In X-Men 3, Page plays Kitty Pryde, who popped up briefly in the respective forms of Sumela Kay and Katie Stuart in the first two films. “She can run through walls, and grab people and pull them through walls,” says Page, wrapping her hands around a mug of French roast. “Not very flashy—it’s kind of the humble defensive power.”

Her background knowledge of the X-Men story is limited, so she’s been reading up. Lord. I know this is mean, and I think she will probably hopefully do Kitty justice, but what is with her forehead? I seriously hope it's just distorted or something that pic, because that's a huge forehead.

A Vancouver native best known for her stint on the TV series "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven," Stuart still isn't sure how she snagged her current role, which was played in the first film by Sumela Kay. "I've never met the girl, but I feel bad about it," Stuart says. "I'm assuming that she looks older than Kitty Pryde should. I'm 18, but I still pull off 14 pretty well."

Except when she straightens her naturally wavy hair, as she did during preproduction. The unexpected side effect: She resembled co-star Anna Paquin. "I almost didn't get the part because they thought that I looked too much like her," says Stuart, who quickly reverted to her original coif.

You'd think she'd have more job security, having worked with Professor X himself, Patrick Stewart, in the 1997 flick "Masterminds." But Stuart's more interested in sharing the screen with another "X2" actor: Daniel Cudmore. In the comic, Colossus and Kitty were once romantically involved -- a fact that clearly intrigues the 5-foot-2 actress. History/Bio (Comics)

Shadowcat (Katherine "Kitty" Anne Pryde) is a comic book superhero in the Marvel Comics universe. She used the code-names Sprite and Ariel early in her career and is a member of the X-Men. She first appeared in X-Men #129 (January 1980). She is notable as one of the few recognizably Jewish characters in Marvel Comics.
Katherine "Kitty" Pryde was born in Deerfield, Illinois , United States to Carmen and Theresa Pryde.

Her paternal grandfather, Samuel Prydeman, was a European Jew, known to have been held in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. His married sister Chava Rosanoff is reported to have died during the Holocaust. Samuel was rescued by the United States Army at the end of World War II in Europe in 1945. He soon immigrated to the United States.

As an adolescent of thirteen years of age, Kitty started suffering from recurring headaches. Unknown to her was that these resulted from her body trying to cope with her new powers. Kitty was a mutant, with the ability to become intangible and walk through solid matter. An ability Kitty herself calls "phasing".
Shortly thereafter Pryde was approached by both Professor Charles Francis Xavier and the Hellfire Club's White Queen, Emma Frost. Taking an instant dislike to the White Queen, she chose to go with Xavier. When Emma kidnapped Xavier and the X-Men, Kitty helped fight to free them. Proving herself in this battle, she joined the X-Men soon after.

Being a thirteen year old girl among a team of combat trained adults, Kitty became something of the team's mascot character. Dressing in ridiculously colored outfits and going by cute names such as 'Ariel' and 'Sprite', Kitty led a relatively care free existance among the X-Men.

This changed when Kitty became possessed by the demon ninja, Ogun. While in Japan assisting her father, who had gotten caught up in a bit of organized crime, Kitty was brainwashed by Ogun into thinking she was his assassin. Ogun bestowed upon Kitty a virtual lifetime of martial arts training and sent to her kill her fellow X-Man, Wolverine. Now calling herself Shadowcat, Kitty was able to resist Ogun's influence with Wolverine's help (and tough love). Kitty and Wolverine defeated Ogun and in the process formed a strong teacher/student bond with each other which remains to this day. Nevertheless, Kitty returned to the X-Men a changed girl, no longer the innocent and carefree Sprite they knew.

Despite Professor X's attempt to move her to The New Mutants after they were formed, she remained an X-Man for several years. During this time she developed a crush on her teammate Colossus. Also during this time, her life was saved by a small alien dragon when the X-Men were fighting the Brood; the dragon, who she named Lockheed and who has been her frequent companion since. During the Morlock Massacre, she was injured by Harpoon's energy spear and lost control of her phasing abilities. She was eventually cured with the help of both Doctor Doom and Mr. Fantastic. During Kitty's absence from the team, however, the X-Men had died fighting the Adversary. Unaware that Roma had returned the X-Men to life, Kitty joined the British team Excalibur. It was during her time with Excalibur that Kitty inherited her friend Magik's Soul Sword, and that she became romantically involved with scruffy British bad-boy Peter Wisdom.

Eventually Excalibur disbanded and Kitty ended her relationship with Wisdom. She returned to the X-Men, but left again after the apparent death of Colossus. She went on to attend the University of Chicago, trying to give herself a normal life. It was during this time her father was killed when Cassandra Nova's wild sentinels destroyed Genosha.

Recently, she once again rejoined the X-Men at the urging of Cyclops and Emma Frost. On one of the new team's first missions, Kitty discovered Colossus alive and imprisoned in a research facility. The full repercussions of this discovery have yet to be seen.

Powers & Abilities:
Shadowcat possesses the ability to "phase" -- pass through solid matter by passing her atoms through the spaces between the atoms of the object through which she is moving. Utilizing her phasing ability she can also walk on air. While phasing she is intangible and thus invulnerable to physical attacks; additionally, telepaths have a hard time reaching her mind in phased form. Her phasing powers also disrupt any electronic equipment she passes through.

Due to a battle injury, Kitty Pryde became unable to control her phasing abilities, and nearly faded out of existence. Although Reed Richards and Doctor Doom saved her life, for years she was only able to become solid through great effort; she has since overcome this disability.

Shadowcat is a genius in the field of applied technology such as computers. She is an excellent hand-to-hand combatant, having been trained in the arts of aikido and karate. After the martial arts master known as Ogun possessed her and imprinted his mind onto hers, Shadowcat became skilled in the arts of ninjitsu, which she was later trained extensively by her one time mentor, Wolverine. She has had training in gymnastics and is a professional dancer.

I picked up the second issue of the new miniseries "Kitty Pryde: Shadow & Flame," and I must say, it's a very good read.

BTW: Katie Stewart is just...blecch. I thought Sumela was a good Kitty, but I'm excited to see how Ellen does.

Yes. Sumela really looks Kittyesque to me for some reason. I loved her small but effect cameo in X1. She even talked in a sweet spoken tone that I imagine Kitty would talk in.

I'm still interested to see how they are going to work her in seeing that they already essentially gave alot of her comic personality to the movieverse Rogue. I just hope they go straight to her excalibur days and later, sarcastic almost *****like character that again sees being a superhero as more of a curse than a blessing. Considering the other characters added it would fit the flow with angel and beast.

The good thing is that the three Kitty actresses are not that dissimilar... you can almost morph Sumela into Katie into Ellen and imagine that the person just got older.... I was really worried about the fact that three people had played this part, but seeing the pictures together actually makes me feel the actresses have been well-chosen, even though Sumela seemed more grown-up than Katie in X2...

Indeed...but since a dragon is unlikely in the movie...a lizard with a dragon-type look (iguana? chameleon? monitor?) might be a cool nod to the comics and to show they appreciate the source material. It'd just be a few seconds - lizard in a cage, or on her shoulder or something... 'this is/that's Lockheed'... I remember a girl at college who once brought her chameleon into class and walked around with it on her shoulder....

I like the idea, personally...if they could find a place for it, where it didn't seem forced or contrived.

First off, it's Katie Stuart. Secondly, she was a HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE choice to play Kitty.

I really think some people confuse Katie with Sumela Kay, who actually was a decent choice at the time for Kitty and from what I remember they would of stuck with her but she was busy during filming of X2... but no, Katie was just a joke onscreen and thankfully they realized this and cast someone at least a bit more like younger sprite, still stuck on that forehead though but if she acts good, I'll deal.

Shawn is 11 inches taller than Ellen ya know? But I don't get why in this picture Shawn doesn't look that much taller than her. Is it possible she's wearing high heel shoes or stilts?
In this pic it looks as though Bobby is the one approaching Kitty. I guess their taking this from Ultimate X-Men. Perhaps Bobby is the one who's decided he doesn't wanna be with Rogue anymore. It also seems possible to me since Rogue is either playing a tiny role or is not in X3 at all than Kitty must be replacing her in this specific role. I'll be relieved if this is the case here b/c in the first 2 films Rogue's role should've been Kitty Pryde's role! The movie Rogue was NOT who the comic Rogue was, it was who the comic Kitty Pryde was.

But yet they say a guy dressed like Gambit was on the set too and the media isn't telling us if that's true. If there really was a Gambit by now I'm sure they would've confirmed who his actor was just like they did with the other new characters so far! Besides these set reports are only coming from fans, so how can I be so sure that their true? Anna can't possibly be playing a big role in X3 b/c she's gonna be shooting that movie "Margaret" at the same time (she's confirmed to play a lead in that too). So don't argue and stop speculating on this subject. I don't see how she can play a lead role in X3.

That doesn't change the fact that an extra who was on the set gave a report that said Anna was there. This report also talked about other character, and hints at what the scene was that was being fimed. Only a few days after, Fox ordered thexverse to take the report down.

The scene that was shot was most likely a funeral scene. The extra said that Halle was up infront giving a wealthy amount of dialogue. At the same time there was a newspaper article were an extra said they saw Halle shoot a 'sad scene'. Then joblo.com confimed that there would be a funeral scene in the script, were Storm leads the eulogy. So I don't think its possible for the set report to be 'bogus' or whatever, seeing as all the reports mesh.

I liked the Kitty from X1 best and I wasn't feelin' the girl from X2 much at all...I'm glad she's not back. The Ellen Page casting is decent...at least appearance-wise, since I haven't seen Page acting in anything up to this point. It wasn't like Kitty was supposed to be a dime in the comic, though them casting some eye candy that could act definately would've been ok in my book.

Kitty was never played off as "hot" in any way. Cute, yes. But not hot. She's always been there as the plain-jane Jewish girl who feels like she's in way over her head, but has a great brain and a cool power.

"Hot" is Emma Frost. "Hot" is Illyana Rasputin when in Limbo as an older teenager.

Frankly, I'd be pretty pissed if Kitty ends up being some sexy hottie who is built like a supermodel. She's average, and that's how we love her.

Bear in mind this is coming from someone who bought her very first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #129 when it came out, and I've been following her through the Uncanny X-Men, Excalibur, and the years following that. Nowhere has she ever been portrayed as a supermodel hottie. Usually, in fact, she's written as a brainy geek who doesn't do much about her looks. (That's why I like her!)

I DON'T want to get let down if X3 ends up being underwhelming. That's why we got set reports and pix: It's a way to determine if the product is up to par..no matter how unofficial or vague that can be.

Park City, Utah — In the movie Hard Candy, Geoff, a 32-year-old sexual predator, lures Hayley, a 14-year-old girl whom he meets over the Internet, into his apartment. When the two of them are locked inside the house, a series of very bad things unfolds.

Somewhere between art and exploitation, this dark little shocker of a film has produced one of the real breakout performances of the 21st Sundance Film Festival. Hayley is played by a 17-year-old Canadian actress, Ellen Page. Though Canadians may know her from her roles in films such as Marion Bridge and Wilby Wonderful, they've never seen her in a performance as forceful and authoritative as this one. As one man commented after the screening, 'She's a terrific little actress and she makes me very nervous.'

Hard Candy, which was shot in three six-day weeks and cost under $1-million, has just been sold to Lions Gate Films for four times that amount. It originated with an idea from producer David W. Higgins, who read an article in the newspaper about girls in Tokyo who targeted sexual predators on the Internet, invited them to their homes and then mugged them. He commissioned playwright Brian Nelson to create the script, and hired David Slade, an Englishman who worked extensively in commercials and music video, to direct.

Slade explains how he found the Canadian actress for the part: 'Because the role of Hayley is so pivotal -- what am I talking about? It's all encompassing -- we saw a heap of girls, more than 300, without finding anyone we were really happy with. Then we saw this tape of some CBC television show that Ellen had done and we immediately wanted to talk to her.'

'She read for us, but she was bald at the time [Page had shaved her head for a role in first-time feature director Alison Murray's Mouth to Mouth] so it was like having a boy reading the part, but it was still a phenomenal performance. We flew her out to meet some of our financiers. She read a couple of scenes and blew them away.'

A turning point, Slade says, came when one of the potential investors 'asked a question I thought was really ridiculous. He said, 'What character in history do you think your character most resembles?' As I was putting my hands over my face, she answered, 'Joan of Arc.' I just grinned as we walked out of the door and we gave her the part the next day.' '

In person, Page is about five feet tall and delicately built, with light brown hair and matching eyes. She's so unobtrusive she seems to fade into the chair she sits in, but perhaps she's feeling particularly overwhelmed right now. She says she has been 'a big space case' since the shock of seeing Hard Candy for the first time with an audience. 'People kept coming up to me and saying nice things and I could hardly speak. I'd been warned that the premiere was going to be a big deal and I thought, 'Okay,' but it was nowhere near what it actually is. I'm just taking breaths, you know?'

The first screening was a bit of a blur: 'I know it always sounds like B.S. when actors say this, but I don't like watching myself that much. It makes me feel a little nauseous. But it was great to hear the nervous laughter, men squirming and women letting out little hoots.'

Looking back, she can't remember exactly if she knew the film was about sexual predation, but she does recall that, 'before connecting to it in a sociological way, I read it and felt completely exhausted. On a simple mechanical level, it's two actors -- me and Patrick Wilson -- in a house and an immense amount of dialogue.'

When she absorbed the role more fully, 'I became very passionate about the story because I felt it was a story that should be told. Clearly this young woman has been struck by something and she feels passionate and there's something very beautiful about that. . . . If people walk out of this film feeling numb, I think that's good, because feeling numb can be the beginning of provoking consciousness.'

One important factor in casting Page, Slade says, was that 'she had the emotional maturity for the role. Morally, I wanted to make sure she could handle it and frankly, there were times when she just sat down and cried, but she made it clear to me: 'This is part of my process and I want to be left alone. Don't worry about me.' '

Is she ever afraid of going to emotional extremes? 'No,' she says. "I love it. I gotta say, it's one of my favourite feelings to be challenged so much and to disappear, between 'action,' 'cut' and beyond. Even if it's a scene where you're at the bottom of a well and your best friend's dying, it feels unbelievable when you escape. It's like a drug.'

The rush of acting, she says, is a relatively recent discovery, which she first made when she was 15, working on Marion Bridge with Molly Parker (who showed up to see the Hard Candy premiere). Until that point, Page had played on various series, including guest appearances on Trailer Park Boys and an American movie of the week. Everyone told her that acting was 'a great experience' for a kid, and she enjoyed memorizing her lines and following instructions.

As Page was finishing a scene in Marion Bridge, in which Parker played her mother who had given her up for adoption, 'all of a sudden I had this feeling' -- she taps her flat palm against her chest. "Oh . . . is that what acting is? I've been going for that feeling ever since.'

Before she offers a soft handshake goodbye, she adds, apropos of nothing in particular, 'The universe has been pretty darn kind, I must say.'.

On Ellen's performance in Hard Candy, Variety had this to say:

Although the film's design elements, from the elegant decor and arresting lateral scene transitions bathed in red to the infectious musical selections, are striking if trendy, Hard Candy is memorable most of all for Page, a Halifax, Nova Scotia thesp said to have been 15 when pic was shot. Self-possessed to an astonishing degree, both as an actress and as the character, Page handles her enormous load of dialogue with adult-sized portions of emotion, insinuation and driving rage, not to mention an appreciation of sexual dynamics and consequences that repeatedly astonishes. Let me explain...a few months ago when Maggie was cast as Shadowcat, it was rumored that the producers of Lost warned Maggie if she accepted the role in X\|/, that her character would be killed off from the show. Well, if you’ve seen last night’s episode, her character Shannon, got got in the gut (that’s ghetto lingo for ‘got shot’). Coincidence? I think not!

Now I think that the producers of Lost told the producers of X\|/, to keep the casting news on the hush hush and to deny it. That way the Lost producers can keep the audience in suspense until Shannon dies. I’m assuming that her last episode was filmed a few weeks ago and that Maggie is now on the set of X\|/, which is filming as we speak. Hmm.

Of course we all know that it has been confirmed that Ellen Page will play Kitty. But it was also confirmed that Maggie Grace was playing Kitty as well. After all, it was confirmed by Variety and not some crap rumor like on CanMag or something. It is possible that they were fooling us to believe that Maggie was never even approached for the role. Could this mean that Maggie might still be playing Shadowcat and Ellen playing a different character, the so-called, “X-Kid” or vice-versa?

I was surprised when they killed of Shan after making such a point of saying that if Maggie Accepted the role in X3, they'd kill her off. But I don't think that that means that she's in. And if she is, she's definitely not Kitty. They've confirmed Ellen Page as Kitty, and it just seems stupid to go to all the trouble. Besides, Ellen Page has been seen with Shawn Ashmore, which would suggest that they have similar call times.

So I'm going to go with "Maggie Grace is out and you need some sleep." :)

I don't know about everyone else...but i am really unhappy about who the casted for Kitty Pryde ...Ellen looks nothing like Shadowcat. When i saw the clips of her in the trailer, i didn't even think Kitty Pryde when i first say them. First off, Ellen is way to short, She is only 5 feel tall...Kitty's height it 5'6". Also, Kitty became a mutant when she is 13 and a half years old...Ellen is 18, thats too old...and i know everyone think she looks like she's 12, but she doesn't those were just younger pics of her...this is her when she's around 12http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2003-07-24/cover_story-3.jpgAlso, Ellen has Dark Brown eyes...in the Comics she has Hazel and in the X-Men: Evolution serious she as Blue. I wasn't really happy with Katie Stuart in X2 and i wasn't a big fan on the girl they casted in X1 Sumela Kay...but it hasn't gotten better. I don't think they are even trying with the character.

I'm glad they're going for the old-skool Kitty Pride, rather than going for the charactre she now is in Marvel Comics: the young Kitty is a typical Marvel charactre (a charactre with normal problems so the audience can relate to them. Like Spidey). The older is (in my sole humble opinion) just another supermodelheroine with a pet-dragon and some skill in computers.

wow--i'm new here and i was gonna say hi....but i just read through everything in your section and it has A LOT. i'm kinda glad that it ends up back on the character but it did take ten pages to get there...
regardless, i'm also a fan of kitty (my nickname is actually kittycat, long story)and i agree that the choice to have ellen play the earlier version of the character (Sprite, Ariel, Sprite, then Shadowcat) is really smart--i loved her best back then (even though nowadays isn't so bad either...er...its slightly strange that she goes from bartending to running for political office in her most recent incarnation). i do have one question: since i'm just a little bit of a geek and pick up the ultimate x-men series occassionally, i was wondering what anyone thought about the face that the rogue-kitty-iceman triangle made it to the movie? (which is funny cause after *spoiler* kitty breaks it off with bobby, she moves onto spider-man--what?! how'd that happen?)

Also, that hat hides her high forehead (a deliberate ploy, I bet)...

I don't think this is being mean - She's a lovely girl, and there's nothing wrong normally with having a specific body type.

But it's hard when someone is onscreen. All of their flaws are magnified, and it doesn;t help when someone is wearing head-to-toe leather. Sadly, it's typcial human behavior to pick out the negative, and what would normally be an attractive young girl suddenly becomes "fat" or "manish" to an audience.

Again - it's the job of the costume people to account for such thigns, and compensate for it.
