Call of the Crystal is very eerie. These tracks are awesome, not really in the same vain as the other Indy soundtracks but still totally John Williams.
not in the same vain as other Indy Soundtracks?...Mutt's theme was very Young Indy in Last Crusade. :indy:

Reliving the adventures before I go see the new one. Unbelievable that I never owned an Indy flick until now.
And.
Harrison Ford rocks.
The man should be made into President of the World, in my book.
And I know people get on him about how he's aged (OMG!! he ages...! WTF?!!He ages??!!) But the dude has aged incredibly well.

Filmmakers and Entire Cast of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4878&Itemid=99)
The IESB has been supplied with on-set video interviews with the filmmakers and the entire cast from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull!
Interviews include Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Karen Allen, Jim Broadbent, Ray Winstone, John Hurt, John Williams, Frank Marshall and David Koepp!
The interviews were shot on-set during the filming of the latest Jones installment!
His exploits are the stuff of legend and his name has become the very definition of adventure.
Indiana Jones.
The whip-toting, punch-packing, snake-hating, globe-trotting archaeologist with a fedora is back on screen in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” debuting worldwide Thursday, May 22, 2008.
This newest adventure begins in the desert Southwest in 1957 – the height of the Cold War. Indy and his sidekick Mac (Ray Winstone) have barely escaped a close scrape with nefarious Soviet agents on a remote airfield.
Now, Professor Jones has returned home to Marshall College – only to find things have gone from bad to worse. His close friend and dean of the college (Jim Broadbent) explains that Indy’s recent activities have made him the object of suspicion, and that the government has put pressure on the university to fire him. On his way out of town, Indiana meets rebellious young Mutt (Shia LaBeouf), who carries both a grudge and a proposition for the adventurous archaeologist: If he’ll help Mutt on a mission with deeply personal stakes, Indy could very well make one of the most spectacular archaeological finds in history – the Crystal Skull of Akator, a legendary object of fascination, superstition and fear.
But as Indy and Mutt set out for the most remote corners of Peru – a land of ancient tombs, forgotten explorers and a rumored city of gold – they quickly realize they are not alone in their search. The Soviet agents are also hot on the trail of the Crystal Skull. Chief among them is icy cold, devastatingly beautiful Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett), whose elite military unit is scouring the globe for the eerie Crystal Skull, which they believe can help the Soviets dominate the world ... if they can unlock its secrets.
Indy and Mutt must find a way to evade the ruthless Soviets, follow an impenetrable trail of mystery, grapple with enemies and friends of questionable motives, and, above all, stop the powerful Crystal Skull from falling into the deadliest of hands.
God I wish it was the 22nd already.

They can bash Lucas all they want if they're still upset about the SW:PT but technically this is Spielberg's movie just as much as it is Lucas. And I think that Steven and Harrison know whats best for the story and characters better then grumpy old George, who didn't have nearly as much influence over this film as he did on the Star Wars Prequels. Bottom line...I trust Spielberg as a voice of reason over Lucas who definitely had some off the wall suggestions.

Haven't seen this posted yet.
Lucas: 'Indy 5' a Possibility (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,356282,00.html)
George Lucas tells me it’s more than a strong possibility there will be a fifth "Indiana Jones." He says that he and director Steven Spielberg have left the door open for a sequel to "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."
Lucas, looking dandy with slicked-back gray and white hair in a snappy tuxedo, was a guest Thursday night at Paramount/DreamWorks’s party for "Kung Fu Panda" at the 61st Cannes Film Festival.
The swell event was set up on the pier across from the Carlton Hotel, where the studio spared no expense recreating sets and treating guests to haute Chinese cuisine. There was even one of the 40 pandas from the publicity stunt the day before, dancing in the crowd to Carl Carlton’s old hit "Kung Fu Fighting."
Lucas had a lot to say about the new "Indy" and its future.
"I haven’t even told Steven or Harrison this," he said. "But I have an idea to make Shia [LeBeouf] the lead character next time and have Harrison [Ford] come back like Sean Connery did in the last movie. I can see it working out.
"And it’s not like Harrison is even old. I mean, he’s 65 and he did everything in this movie. The old chemistry is there, and it’s not like he’s an old man. He’s incredibly agile; he looks even better than he did 20 years ago, if you ask me."
Lucas says he’s not concerned about early mixed buzz on "Crystal Skull."
"This movie is the exact same experience as the other three were. The difference is, the novelty of discovery is gone. I get worried when I hear fans say they’re expecting something different that will change their lives. This is 'Indiana Jones' just as you remember him."
But that’s exactly the gamble Spielberg and Lucas took with reviving their icon. Expectation grows into a frenzy and then no one in that frame of mind can be satisfied.
You already can see this with "Sex and the City: The Movie" and it hasn't even opened everywhere. Fans and even some critics want some transcendent experience. They almost seem upset that all they got was … "Sex and the City."
Lucas has been here before, when he revived and extended the "Star Wars" series. The build-up to the release of the fourth installment (aka now Chapter 1), "Phantom Menace," was huge until it reached a fever pitch. Then, almost before it could be absorbed, "Phantom Menace" became the target of scorn from fanatics. Computer-generated character Jar Jar Binks was public enemy No. 1.
But "Star Wars" continues to thrive. In August, Lucas says, he’s releasing an animated 90-minute "Star Wars" movie to theaters via Warner Bros. called "Clone Wars." It will be followed in September by an animated series on the Cartoon Network and TNT.
"No one wanted it," he told me. "Every studio rejected it, including Fox, and I’m very loyal to them. They have right of first refusal. Eventually I brought it to Warners. It’s the first time that three components of the studio have acted together. It’s very exciting.
"But the story is that everyone said, 'No one gets this. It’s just … 'Star Wars.'' I said, 'That’s right, It’s just 'Star Wars.' Just like this is … 'Indiana Jones.''"
Oh, yes, and by the way: If "Crystal Skull" breaks records when it opens on May 22, Lucas could wind up having his name on a fourth title in the all-time box office top 10 (it would be Spielberg’s second).
"But these movies — the 'Indiana Jones' ones — were never big hits right away. They were always slow starters that built up to big numbers," Lucas insisted.
I don’t think that will be the case with this one. And the notion that a sequel already is playing around in his head should only fuel the heady numbers about to be posted.

something tells me it would be "INDIANA JONES And the..." at the least it'll be "RAIDERS OF the..." or something. Paramount isn't stupid enough to do something like that. If Indy was at Fox, maybe, but not Paramount.
If it's "Indiana Jones and the Passing of the Torch" I can get behind it, mainly cuz... well hell its indy but its also the final 5th film that Lucas said he wanted to make back in the day. I like the idea. Not the best, but could be very entertaining.

He's probably about 35 now. I don't think he would have the same effect.
It wouldnt be the same, but it would be cool. Indiana has to go to Hong Kong for some reason, and his contact there...Short Round, who's now either a successful buisness owner or archaeologist himself. Or maybe they had a falling out of some kind, after ToD, and that's why he wasnt in Raiders. Indy benched him, because it was too dangerous, or he got hurt (shot maybe) and didn't let him come on adventures with him anymore, making Short Round the Nightwing to Indy's Batman.

While ToD is, in my opinion, the weakest of the three, that's really not saying much, as it's still an excellent movie, just not quite on the same level of excellence as the other two. Short Round was fantastic though, and my favorite side kick character from any of the movies, except maybe Sean Connery.

I don't like the idea of having shia replace indiana and continuing the franchise , Shia seems to young and small to play the type.

It's got some typed parts, but it's handwritten for the most part. It also has sketches, photos, and drawings. And no it doesn't look like the YIJC diary, but inside it explains that the diary has a new binding b/c of the old one corroding and has a pic of the old cover. It's really cool.

What movie is actually necessary? I mean really, we dont NEED any movies for any reason. And I dont see how it's infuriating to believe that a guy who slept around as much as Indy obviously did has at least one kid out there. And this isnt the first time the idea has even been used...in Young Indiana Jones he had a daughter, and grandchildren. And the marraige also isnt anything that far fetched, as he seems to have already pretty much settled down, and she really is the best fit for him out of all the love interests we've seen

unneccessary in the sense that this really adds nothing to the overall story or character (not that I agree or disagree with that sentiment in regards to this film or the original post... i'll withold judgement until I see it).
But Blair Witch Project 2 was an unnecessary sequel, which I'm sure you'll agree. The upcoming sequel to Donnie Darko is entirely unnecessary. The new prequel star wars films were 'unnecessary', since they didn't really add anything worthwhile to the original films. I'm sure you can think of some more examples. Sure, all films are equally 'worthless', and we don't 'need' any of them (arguable, as a culture we need mass entertainment), but in the context of film as an entertainment medium, I think its fair to say some movies aren't worth bothering with, or worth more than other films.
I don't know if this current film will fit into that category, but for some of us, seeing an awkward marriage scene and Indiana's lost son probably isn't very interesting... then again, you wouldn't have thought seeing Indiana Jones' dad would be interesting either, and that turned out to be awesome.

Screw this unnecessary talk crap! The people wanted this movie for years, so screw that. Also, it seems the movie is getting good buzz at cannes.
Cannes crowd’s verdict: ‘Indy’ is a hit
By Charles Ealy | Sunday, May 18, 2008, 09:00 AM
CANNES, France — The people behind “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” may have feared the Cannes snakepit, but it looks like they’re going to escape without a serious bite.
Sunday’s world premiere was met with roaring approval, and any critical sniping will be deftly deflected by adoring audiences.
The new Indy, released by Paramount, is expected to be the biggest summer movie of the year in the U.S., and those expectations should be easily met.
The flick has much of the humor of previous installments, as well as breakneck action sequences that will make you keep reaching for popcorn.
Trade publications in Cannes had been predicting a possibly rocky reception, partly because bloggers who saw exhibitor screenings back in the States questioned its pacing. Also, another blockbuster that premiered in Cannes a few years ago, “The Da Vinci Code,” was savaged here, despite going on to success.
There were plenty of justifiable reasons for such savagery toward “The Da Vinci Code.” There are few reasons for such a reaction to the new Indy.
The scene outside the Palais before the premiere was chaos. The streets were packed with onlookers out for a stroll on a beautifully sunny day. Dozens of journalists from top-flight publications — with the highest credentials possible for festival access — were shut out of the theater until just before the movie started. And many had to sit in uncomfortable, fold-down seats at the ends of the aisles.
Only those who arrived more than 30 minutes early gained decent seats.
Fans of the Indy series will enjoy the reunion of Harrison Ford and Karen Allen, as well as the introduction of Shia Labeouf. Labeouf, who has stunts involving knives, vines, swords and motorcycles, is believable as the naive sidekick who is drawn into Indy’s wild world. Cate Blanchett, as usual, is pitch-perfect as a villainous Soviet parapsychologist.
There’s not much point in saying more about the movie. It would just give away the plot - and any possible surprises.
For the record, George Lucas has been known to fib to help promote his movies, and he did so Saturday during an interview with reporters. It was a Santa Claus-like fib, well-intentioned and designed to protect a surprise. So, although it was reported here, it’s probably best not to be a spoilsport.

There seems to be such a big deal over this....I could care less what these people think either way. But I think it's really sad that a movie has to sit before these guys as if they are something important. Self-important critics are the biggest waste of human flesh in the industry.

Heres a story that matters...to me at least...because Indy4 should remind us all what it felt like when we watched these movies when we were this young...
From USA TODAY:
Youngest critic deems 'Indiana Jones' sequel 'tres bien'
CANNES, France — "Tres bien."
That is the first review from 12-year-old Pablo Schmit as he exited the theater after the first public screening Sunday of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, at the Cannes Film Festival.
His mother, Cecile Alcais, 38, translated: "It's very good."
Then added, "But Harrison Ford is too old now. Harrison is the hero, but he may be too old. (My son) prefers the young guy." That would be Shia LaBeouf, who plays Jones' sidekick, Mutt.
As for mom, who works at a small film production office in France, "I liked it, very fun."
The best part was for Pablo, though, she said: "He's going to tell all his friends he was the first French boy to see the film. He's very happy."
The nearly 2,000 people in the first showing were mainly journalists, and as the theater lights darkened, some men in the balcony began singing the theme song.
To the relief of filmmakers, there were no boos at the film's conclusion — a good sign considering the discriminating Cannes crowds. There was a round of applause, but no standing ovation, mostly because every reporter was out of his or her seat before the credits rolled, racing to file a review or squeeze into the news conference with the stars and filmmakers.

I guess a fifth one is very possible.
Spielberg eyes more Indiana films (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7406990.stm)
Steven Spielberg has said he is happy to make another Indiana Jones movie if fans enjoy the long-awaited fourth film, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
The director is in Cannes, joining stars Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett and Shia LaBeouf at the film's premiere.
Asked at a press conference if he wanted to make another film, he said: "Only if you want more.
"That's why we made this Indiana Jones. We'll certainly have our ear to the ground to hear what happens."
"That'll decide were we go from here," Spielberg added.
Reporters got to see the film - the first Indiana Jones movie in 19 years - at an official screening ahead of the premiere.
The BBC's Mark Savage said it was "very much in the style of the first three films". "The set-piece stunts are second to none," he added.
"There's also a sly acknowledgement of internet rumours that that Shia LaBeouf will take over the franchise," he continued.
Early reviews have been mixed - British movie magazine Empire's Damon Wise said it was "a slick, fun film", while the Daily Telegraph's David Gritten called it "undeniably creaky".
But leading man Ford, now 65, said he was not afraid of what critics thought.
"I expect to have the whip turned on me. It is not unusual for something that is popular to be disdained by some people and I fully expect it," he said.
"I'm not really worried about it. I work for the people who pay to get in - they are my customers. "My focus is on providing the best experience I can for those people."
Ford, who made his debut in the role in 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark, described the new film as a "celebration of the movies".
He added that he was delighted to see it create such a stir at Cannes, with fans holding up signs saying "need Indy ticket".
"I'm delighted that we have the opportunity to release a film now because for a couple of generations, young people have just been seeing this on DVD at home," he said.
"Now we get the chance to see it in the cinema, where it's meant to be seen. I'm very excited about that."
The film opens in 1957 at the height of the Cold War, and that the hero is on the search for a solid gold skull stolen from a lost city and guarded by the living dead.
Spielberg tried to make the film using old-fashioned B-movie techniques, rather than computer graphics, in keeping with the original trilogy.
Scenes in the trailer show Ford make a joking reference to his age.
"This isn't as easy as I remember," he quips.
The movie has its UK release on 22 May.

*sigh* I like Shia but I don't want to see "The Adventures of Mutt Jones." Here comes Lucas to pimp out the Indy series just as he did Star Wars, now he has Spielberg following him. Lucas will milk a cow's utters until they have dried completely out and turned to dust.
And it's a damn shame. He just doesn't care anymore about the credibility of his films or the people who actually do care and work hard to make these movies. It's just unfathomable to me that someone could willingly degrade himself and his legacy with half baked sequels, obvious soulless cash grabs. No, It sickens me and I honestly hate lucas for it.
That said, Last crusade already ended Indy on a weaker note than it deserved. This film won't do much more harm than that did, I suspect... so whatever. I'll watch knowing what to expect.

If I were YOU, I'd go expecting a good movie. There are 10 times more positive reviews than bad ones, and it seems to me you're only looking at the bad ones. If you just WANT this film to suck, I suggest you stay out of the theater. I mean whatever happened to just going and enjoying a movie. The crux of Indy movies is that one sequel is never supposed to be better or worse than another. They're always self contained, stand alone films, starring the same man. Each one is a different experience, instead of movies like Star Wars, where you have to watch them all to get the core experience. There won't be anything different about this one. If you want it to be different, then you don't want an Indy movie, you want something entirely different.

This film always had a critical bullseye on it's back, no denying that, Some critics have been salivating at the prospect of trashing old man Jones and the "Anti Christ" Lucas. The opposite goes for TDK, it's "Dark and edgy" so the critics will fap to it, plus the guy playing Joker is dead so no way they trash it.

This is one of my favorite things about the series and is also a huge reason why Indy 5 should not happen. Anyone who's read the spoilers knows why. The ending to KOCS seems like a fitting one to the series.

Hey guys! How are you?
I've attended the film festival earlier today and I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull today. Yikes.
Here's the thing. I'm not an Indiana Jones fan. I'm 32 years old but I have never even seen any of the sequels but I did see the first one many, many years ago. I attended this event at the behest of my adamant publicist.
I think this film fell flat. The set pieces were very dull and lifeless. Almost like they were tweaked to accommodate Harrison Ford's age or something.
I was also confused at times but I think it's because of canon references that I didn't get but the dialogue was bland. Harrison Ford had a few great lines that worked and million that didn't.
This film did very little to make me want to purchase the new high definition DVD's they are trying to push or even revisit the other films so that I can understand the canon of the series.
Of course I want to throw in the disclaimer that I am NOT a fan of the films so this could have worked against me when it came fully enjoying the film. Though I must say once more that the film had no life whatsoever. As a standalone film it didn't work. Just my opinion.

Awful vague thing to come on here suddenly and say for someone who isn't a troll. Oh and by the way, a guy from Chicago in France at the behest of his publicist, suddenly coming here to tell us about this?
........
That's it, screw the internet. I can't trust it anymore when it comes to this film. I'm waiting four days and watching it myself and making my own assumption.

That review is more of a review I can get behind. (I didn't like Harry's as a review).
He actually described the movie without spoiling anything major, and metered the pros and cons of it without getting too fanboyish or too ew Lucas on it.
I can see where he would hate subplots not getting wrapped up enough, and I'll probably hate that myself, but it sounds like its something that I'll be able to live with.
At the end of the day, I want a good Indy film, and that sounds like what I'll be getting.

The reviews are mostly positive, but one thing that I'm worried about.......
Indiana Jones was the last bastion for practical effects. Most of the complaints of the new movie, have been in the realm of the new digital world of Lucas.
Digital effects wouldn't normally bother me, but as Lucas showed in the Star Wars prequels, and Star Wars special editions, the guy has absolutely no discernment on when to use them, and when not. Lucas is the heroine addict of special effects. Now I realize he has Spielberg to tame him some on this, and Spielberg being a far superior director will hopefully have intervened where George cannot help himself.
But adding to this, Indiana Jones was always suposed to be a flashback to those old Republic Films Saturday morning serials. There wasn't supposed to be flashy special effects, it was real explosions, real props, real coordinated fight scenes, and real stunts! If I see a CGI Indy swinging on his whip in this film, I'm going to go nuts!
CGI has become a great tool for film makers, although it has really killed the artforms of stop motion animation and traditional cell animation. People like Lucas have done more to kill those artforms and artists. I understand the need for progression and realism in film making, but CGI has often become a crutch for lazy film makers like Lucas. Look at Peter Jackson, he could have created all of Middle Earth as one gigantic CGI world against a green screen, but he didn't. He used a combination of CGI, along with scaled models on different scales, to provide an added level of realism that quite frankly is totally abscent from the Star Wars prequels.
Again, my complaint is not against CGI, but against people like Lucas, who have completely lost touch with the people who actually pay money to see the films. Hopefully Spielberg is smart enough not to fall into that trap, but he certainly did in the ET special edition, so he's not infallable.
Joker
05-18-2008, 10:52 PM
I agree. I'm hoping Speilberg pushed towards more practical stuff, but from the trailers, it looks like there's alot of CG...and poor CG at that.

Here's an article from firstshowing.net about the use of CGI in the new film.
Just when I thought that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull didn't have any major buzz (http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/03/26/more-indiana-jones-iv-photos-are-you-getting-excited-yet/), not only does it make one hell of a comeback by topping the Most Anticipated Summer 2008 Movies (http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/03/31/the-moviegoers-most-anticipated-summer-2008-movie-still-indy-4/) list and debuting a new TV spot (http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/03/29/new-indiana-jones-4-tv-spot-whips-into-action/), but now another solid article that's guaranteed to generate even more buzz hits. Our friends at io9 (http://io9.com/374266/indiana-jones-will-be-mostly-cgi+free-designer-tells-io9) caught up with production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0245596/), who built all of the sets for Indy 4, and heard some very interesting things - primarily that they built almost all of the sets and there really isn't too much CGI.
Dyas is one of today's phenomenal production designers, currently with X-Men 2, Superman Returns, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and Indiana Jones 4 under his belt. You can see a gallery of some of his work over at io9 (http://io9.com/374266/indiana-jones-will-be-mostly-cgi+free-designer-tells-io9). However, let's get back to the topic at hand. Dyas told io9:"There really wasn't much CGI. We built all the sets… We built all of the [moving stone staircases, converging stone pillars and other pieces] so it was very nice."
He also goes on to say that they used little to no greenscreen. However, I wouldn't be so quick to jump on a quote like that and say there really will be no CGI in the end. I even remember hearing from Spielberg that the reason the trailer was so late was because they wanted 100% finished scenes and they weren't ready until recently. Peter from SlashFilm (http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/03/31/indiana-jones-4-production-designer-says-film-is-mostly-cgi-free/) calms our nerves, however, saying that "Spielberg estimated during production that 30% of the visual effects would be CGI, but mostly for elements such as backdrops and rotoscope removal of the visible safety wires during stunt sequences. Apparently, the finished film will contain only 'a couple of hundred' effects shots, compared to Michael Bay's Transformers which featured almost 650 effects shots or Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 which featured almost 1,000 effects shots."
I really don't think that having CGI, albeit minimally, in a movie like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a bad thing. I do think it's a good thing that they used the least amount they could, because I think it will stay truer to its roots, but if CGI is used in the right ways, I don't imagine it would be that detrimental. However, I do commend Spielberg for choosing to mimic as closely as possible the techniques they used to film the first three Indiana Jones movies. I hate it when sequels have a disconnected feeling because one decided to use CGI as opposed to the original methods.
Although the first few trailers haven't been overly exciting, the first intro bit in the last TV spot (http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/03/29/new-indiana-jones-4-tv-spot-whips-into-action/) did make me feel a bit nostalgic. I'm very excited to see Indiana Jones return to the big screen again and I'm still holding out hoping that this will live up to the first three.

According to the article, there isn't a whole lot of CGI.

From the review, is this movie going to be like The Phantom Menace?
No. Just go watch it, and don't rely on reviews for your final judgment.

I just watched Indiana Jones and the Ultimate Adventure or whatever on History Channel. I would have preffered with more actual history and science and less "this is my skull that is thousands of years old, and for some reason named 'Max' despite that being a comparitively modern name...also, I'm totally bats**t insane."

Haha. I was thinking the exact same thing. Why does that crazy old hag even have that skull? It belongs in a museum!

Context, first Raul Julia was not heralded as "the new Brando" or "An acting genius gone to soon" was he ? plus TDK in all likelihood will be a tinsy bit better than SF to begin with.
Whoa, where'd that come from? I don't know if anyone's noticed, but I've kept my self low profile as far as the new bat business is concerned, and even though i have my gripes it does have some fantastic trailers etc... so I'm still intrigued to some extent. Anyway, i guess I've missed something. Carry on.

This might seem kind of random, but in which scene does Indy grab his hat just before a door closes in Raiders of The Lost Ark. A buddy and I are having a disagreement about when it occurs in the film.

Here's (http://www.etonline.com/news/2008/05/61793/index.html) a nice little interview with Harrison Ford, Karen Allen and Shia LaBeouf.
That was great ...
Its been YEARS since I have seen Ford so full of energy during the promotion of a film. He seems to light up when hes talking about Indy.

I think you guys are confusing the grabbing of his whip in the beginning of Raiders, the hat one was in Temple of Doom.

You know, every time I see one of these Indy moves it just gets me thinking, when will they make a movie of this sort where the mystical Holy Relic the adventurer is searching for doesn't actually do all that legends say it does? Wouldn't it be a trip to have the villains actually get a hold of a sacred object only to find out when they think they've won the blasted thing is just an inanimate object devoid of all magic whatsoever.

I agree. I'm hoping Speilberg pushed towards more practical stuff, but from the trailers, it looks like there's alot of CG...and poor CG at that.
It may be like the tunnel scene in Live Free or Die Hard. It was done so well that people thought it was CGI and it wasn't. We'll see.
