Set 7625

Set 7626
"Jungle Cutter"

Looking forward to seeing these sequences. :woot:

The cutter tank is in the film. We've had set pictures of it, and it's included in an action sequence that I've heard described as something like the tank chase in LAST CRUSADE.

Is it the "River Chase" that is supposedly in the league of the chase from Raiders ?

You have no idea what you're talking about. Painting is painting. No one medium is always faster than all the others. The ease and speed of painting is based on someone's comfort with the medium, not the medium itself.

USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2007-12-09-indiana-jones_N.htm)

I've put new bits in bold.

First look: Whip cracks over new 'Indiana Jones' movie
By Anthony Breznican

Now that the poster for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has been revealed, some details from the super-secret plot also can be officially exposed.

Indiana Jones co-producer Frank Marshall is authorized to confirm some rumors and detail some of the story, about a quest for South American relics with supernatural powers.

When last we saw Indy, he was riding off into the sunset in 1989's The Last Crusade, set in 1938 near the start of World War II. The new movie, due this spring, is set at the height of the Cold War in 1957, so the character has aged in real time — 19 years.

"He's teaching and having kind of a quiet life," the producer says. Once the archaeologist is thrust back into danger, the signature Indiana Jones red line tracing across the map will take him to New Mexico, Connecticut, Mexico City and the jungles of Peru.

Despite all the gray-hair jokes (Harrison Ford is 65), Indy is still swinging from dangerous precipices and absorbing punches.

"Indy's a fallible character. He makes mistakes and gets hurt. He has a few more aches and pains now," Marshall says. "That's the other thing people like: He's a real character, not a character with superpowers."

The Nazis are no longer Indy's chief foe — he's racing for the Crystal Skull against operatives from the Soviet Union, including Oscar winner Cate Blanchett as the seductive Agent Spalko. "Indy always has a love-hate relationship with every woman he ever comes in contact with," Marshall says.

Ray Winstone, currently the star of Beowulf, co-stars as an unethical rival archaeologist. Transformers star Shia LaBeouf sports greaser hair and rides a motorcycle as the hero's sidekick.

The Last Crusade concluded without a cliffhanger, but Crystal Skull will revisit bits from other films, including Karen Allen's feisty Marion Ravenwood from 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The artifact of the title is inspired by real quartz sculptures of disputed origins that are carved in a way that defies the natural structure of the crystal.

"The theory is they are shaped by higher powers or alien powers or came from another world, or an ancient Mayan civilization had the powers," Marshall says.

I did not highlight what Marshall says about the source of the skulls, as those are speculations in the real world, not in the movie.

I'm intrested to see how Indy will fare in the post-Lord of the Rings, post-Spider-Man, post-Matrix, pro-character development, pro-story arc times.

Spielberg's last family blockbuster was the grim, forboding War of the Worlds. He hasn't made a bright, upbeat adventure blockbuster since Jurassic Park.

SolidSnakeMGS
12-13-2007, 10:57 AM
Well, people know Indy, and they know Spielberg and Lucas and that they're behind it. The people who grew up with Indy, the 30 something year olds, now probably have a family and will take them all to see it. I think in this time when so much of movies is fake (aka CGI), people want to see a good b-movie throwback adventure movie that relies on traditional methods of storytelling. Ironic though that the king of CGI obsession is behind this.

Once the promos start up, it'll gain some mad momentum. Probably approach Star Wars level.

Mr. Socko
12-13-2007, 11:58 AM
Completely agree. I'm excited not just because it's Indiana Jones, but because we're finally getting a blockbuster made old school style. When is the last time we have seen a Summer adventure film that didn't contain mostly CGI? Obi-Wan and Anakin flipping across lava, Voldemort casting fiery dragon spells, Superman stopping planes, Spider-Man webbing throughout New York, all of that is cool but it's time to get back to basics. This approach is the best way to go. At least, we'll get one final Indiana Jones film in the B-movie throwback style, at most, others film may utilize this approach instead of doing everything the CG way.

Does anyone have a figure to the budget? I don't imagine it being over $100 Million, but who knows.

Shifty
12-13-2007, 01:08 PM
The adjusted North American gross for
Raiders: $579,973,400
Temple: $352,245,900
Crusade: $325,160,500

Add about 25 years worth of new fan base, its going to have a huge opening day and weekend from the those born 1980s on, then the older moviegoers will keep its legs strong for the summer.

Looking back at summer adventure movies that didn't use CGI

The Mask of Zorro - 1998 I don't remember any, was there?

Not necessarily, My 10 yr old Nephew has loved the first 3 since he was about 6, from video, DVD, and such. My son, who is 4 watches them with me and likes them. If they have been exposed to it, there will be younger fans. I would take my son to this before The Dark Knight, even though he LOVES Batman, but that will be such a dark movie.

kids love indy cuz of exposure on DVD... them saying indy wont do business because theyre old flciks and kids are young is like saying the star wars prequels wouldnt do business, because the originals are old.

That's why they have Shia.
My younger brother is 13 and he was introduced to Indy and Original Star Wars at an early age, so I have faith a lot of young people will go. If it has the merchandising blitz, their parents talking about it then they'll go see it. And if not, that just means there won't be little kids screaming in the theatre.

The under-12s aren't the core market for Indiana Jones to begin with. This one's gonna have broad appeal.

I think we're looking at least $200 million domestic and about $400 million foreign. That'd be quite respectable, and if the movie's darn good, I can see it doing much better than that.

I've always really thought that Last Crusade was the best. I just think people like Raiders the most because it was first.

No, people like Raiders because it had the best blend of adventure and quiet moments, had memorable characters and villains, the best locations, and of course, the best and most original action sequences.

If people liked first movies because of them being first, Empire Strikes Back, Godfather II, X-Men 2, and many other movies wouldn't be rated higher than the movies that came before them.

Temple is definitely second. Its balance is a bit off (it has one HUGE action sequence at the end) and some of the action sequences themselves aren't that original (car chase, rafting overing the ground) but its still highly enjoyable and very dark.

Last Crusade I think hasn't aged as well. Its comedy is off at times and some of the action seems to be a rehash of better sequences. But it is still enjoyable and a good Indy movie.

Why didnt Lucas's promise for before Christmas get realized? - which is why I asked the question if that rumour exists that a trailer did exist but was sucky so Spielberg didnt release it.

John Hurt Talks Indiana Jones
Source: Premiere (http://www.premiere.com/features/4335/q-a-exclusive-john-hurt-on-indiana-jones-and-the-kingdom-of-the-crystal-skull.html)
December 21, 2007

Premiere (http://www.premiere.com/features/4335/q-a-exclusive-john-hurt-on-indiana-jones-and-the-kingdom-of-the-crystal-skull.html) has posted a new interview with John Hurt, who is believed to be playing the father of Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood (he just grinned in the interview when asked) in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=4665), opening May 22. Here's a clip:

They shot as much as they possibly could, but they had some massive blue screens. There will be CGI, but it's based on a lot of the stuff that we shot, so it's not pure CGI. It's overlayed and so on. Steven does shoot as much as he possibly can and that's impressive. I mean we shot on five major Hollywood studios. We shot at Downey, Sony, Paramount, Warners, and Universal, either in their studios or the outside lots. We'd do two days here, then trot off and do a week there and then back to this one, while the other sets were being prepared. And the sets were fantastic, full of moving parts and things that all worked. You suddenly realized that you're almost a puppet. You come on and do your bit, and then you're off to the next one.

You can read the full interview here (http://www.premiere.com/features/4335/q-a-exclusive-john-hurt-on-indiana-jones-and-the-kingdom-of-the-crystal-skull.html)!

John Hurt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hurt) in a still-unrevealed role.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Jones_and_the_Kingdom_of_the_Crystal_Skull #_note-hurt) The actor would not confirm or deny if he was playing Abner Ravenwood, Marion's father, who was said to be dead in Raiders of the Lost Ark.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Jones_and_the_Kingdom_of_the_Crystal_Skull #_note-peru) Hurt had been suggested by Frank Darabont (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Darabont) when he was writing the screenplay.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Jones_and_the_Kingdom_of_the_Crystal_Skull #_note-3) Hurt wanted to read the script before signing on, unlike other cast members who came on "because Steven — you know, 'God' — was doing it. And I said, 'Well, I need to have a little bit of previous knowledge even if God is doing it.' So they sent a courier over with the script from Los Angeles, gave it to me at three o'clock in the afternoon in London, collected it again at eight o'clock in the evening, and he returned the next day to Los Angeles." Hurt only appears in the film's second half.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Jones_and_the_Kingdom_of_the_Crystal_Skull #_note-peru)

Does anyone know when the trailer is actually going to be released. There hasn't been talk in over a month and I have no idea if it comes out on Christmas, or during the Superbowl or at all? I'm getting doubtful about this film because of the lack of news.

Take it easy. They could announce this movie the day before it opens and it'll still make money. This is one of the top franchises in movie history. They dont need to do fancy marketing and viral BS to put butts in seats. The posters in thearters are getting the job done for now. When that trailer shows and the John Williams score comes on...May cant get here fast enough

Ive watched the first 3 this week and I'd say Raiders is still the best, it holds up as well as ever and pacing wise is perfect. it also judges the humour the best of the 3 and has the best action sequence of the 3.

Temple for me is second, Shorty is a good sidekick character who fits well into the mix and Willie is a nice contrast to Marion, despite her screaming i find her fun, the humour is well judged for the most part and the story and tone engaging, the action is not as organic and more stagey than Raiders and some of the fighting during the escape from the Temple looks weak, but Spielberg pulls it around with the exhilarating mine cart chase and the climactic bridge sequence, perhaps the best moment in the series' for my money.

Last Crusade is easily the most humour driven of the 3 and the scenes between Ford and Connery are a joy to behold, but playing goofy to his father at times takes Indy's edge away and the humour slips into the farcical on a few occasions, it even pierces the action at times. The set pieces are largely superb with the boat chase being the best purely structured one, the Tank sequence is spectacular but has quite a few silly bits dotted in it, much like the cool bike chase earlier in the movie, also they push to places CGI wasn't ready for with the plane sequence.
All in all still lots of fun and a good entry to the franchise.

Can't wait for the 4th. :yay:

I can't wait. I have all 3 on VHS, and my Raiders tape is starting to show major signs of aging.

What are you guys favorite action sequences from the films?

Mine are:

1) Indy being dragged by the truck in Raiders.
2)The battle for the antidote in Lao Che resturant in TOD.
3)The Tank battle in TLC
4)The bridge sequence at the end of TOD.
5)Young Indy's first adventure on the train in TLC.

1) Truck chase in Raiders. Easily my fav action sequence in movie history!

2) Booby traps and boulder chase in Raiders.

3) Airplane fight in Raiders.

4) Temple escape and fight in TOD with the exception of the water.

5) Marion's bar fight scene in Raiders.

6) Basket chase scene in Raiders.

7) Antidote and club ObiWan escape in TOD.

8) Tank rescue in Last Crusade.

9) Bridge Scene and Mola Ram fight in TOD.

10) Venice boat chase in Crusade.

I agree that Last Crusade, while good, was alot lighter on the action. Everything was a little goofy, and I am sure they did that since they felt TOD was too dark. However, I think the movie suffers for it. The tank rescue was fun, but thats pretty much the only action sequence I was impressed with in Last Crusade. But I did love the interaction between Ford and Connery, which is what made the movie.

I just hope they dont try and replicate that in Indy 4 with Ford and LaBaoef....IMO a recipe for disaster because its been done and wont beat Connery and Ford together. Here's hoping for something new for Indy 4!!

On the other hand, I personally feel Indy 4 should have been just about Indy and Marion reconnecting and nothing else. No side kicks, no son. Just Indy...like in Raiders. The side kick and family thing has been done before, so here's hoping Lucas and Spielberg are not making a movie "for their sons". Felt like Spielberg was trying to analyze his relationship with his own father in LC, and now it may be about him as a father and "his son" in this day and age. IMO...ugh. Hope this isnt the case, cuz I dont think the movie will go over well. Just my 2 cents.

I agree. I love the fun associated with the action scene at the beginning with Young Indy discovering his destiny;being chased across the train; getting his scar, discovering the bullwhip and his fear of snakes and lat but definately not least, the significance of The Fedora hat. I think it all played out nicely. But yeah, i think it was lighter because of TOD, not to mention Marcus Brody being out in the field with them.

Accept is ALL i'm willing to do.

In a perfect world, 3 should have been the last. It was the perfect end to an awesome trilogy. The title of TLC gave nice closure to the Indy saga. I really love Indy, but i really think making a fourth is gonna shatter this franchise. No matter how good it is, there are gonna be ppl who say it sucks simple because of Fords age, the time that has past between this one and the Last Crusade, Shia and god knows what else.

They tried to extend this franchise once before with The Young Indiana Chronicles, and that imo was a disaster. How one man could come across EVERY historical figure during his time era, is beyond me, and unrealistic.

4 is walking on the wire. 5 is definately gonna be suicide.

Definitely. it's not Indy without Ford. And with the number of american pies out there, I think it's ok to get one more movie from one the last great living directors of all time... just my tiny insignificant opinion on the matter.

Anyway i had a dream about the first Crystal Skull trailer and it was ****ing brilliant. You know that African jungle beat stuff? Well the music was a mix of that and church choir music and a taste of opera... just a constant tempo and shots of Vast jungles, elaborate caves, shia acting like a badass sprucing up his hair, and then being beaten by some goons and falling (may be what i'm hoping for?). Then of course there was indy, we don't see his face, just him chopping through the jungle. The funny thing is that it's very dramatic and stuff. I saw Indy dying, contemplating sacrificing himself etc... it was sad.

weird dream, but if the movie's anything like that, meaning completely ape **** unexpected crazyness like Temple of Doom, it'll be worthy of the franchise.

I hope the movie rocks guys, but has ANY so called 'retire franchises', come back sucessfully?

Die Hard?

Rocky?

Rambo?

All three of these franchise should have stayed where they were;retired. Hell Rocky 4 is the only movie, that was the fourth in a franchise, that i actually enjoyed more than the previous entries; but then they go and **** it up with Rocky 5. I understand why Stallone wanted to come back and relive his glory days blah, blah, blah with 'Rocky Balboa'. I guess he somehow wanted to redeem the disaster that was Rocky 5, but Indy ended on a high note. The franchise doesn't need redeeming. The only reason i see this movie being made now, is because Speilburg, Lucas and Ford want their own 'Last Crusade', and want to relive their glory days. Hell, Lucas did just that with the Star Wars PT, and we saw how that turned out. :csad:

Yeah, the only Young Indy I ever watched was the one where Harrison Ford cameoed in it as an older Indy.

And to be really honest, I had taped it as I couldnt watch it live so I fast forwarded the entire Young Indy part as Ford was only in in at the beginning and at the end.

AND...I still havent unwrapped that Young Indy VHS episode tape they gave away when I bought the Indy collection on VHS some yrs ago.
