This isn't a cartoon. They've been developing these DVD's for a long time. It's going to be very high quality. It'll be nice when we see some stills but I would not be surprised if it was that detailed.

NOTE: The article says "DON WU" is doing the animation. I searched thet net with not luck to find some of his work. Anyone else have a link to his work???

Per http://www.comicbookresources.com it says Don Wu but maybe they're wrong and it's Don Woo...dunno.

I couldn't find a link to Don Woo either however there is a Dong Woo who did animation for Teen Titans.

WWC, DAY 2 - "ULTIMATE AVENGERS" PANEL, DVD IN FEBRUARY, 2006
by Hannibal Tabu (hannibal@comicbookresources.com), Staff Writer
Posted: August 6, 2005

http://images.comicbookresources.com/cons/wwc2005/marvel/sm/ultimateavengers_dvdposter.jpg (http://comicbookresources.com/news/preview.php?image=cons/wwc2005/marvel/ultimateavengers_dvdposter.jpg) With Wizard's Richard Ho moderating, Marvel's Craig Kyle and Lion's Gate Family Entertainment's Ken Katsumoto sat down with an over-capacity audience at Wizard World Chicago Saturday afternoon to discuss the first of a proposed series of direct-to-DVD animated releases featuring Marvel properties. Taking several pages directly from the books, "Ultimate Avengers" is slated to be the first release, in February 2006, based on the first six issues of "The Ultimates" by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch. The film will run 75-80 minutes with letterboxed format, will be recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1. sound and be aimed at PG/PG-13 audiences. With availability at all major retailers, the price point has not been settled on yet.

After the prerequisite "this company is great" material from both parties, they discussed the new studio MLG, where they used a "fantasy league" styled method of cherry picking talent to try and make the best product possible. "Doing these straight-to-DVD in an animation allows us to keep them as true as possible to the comics," Kyle said, "and keep the kind of emotion and look and feel you love from the books. I think we're coming very close, it's an exciting opportunity and it's for you guys." Katsumoto mentioned a meeting with Avi Arad where this first project was likened to the NBA All-Star game, with huge talents finding a way to work together. Look for Nick Fury (based on the Ultimate design), Black Widow, Thor, Hulk, Giant Man and the Wasp, among others.

"Avi's mandate was not 'make a good animated movie,'" Kyle said, "it was 'make a great movie.' We're all dying to deliver, you guys have huge expectations. We're doing our best to deliver. If they do well, there's no reason we can't continue. "

They wanted to get Hawkeye in the film, but Kyle said, "We couldn't give him the screen time. We just didn't want him to be in the background once, with an arrow, and everybody's like 'hey, Hawkeye!'" They also said the film would not stray too far from the source material, with the World War II segment as the opening scenes. "As close as we get to 'Saving Private Ryan,' we tried," Kyle said. "There won't be any of that 'ooh, he missed,' 'they all make it to shore' stuff. Broken glass, violence, romance. This is not Saturday morning stuff."

There will be some deviations, though. "There are moments of this film where you can grab a panel from the book and hold it up to the screen. To fill the time of the movie, we had to expand upon it and build upon it. We tried to grab specific shots." But some things just went too far, even for this treatment.

Don Wu will be doing the animation work on this film, and they called on the talents of many veterans of "Batman: The Animated Series" including Frank Parr on design, producer Bob Richardson, and Kurt Geida ("Return of the Joker") and Steve Gordon as co-directors. "Steve took Bryan's designs and opened them up so we could animate them," Kyle gushed.

The films will not all be "Ultimate" based -- "We're not planning to say these all synch up," Kyle said, and the "Iron Man" feature will be based on the classic Marvel Universe version. "There are places that we thought if a hero were to do that in a moving picture, it would be hard for the audience to come back to them. Victimizing women, it's just when you cross that line ... we try to make the smart choices. Everything in our film is motivated. I think you'll find as you watch the film that everything makes sense. We had a good script and we built from there."

Also, there's no need to look for the current American president in this film, nor any overt political statements. "We think that it has to go and be organic in the story," Katsumoto said. "There are some political aspects, more in the second film than the first, but we're not really trying to make a statement about today's affairs. We never move forward with that kind of intent, but if it happens that way, great."

They were also not willing to disclose voice casting, but promised there would be no stunt casting. "We found the best voices possible," Kyle said, "it needs to sound like Captain America, not Julia Roberts. We know we can never cast the voices as well as you do, we could never feel the explosions as much as you do. That's the beauty of comics. You finish the journey."

"Ultimate Avengers" is the first of eight proposed character-based films, focusing on Captain America as the through line (as well as in the sequel, based on Millar and Hitch's second six issues). There will be a second "Ultimate Avengers" feature in the second quarter of 2006, an "Iron Man" one (written by Greg Johnson and produced and conceived by Frank Parr) for the third quarter, and a fourth animated feature that they were coy about discussing. Of the latter, they did say that it is a lesser-known Marvel character, that it would be an origin story, and that the character is not an Avenger. After a considerable lag time, the film will be released for prime-time broadcast viewing with a partner they were not willing to disclose. The promotional plans for the project will ultimately include television ads and the like, but their first instinct was to bring the work "to the fans. If we haven't gotten our core, we haven't done our jobs," Kyle said. "Wizard's helping a lot, at each 'con coming, we're going to have a different one-sheet release that Bryan [Hitch]'s working on." They are open to toys and soundtrack CDs, but there's no concrete plans now, as they're still hiring the composer and orchestra to score this film.

Oh, I hope it is as detailed as that poster or at least something of great quality. I'm sick of DC cartoons like Justice League being done so well and Marvel does nothing.

I love Marvel and they need to have some really high quality cartoons. Don't get me wrong, X-men was very good and Evolution was good too but, we need something that just makes your jaw drop and gets high praise as JL did.

I just want more for Marvel's cartoons. As long as it's not crap like The Batman and Teen Titans.

That new FF cartoon looks like cheap japanicrap and it really ticks me off. They deserve better.

Time flew by because you forgot about it likely, however the powers that be have been busy developing it over at LGF and Marvel. The same quiet work is being done on the new Punisher video game for the XBOX360 which should be annouced on Aug 9th along with the sequels release date.

Oh hell yeah. I've always pictured Cap's voice as either the guy who plays Optimus Prime or the dad from Smallville. Something really deep and commanding and soldier-like and yet friendly and the family man and apple pie.

Man, 4 animated Marvel flicks in one year. I can't freakin wait.:D Especially with vol.2 coming out right after...Maybe that 4th character/movie is Moon Knight...Maybe even Heroes for Hire...or Shang Chi...Man, my mind is still reeling from this.:D

The Question

Yeah. The sequel will have a Skrull invasion. I hope they flesh out their shapeshifting powers more than The Ultimates did. And if there's a third movie or if they start puting this stuff on TV as a show, we could have them delve into 616 continuity. THINK OF IT!!!!!! We could have The Masters Of Evil. We could have The Red Skull. We could have Ultron. We could have Thor saying "ULTRON!!!!! We would have words with thee!"

But, that's the cast of Ultimates. Hopefully they'll get rid of the only part I hate about Ultimates. Ultimate Cap being a dick. And there is only two movies worth of story in Ultimates. If they make more movies or if this spawns a TV show they'll go into 161 continuity.

Lions Gate nabs Marvel DVDs

By Brett Sporich
Marvel Enterprises Inc. has chosen Lions Gate Entertainment to develop, produce and distribute at least eight direct-to-DVD animated features, focusing first on such comic book characters as Captain America, the Hulk, Thor and Iron Man, Marvel chairman and CEO Avi Arad said.

"We have a unique opportunity to develop these characters and others through DVD in a way that will further solidify the Marvel name as one of the pre-eminent brands in entertainment," Arad said.

Marvel controls a library of more than 4,700 comic book characters, some of which have been developed by major Hollywood studios into live-action films like "Spider-Man."

"Spider-Man" sold more than 6 million DVD units during its first week in release and remains one of the top-selling titles in the history of DVD.

"I think what is unique about this endeavor is that animation and live action don't live in the same space," said Glenn Ross, president of LGHE Family Entertainment. "Therefore, we have a fantastic opportunity to develop an animated brand beginning from Marvel's core comic book fan base and expand that out to a much broader appeal."

Some Wall Street analysts have said that this new line of animated home videos could possibly sell as many as 1 million DVD units each, an ambitious goal when compared to similar genres released on DVD.

Marvel and Lions Gate, teaming with the studio's production partner CineGroupe, are expected develop eight 66-minute animated features for release on DVD beginning next year.

Under terms of the agreement, Lions Gate will provide Marvel with licensing fees for character rights and fund all of the development, production, distribution and marketing for each title.

Marvel will spearhead creative development and production. "It will depend on the characters whether we will use CGI, classic Disney-like animation or high-end anime," Arad said. "For example, Iron Man would work best with CGI, while Blade works best with high-end anime, and the Hulk would work best using classic animation, making the character larger than life."

As is typical, after each animated project's home video window expires, the companies may exploit the movies in other entertainment media domestically and internationally, including television and video-on-demand, Roos and Arad confirmed.

Already Ultimate Avengers, Ultimate Avengers 2, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, and Hulk have been confirmed. I bet Thor will get an animated movie.

Well, from what I just read on the front page, wow, these are going to rock! Such a brilliant idea to have actual story lines come right from the comic itself, it's what I always thought should be done.

Too bad they couldn't make something that good for the live action movies that go to the big screen but, most of the filmmakers don't have the imagination to do that.

I hope it expands to the X-men and more than just Ultimate stories.

William15
08-09-2005, 04:53 PM
Which characters will be in this movie? I know Cap, will be and Hulk. Is SpiderMan also part of the Avengers? I hope that if everything goes well, it will be turned into a series and that eventually DC decides to make a serious cartoon about Batman and do comic stories... *Dreaming* I watch the German 'The Batman' but IMO the showed is aimed more at kiddies and I think it's to childish, with all the stupid Bat costumes and the 'flat' villains (By 'flat' I mean that they don't have the depth, that they have in the comic)

I used to watch all the Marvel cartoons from the nineties, which ones are released on DVD (Seasonboxes- I live in Holland so, I have to import)

Does anyone have pictures from the Daredevil cartoon that was planned for the HBO channel, but was replaced by Spawn?

The Question
08-09-2005, 05:51 PM
The Avengers team in the animated movie will be:

Captain America
Wasp
Giant Man
Thor
Iron Man

And in the first one they will be fighting The Hulk

The Sequel's team will probably be:

Captain America
Wasp
Giant Man
Thor
Iron Man
Quicksilver
Scarlet Witch
Hawkeye
Black Widow
Hulk

And they will be fighting a Skrull invasion.

This is me drawing from the particular comic issues they're basing the movies on. And if you're looking for a serious Batman show, try looking for Batman: The Animated Series on DVD. That show was tight!

SolidRoar

I watch the German 'The Batman' but IMO the showed is aimed more at kiddies and I think it's to childish, with all the stupid Bat costumes and the 'flat' villains (By 'flat' I mean that they don't have the depth, that they have in the comic)"The Batman" isn't aimed more at kiddies, it is for kiddies! The episodes are nothing more than long toy commercials. They panned the toys and even released them before the show started - some of the toys wouldn't work unless you turn them on while the episodes are being played on TV. Never supports crap like that. Like The Question said, get Batman: The Animated Series box sets, instead.

I used to watch all the Marvel cartoons from the nineties, which ones are released on DVD (Seasonboxes- I live in Holland so, I have to import) No season box sets, yet, unfortunately. You can find some DVD's, though. It would be nice to have all the Spider-Man animated series from the 90's on DVD. That show rocked!

Does anyone have pictures from the Daredevil cartoon that was planned for the HBO channel, but was replaced by Spawn? There was a Daredevil animated series planned for HBO instead of Spawn?!! Man, why don't studios have enough faith in the Man Without Fear? Just recently I heard about David Fincher's pitch for Daredevil that the studio refused (dumb@$$es!) and now this? He is so underrated, IMO.

This thing is going to ROCK!! It's like the best marketing idea they've come up with in a long time, making animated movies based on actual comic book story arcs! It's the best thing since Chewy Chips a' Hoy! It's supposed to have a simillar style to that of Hitch's and even though i'm sure they can't recreate it to the very last detail, i can only hope it will carry some of the realism Hitch is soooo good at.

Marvel does need some fresh air in their animation department. I think X-Men is undisputedly the best Animated comic book show ever made. It had the depth and the seriousness that i've never seen in a saturday morning cartoon. Batman would have to be the second best, next to or in front of Spiderman(90's) of course.

Is it me,or would Ed Norton make an awesome Daredevil?
He would've but he turned down the role once he found out he had to wear tights...

The Question
08-10-2005, 07:12 PM
Actually he wouldn't have to wear tights. Daredevil's costume was always made of leather. Well, they never said leather, but he made his origional costume out of his dad's old boxing gear and robe (leather and cotton), and when he mad ethe red suit he said it was tougher and more armored. That leads one to assume it was made out of leather.

Savage
08-10-2005, 07:14 PM
Yeah, I guess he meant metaphorically. The fact that he had to dress up in a costume was what scared him off.

The Question

True. But he could do Daredevil in a cartoon.

Savage
08-10-2005, 07:27 PM

I have a great idea for a Daredevil voice actor:

Benjamin McKenzie:

I'll believe it when I see it. Nothing I've seen from Dong Woo animation studios has been as complex as the pictures previously seen (gradiation of lighting, realistic physiology and facial features, detailed shadowing). All those things are easy enough to capture in a single image, such as a DVD cover for instance, but much more costly and difficult to maintain for multiple images per second.

If Dong Woo produces animation that really does look like that Captain America cover; great, more power to them, and we also get a kickass product. But I haven't really seen anything out of their animation house yet that proves they can do so. The point is, until we see screen caps or footage of some sort, none of us have any idea what we're really dealing with.

Was Up All,

I actually saw the trailer and the test footage at the Wizard World Convention that was here in Boston a few weeks ago.

(Spoilers Below)........

The animation looked really good, it's kind of resembles the animation from the Lady Death Movie (http://www.**************.com/news/articles/1448.asp)
but much tighter, higher quality with more defining black outlines.

The voice acting was pretty on point as well.

Cap's voice sounded exactly how it should, commanding, and authoritive but not gruffy. Nick Fury's voice was not what I expected though, but that's more of me imaginging his voice to have more of a Samuel Jackson voice (probably due to his resemblence in the comic) but it wasn't bad at all.

Some of the key elements from the book are toned down ,such as The Hulk eating people, and Giantman physically abusing Janet. The reason given for this was because to do that in animation once you cross a certain line it would be hard for these charcters to be brought back over to be cheered on as heroes.

BUT it was repeated by the panel that this is not a Saturday morning affair and is definitely PG 13! ( I did hear a few curse words.)

The cast was, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Giantman, Wasp, and The Hulk (He was green, with a grayish tint).

Hawkeye is not in the movie. We asked the panel why he wasn't there and they said because they didn't just want to have Hawkeye have a cameo with no significant role. They felt he deserved more then just a walk on scene. They did however state he appear in the next movie though.

The footage started with Cap fighting the Hulk on a roof top.
Cap looked really looked good doing all types of flips, rolls, landing hits and punches that had no effect on the Hulk.

Then they switched to Giantman smashing the Hulk into the side a 20 story building with his hand, the Hulk just laughs and comes back and knocks Giantman on his @$$.

Then they had a really cool scene with Iron Man flying through the city at a very high spreed. He flies up in the air then comes streaking back down and shoots his repulsor rays at the Hulk. The Hulk is dazed but knocks Iron Man out the air when he comes closer.

Then you hear the Hulk laughing again when suddenly a huge bolt of lighting comes from above out of no where and starts electrocuting the Hulk. The scene then switches to Thor hovering in the sky with Mjolnir. The test footage ended after that.

The trailer though was like 20 seconds long and really only showed character introductions, with Fury saying "Activate project Avengers". Not a lot of action like the test footage but more of and teaser.

It was annouced that the trailer will be on the release of the Fantastic Four DVD in December.

All in all I was really impressed with what I saw. It's about time that Marvel bounced back in the animation department, and by the looks of this thing they've done it in a BIG WAY.

The Question

Anyone think this will lead to a TV series?

Duneboy
10-26-2005, 11:16 PM
who knows. maybe, but I bet the animation quality will lower if it comes to doing a tv show. has anyone heard more of the upcoming FF cartoon? Supposedly there's a Wolverine one in the works now too.

Dr Doom

The new Wizard has samples of the animation in it. Basically looks like Hitch's but just a little less detailed.

Yes, for the love of God, somebody scan the images. If shots are already being released to the public, hopefully something will be up on Comicscontinuum soon then.

I was hoping for actual screen caps, but I doubt that even if the figures shown are simply character designs or promo art, they're probably not too far off. Congrats to Dong Woo! Now I'm wondering what the animation will be like.

ULTIMATE AVENGERS UPDATE

Lions Gate Entertainment has provided The Continuum with a first look at designs for Black Widow and Nick Fury from the Ultimate Avengers direct-to-DVD movie.

Steven Gordon, who is co-directing the film with Curt Geda, adapted the designs of Ultimates comics artist Bryan Hitch for animation.

Gordon also designed many characters and was a director for the X-Men: Evolution animated series.

During a recent convention appearance, Marvel Studios' Craig Kyle said that Nick Fury is a key character in the film.

"He's got to pull all these hotshots together and make them a team," Kyle said. "He's one of my favorites in the movie, actually.

"The design is very close to what it was in the Ultimates."

Black Widow is voiced by Olivia d'Abo.

Nice. They should have just kept him green. I LOVE the fact that Cap and Iron Man are going to look like their 616 counterparts.

Dr Doom

Actually, Iron Man isnt his 616 counterpart. All the characters are a mesh of Ultimate and 616.

Actually, only Iron Man is a real mesh. Thor is just Ultimate Thor without the beard, and Cap is exactly the same.
