Indy needs 400 million to break even!

The article talks about the deal that Lucas, Spielberg and their minions made to get the film made. It's pretty complex.

A portion of the article

Unless sales are big, 'Indiana Jones' giants won't be paid
By Claudia Eller, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
April 21, 2008
The Indiana Jones series is known for its cliffhangers. But the real cliffhanger in the long-awaited upcoming sequel is when -- and perhaps even if -- the famous filmmakers and the star will make money.

That's because before executive producer George Lucas, director Steven Spielberg and leading man Harrison Ford get their hands on any treasure, Paramount Pictures will need to collect $400 million in revenue to recover all its costs and make a sizable fee to distribute "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."
If that seems like a no-brainer, consider the norm in Hollywood, where top-tier filmmakers and stars traditionally earn huge upfront fees and get a big cut of ticket sales before a studio recoups its investment.

The atypical arrangement between the studio and the triumvirate illustrates the new economic realities of the movie business. As production and marketing costs continue to escalate amid flat theater attendance and declining DVD sales, studios are increasingly looking for ways to protect themselves from colossal losses on a single picture.

"It's good for both parties," said media analyst Harold Vogel. "If the talent has a true belief in the movie, they are taking a little more risk by getting no significant compensation upfront but a much larger share of the ultimate profitability," he explained. "It makes sense for studios, which are cash-constrained."

With regard to the trailer, it was revealed by IESB.net in March to expect the trailer in "mid-to-late April." The Hollywood Reporter followed nine days later with an article stating that the second trailer will come in the Indy 4 widget. I think I also remember Frank Marshall quoting Iron Man for the trailer in theaters, but I can't find it. It certainly fits with "mid-to-late April."

I knew it was going to be "a tad over two hours". Do you have a link to the source?

Confirmation comes directly from Paramount.

TheRaider.net has received official confirmation, directly from Paramount Pictures, that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be 2 hours long, including credits!

Thus not 2 hours and 20 minutes as was mentioned (http://www.theraider.net/news/fullstory_indy4.php?id=686) earlier this week. The assumption must have come from the info that the film was distributed on 7 reels. And each reel can take "maximum" 20 minutes.

Composer John Williams (http://www.theraider.net/news/fullstory_indy4.php?id=688) mentioned the 7 reels for Indy 4 and Hollywood Elsewhere (http://www.theraider.net/news/fullstory_indy4.php?id=686) was the first to report the running time of 140 minutes. But we know now that info was not correct.

Note: Indyfan Marko Grimani (from Slovenia) wrote me with the info that he was informed by his local distributor of Indiana Jones 4 that the runtime of the new film will be 123 minutes.

So we now know that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with 2 hours (or if correct: precisely 123 minutes) will not be the longest Indy film after all. That record remains with the Last Crusade at 2 hours and 7 minutes

I'd be shocked if we don't get some big trailer besides Wall-E with Prince Caspian. My guess is Indy could be seen with Caspien as well as Iron Man. Or Maybe TDK will be released with Caspian.

Um also Indy 4 is about the same length of the indy films over 2 hours slightly. Its George Lucas theme except for Revenge Of The Sith.

Am I the only one that can't get over Shia? Everything else looks so good, he just looks so out of place.

i don't think they've revealed enough about shia's role nor have they shown enough scenes with anyone other than harrison in these previews...so...if you wanna look at it that way...a lot of it looks out of place for now...not to me...but i can see why your coming to that conclusion...and keep in mind its the 50's, that in itself is gonna be exciting to see...but will still feel out of place.

True, but it is the actor himself. His look. It just doesn't fit for me. It is like how some actors are just built for certain time periods and settings. I am so excited for this though. Big fan of Raiders so seeing Marion is a treat.

I want to see a classroom scene similar to those in ROTLA and TLC, but in this movie all of the students - especially the girls- are disinterested. It would demonstrate how Indy has aged, I think.

No disrespect to you, Gamma, but I don't like that idea. It's not like Ford has aged into a hideous beast. The guy's 65, and he looks damn good for his age. I know a ton of girls ranging from 18-26 who still think Ford looks "hawt". Hell, I think Karen Allen is still hot.;)

It would also be a sign of the times, where teenagers weren't afraid to be rebellious.

Yes, but being physically attracted to someone or not isn't necessarily being rebellious. It's not like all the girls were attracted to him in "Raiders" because they had to be, it was b/c they naturally found him attractive. It's a feeling.
Now if the students chose not to do Dr. Jone's assigned homework, well then, that would be rebellious:woot:

And having the girls be disinterested is also implying to the audience that he's too old and not attractive anymore, which I don't think is the image they're looking to portray in this movie.

I recently rented the Indy trilogy and watched the movies one per day to refresh my memory of the series.

There all right and are still cool in an old fashion way, Raiders still wins in terms of having the spectacular truck chase, Temple pretty much drags a bit when the last half hour turns into a roller coaster ride and Last Crusade is a nice ending of sorts to the relationship between Indy and his father.

Now will Kingdom be a huge Summer blockbuster? maybe it will but it's got tough competition from the The Dark Knight which I'm more interested in.

Indiana Jones 4 MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey all. It has been a while since I have posted, but I thought I would share some big details about Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystals Skull. These just came out in DK's Ultimate Guide Book to Indiana Jones. I am really getting hyped up.

THERE ARE SOME MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!!

Okay you still with me? Here we go.

SOME BACKGROUND
"Older and Wiser. Indy doesn't mellow with age. Twenty-one years after embarking on the search for the Ark of the Covenant, he is drawn into a quest that proves equally challenging and ultimately just as profound. Beginning at a government hangar in Nevada, the adventure takes Indy and a young companion to the coastal desert of Peru, and finally into the geart of the Amazon jungle---where some lives will be lost and others will be transformed"

ABOUT INDY'S COLLEGE LIFE
"A Professor's Life. While he continues to divide his time between teaching and searching the far reaches of the world for artifacts, Indiana Jones is beginning to feel that both the years and the mileage are catching up with him. Deeply affected by his experiences in World War II, he has become a more solitary, introspective man, at a point in his life where the losses hreatly outweigh the gains. The world, too, has changed. Borderlines have been redrawn, former allies have beome enemies, and roads and telephone lines have been pushed into what were once blank areas on the map. Most importantly, people no longer look to the past for answers, but to the future for salvation".

"His reputation precedes him. Following the recent deaths of his father and of Marcus Brody, Indy has found consolation in teaching and has published academic journals. Celebrated both for his prodessional skills and his adventures, Indy is Marshall College's most popular figure: his Archaeology 101 fills up faster than any other course---female students outnumbering males by three to one. Trips to the Yucatan Penunsul and Guatemala have meant Indy has added three Mayan dialects to the languages in which he is fluent".

"Indy sometimes yearns for the old days, when Brody would burst through the door, and the game would be afoot."

ABOUT THE "OX" (aka John Hurts character, who was speculated to be playing Abner Ravenwood----not exactly)
"Born in Leeds in 1887, 'freelance' archeologist Harold Oxley studied with Indy at Oxford under Professor Abner Ravenwood, and later became a close friend of Marion. But Oxley didn't share Ravenwood's fascination for finding Tanis and the Ark of the Covenant. Obsessed with unearthing a crystal skull, Oxley focused his efforts on Central and South Americas, and for many years sought fearlessly to prove that legends regarding El Dorado were based on fact. A close friend of Indy's for many years, Oxley, without explanation, broke off all communication with him in 1937"

ABOUT THE MYSTERIOUS "KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL"
"The Amazon rainforest conceals many secrets. Since Pizarro's conquest of Peru, rumors have persisted of the existance of a city of gold, known by the early conquistadors as El Dorado, and by the Inca as Akator. Built by the Ugha people with the help of their gods, Akator was said to have been millennia ahead of its time. The search for the city claimed the lives of many explorers and comes close to claiming Indy."

"Akator bequeathed monolithic architecture to the Tihuanacans; precision stonework to the Inca; corbel arch construction to the Maya; and ghoulish sculpture to the Aztec. An American Atlantis, it may be the source from which all other cities sprang."

A COLD WAR
"If Indy has learned anything over the years, it's that the world will never be safe from misguided people who would attempt to use sacred objects for manevolent purposes. Thuggees, Facists, Nazis....and now the Soviets have entered the game. Traumatized by what Germany did to Russia in World War II and fearing the nuclear might of the United States afterward, Joseph Stalin had urged the KGB to experiment with the hidden potentials of the human mind. And now the chief architect of those experiments in ESP has emerged from behind the Iron Curtain to seek out an object capable of elevating the Soviet Union to the forefront in psychic warefare."

IRINA SPALKO
"Raised in a superstitious Ukranian village, where her psychic abilities led her being branded a 'witch', Irina Spalko was handpicked by Stalin to oversee research into psychic warfare. A former member of the KGB's Science and Technology Directorate, Spalko has been decorated with the Order of Lenin, Her powers of intuition have taken her a long way from the experiments she performed on animals as a teenager. As voracious a seeker of truth as any Indy has ever met, Spalko shows there is no limit to how far she is prepared to go to achieve her goals. Her expertise with the saber, rapier, and foil drives the point home"

"Spalko is not daunted. She has broken harder men and she will break Indiana Jones"

SOME QUOTES:
"It's been a brutal couple of years Charlie" -Indiana Jones (talking to the new dean of students)
"Mutt's the name I picked. You have a problem with it?" -Mutt Williams (talking to Indy)
"Stare into its eyes, and it'll drive you mad" -Indiana Jones (about the crystal skull)
"We will be everywhere at once, Dr. Jones, as powerful as hypnotic command." -Irina Spalko (about the Stalin's plan)

I will have more to come......

alright, i was at work today and my co-worker told me that he watched the Today show this past week (or whatever show it was). There was a street segment where the host randomly asked a bunch of people (18 and younger) if they know who Indiana Jones was. And the majority of them has never heard of Indy (character or the movies).

Is this legit. I was yelling at my co-worker (in a nerdy way) on how is this remotely possible. I'm not old; i'm 24. My brother and his friends know about Indy. HOw is this possible.

It's depressing because that Today Show segment transcends past Indiana Jones. It means that those kids on that show probably don't give a crap about older movies and music, history, culture, etc. They only like the stuff NOW and that's it. I know that there's good kids out there, but man..I feel old now.

and i got into the movies from the 80s because i'm very nostlgic. And from there, the 70s and beyond.

They intentionally broadcast the opinions of very stupid people because that is more controversial than those with better opinions.

Think about it, who is going to get a documentary filmed about them? A cannibal nazi or a devout catholic priest?

The studio is always in need of a cash grab. Lucas has lost all credibility as a writer thanks to the SW prequels and I'm afraid this won't be anywhere near as kickass as Raiders or Crusade.

It's not an alien. It's one of the "cemetary warriors" wearing a skull-like mask.

alright, i was at work today and my co-worker told me that he watched the Today show this past week (or whatever show it was).

Interesting note in the LA Times today that might make you rest easier on the subject:

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/la-et-summer30apr30,1,902902.story

But when "Iron Man" starts playing Thursday night, the box office doldrums are likely to vanish. Rival studios and box office prognosticators say the comic-book adaptation could gross more than $80 million in its first weekend. "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which audience surveys show has astonishingly strong interest among children, probably will sell substantially more tickets when it opens May 22.
