It has been a while since I've posted here, but I've done a lot of artwork since then so I wanted to share. Below are a select few and a couple sequential pages. Thanks for viewing and I'll try to post fairly regularly.

Those are focking great, man. What did you use for the black/white ones? I liked the inked-looking feeling.

Do you have any coloured pieces as well?

I remember your stuff, I was starting to wonder what happened to your thread because it had some fantastic artwork in it. I love the Phantasm pic, and the sequentials are great.

Thanks for all the generous comments everyone...I really appreciate them all. I normally don't draw female characters too often, so last night I felt led to start this piece. I fashioned this Catwoman after the Jim Lee designed Catwoman in Hush...at least her costume anyways. I finished the piece today by completing the face and adding in the highlights with white ink and a crowquill pen. Hope you like.

My only complaint is that Selena's looking a little "thick" and stalky. I love the technique and "mood", but her body looks a little stumpy to me.

Great work, Jeremy. I have only one suggestion. Maybe you might want to trim up the waist a little bit. It would probably give her a great John Buscema-style look. But overall, fantastic!

That's some stunning work. The sequential is pretty fantastic...and I love the DD/Bats piece. Have you submitted any of this to DC? I sure as hell would like to see you do a run on Batman!

jrs2345
08-24-2005, 05:08 PM
I submitted 5 sequentials to DC at this year’s Wizard World Chicago, but I unfortunately didn't get a portfolio review from them. I did get a review from Aspen and Marvel. Both companies really liked my style and energy...I think they just wanted to see me work some more on my storytelling (mostly simplifying it and changing up camera angles more.) So, I'm going to concentrate on storytelling aspect more for the next submission samples.

Oh yeah, believe me...it would be a dream to work on a Batman book!

DC is run by morons, considering they didn't respond. Those are damn solid, the only page I have any problem with is page 4 of the Batman story. The first panel Batman's pose is really awkward, and I'm not entirely sure what he's supposed to be doing?

The Wolverine page looks great...woulda liked to see where it went.

You're really talented...love your stuff! It would be doing us a great injustice if you didn't post reguarly.

Thanks! I agree that the Batman pose you are talking about is awkward. He’s supposed to be whipping around to brace himself for another Killer Croc attack and to see where he went.

The Wolverine page is part of the Batman story...it is a crossover. On page 4 where you see the Joker being dragged by his collar and he is speaking to Batman, well he is saying "stop me if you've heard this one before...a man walks into a bar..." So then the next page we see Wolvie walking into a Gotham city bar. I'll post more of the sequentials when I finish them.

I'm illustrating this whole Batman/Wolverine story and I already have 11 more pages I can draw right now, so I'm a little behind.

Thanks again for the kind words and the critique...I really do appreciate it.

Brilliant! I love that transition between the pages. My girlfriend finds it particuarly clever not just for the joker, but because God knows how many stories open with Logan walking into a bar!

Now I see where you were going with the pose on page four - I think it looks awkward mainly because of the camera angle. I think that's a pretty hard motion to capture from that view, let alone make it look smooth.

Regardless, great stuff. The Cap picture is excellent. Is that the WTC in the background? And what medium is that in?

I'm probably going to re-work that panel, so hopefully it will (a) look better and (b) be easier to read storytelling wise.

I'm glad to hear that you like the transition from page 4 to 5. Eventually I'm going to have this whole story finished and inked...I'm just guessing that it will be a while until that happens.

Yes that is the WTC in the background. That Cap piece was the very first time I illustrated him, so I figured since he is so patriotic then I should create a tribute piece somehow. The medium is black watercolor on gray matboard. I also used a white color pencil for the highlights.

Wow your stuff is absolutly AMAZING. im really impressed with your pencils.
Thanks. I'm glad you like the pencils because it is hard sometimes for me to create what I want in pencils.

I also just wanted to say thanks to everyone else who has commented on my work in this thread. I read everyone's comments (at least twice) and I really do appreciate them all.

Here is a digital piece I did fairly recently of Batman.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/jrs2345/Batman-digital-paint.jpg

I very rarely do digital work, but I do like how it looks sometimes. I love concept artists like Ryan Church, Craig Mullins, and Feng Zhu...those guys are amazing! I'd like to get Corel Painter in the future because I think it would be a lot of fun, I just don't know how much I'd "really" use it.

Also, I forgot to mention that I sculpt occasionally too. It is a stress reliever for me and I really enjoy it. So the pic below is my newest Batman mini-bust in progress...

I'm a talented sculptor too jeremy (even tho I have half my sight these days) - and in my Professional opinion - you should hit up DC Direct to cast these in bulk and make yourself a wad mate

If DC pass you up on Batman - you can still make a killing as a Sculptor

I do - cos sadly my comicbook artist days are over

But scuplture is a different discipline and its my first love:)

I can't do it.

There is no way I can talk abou thow good you are without profanity.

Two attempts at constructive critisim to someone who's pencils I am not worthy to sharpen:

1) That Batman: Page four, panel one: Got the storytelling, see why people don't like the angle. WHat comes to mind for me is a olw angle closeup on Bats, hands holding Joker's shirt in the bottom right of the frame, (just the knuckles and some fabric, right below the Bat symbol, to establish that joker's in grasp,) but looking back, neck twisted looking for Croc, out of frame-left. Tips of the ears at top of frame.it--it dfoes change the action staging, but e panel 5 is slamming Joker into a wall, it should work. And I KNOW you can make that sweet. All those angle will fit your style.

2) If you go digital, make sure you get a tablet--even if it's just to play with. Get a used Wacom Intuos 2 off ebay. If you get used to a stylus, you may find you like the digital, but you'll never get rid of your ink.

Again, great work.

No wories. I think with digital there's an odd detachment from the mark on the screen not coming directly from the hand. And you can't turn the monitor like a sheet of paper or canvas. You CAN turn the tablet but it's disorientling. I tend to only go digital for coloring, prefering to still do black and white or pencil work the old fashioned way, then scanning. Now, if I could afford a Wacom Cintiq this might change (The Cintiq is basically a flatsceen, monitor that also respondes as a pressure sensitive tablet---how sweet is that?! I have dreams of aa day when Wacom is making brushes with fiber-optic filaments and tracking for multiple points of contact so that we can digitally paint with brushes that have bristles...we should have the technology to make that feasible in ten years or so...I suppose I should tell Wacom about this dream of mine, however.).

Anyway, when I go digital, I kick back in a recliner with my laptop on a lapboard, which for some reason is a quite comfortable way to work.

Anyway, I'm done rambling.

Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff... but you should repost the comp colored batman you did for last month's contest in here next to the black and white version in this thread.

CyberMonkeytron

And you can't turn the monitor like a sheet of paper or canvas.

But painter allows you to rotate and flip the canvas on the fly- so thats pretty handy.

As for the whole brush thing- i would suggest that you play around with the brush settings and customisable textures in photoshop and painter- you can get pretty close to real life....well at least awesome people can...

triem23
08-30-2005, 08:15 PM
Well, I've been wanting to get into painter, but I refuse to pirate software (It's a matter of principle), and I play around a lot with brush settings in photoshop, but it's still not the same. Hands-on, y'know?

Sure, it's nice. But I like your drawings the best, and the black/white pics. Like your Batman/Superman, I LOVE IT - that's why I e-mailed you for commission! ^_^

Honestly, you remind me so much of Jim Lee.. Next to him, you ARE my favorite artist. Your comic work is phenominal, and I don't know what you do for a living but you'd be a great artist at DC!

Have you ever worked for a comic company before, or anything like that?

I honestly can't remember the last time I have seen art that was so gritty and, I don't know...emotional. Every picture really pulls you in. Even out of all the big name artists out right now I don't think I can say that for any of them. As always, absolutely amazing work bud. I wish I could buy tons of prints from you :).

Thanks for the kind words man...they really do mean a lot to me. What you said helps inspire me to continue to develop my gift! Just so you know...I do have several prints of my work available to buy and they aren't expensive at all.

I'd love to have a pro comic out on the shelves today so those who like my work could buy it in a cheaper way too. I just don't know if that is where God wants to use me right now.

I agree with everyone here - you're an amazing artist, and I LOVE your style. I used to do Chinese painting way back in the day, and your work reminds me of it. Very spontaneous, full of motion, and you use your inks very well.

Well you might not know where you'll end up, but keep on drawing and the world will find a place for you. :)

I'm a little confused because why would I post something I didn't create? Maybe seeing my pencil scan I used as an underlay would help?

http://static.flickr.com/25/53846256_c10a266750_o.jpg

Now obviously once I began to work over this quick sketch in Photoshop, the piece changed a little. However, anything I post is created by me unless labeled otherwise (case in point, when I inked and colored over my buddy Drew's work, I was very clear about it.)

I would never take credit for someone else's work.

Dear god I love that. I'd even buy that in a shop.

That kind of Batman I like. I like how the symbol is sort of a "clasp & buckle" for the cape and cowl. In my Ultimate Batman story that's how it's all heled together. With a buckle adorned with the bat symbol.

Yeah, whenever I draw Batman ( at least lately) I tend to lean towards the small oval logo attached to the cape. I don't know why I've been drawing him that way though because the "screen printed" or "embossed" chest logo can look very cool too.

I'm digging your stuff big time, Jer'. Love the Ultimate Batman styled buckle. I printed out a bunch of your DeviantArt batman stuff in a small room. Using it for picturing my Ultimate Batman in my short story. http://superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7455396#post7455396

Thank you for the nice comment. I don't plan on inking them because I need to finish the other pages first (so I can get work.) Plus, if I were to ink pages, I wouldn't draw this tight. I would ink as I go to save time.

Honestly, I admire so many artists that I think they've all influenced my work one way or another. I even had an editor at Marvel say my pencils looked sort of like a Silvestri/Bisley combination. However, it is still me drawing:) I really only look at other artists' techniques and then see how I can apply them to my work. Plus, I use reference pics anytime I need to because I can't just draw everything off the top of my head. Maybe after years of drawing I'll be better, but for now I love flipping through oversized library books for reference.

Anyways, I hope that makes sense.

I wouldn't say lucky because I just waited in a line at Wizard World Chicago last summer to get my work reviewed by Marvel. They don't even pre-screen the work, you just have to wait in a line. So, you can do it too if you go attend a convention that Marvel will be at.

Consistantly great work as always jrs2345.

I would say that I'm not quite getting the bats change of poses in the first three panels. I understand hes getting ready for action or something, but it took him three- or five, depending on how you look at it (very nice) panels to go from standing (?) to the position he ended up in.

It would be cool aswel if you could make a stronger connection between the panels on the second page. I feel as though the wall that the killer croc is hiding behind sorta comes out of no-where. I think some of it is the way you have drawn the textures on the wall. It makes it seem quite bricky, when the only wall behind him in the first panel looks kinda smooth.

I think theres something a little off with the perspective on batmans cowl in the first panel of the second page. The back ear piece is a little high, and possible a little too far forward.

I am looking forward to seeing more though. I remember being impressed with the pages you did first time round, and i can tell that this is going to be even better :)

(compliment sandwich complete)*

Thanks. Below are some of the stuff I use...

Speedball India Ink
White ink or Pro White (I really like this FW Acrylic Artists Ink)
Faber-Castell PITT artist pens/Micron pens/Crowquill pens
Liquitex Acrylic paint
Strathmore Bristol (I prefer the smooth finish, but I'm currently working with the vellum finish to experiment)

I stick with round brushes...usually sizes 4 or 6 works for me. I might use a 2 for detail. I also have some old crappy brushes I use to create different textures with India ink. I never buy super expensive brushes...I just know I'd ruin them somehow.

Dollar store toothbrushes are great too for some splatter effects.

Hope that helps...let me know if you have anymore questions.
