View Full Version : Being A Guy These Days

Does it seem like sometimes being a guy is a bit harder now than it might have been a few years ago?
With society deciding what a man should look and act like. If he doesn't care for sports then he's not a "real man"? Then when it comes to the opposite sex, he'll have to do something or look a certain way just for a woman to even be interested in him. And if a man isn't successful he's considered a failure by most people.
It just seems kinda hard to live up to certain standards in this society.

Ahahaha. :D
But, to be serious for a moment... I'd imagine being a guy has become a bit harder. Every commercial on TV is dealing with our inability to do this and borderline retardivity, we're the butt of every joke and a lot of guys take it in stride. Well, they take it without even knowing what's going on, but hey.

Well, men are worse off than they were 200 years ago. We used to be the pinnacle of human achievement. Now we're the butts of every woman's joke. Men in the media are constantly portrayed as complete buffoons. Our young boys are forced to live up to an impossible image of perfect manliness pushed on them by Action Man, He-Man and G.I. Joe. If a woman talks suggestively to a man in the workplace, she's flirtatious, but if a man talks suggestively to a woman in the workplace, it's sexual harrassment. Not only to men have to compete with other men for a life partner, we now also have to compete with vibrating pieces of plastic. The pressures of society and idealization of the masculine image forces men to shave every day, often leading to painful cuts and even burning. And if we complain about our situation as much as women do, we're considered sexist and narrow-minded. I'm sick of all of this! UP WITH THE MASCULIST MOVEMENT!
Please take none of this seriously http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

I agree that man in general has got it bad. Women ridicule men to the point where they can almost determine the fate of a man's well being. In the past year alone, I've read 9 different accounts of women lying about men raping them and having these innocent men thrown into jail. Its sick and sad that women will go to such lengths to further cement their power and ability in riducling and disgracing a man.
Men especially at the work place constantly operate in fear, making sure they dont say the "wrong thing" just in case they get sued for countless, stupid things.
Me being a 20 year old male, I'm on top of my game in all regards. I know how to keep myself in check and most importantly I'm not ignorant, so I wont allow myself to take any crap from any girl or anyone that may threaten my dignity as a young man.

Especially if you don't live up to standards of how a black man should look and act. If you don't act like a thug then you're not being real, if you happen to like a woman who's another race then you're a sellout, if you make bit of money and move to a nice neighborhood then you're not being true to yourself.
Then you have to worry about being judged by other races.

But what it boils down to is, most guys are guys at heart, regardless of you being the big popular jock dude, the geeky nerd, the quiet social miscreant, or what have you. We all carry guy tendencies somewhere within us, even if we believe ourselves to be the most sensitive, caring male ever in existence. And as far as the women are concerned, they more than likely want the caring sensitive guy, but at the same time, not some guy who will let her or anyone else walk all over him either. I don't know about that. Society has always put high expectations on gender roles. Back in the 50's, there was a VERY definite way that a man was supposed to behave and look and a showing of emotions was a big no-no. Certain careers (doctor, lawyer, anything that made a lot of money) were touted as the end all to be all and everything else was compared to those professions. That all started to unravel in the 60's with the freedom movement and today, men are allowed to express themselves as individuals much more freely without being judged by society quite as much. I'd say the idea of what constitutes a man is MUCH looser and encompassing today than it has been in the past (witness metrosexuals and emo boys still being able to fall under the category of "men" in this day and age when there is no way in hell they would be in the past, for example).
I think it's rather easier to be not only a man in this day and age, but to be be who and what you really are. There is a great deal more acceptability today than there was even 20 years ago over how a man can dress, act, talk and think, let alone what career paths he can take. Remember...commercials are trying to SELL you something and making you feel like you NEED something in order to be a complete person or a real man is one way of doing that.
So far, only one person's hit it on the head in this thread as far as I'm concerned:

For a while in my 27 years of existence, I cared about what people thought about me. I almost got expelled from my junior high because of it. I then made damn sure not to get in trouble again, so my freshman year I never said a word. As a result, I failed Speechwriting in that I wrote speeches but refused to speak them.
In my college years I did talk, and refused to play whatever "game" women wanted to play when I asked them out. I lost count as to how many times women said no, so I just fluffed it off and continued on with my life. I'm 27, single, and quite content with my one bedroom apartment though I would like a better job so I could move to Illinois for more TV coverage of the Cubs, Bears and University of Michigan football.

Well, they take it without even knowing what's going on, but hey.
Feh.
That's political correctness for you. Now-a-days, if you make fun of a woman (even if it has nothing to do with her gender) you're sexist. If you make fun of a minority (even if it has nothing to do with their race) you're racist. If you make fun of a homosexual (even if it has nothing to do with their sexual orientation) you're a homophobe. So now, the only person it is ok to make fun of is the white, straight, male. Watch any TV show, the main male character will be a white, fat, lazy, idiot who is always being shown up by his wife.

Just be yourself and ignore what others say.
That is the exact opposite of being a guy and you know it.

It is and thank you for starting this topic. I been saying this for a while to people but they look at me like I'm crazy.

I personally think guys these days are a lot more worried about how they're portrayed as. A lot of guys are afraid of saying the wrong thing and be called a homo

I used to worry what people thought but then I realized I'll just keep my friends around.. the ones who do the same stupid things I do and have no care for what happens.
There was this chic I was trying to go out with and she came out to hang out with me on my b'day.. but unfortunately I was drunk.. barely paid her attention cause I was too busy laughing with my friends and acting up at bar. Needless to say I haven't spoken to her since. I could have behaved if I wanted to but then I realized.. why?!

It is hard. If you don't do something "cool" then you don't have balls. Also, penis length is something guys needlessly worry about, only because of other guys.

Guy question: I took a girl out on a couple dates during the summer. I'm 17, and she is 19. She was very cute. She has a horrible drinking and smoking problem. She was drunk off her ass almost every night, and she smoked like a freak.
I dumped her because of the smoking/drinking problem. I knew I could've had her in the sack, therefore ending my virginity.. but I dumped her.
Did I make a mistake?

Not really... you can find another girl. You left a situation that sounds like a pain to be around.

that sounds like a good idea but he's choosing to leave the situation that just appeared to be dating and really nothing more. I'd hope that if he had more feelings for this girl that he'd stick around and try to help her.. but it just sounds like standard date and possible sex with no real strings attached.

It just seems kinda hard to live up to certain standards in this society. It's not about living up to a standard!
It’s about what you can do for yourself, and not what society can do for you!
For those of you young boys trying to blindly imitate those “guys” dressing up with oversize clothing!
According to the DHRT (Diamondhead research and technology) they’ll grow up to be just as clumsy as the cloth they wear while the ones dressing with more decent and tighter clothing will grow up with more equilibrium and stronger limbs
The point is …don’t be a follower!
If you don’t do what’s good for you at a certain age it might be to late later on
And no one will be able to fix your problem for you!
This was foreseen in the late19 century that societies evolve according to the way they behave and carry themselves!
A society with women walking around exposing their nude breast to the public without a care in the world is a society doom for extinction.
There’s certain degradation going on nowadays and a very high standard at the same time !
It’s up to you to educate yourself and to know which path lead to success or failure!

Of her killing a guy by shooting him in the head?!
I pitied her but at the same time I reluctantly thought that she deserved the sentence
I wonder if she still in prison?
Because this was around 10 years ago and she was probably executed by now!
Tell me if you have information!
And also, how about those rich “Hernandez” brothers who was supposed to be executed for the killing of their parents?
The media kept talking about these people and then you don’t hear the rest of it.
There should be a web site about these matters!

Of course. Look at the Minoans:
http://www.womanwisdom.com/store/images/st_minoanpriestess.jpg
Of course, archeologists believe that the civilization collapsed possibly due to the violent eruption of the volcano Thera, which then caused tsunamis which smashed all of Crete's ports and fleets, thereby destroying their properous trade routes and cutting off their grain supply along the shores of the Black Sea, naturally leading to famine.
Of course, the volcanic eruption was clearly the god's wrath upon topless women

Reminds me of this story i read about Marlon Brando. So this woman for some reason seems to believe Marlon's god or jesus or something and wants to kill then eat him. So somehow..he seduces her..has sex with her then the next morning calls some mental institution to come get her.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v62/Bane_Lily/dialog-vega3.gifI don't know what you guys are complaining about. Men have it easier in life than women. Men are most likely to get most jobs and get promotions. Men are most likely to get raises and will get them easier than women. Women mostly have to protest and FIGHT for raises and promotions. Men don't have to go through the hygenical and hormonal issues women have to go through every month. Men don't have to go through child bearing pain. Men can be promiscous and be glorified for it whereas women are looked down upon for it. Men don't have to do much to get ready to go out and to look good. Men don't have to worry about how the media influences them or portrays them since MEN RUN THE MEDIA.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v62/Bane_Lily/dialog-vega1.gifYou guys, how many women are getting breast implants and plastic surgery compared to men getting penis surgery and plastic surgery? It's obvious there is more pressure on women today and not on men.

What many people view as a " real man" is false IMHO. A real man takes care of his own. he treats women with respect no matter how others view them. He is a father(role model, teacher, friend) to his and/or other kids. He loves ( show and give love too) his wife greater than his self( if he has a wife). he has a job. his income has nothing to do with who he is as a man.......ect
i have more but i just thought i would share some of with you guys/girls......thx:) norm
Good points.
