okay, but when they get to the bit in the films where they usually have him reading an old musty book or ancient parchment with a crude but slightly chilling drawing of the item's power, Indiana Jones is going to have to read a pamphlet published the year before by an aging hippy in a tie-dye shirt.
First of all its the 50s pretty sure there are no hippies.
Second, there has to be at least one credible(some type of degree/doctorate) scientist/anthropologist who believes in the subject. The idea started somewhere and it wouldnt gain so much clout without some type of credibility.
Third, some type of parchment can be reinterrupted as alien life. The kind of civilizations that have been rumored to have the alien connection (Mayans,Egyptians, etc.) had drawings that were even more crude and had heavier symbolism than any drawing that we have seen in an Indy flick
I hate to use a Smallville reference, but the cave drawings that were interpreted as a Kryptonian involved a being shooting fire, having strength of 10 men (shown by a pyramid of people) and shown falling from the sky as if it was an angelic being. Now, with a rise in popularity of science fiction and a curiosity of space/cosmos a new interpretation can be presented.

The idea doesn't actually have as much clout as you might want to think. Its a potentially really interesting concept (which is why it catches so much attention, especially on popular television), but few serious anthropologists believe it (i'm sure some do, the same as some serious self-proclaimed scientists are still convinced the earth is 10,000 years old despite all evidence to the contrary). I'd have to do more reading on the origin of the idea though to confirm this, but it sounds like one of those ideas that originates with science-fiction writers and is so entertaining and convenient that people prefer to believe it rather than the more plausible explanations.

Thats true they have some interesting imagery, but i'll be interested to see if they misrepresent it in the film. The HUMAN characters (princes and kings usually) on Mayan historical records look alien enough as it is (particularly the villains).
With what little we know about deciphering the few records we have, I've never seen anybody seriously suggest: this is a drawing of an alien.
If you really put your mind to it you can get any reading you want out of a parchment (especially if you examine it on its own, out of the context of the rest of the documents available), so I'm sure they'll have something interesting for the film.
You could always make an argument that the Gods depicted in the parchments etc were actually aliens, which I'm guessing is how they'll do it in this film.
Its just not a theory thats taken very seriously, which is why it'll be great to see Indy rolling his eyes throughout the movie.

Clout was the wrong word to use. Imeant popularity/interest.Obiously a number of people know the concept on this board, and like you said it is common in fiction.

I totally agree with you. In fact im probably "agnostic" about the whole concept. The case Im trying to make is its appropriateness for an Indy film and nothing else.

I think what you said about reinterpreting the content of parchments as a suggestion of alien interference (of which the most obvious instance would be the role of gods in Mayan mythology), convinced me that it could work in an Indiana Jones film.
Definately was skeptical when I heard 'aliens', and became really worried when i heard '50s B-movie', but if the main drive of the film is the archaeology and a mysterious artefact of unknown origin, and not conspiracy theories and spaceships, then there's no reason why it wouldn't be appropriate for an Indy film, as you said.

Exactly, Indiana Jones is not going to shake hands with E.T. We'll see something spectacular at the film's climax for sure, but Indy will just shrug it off and put the crystal skulls back where they belong. Indy's reluctance to acknowledge the supernatural's existence is what helps draw in people to each of the films, regardless of their faith.
I just think the crystal skulls, with everything otherwordly they represent, was certainly a more interesting idea than some of the other concepts thrown around by fans, which were nicely dealt with in the novels. Certainly, aliens beats dinosaurs, which was the subject of a Max McCoy book (bless him).

I'd love an Indy action figure, maybe a big 12" one or even a regular action figure size one. I've got a Raiders of the Lost Ark Indy figure where he's dressed like the Nazi. Not a great figure at all but still cool since its vintage.

It is the 1950's.... these are when all the conspiracy theories started floating around... I know for a fact we won't see aliens in UFOs shooting laser beams.... or even a dead alien body that was preserved for that matter... I am glad they went with a new world civilization... they went with an Eastern (Shankara)... and Middle (Ark of the Covenants)... a Western (Holy Grail) .. and now an ancient Western artifact (Skulls, although it shouldn't have been a fictional one). I wanted either this film or the new Mummy film to touch on a New World civ... I am glad it ended up being Indy.

Me and my brothers had an interesting idea for a movie about Indy when he's getting older. The prize would be the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden.
Also, we worked the adult version of Shorty from Temple of Doom into the story, as well as Indy's mousey illegit daughter from an early adventure who works as an "archivist" (basically a dignified term for "librarian") at another university. Dr. Henry Jones Sr. would be the new curator of the museum because Marcus would have passed on. The badguys would be communists.
Some ancient scrolls would tell that the Garden of Eden was not destroyed during Noah's flood, but managed to survive somehow. The only way to know where it is would be to find a map of the pre-flood world, and the only one that exists is somewhere in the petrifyed hull of of Noah's Ark. So it's off to Turkey, where they scale Mount Errerat to find what's left of the most famous ship ever built. They have a violent run-in with Turkish government agents, but they are able to copy the petrified map and escape before an avalanche covers the ark in snow.
The map leads them to a massive glacier, where the garden is said to have survived. Deep under the surface, the ice has managed to act as a greenhouse that has kept the garden's many plants alive throughout the millenia. Unfortunately, they get followed by the communists. The gateway to the garden is guarded by the two "creatures" that the bible spoke of. They are massive statues hewn out of solid onyx, and one poor fool ends up tasting the "firey sword" as he attempts to cross: he gets incinerated by a wall of flame that the two statues instantly generate as he tries to cross. Indy, through some archeologist cleverness, manages to get himself and his friends through without getting torched. The soviets with their fireproof APCs though, are not far behind.
When inside the garden, Indy must face the one thing he never wants to face in his entire life: a giant, hundreds-of-feet-long Snake with a head the size of a car. After a huge action scene involving the snake, Indy manages to beat it back, and they then discover the tree of life, but there's a catch: the tree is now nothing but a dried out husk that's been dead since the dawn of man.
This moment is cut short though, by the communist soldiers. Fortunately, our worst-friend the giant snake comes back, and begins downing them like tater tots. Indy flee for the exit, and manage to escape with their lives. While Indy feels let down about coming home with no prize, and no younger than he was when he left, through his daughter he realises that there are some things other than adventures that make life worth living. Our heros then begin the long journey back to civilization. The End
:indy:
I'd love a similar plot outline for the 5th movie. You'd have to work Mutt in (and becuase of that it'd probably be a good idea to write out the Indy daughter character) But definitely keep the grown-up short round and overall "Tree of Life" outline. It sounds like a perfect final chapter to the Indy saga.

Not many westerners would know what the shankara stones were, and I doubt many people really know (or knew) much about the arc of the covenant either.
The holy grail was really the only one which everyone had probably heard of.

Indiana Jones Trailer Coming Next Week
Source: Variety February 8, 2008
Variety has confirmed what we hinted at in early December, 2007, the first trailer for Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be hitting theaters and online next week:
Par will attach the first teaser for "Crystal Skull" to fantasy pic "The Spiderwick Chronicles" on Feb. 14, with the spot to hit the Web shortly thereafter.
Reason for the delay is that the film only recently wrapped, so much of the material that would go into a memorable trailer just wasn't ready until now.
Awareness and anticipation also is already high for the pic, so producers didn't feel the need to show too much too soon.
"In the case of Indiana Jones, he's such a well-known character that it's not like you have to get out there and introduce something new," said Spielberg spokesman Marvin Levy. "You tailor the campaign to the material. We also want to keep a lot of the surprises. That's part of the fun."
We'll let you know as soon as the trailer is online, stay tuned!

They've pretty well ret-conned "Raiders of the Lost Ark" into " Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" so no it's not to long:

Yikes, I just saw on Dark Horizons that the new Indy is only 103 minutes long. I'm all for movies that are short and to the point... but I was really hoping for something longer here.
It's hard to fit much of an "epic" into 103 minutes. No matter how well-paced it is, you can always feel it when an action movie is too short (Rambo being the latest example).
We need to read better people. It is an article about the TRAILER being screened by the British Board of Film Classification(BBFC) AND it states that the TRAILER is 103 SECONDS long.
All they've done is grade the trailer and found it suitable.
DarkHorizons.com
Now deep breath the run time of the actual movie has yet to be revealed. This is why we quote things.

The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) have passed official classification of the new "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" trailer, given it a rating of PG with "no cuts made" and revealed that it has a relatively short 103-second runtime.

John Hurt Talks Indiana Jones IV
And the trailer's out next week
http://www.empireonline.com/images/image_index/150x180/21096.jpg http://www.empireonline.com/images/point.gif
http://www.empireonline.com/images/point.gif
Empire recently caught up with John Hurt (a name that must only be spoken in a growly voice) and he filled us in on a few details about what sort of sequences he's been shooting for Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.
We'd always expected his role, which he still won't officially confirm as being Abner Ravenwood, father of Marion, to be just a cameo. But he's saying that he'll be there in the thick of it for much of the second half of the movie.
"Am I involved in the big action set pieces? Oh yeah," he said. "He is, shall we say, very much there by name in the first half and present in the second half...I shot in Hawaii and five different Hollywood studios: Universal, Downey, Paramount, Warner and Sony. I don't think I'm allowed to tell you anymore".
John Hurt: Action Hero? Nice.
In other Indy IV news, it's been finally confirmed, by Variety, that the trailer will be released next week. Apparently, the delay in seeing any footage has been due to the fact that the film only recently wrapped, so all the exciting stuff you'd want for a trailer wasn't ready until very recently. The trailer will be attached to The Spiderwick Chronicles in the States on Valentines Day and should appear online at the same time. Stay tuned.

Eh, I found the new featurette rather disappointing. Again, it's just more clips from the old film rather than anything substantial pertaining to the new one. We get a few nice glimpses of some new stuff, but not much.

You can keep things secret regarding plot details while still providing good featurettes. None of the featurettes have been particularly interesting.

I'm also bored of old footage from the previous films but the excerpts of Ford and seconds of behind the scenes footage from Crystal Skulls was enough to make me woot:woot:
all just two hours, or just thereafter... this is the first one under two hours
The runtime is good enough for me
Yeah, the trailer update is nothing new, just confirmation of really old info. And for those hoping for a 2+ hour movie, the run time is set at 103 min. This is only about 12 min shorter than Raiders.
Oh how I can't wait to see this trailer next week. Took long enough, but he's finally back.

^it's like i've fallen on a room full of deaf ears
how long are the first 3 indy movies?
115, 118, 126 minutes respectively. For The Last Crusade, a large chunk of that extra time is for the prologue. I'm not too worried about 103 minutes.

This is why we quote things.
http://www.darkhorizons.com/news08/080207o.php
The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) have passed official classification of the new "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" trailer, given it a rating of PG with "no cuts made" and revealed that it has a relatively short 103-second runtime.

Example:
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
feel free to disagree, but "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skulls" has a better flow to it
I'm going to nit-pick every detail about this movie until it comes out and rocks my socks off.

I am not a fan of the title, but Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skulls sounds very underwhelming and without scope. All the Indy movies have some "epic" word in their title to convey scope, such as Raiders, Temple, and Crusade. They're attention-grabbers. I think Kingdom gives the title big scale feel.

Yeah but i can see how manywould think this I mean Ghost Rider looks good in the Trailers too and so did Daredevil. The similarities would be that both films had lots of big names as well. So i can see the similarities but i also like you think Favreau has a good healthy enough brain cells to pull this one off.

Containing the long out-of-print stories, "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis," "Thunder in the Orient," and "Indiana Jones and the Arms of Gold," this substantial tome follows the intrepid Dr. Jones as he travels from Africa to Asia and nearly everywhere in between in a race against the Nazis for the world's greatest treasures. From lost cities, to ancient temples, to artifacts of legendary power, Indy will stop at nothing to preserve these prizes from the grasp of Adolf Hitler's evil minions.

Episode I trailer was pretty good if you ask me... really raised eyebrows in that it was just really different from what we were accustomed to seeing from Star Wars. That said you really can't expect that same rush from an Indiana movie at this point... unless we see Ford cutting down bridges (which we won't)... jumping out of planes in a life boat (which we won't)... I find it hard to believe its the action and intensity that will get people riled up for this film... it will merely be the trailer previewing the return of Dr. Jones... and that's all people want to see...

I saw Raiders in the theater in 1981. The melting Nazis scene scared the crap out of me, so I was not allowed to see Temple of Doom when that was released. I saw Last Crusade on its opening night, during a trip to Disney World. I still have the poster I bought in the lobby.
Two years ago I got to see all 3 movies on the big screen on the same day, when they were doing a marathon in NY. It was my first time seeing Temple of Doom in the theater. It was GREAT.

i'm inclined to agree, it seems thrown together and the timing seems a bit strange, but I remember how awesome the trailer seemed before the movie came out so i guess it did its job.
Honestly, this Indy trailer had better not be a dumb teaser, but at 103 seconds seems unlikely.

When my brother bought the VHS box set back in the day... it came with a young Indy episode... and yeah I have to agree... the show was atrocious... at least that one episode was... they got a lot of cool characters in the series but the execution is worse than the prequel trilogy if you know what I mean... typical 90's George Lucas...

It wouldnīt make much sense to have Sallah in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull unless they were in Egypt. I think the only way to have Sallah appear in the film is for there to be a wedding at the end of the film and have him make a cameo, but if the plot doesnīt involve a trip to Egypt then thereīs no point in having Sallah make an appearance.

Wait, wait, wait.... WHAT?? I know this is the Indy thread and all, but I've got to go off topic for a second. Saying that you think it won't do as well as Indy is one thing, personally I believe it can go either way, but still that's fine, but saying it won't be able to outdo IRON MAN?? That's just crazy talk. You are officially the Anne Coulter of the hype, congratulations.
Iron Man will probably attract more families. That's just what I think, though I think TDK might do better than IM WW. I think TDK will be better than IM... hopefully.

Here come Harrison (in fine form) and 'Indiana Jones'
USA Today
Scott Bowles
February 13, 2008
Indiana Jones fanatics are about to get the ultimate Valentine's Day gift: the first trailer of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which hits airwaves and the Internet Thursday.
The trailer, which marks the first time fans get new scenes of Harrison Ford as the intrepid archaeologist, will air on ABC's Good Morning America (between 8 and 9 a.m. ET/PT) before moving to IndianaJones.com, Yahoo and theaters.
The ad for the film, due May 22, is the latest maneuver in a stingy marketing campaign meant to create new fans as well as rekindle interest among older ones in a franchise that left theaters 19 years ago.
Director Steven Spielberg and executive producer George Lucas have kept nearly all elements of the movie, from plot points to set locales, under wraps.
But Ford is willing to answer at least one of the foremost questions on fans' minds: How much of a swashbuckler can Indiana Jones still be as a senior citizen?
"My body is fine," Ford, 65, says with a laugh. "It really was not an issue."
Ford says that he has kept in shape partly because "I've been anticipating and hoping we'd have one for the past 15 years."
He says the same is true for getting back into the mind-set of a bullwhip-cracking adventurer fond of fedoras and leather jackets.
"I more or less kept the character warm in my head," says Ford, whose next film is the immigration drama Crossing Over, due June 13. "Although we hadn't made one in 18 years, every moment I spent in that (expletive) suit, I remembered."
Script and scheduling conflicts kept the movie out of theaters for nearly two decades; the last episode was 1989's The Last Crusade.
Crystal will be set during the height of the Cold War in 1957, with Jones on the hunt for South American relics with supernatural powers. But Ford believes fans have always been as drawn to the spirit of the franchise as the plot.
"It's a very special kind of audience film," he says. "The film style is more in phase with the late 1950s than 2007."
Which means elaborate sets and stunts. While there will still be plenty of computer-generated effects, Ford says that Crystal is one of the most physical films he has done.
"I probably did more in this film than I did in the ones previous because there have been advances in the area of stunt technology," he says. "I was nothing but happy to get back to that kind of filmmaking."
