Same here. He seemed a bit...neurotic. Of course they barely talked about Indy 4.

That's the way he always is in interviews. He's a wreck. That was the first time I saw the clip of him getting slimed, that was funny. :oldrazz:

He did seem excited about the movie though.

Too true. It's like John Williams and his scores. Will we ever see the likes of his genius ever again??? Scary thought... It's now the age of the predictable sequel and adaptation, and I think people are getting tired of them...

Shoot me at dawn but I quite liked A View to A Kill and even Die Another Day. But I also loved Casino Royale too. The Bond movies tend to fit the era in which they are made; they're fantasy espionage films at the end of the day and given that there have been 22 movies in the past 46 years, then they are never going to be totally consistent. Die Another Day fitted its period, taking fantasy elements (invisible car, ice-palace) and popculture elements (Halle, Madonna) to a peak. Today people want dark and gritty and hence Casino Royale came along with Bond getting his nuts smashed to bits.

I'm taking my old man (who originally got me into the Indiana Jones film) with me. I remember when I told him we were going to see it a few weeks back. He said, "They're making another one? I wonder what kind of trouble Indy will get himself into this time..."

To be honest, I'm more looking forward to seeing it with him than the film itself at this point. Don't get me wrong, I hope it's solid as Hell. But those reviews that leaked last week mixed with Lucas' overall down-playing of expectations doesn't paint Indy IV in the best light.

That said, if it turns out great; that's...great! If it sucks, that's fine too. It won't be the end of the world and we'll always have the other Indy films to enjoy!

George Lucas never praised his films and at very best is his worst critic actually and it normal for him to down play a film for he does it all the time. In some cases if lUcas didn't like it for real it could mean its amazing.
And pay no attention to critics for they don't like alot of summer movies.

Or maybe because he knew the originals and possible KOTCS are going to be good, so he doesn't want people's hype or expectations to get too high cause it might ruin the experience.

With the prequels, maybe he knew they were **** so he decided to hype them up to get people to go.

It's been awhile but I think that was in the book.

This is why Lucas downplays Indy 4: http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2008-03-24-lucas_N.htm

"When you do a movie like this, a sequel that's very, very anticipated, people anticipate ultimately that it's going to be the Second Coming," Lucas says. "And it's not. It's just a movie. Just like the other movies. You probably have fond memories of the other movies. But if you went back and looked at them, they might not hold up the same way your memory holds up."

The remarks appear to be part of a larger strategy to build interest yet temper expectations for the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise. Only one trailer is playing, and when director Steven Spielberg shows up for talk shows, he doesn't bring footage.

Lucas says he learned his lesson about unrealistic expectations when he revived the Star Wars franchise in 1999. "When people approach the new ('Indiana Jones'), much like they did with 'Phantom Menace,' they have a tendency to be a little harder on it," he says. "You're not going to get a lot of accolades doing a movie like this. All you can do is lose."

I think he's just trying to make the point that it's just a fun Indy movie. When people have high expectations with movies, and specially franchises that we have cherished since little, they do tend to come out dissapointed.:hehe:

FLOP? Rediculous. People are going to see it. Even if it sucks they will see it. Movies with high expectations like this one are almost guaranteed a huge opening weekend, and a few after that. And of course Iron Man isn't doing Spider-Man numbers. He's far less popular in the public eye. The sequel will be just as big, if not bigger. And there's a box office slowdown right now (if you can call it that, these past two weeks have been the biggest of the year)only because there are maybe 2 or 3 good movies that people want to actually see. I wouldn't say he's far less popular. He's right up there next to the hulk, slightly below x-men, but he's no iron fist or some other obscure character... Anyway I hope the sequel's less generic than the first.

heh, I think my point is that things were supposed to have kicked in already but obviously aren't. The last few years have become saturated with big fx movies. All I'm saying is maybe that's had an impact on today's film's potential for success. The only movie that I can see pulling through as this years break out hit, is Wall-e at this point and that movie looks really lame to me. Still, it's original, and I think audiences are going to gravitate more to original stuff more than the same old thing.

I don't see how any of you can say the movie will flop. A lot of older people and elderly people I know who rarely ever go the movies say they'll be there. Its the type of movie that even if you rarely go to the theater you'll still go see it. I think it'll be huge.

So I just got done watch the Last Crusade and I'm even more excited now! I can't help but think of a small logical flaw in the film...correct me if I'm wrong, but if my memory serves me correctly Italy was on the side of the Nazis yes? Iron Man is doing great business. It's already made its money back when you look at the domestic and international grosses and it's only in it's 2nd weekend. People are loving it, even if they weren't that familiar with the character before. The only superhero movie doing Spiderman-business is, well...Spiderman. That series is in a whole other league, you can't expect every superhero movie to do the same.

And people are psyched for Indy IV. My sister hasn't been to a movie since my nephew was born, but they're getting a babysitter so they can see it. My dad and I are driving cross-country next week and we're making a stop at the first decent movie theater we can find it to see it.

No, that's not my argument. I can understand criticisms of it, to some extent (some of the dialogue and plot points), but I think you are looking/thinking too hard about everything and stressing out over things.

I expected 10,000BC, based on the name and the trailers, to be a prehistoric adventure movie. Since we don't know the language of that era, then the film had to either have grunts with subtitles or modern language. We all know how subtitled movies perform - America often needs subtitles on films with British accents (The Full Monty), let alone primeval grunting. All aspects of the movie can be roughly linked to that timeframe. Yes, it took liberties, but then One Million Years BC had Raquel Welch screaming at dinosaurs (and is still a great movie) and '300' had a goat-headed musician and a giant rhinoceros. The 'art' of the concepts is greater than the detail.

Danoyse let me use the photo she took in New York, so thanks for that! I'm getting such mixed views on this movie, from a woman at work who is raving on about it, to someone else at work saying 'word on the street' is that it will be a failure. I shall have to go to see it, for work purposes; but I don't know if I'd rush to see it otherwise. It's like something from another age of film-making. And I'm not struck on Shia or on Cate's look that much.

Comments on my blog are welcome of course, as always. If you think I've got it all wrong, and want to encourage people to see the movie, then say so on my blog, which has thousands of mainstream readers.

My bad. I heard at one point that it was subtitled in the US because the British accents in it (which weren't stereotypically English educated accents or Cockney London accents) were too hard to understand.

But the point was that subtitled movies get a much smaller release. And also that a prehistoric movie with made-up caveman language and subtitles would be a bit silly.

No offense, but this is a crock of *****ake mushrooms, if I may. You've been saying the same thing since that movie came out.

You expected it to be a prehistoric adventure movie, and it obviously was. Since it met your genre expectations, does that make it a good film. No, and you seem to be one of the select few that enjoyed it. I also don't understand why you feel the need to bringup the matter of subtitles and historical liberties. No one was even commenting on those, and they don't matter so much in a fictional adventure film like this. With that said, the film still blew.

You may want to comment on this:
http://blogs.coventrytelegraph.net/thegeekfiles/2008/04/10000-bc-is-mammoth-entertainm.html

This is also lame. You've just addressed why everyone hates the film, and then explained why you felt differently, stating that you didn't mind them speaking English or the various historical inaccuracies.I just don't underatand why you can't accept that the general public and critics alike though this film was crap.

My bad. I heard at one point that it was subtitled in the US because the British accents in it (which weren't stereotypically English educated accents or Cockney London accents) were too hard to understand.

I don't remember anyone having a problem with The Full Monty. Wouldn't be surprised if they did though. All it takes is one person to complain about it. :whatever:

The only movie I remember having a hard time understanding the British accents was Billy Elliot, but I adjusted to it after the first half-hour and it's currently one of my all-time favorite movies.

What did you think of my Indy article?

Very good. I left a comment. Love the photo. :oldrazz:

Loads of people on here commented on 'historical liberties' - even though there weren't that many. Mammoths and sabretooths were round then, the giant birds were once thought to exist then, the Atlantis legend referenced and the new age theory on pyramid building all refer to 10,000BC.

Those things aside, I really didn't think it 'blew.' And neither did the public in general if we look at box office - $265m box office (budget was $105m). That's reasonable but not spectacular.

What we can prove here is that you didn't like it and I did.

It's not 'lame', it can walk properly and has full use of its legs, thank you. It's a blog, an opinion piece. I don't accept that 'the general public and critics' thought this film was crap because i haven't spoken to each and every one of them. All I know is that you don't like it and that you have a problem with anyone who does - which means it's you who has the problem, not me! Roll on the DVD release. :hehe:

From what I've heard it's basically new featurettes with the cast & crew (from the set of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) that is a complete re-hash from those fantastic documentaries from the previous set.

I'd recommend buying The Adventures of Indiana Jones DVD collection (i.e. the set from a few years back). It's still available on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Indiana-Raiders-Temple-Crusade/dp/B00003CXC5/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1210768104&sr=1-1

As a matter of fact, I bought that yesterday afternoon after work for some good friends of mine's little boys (i.e. aged 2 and 3). They're going to eat those movies up. Can't wait to see their reaction to Raiders.

Ford has never really done well in interviews...like someone else said, he's nervous. some actors can do great things on camera...but in front of a live camera where it's one on one and they have to be themselves...it can be difficult. Much easier to pretend to be someone else. :)

I went to get validation. Its a co workers husband who works at Lucasarts(and working on the doomed Crystal Skull game). He talked to someone who saw the test screening in LA. Naturally everyone in his studio is disscussing the reviews.
It's a fun movie apparently, not as bad as Phantom Menace but has a lot of cheesiness. Again, I don't really care. Raiders is my favorite movie of all time. So curse me all yo

15 Minutes of Behind the Scenes Footage from Indiana Jones! And a Featurette! (http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4872&Itemid=99)

See director Steven Spielberg in action…(Mr. Lucas, walk away)…Harrison Ford practicing with his whip, Shia and his switchblade, Cate and her sword, stunts and much more in the 15 minutes of behind the scenes footage we have from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! Plus a new featurette entitled "Bringing Back a Classic!"

His exploits are the stuff of legend and his name has become the very definition of adventure.

Indiana Jones.

The whip-toting, punch-packing, snake-hating, globe-trotting archaeologist with a fedora is back on screen in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” debuting worldwide Thursday, May 22, 2008.

This newest adventure begins in the desert Southwest in 1957 – the height of the Cold War. Indy and his sidekick Mac (Ray Winstone) have barely escaped a close scrape with nefarious Soviet agents on a remote airfield.

Now, Professor Jones has returned home to Marshall College – only to find things have gone from bad to worse. His close friend and dean of the college (Jim Broadbent) explains that Indy’s recent activities have made him the object of suspicion, and that the government has put pressure on the university to fire him. On his way out of town, Indiana meets rebellious young Mutt (Shia LaBeouf), who carries both a grudge and a proposition for the adventurous archaeologist: If he’ll help Mutt on a mission with deeply personal stakes, Indy could very well make one of the most spectacular archaeological finds in history – the Crystal Skull of Akator, a legendary object of fascination, superstition and fear.

But as Indy and Mutt set out for the most remote corners of Peru – a land of ancient tombs, forgotten explorers and a rumored city of gold – they quickly realize they are not alone in their search. The Soviet agents are also hot on the trail of the Crystal Skull. Chief among them is icy cold, devastatingly beautiful Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett), whose elite military unit is scouring the globe for the eerie Crystal Skull, which they believe can help the Soviets dominate the world ... if they can unlock its secrets.

Indy and Mutt must find a way to evade the ruthless Soviets, follow an impenetrable trail of mystery, grapple with enemies and friends of questionable motives, and, above all, stop the powerful Crystal Skull from falling into the deadliest of hands.

Interesting, does it perhaps suggest connections? Also I can personally confirm the Ark theme does occur in the track "spell of the skull" interesting indeed...
