It doesn't look right to me. CG works best when its blended with realism. this looks like a greenscreen though.:csad:
Like in the previous movies :yay:
I wanted an Indy Jones movie with the exact same tone and look as the previous ones, I think I'm going to get it
But anyway, hopefully that won't keep you from loving the movie

stunt men have their own specialty. The accident in TDK was caused by a stunt driver, not the man who died.
You could do your stunt, but accidents happen. Who is to say this was an insane stunt anyways. It could have been a mild stunt and been touched up by cg. Accidents happen.
The thing is when there are alternatives it is pointless to risk a life.

Ford, speilberg and marshall i believe have all said the film is like 70% physical/sets/ an stunts, and around 30% cgi, matte paining/plate shots of exotic locals, and for dangerous scenes like the cliff car scene. This is only a teaser we should wait to the film is out in may to judge all the physical effects and the cgi effects. Spielberg as said while making the film they relyed more on physical effects then cgi. Yes it was used and green screen was done too for scenes but i am fine with it. As others have said the other films used cgi in various scenes of the old films. Overall i thought it was pretty good teaser.

Great comments about the teaser in New York magazine:
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/02/indiana_jones_and_the_kingdom.html
Tagline: "He protected the power of the divine. He saved the cradle of civilization. He triumphed over the armies of evil…"
Translation: …but can a 65-year-old man still whip things properly?
The Verdict: It sure looks like it! Fears over Indiana Jones's advancing age are defused early in this just-released trailer with a gag about his eyesight, then it's on to quick-cut action shots to show that he's still quite capable of whipping things and/or making them explode. There's a fight in what looks to be the warehouse from Raiders of the Lost Ark, and we see a crate labeled "Roswell, New Mexico, 1947" pretty much confirming that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will, in fact, have aliens in it. Cate Blanchett looks awesome, and Shia LaBeouf isn't in it long enough to get on our nerves (though we suspect his part in the actual movie will be larger). None of the special effects seem too egregious, and all dialogue is appropriately corny. Is it really possible that George Lucas hasn't screwed up this franchise? Maybe!
DoctorJones
02-14-2008, 12:47 PM
There are only two hundred CG shots in the film. And somebody is whinging about one minor thing?
If Raiders was made today, Spielberg would have used CG for the medallion light and the opening of the Ark. Likewise, he would have used CG for the larva pit in Doom and the climax of Crusade. He doesn't believe in overt bluescreen work (unless it's an animated film, which is how he's viewing Tintin).

All I can say is it looks like a fun Indy movie, it still has that same feel that the others had. And its got the light hearted humor sprinkled through out.

...anyway, just saw the trailer. looks like it'll be fantastic. seeing Indy run across the stacks of boxes in the warehouse then whipping onto the hanging lamp gave me goosebumps. pure awesome! Harrison Ford doesn't look as weird as i thought he would. i actually think he looks pretty damn good for a 65 year old. Blanchette looks to be a force to be reckoned with and Shia looks okay i guess, hehe. i'm really looking forward to this movie and i hope this means the return of good ol' Spielberg.

As a longtime 'Berg fan, I'd say this film is certainly interesting. A lot of people dismissed Indy before Schindler's List came out, unaware of the depth of character in these movies compared to other action films. I believe Spielberg doesn't feel a need to prove himself anymore, and can keep the darkness to his more dramatic films. I mean, he is making Tintin alongside Lincoln and the Chicago 7...

Never watched the IJ special features have you? Lucas came up with the idea and most of the story. Speilberg just directed it and made it not suck.
Lucas came up with the concept of an adventurer named Indiana Smith. Original conception goes to him, yes, Lucas also thought out a rough story involving a biblical artifact, him and Spielberg made a rough outline featuring several scenes and ideas. From there Lawrence Kasdan took over and wrote the script. Steven Spielberg directed the film, he was on set every single day making decisions, he also edited the film as he found necessary. In the end it is Lucas's origination but Spielberg's conclusion.

My initial fear was that it wouldn't FEEL like an Indiana Jones film. kinda like how the newest Die Hard really didn't have that Die Hard feel too it.

Reason I've been staying away is don't want to hear too many spoilers. First Indiana Jones film in a theater- ever. Which is huge. :woot:

Been going through the other boards though. And still trying to bring together the SM6 script along with other projects, so while bad news- sm6 is in 'development hell' good news- still in development.
I usually saw you on the Spidey boards, but they're pretty much dead now. I wonder what direction they'll go with SM4.
I've been on TDK boards mostly...that's my #1 summer movie this year. Indiana Jones 4 would be #2 for me.

Yea i agree with u there i didnt see anything wrong with cg in the teaser. As i stated speilberg, ford, lucas, producers have said film is like 70% physical effects/stunts and 30% cgi. So we should wait to the film is out to judge the ammount of cgi and ammount of physical effects.
I noticed one pretty bad green screen effect, but still the teaser was great, the tone was like every other Indy movie. Loved him missing the one truck and crashing into the other, classic Indy. Felt much more in tone with the franchise than the first teaser for Die Hard 4 did.

CGI = computer generated images.
the old indy movies had CGI?
yeah
no they did not.
they had some morphing in part 3 but there was no computer generated imagery in the first three movies.
none.

How long until this series gets Special Edition treatment and becomes full of CGI? Lucas might start getting itchy for shiny and new Indy movies made out of the already perfect old ones.

Yeah, some posters are getting way too out of control.
Back then they use models, today they use a computer. Do those people obviously want to see models rather than CGI today? And um, why exactly???
Or for some reason were they looking for a film that was 100% practical, if so- sorry to tell u that was never the case on any of the films.

I understand some people getting pissed. Like many of them, I'd like the films to fit the style and feel of the originals as close as possible. I am however, not against CGI if used correctly.

I thought the same way with DieHard. The original was all practical stunts with little to no CGI, just some greenscreening in the other 2. Then there was some CGI in Live Free or Die Hard but i dont think it ruined the Die Hard legacy

And from what I saw the CGI is AMAZING. Might be mistaken, but think that waterfall shot is also CGI- unless there's some place on this world that is actually that cool.

02-14-2008, 04:41 PM
i think a lot of people are confusing CG shots with well lit and beautiful shots. film making has evolved to the point where directors are able to make EVERY SINGLE SHOT picture perfect and that throws a lot of people off. the only part of the trailer that had obvious CG were the shots of them driving near the cliff.....and it's totally understandable why they would use green screen during that sequence.
if you have a serious problem with the CG in this TEASER trailer then you really need to get a life.

That trailer gets a 9.9 out of 10. The whole "not at easy as it used to be" is the only reason it didn't get a 10/10. It makes me a little nervous that I might actually have to hear a variation of "I'm getting too old for this ____." :cmad: But, it did make me feel like a kid, again. :yay:
I remember watching the first Indiana Jones in the theater. I was 5, and I remember my mom tried to cover my eyes when the Ark melted the Nazis.
But, I saw the whole thing between her fingers. :woot:
"Raiders" has been and probably always will be my favorite movie of all time, representing basically everything I go to the movies for. So, it's no surprise that I'm more excited to see this movie than any other since Superman Returns, and I trust Spielberg/Lucas/Ford to not leave me disappointed (unlike SR).
I'm not thrilled about the CGI, but I hope they limit it to actual special effects. In other words, if it can be done by a stuntman/stunt vehicle, don't replace it with CGI. I don't care that Raiders features a noticeable trench in the road during the ark transport chase scene or that the film footage "speeds" up at times to give the illusion of high speed when Indy's underneath/behind the truck. I don't care that you could see Indy's reflection in the glass separating him from the cobra--that just makes it all part of the fun of enjoying the "old school" feel of the Indiana Jones experience.

I have a spec about this (it may be off, or confirmed by spoilers, I don't know)
I think the Ark may be used as a red herring to start. Indy, or the US gov't, thinks it's what the Commies are after, hence Jones rushing off to the warehouse to fight them (in order to protect the Ark since he is the only person who knows its power). Only there do they realize that the commies are after something entirely different...whatever is in the box marked Roswell, thus leading them in a chase for the Crystal Skull.

Firewall was terrible.
I can't wait to see Ford's return as the action star for what I believe will be the last time. After Indy IV, I think it's time he continues his career to a new turn, try some 'older' roles like something Ian McKellen would do instead of still trying to hang on to the last shreds of playing the adventurer.
He can finally go after that Oscar now.

I agree, it was everything I expected...however I wasn't surpised by some of the negativity. Internet movie fans remind me of Jet and Eagle fans. Always pessimistic.

I thought the trailer was pretty good. The first part has an epic feel to it that reminds you that there were previous movies and then it jumps into the iconic image of his shadow putting on the hat, reminding you of hats and shadows which are imagery. Then there is humor, whip crackling noises and a possible love interest in Shia LaBouff. Three and a half out of four and a half.

WOW... can't wait for this film.
the trailer is here :D
Watched the trailer, a little skeptical to be honest. Some of that action looked abit too much. He's supposed to be older in this film yet he seems to be doing crazier stunts then he could do when he was younger. The original trilogy never had him doing those sorts of things, and what he did do always looked like a struggle, y'know, because humans generally can't go ass first through a windscreen, swing onto a jeep doing 60mph etc. All the action in the orginal trilogy was totally believable, in my view anyway.
Also, did i see CGI(the plane, car chase with Blanchett)? Yes, yes i think i did. And it looked bad, Star Wars bad.
I'm looking foward to this film more than anything else, cos Indiana Jones are in the list of my favourite films without a doubt, but i just they don't cheapen it with unneccesary decisions. I'll probably get flamed for whining but whatever whatver.

One thing that's annnoying me is the whole The Dark Knight vs Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull fanboy wars that has been going on in these different forums like rotten tomatoes and chud and even here a little. Batman fans have to rip indy for its lightness and fun and indy fans have to rip batman for not having as many oscars. WTF? This summer in all likely hood we're going to get at LEAST 2 big budget quality films by two of the best directors working today. This is a great time to be a movie fan, and instead of putting the two against each other and immaturely squabbling about which is superior, we should be biting our nails in anticipation for both.

bigger action scenes yes, but at the cost of realism? I don't know. Indy was always tough, but never super tough. the crazy things he did hurt him, and hurt him badly.
I read somewhere earlier about the old matte painting system working better than this new CG. Truth, irregardless of how hard they try, the matte painting/background system is still superior. I understand that the more they use the CG, the better it will get. But like in the first paragraph, at what cost?
Better techonology should allow bigger and better things to be brought to screen... but they must fit within the context of the setting.
And you can definately bet, that Lucas has his dirty little fingers in there somewhere

todays matte paingins are IMO better.

I could agree, when the backgrounds are in motion.
But I don't know what I think is better. With the CG, sometimes it looks good, sometimes it looks horrible. Atleast in the original Indy's and StarWars for example, the mattes were simple, but you never really noticed them (only a few special cases, where movement was involved before the advent of more advanced computer compositing).
I can't really decide on the topic right now. But what I think we can agree on, is that more often than not, they try and push the use of CG too far. In many movies, there are certainly a huge number of examples where CG was used for absolutely no reason whatsoever (I Am Legend and the 'vampires' that could have easily been played by people in makeup which looks twice as good as the CG at probably 1/4 the price being a perfect example of this).
Basically, I'm sayin this. CG is good, but I hope it's not pushed to the point where it become ridiculously obvious that what the audience is looking at, is computer generated.

You want an argument about the overuse of CGI then there it is right there. Why do they even choose these shots? Madness.
Indiana Jones is my personal 2nd favorite film franchise/character.
Coming from that mindset, I'm pleased with the trailer, and look forward to May 22nd with much anticipation.

No kidding. There are lots of examples of cheap/80s cheesy CG in the old films. One that drives me crazy is the background storm when they find the location of the ark in RoLA.
That wasn't CGI...it was a simple composite shot.
I think a lot of people seem to confuse Visual F/X for CGI.

I still find it incredible the amount of weak CGI'd shots in a very short teaser trailer. Surely they know how the censors work? Why would you put out inferior and messed up shots of your movie?
scifiwolf
02-15-2008, 09:42 AM
The point of the shot of Mac and Indy is to deliver the dialogue. Dont forget, too, that this movie will likely be PG-13, and its trailer is attached to a PG movie. Having a medium shot of so many soldiers pointing automatic weapons won't do. They reduce the number of soldiers, and change them so the weapons aren't being aimed directly at Mac and Indy. It's a trade off between the censoring and including the line "Not as easy as it used to be," so Frank Marshall went with the dialogue. Spielberg had absolutely nothing to do with the trailer.
How'd Indy's hat get all the way into the middle of the airstrip when he was in the trunk?
Also, did anyone else get the cheesy 50s B-movie feel from the trailer?
