start my first film.

Which turned you from a virtual unknown into a global name overnight. Were you prepared for all that stuff that comes with it, such as paparazzi hanging round your house?

I don't think it had hit me how big it was, because even though it was a big film, I didn't have time to work out what it could do for my career, plus those three months after I came back from filming, people weren't "Oh my God, you're in X-men." Then I was in New York about to start filming Someone Like You and there were about eight paparazzi outside my trailer. So from that point it literally did change my life.

What does it take to get Hugh Jackman into Wolverine's physique?

Unfortunately, a lot of training. I've got to have things like this [points to the egg-white omelette he's eating] which don't look that appetizing and I can't have carbohydrates. The beauty of nutrition is that you don't have to train as hard if you eat properly. There's a place here called CNM which is the centre of Nutritional Medicine which took on the English Rugby Team about two years ago and now they're like the fittest and strongest team in the world. I was put onto them and they're amazing. My Goal is to get to 94 kilograms which is about 210 pounds. Now I'm about 91, because I've been building up, but normally I'm about 88. But percentage body fat is the key. I was never in the shape I wanted to be in the first film because I got cast a week into filming. I wanted to be like 8 or 9 percent body fat and I'm now probably 13. It doesn't sound like much, but that little extra is very hard to get rid of. So it's sobriety for me, my friend, and egg-white omelettes.

Oh sorry, should have explained. Because it's the Kid's Choice Awards, naturally they do a lot of stuff that kids like to do. One of the big highlights is one of the celebrities gets "slimed" with green goo and they don't know about it. In 2004 when Hugh won the burping contest, Mary Kate and Ashley Olson were presenting an award and all of a sudden the ceiling opened and all this green slime came down and covered them. No one knows who gets slimed at this award show but it always happens and of course the kids eat it up.

I am not the MTV generation so I had to look up what it was! Wonder if it will air to coincide with X-3 promotion. There were news reports that Hugh got hit with a pie at the Kid's Choice Awards this weekend which did not happen on air so I thought the press made a mistake. But now I'm wondering if that did happen to air on MTV.

She mentioned it comes out May 26 and most of the conversation was about the makeup and how it took 7 hours to put it on and how much time it took to take it off. Regis asked her how many times she had to do this in this movie and she said "about 15 or 20 times" so I'm guessing that was her filming schedule - 15 or 20 days.

Your parents were hippies. What did they think of your becoming a model? I left U.C. Santa Cruz to go to Paris. At school, people were partying, wasting time. I learned more the first five days I was in Paris than I did in a year at Santa Cruz.

What can you tell me about the new X-Men movie? I'm covered in blue paint again. And I suffer a heartbreak.

Are you wedding planning with your fiancé, actor Jerry O'Connell? There's no planning going on, but it's definitely gonna be this year, something small and private.

Don't you live in an old brothel? Yes. It's called Wagon Wheel Ranch. Jerry and I took a trip to Napa last year. When we got back, he put in 800 grapevines. Within a couple years, we'll start producing our own Cabernet, Wagon Wheel Wine. Our website will be www.www.com

Aussie actor Hugh Jackman has spent more time in Vancouver than most big name stars, and he's back in town yet again.

Jackman was spotted chowing down at Gotham Steakhouse on Seymour a few days ago and was also spied strolling on Robson.

After recently wrapping production on the third X-Men movie, word is he's back to discuss his next big movie called Wolverine, which is a spin-off of his X-Men character.

Some cast and crew of X-3 have also been back in town lately for some last minute re-shoots before the movie is released.

My wife is a big fan, and she said, "Wow, you are interviewing the blue-skinned woman?" Do you get that reaction a lot?
(Laughs.) Last week the Idols were shooting on the Fox lot, including Chris Daughtry, who I love. He is my favorite one on there. Apparently he is a huge 'X-Men' fan and he wanted to meet Mystique. So they brought him over to the hair and makeup trailer where I was getting ready. I was sitting there with no makeup and wet hair. He said "Hi" and I said, "Is this living up to the fantasy?"

It probably did.
(Laughs.) I'm sure it did not. I said, "I'm sorry I don't have the blue skin."

Hollywood has pegged the Scottish actor Alan Cumming as a stock villain and a mutant for hire, but New Yorkers know him as an impish man-about-town and a Broadway darling whose last big role, as the emcee in Cabaret, brought the show to new levels of tawdriness. He returns to Studio 54 this week as Mac the Knife, the slinky inveterate criminal at the center of The Threepenny Opera. Cumming talked to Boris Kachka about his new role and life after 40 (which looks a lot like life before 40).

You’re known for revealing your backside in almost all the theatrical productions you’ve been in. I admit I was disappointed not to see it this time.
Someone once wrote, “Is it some sort of contractual thing that he has to show his bum in everything he does?” But no, I mean, there wasn’t really any place for it. And also those trousers are so tight, you’ve got a pretty good idea of everything downstairs anyway.

What was Mac’s appeal for you, then?
It’s one of the great modern European theater roles—and also, you’ve got to make people want to **** you even though you’re a horrible rapist and murderer. So it’s got all those challenges.

Yet you’re playing another dark character from the Weimar era. How is it different?
Cabaret was more cheeky. The phrase I think of when I do Cabaret is, “You know you want to.” This is more like, “You want to, or I’ll ****ing beat your head in.”

You said that when you turned 40, you might slow down your partying a bit. You’re 41 now.
I hope I’m still going to clubs when I’m 65.

Where do you go?
I’ve been loving the lesbian nights at Starlight. Lesbians are so gorgeous nowadays. Maybe it’s just me, maybe I’ve just noticed them. And the Russian Baths. On the days he would be on wires, they would change things at the last second that required him to be hanging from wires for a long time. It doesn't seem like actual shooting was a pleasant thing at all.

Hollywood star Halle Berry asked British DJ Chris Moyles whether he was having a “racist moment” on his radio show today.

The Oscar-winning actress made the comment while on BBC Radio 1’s breakfast show to promote the latest X-Men blockbuster.

The pair were discussing acting along with her co-star Hugh Jackman when Moyles adopted an American accent and challenged his guests to “put your hands up in the air” because he had a gun.

Jackman suggested he was being a “Brooklyn Bond”, at which point Moyles replied: “I’m a black, American guy.”

Berry, 39, then interjected: “Are we having a racist moment here?”

Moyles insisted the comment had not been intended as racist, and the interview continued.

A BBC spokesman said: “There was nothing racist. She carried on chatting for another five to 10 minutes after the comment.”

On the London leg of the X-Men: The Last Stand press tour today, the unfeasibly lovely pair that are Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry dropped a few tidbits about the chance of further instalments from our favourite X-gened mutants - notably the news that Wolverine is currently planned as a prequel.

First of all, Jackman talked about the proposed Wolverine spin-off film…

“I can tell you that David Benioff had written two drafts. He’s a fantastic writer and a huge, passionate fan. I know that fans of Wolverine or X-men will be excited about the direction it’s going. It’s a prequel, at present, but we’re not finished writing so it’s not finalised – and even if it was, I wouldn’t tell you!”

But is he up for a fourth X-film proper?

“I think that the studio always planned this to be the end. It’s definitely the biggest in every way and it feels like a fitting end to the trilogy. There may be more, but I think everyone involved…everyone came back, and none of the actors came back thinking that they were gratuitously making a buck and the studio were just trotting these things out. I feel like the script we had at the beginning of this was the best of the three, and that’s why everyone signed on. So another one wouldn’t happen unless there was a genuine feeling that we had another story to tell that was evolving the story. I think we’re all proud of what we’ve created, so if there is another one, it won’t be a cash-in or a Gloria Swanson moment of ‘I’ve got to get back in the game’.”

Halle Berry, in contrast, is all in favour of an X-Men 4. “There’s no chance of a Storm spin-off, not with me anyway! Hugh and I differ on this. I think there could be another X-Men movie. The fans want it and love it, and the series is so rich with so many stories and characters, it could go on and on almost like a Bond movie. But if not, I feel confident that Hugh’s movie will go, no matter what, and I’ll maybe get to do a fly-by!”
