Coolness, a fan art section!

Hi, guys, nameīs Eliseu Gouveia, a.k.a. Zeu and I thoght Iīd post here some of my stuff.
unfortunatelly, I donīt have many recent pieces, so I guess these will have to do for now http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

My apologies to those who had already seen them and.... hope you like them. http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Interesting costume designs.

How long does it take you to do one of those? I love the concept.

Hi, guys,
thanks for your posts, Iīm always eager for all the feedback I can get my hands on http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

iambilly81- Thanks for yuor warm welcome, this looks like a really nice place to hang http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

The Question - Thanks, The Question, you have a point, the mask looks evil and the way heīs pursuing Ironman, decimating his armour little by little doesnīt help; I wanted to draw a curbstomp, but I guess I went a little bit too far.

0neDisturbedSOB - Hi, 0neDisturbedSOB. Thanks, you ask an interesting question. I canīt say I remember how long this one took me (itīs been years since...), but what I do recall is that I did it in parts (Vision, Flash, Wonder Woman and maybe Captain America were all Photoshopped into the pic after. It was all done in pencils, no inks, so that saved time... but OTOH it also meant I lost more time doing the flats.
Judging by my production speed at that time, Iīd say it must have taken me around 6-8 hours

Kaod Er - Hi, Kaod Er, thanks. Yeah, at that time I was really bad at getting this internet thing right with the resolutions and stuff. I donīt know how I fixed it, but one fine day I woke up and I was able to upload cristal clear images. I still screw it immenselly (http://www.etherlair.com/gallery/publications////FOLDER_405f7ba2a6050/images/IMAGE_41c9712f69d78.jpg) from time to time, but usually Iīm aaalmost lead into believing that Iīve finally got it right (http://www.etherlair.com/gallery/publications////FOLDER_405f7cb372c13/images/IMAGE_4068afde81664.jpg).

Hereīs a little Gambit pic I did for a couple internet friends a while ago.
For some reason, my interpretation of the character seems to have disturbed them, but I could never understand why :D

You know, you may be onto something there
Wouldnīt mind drawing the female version of a couple superheroes out there
Any ideas? :)

Hi, Roma, Thanks, I have to admit Iīm a sucker for superheroines, Supergirl was the very first hero I ever saw in full colors. The hair, the cape, the boots.. , a recipe for an instant hook :)

Very interesting redesigns for the group battle. The Gambit looks very much like the Ultimate style.

Billy the gender switch is nothing new, I believe we had a contest for it last year. JLA, Captain America, Punisher entries, etc.

Zeu

Roma - Coolness, I have loads of ideas Iīm dying to try.
In my Supergirl worshipping, Iīve just realised Iīve never drawn other fan-favorite superheroines like Powergirl, Batgirl, Wiitchblade or Shadowcat.
I gotta make up for ther time lost. http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Kaod Er - Yeah, Iīve been working with Photoshop 5.5 since around 1999. Problem is that there is more to it than the standard 72 dpi resolution, I have to regulate the jpg setting (I usually go from quality 4 (low) to 6(medium), depending on space on my FTP and many times I end up with pics too pixelated in a 800X600 document.
Lately Iīve started hitting the mark more often than not, but once in a while....

Lionhart - Thanks, I must confees I have loads of fun reinterpreting existing characters.

So.............. who here likes videogames? http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks, BizarroMe1001, I felt kinda sorry for drawing GL blowing it up in the drawing afterwards, Ironman is one of my favorite redesigns.
My favorite is WW, next Flash, followed by Ironman and Thorīs uru hammer.

I was never really pleased with Superman (looks like he has a g-string) and Vision and I think Wanda was left unfinished; (always felt that something in her uniform was one pencil stroke away from going from "- Meh!" into "- Whoa!").

Sir Granite - Thanks, Sir. http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif Actually, Iīve been working in the industry for quite some time.
I provided the art for Image comicsī recently released Cloudburst (written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray) and Moonstone Books will release in september a 2-part mini-series drawn by me called Revenge of the Mummy (written by Justin Gray).
I regularly provide the pencils and inks for FC9īs monthly all-age title Genie (Writen by jim Keplinger) and General Jinjurīs superhero saga Charlatan (written by Gil Lawson).

Simply awesome!!!! I love it! I don't know if you intended to open this thread for questions, to show off, or both...but I have a question none the less. :D

What do you find is the best way to do an awesome action shot from start to finish. I find the only way I can ever get any sort of pose right is if I either copy off another artists work, or have them stand straight up (boring!). Any thoughts on that? (Oh yeah, and I'm already doing the whole "practice practice practice" thing!)

Kal El - Hi, Kal El. I donīt know if this is gonna be of any help but I use pretty much anything in my work (I have entire issues drawn over regular machine type paper); as long as itīs easy towork with and doesnīt ruin the linework, I use any materials available to get the job done. Initially, I used to recur to loads of picture reference for my buildings and I definitelly recommend it.
Or, preferably, drawing from life.
Look outside the window and try to capture on paper the building block in front of you.
In time, there are certain details that youīll learn to draw from memory and you wonīt second guess as much (a crucial notch in your M.O. when you have deadlines to kill... I mean maim.... I mean........).

Sir Granite - hi, Sir Granite.
Iīm strongly against copying another artistīs work in any circumstance.
Like I told Kal El, my advice is collecting picture references or better yet, drawing from life (most of the people that appears in my more complicated shots, man, woman or beast, child or elderly, are usually me - having a big mirror is a good thing).Gymnasts, sports events, anythign that has bodies in motion is immenselly helpfull in conveying the action on paper.
How I do is I usually take a regular machine type sheet and I draw the sketch of how I want the shot to look like. Awfull, hideous stick figures, it doesnīt matter, as long as it gives you an idea of how you want the characters placed, the persepective, etc.
Then you proceed to implementing it on your canvas, paying special attention to anatomy and perspective.
I can never stress this one little trick;

FLIP your canvas; regularly.

Use a mirror, a light table, I donīt care http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif
Itīs THE best technique to spot errors in anatomy and perspective.
A face may look all nice and dandy when you draw it, but the moment you flip it, you notice errors that werenīt visible at first.
Hope that was helpfull, anything else I can help you with, just ask away.
Be warned, though: Iīm no Adam Hugues or Serpieri, so I may still have tons of errors in my method as well.

C. Lee - Hi, C. Lee, thank you for your post and your warm welcome, I really like this little corner of the net youīve set up
I really hope you like my Infiniteens and canīt wait to hear your thoughts about it.

Drakon - Hi, Drakon, thanks
LOL
I have a secret to tell regarding those designs you see in the Bloody Sport piece. They were all made on-the-spot, no previous study, profile shots or anything. I just drew them in a way that felt "right". Lots of improvisation going on at the time, which, IMHO worked on several parts but didnīt on others (Supermanīs shorts).

Shampoo - Hi, Shampoo, thanks for your post
Iīm sorry my stile isnīt your bag, but maybe in time we can change that? http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif
I thank you too for your warm welcome, this sure seems like a very nice place.

Roma - Hi, Roma! Thanks, I too am a HUGE fan of Perez.

Zeu
08-11-2005, 02:59 PM
Thanks, RAMORE, youīre right.

Infiniteens doesnīt have quite as much detail on the linework since I had to come to a solution of compromise.

What youīve just seen was a 5-page submission I sent to several publishers (ultimatelly, it helped me land my gig at Image drawing Cloudburst).
I had 2 days to make the pencils for each of these 5 pages.
A walk in the park when compared to the much greater challenge that Infiniteens represented.

For Infiniteens I had to write, pencil, ink and colour 198-200 pages.
All by myself.
A recipe for a certain nervous breakdown.

I had to come to compromise, so, when time came for the artwork I decided to use a more relaxed lineart, investing most of my resources on the colors.

The reason for this choice was simple, Infiniteens takes place in a small new england town. Itīs a tale about growing up, about 4 young kids about to enter adulthood (Bev is only 19).

I needed to capture that feeling of purity ond inocence and so I invested most of the resources replicating the "naif" style of coloring.

Infiniteens has an underlying nature theme, featuring lots of natural motifs, the autumn leaves, the ocean, the growing shadows...

VERY NICE black and white art man - do you sell your own comics?

I'm a sucker for heavy darks and lights in monochrome artwork and great to see some sequential artwork in these forums for a change

Good-lookin thread my man

Keep at this and you'll go far dude - post some samples off to Darkhorse and some independents

I was accepted to darkhorse - but a genetic birthdefect effectively ended by comics career for a while as i went blind - but I recently got my sight back and i'm relearning to draw again

I got some art here in the Fan art contest and silevr sables thread stop by some time

Really nice stuff you have here dude:up:

Hi, deDIKnight,

Damn, thatīs really terrible, I canīt even imagine (and I donīt think I wanna try to http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif ) how it must be for an artist to lose his eyesight, Iīd quite probably kill myself.
My life IS my work, so I have nothing else to cling to if something like that ever happened to me.

Iīm glad youīve managed to turn it around, though, and I sincerelly hope that these first babysteps back into your previous artistic path will pay off with a major comback.

DarkHorse.... youīve lived the dream, man.

I could never get them to be the slightest bit interested in my work.

Awwwww:o - Thanks man for those kind words - I wont pretend it NOT been a long, hard, road back

I've been blind for nearly ten years on and off - and even tho i can see with one eye - i still aint seeing too good

I just had to believe that I still had artistic ability regardless of sight and having a sculpture degree, I kept at the scuplture thru my blindness

Nothing fancy - just a Head sized ball of plasticine and worked on it day after day and thru touch built up my visual memory again

So theres ALWAYS hope and i dont give up easily - i just had to keep the faith

But I'm doing fine - I probably wont reach the standard you have here for at least another two or three years yet as basically i'm at 5th year high school
level just now

Lol and at 40 - I'm the oldest (if not the best) high school artist here - LMAO

Darkhorse wouldnt accept you?

Jeez theyre Standards must be up their ass - this is quality material and If I started a studio tomorrow

YOU would be hired

I have seen their work on the starwars comics that i was hired to do - and I'm telling you - youre a lot better than some of them

Your work reminds me of mix of several 2000AD artists I used to know quite well

Nigel Dobbyn, Bryan Talbot and a bit of Alan Davis "DR & Quinch" art among a few others

Listen...I'm going to be looking for a few people soon who can work with me on a couple of comic projects

One Horror...One "Superhero" (even the superhero one has Supernatural/SF overtones - set in futuristic china)

You interested?

PM me sometime and i'll give you my Email and IM adrresses

I got a better piece of art over at silver sable's thread now
Its painted art - computer painted - I can only draw with the PC these days

Its kinda reminiscent of the really crappy romance novels my wife reads

Lol

But I gave it a comicbook superhero/horror twist

Good to see you here man - there aint enough sequential art and yours is the best i've seen here for a while

Thats an awesome piece of work dude-i love the 'oh s**t i gotta get outa here' look on the white haired girls face.

Just a few things though. I'm just trying to work out where you have your light source. The shadow of the guy on the stairs puts it coming from the red dude. However the light on the floor (which is probably my faviourite bit :) ) is a bit too far forward to be coming from that same spot. And the shadow of the guy at the back is inconsistant with both of them. (not to mention the girl in the front doesn't even have a shadow).

Also is the lack of shading on the girls pink boot intentional?

insurgo

Zeu

Thanks a lot, guys :)

Yeah, that light source is a bit too forward, still bugs me a little :(

Coloring Nadia was always a problem because of her color scheme. At some stage I decided to stop shading some of the pink portions of her uniform since it tends to make it heavy when Iīm trying to go for a more light feel.

I got the idea from watching pics of firebrigade teams where the yelow fluorescent bits are usually left untouched (The Infiniteens are a rescue team, not a combat unit :) ).

So, any Powergirl fans in here? :)

Writer: Jim Keplinger
Artist: Eliseu (ZEU) Gouveia
Cover: Juan Ferreyra
FIRST WISH pt 2, THE BURNING ARM OF XANDA
A powerful Djinn released in the desert to grant an advancing army control over the defending forces of a tiny Oasis. A Genie is released in Bagdad after a little girl is kid-napped off the crowded streets in the bazaar. In modern Small Town, America a boy (Jeffrey Allen) unexpectantly finds a Genie after being given a swirly by a group of bullies in a crowded shopping mall. In issue #2 we learn that genies aren't as 'all powerful' as some believe, and in fact have been traded like slaves by the ancient City of Atlantis. In modern times, the bullies continue to chase Jeffrey through the downtown streets, which leads to his casting of his first wish. Someone out there knows the Genie has been released, and he's determined to track her down and take her for himself.

Sorry for not repplying sooner, guys, I usually only check this thread when I have new goodies to upload... :(

Roma - Thanks, Roma, really glad you liked them :)

Grey Jeannie - Thanks, Jeannie, I use Photoshop 5.5 to colour my doodles (I know Iīm eons behind the rest of the guys who use the latest state-of-the-art Photoshop CS2, but hey,itīs the tool Iīm the most confortable with and Iīm a sucker for the classics....)
I do ink my pics before scanning them into the computer but initially I would just do very tight pencils and then adjust its contrast to look like the drawing was inked before coloring.
Check the pic below, itīs how I used to do it back then, directly from pencils-to-colors.

http://www.etherlair.com/gallery/publications////FOLDER_405f7ba2a6050/images/IMAGE_4068b69e92893.jpg

TheBatman1979 -Heya, TheBatman1979, thanks :) Nope, I never submited Silversparrow to any publisher, itīs just for the exercise of remmembering why I do comics: the fun of telling a story in a medium that knows no limits.
I have had it with submissions, I could probably buy a car with the cash I wasted all these years mailing packages with art samples over the years.

Man, four consecutive pages without drawing Jessie.... Iīm starting to feel the withdrawal effects settling in... 8)

Heya,

Thanks, ComicChick04.
Thanks, Forfeit.

Yeah, about the cliffhangers, it must have gotten under my skin somehow.

I grew up reading this newspaper where they would reprint old Flash Gordon strips and thatīs even worse than a page; I got 3 pannels every afternoon and that was it.
It was a fight when my dad got home with the newspaper at the end of the day, picture 5 kids fighting for a glimpse of that last page and then disappointed because theyīd have to wait for the next day to see what happened.

Oh my gosh Zeu it's been so long since i've been to this thread. I love this new series you got going on it's fantastic, gripping, unique, and in the infamous words of Paris Hilton "that's Hot":D anyways screw the big 3 if they won't do this print it and sail it out of your car ninja turtle style if you have to. Even image wouldn't take a look? i'm baffled man cause its good really really good:up:

Are these from your own script?

Zeu
01-25-2006, 06:55 PM
RAMORE - Heya, RAMORE, thanks, man, really appreciate your post and glad youīre liking my little adventure here. Stick around, the action is only starting :)

ArtistSean - Heya, ArtistSean, Silversparrow is all mine.

It all began one night, 2 years ago, when I was at the diner table asking myself if Iīd ever get a job drawing Supergirl (sheīs one of my favorite superheroes, the first colored comic I ever saw thanks to my sister who bought it many-many years ago).
Suddenly, it hit me"- Screw this, if DC wonīt hire me, Iīll create my own Supergirl!"
I started drawing one panel at the diner table every meal, without a script, just for the fun of venting out some creative fumes.
After a month, I had finished (and uploaded) all three chapters of Silversparrow. That was in the summer of 2003.
A couple months ago, I was going through my online portfolio and I noticed those pages.
They were horrible. Only pencils, no inks, horrible anatomy, no backgrounds.. the story was neat, though.
Pretty solid for a saga created on the basis of "What do I fel like drawing at the diner table today?.
So, I removed all those pages from my site and basically, what Iīve been doing these past few weeks is clean up those pages, ink (and color when needed) them, correct script inconsistencies, add new pages (Soaring only had 14 pages, Broken Wing had 22 and Skygirl has 12), etc etc.

iīve beefed up the script a bit on certain dialogues too, Major Evil in particular was unbelievably bidimentional compared to now.

The attention for detail? It actually comes from procrastinating, Iīm trying to come up with a cover of sorts for this lilīsaga and I just canīt seem to be able to find an idea for it.
So, I found that when Iīm doing those little doodles you call details I donīt have to face that white canvas. :p

I know what u mean about procrastination. I have been trying to get my idea for this comic down on paper for ages! and i only ever got the first page done. You know what its like when u have the WHOLE story in your head and you cant get it out. Its like going slowly insane lol I might just block it out and give it to Zeu, he'd do a way better job anyways lol

Is there anything you DONT do Zeu? You do line art with some mean shading, you do colours, you do writing and excellent dialogue.....im so hideously jealous lmao

Hey ComicChick, looks like we have competition for groupie status, there are more people posting in here now lol

Zeu

Thanks, Forfeit, I have to say the idea of Silversparrow brought to the silver screen tickles me a bit, I donīt even know who Iīd chose to portrait her.
Perhaps Evan Rachel Woods?
Nah, too old old, at her absolutelly best Jessie is a 13 years old who looks 15.

Heya, ComicChic04, Iīve fixed my site (actually, more like it fixed itself :) ), so all the links should be working perfectly now :)

And no worries, what I actually crave is comments and crits on the story itself, the characters, the plot, what I should have done and didnīt, who, (since officer Jones is too old and dead anyway) would be an ideal boyfriend for Jessie ... that sort of stuff :)

You know, youīre the very first person to notice Jessie and her sister Jenny in that page.

Initially, I just wanted a slugfest between all the capes to show that they went power mad (like they say, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutelly), but then it hit me:
These are Jessieīs memories, so she has to have seen it up close and personal.
Which of course put her right in the middle of one of these encounters. :p
