That root's joint is weak. They pretty much peaked with "Things Fall Apart." Not much spectacular, I wouldm't say that black thought killed that track.
Nas's lyrics are a bit better imo, but yeah both of the tracks are weak.

Aww, Banks is actually cold on the lyrical side, his delivery is kind of boring but he's nice with the punchline.
And I agree about my house, wasn't feeling it at all, I meant to post hands up not my house. Thats his single My House was scrapped.

Getting this thread back on track. Masta Killa, Meth aka Method Man, and Short Dog aka Too Short all have just released new ones this month. Probably liking Killa's album the most out of all three, as he seems to be going a little more old school Wu-Tang as opposed to the rest of them that have recent cuts released.

I might show my age here, but I think rap has sucked pretty much since 95. From about 85 to 95 it was fresh, fun and innovative. It emphasized music and lyrics, not *****es and bling. Today, rap is a joke. Not only are today's artists more in love with themselves than the artfrom they are involved in, but they have far less talent. The early Naughty By Nature or LL Cool J blows anything by Nelly or 50 Cent out of the water. 50 Cent makes me yawn. Eminem was cool until he got popular. Then he went from being funny to being down right obnoxious. Give me metal any day.

"out of the loop" "gangsta ****", this is why i don't like a lot of rap thesedays, it's all the same, made by people who wanna be gansta's, and talk like this. And all sounds the same as they're all trying to cash in on the same thing. And the people who listen to a lot of these, are similar. If your talking about rap on the whole(instead of just hip-hop), then horrorcore is much better than hiphop. More talented and sounds better, not to mention it being more unique and diverse.

Body Count is a pretty cool band. Really one of the only good rap-metal bands. I read about the band awhile ago since I knew the music but not the band and even though they were rock they were more gangsta than a lot of rappers. And I know it's kind of ridiculous that I'm saying gangsta because I'm a suburbinite white guy. I know Ice-T is busy acting these days but I'd like to see him bring Body Count back. There was a rumor that the band was going to play Ozzfest a couple years ago but that never materialized.

Judging by your taste in rappers, I suspect you were a nu-metal fan when that genre was big back in the mid 90's-early 00's correct?

some ICP was good, nothing for a few years, and i refer back to my point about hip-hop, people like it BECUASE it's popular and mainstream and they like lots of artists because they sound the same!
Esham has porduced some fantastic work, someone who thinks he's only about 'shock' obviously hasn't listened to much of him.

Hip Hop is an art culture consisting of the elements of DJing, Graffitti, MCing, breakdancing. MCing is only one form which is rap. Rap is what yo do when you performing Hip Hop

"**** is wack", do you actually talk like this? This is what I mean about Hip-hop, it's people TRYING so hard to be cool, and that's the best they come up with, Jamie Mattdrox and Monoxide child are two of the most talented rappers around, if your looking for freestlying ability and speed/precision, not to mention writing ability. Hip-Hop/Rap obviously owes a lot to George Clinton and Jamaican toasters but who is generally considered the first of the genre? Grandmaster Flash? Africa Bambaataa? I know Sugarhill Gang had the first hit with "Rapper's Delight" but they couldn't have been the first.

Hip Hop isnt trying to be cool, it's the culture from black people which evolutionsed and black people have always had the status quo on whats cool and other races have tried to copy. After all Rock N Roll was started by black people like Chuck Berry.
Who says I listen to fif? Son is weak but know your history it's all black music, Hip Hop is Black music and it's reached and done by others

But the fact is if your favourites are so cool then where's the crediblity and celebatory for them? It's not even like credible staples of the cutlure like Fader, XXL, Stress, Ego Trippin, Sohh are co-signing those no-names. But it's laughable for you to even insinuate that whatever those two guys you just named are better writers than Nas and Rakim.

LMFAO! Thank you for the amusing evening entertainment, so you insult people who you've never heard of? At least if you'd listened to them it would be reasonable. But I fear you would refuse to like anything that isn't what you conceive to be "da tru sound of da streets"(as I'd imagine you'd put it.) And not all black people, even those into rap, feel the need to act in such a way, it's like an overcompensation for something. If people have to adopt this personality, it seems weird. I've met lots of people who all listen to the same music like Tupac etc, and they all act in the exact same way. And all buy music that sounds as close to what they already listen to as possible. It's sad really, can't people enjoy music, it's diversity etc, without condemning it into a 'way of life' and a culture, especially when it breeds an air of hostility, and creates divides among people. It's people who take it too far with the whole talking like someone without an education for no reason, that makes me detest the 'music scene', it's like where Ali G was a huge pisstake, then people started acting like him to be cool! It has nothing to do with the true sound of the street (but thanks for playing the role of a minstrel and mocking ). I've listen to guys like the dudes you've mentioned and you said that the guys I mentioned who are major legendary acts in the music of Hip Hop are nothing compared to guys like Esham and that's just silly cause I dont even think the guys you mentioned wouldnt believe that. Now your problem is the fact I " act in such a way". Whats that? because I said "**** is wack" (which means it's not good) or that I carry and elitist attitude? Well, everyone who is a fan of anything can say that. Like you dont see comic book or movie fans do that here? Of course you do, same with fans in other genres. I'm not go to a fan of alternative and be like Run DMC are "The Kings of Rock" like they made a song saying would I?
And all buy music that sounds as close to what they already listen to as possible. Who said it creates an air of hostiity? lol are you that shook from this debate? No, simply we are saying that it silly to say a novelty genre like horrocore (which has a flagging history and breeded a great deal of patchy work) is better or superior to the genuine article of lyricists like Rakim, Common and Nas who are not simply pigeonholed as gangsta like say an NWA and have diverse topics. You dont even have to be that deep of a Hip Hop fan or a complete fan to recognised that.
Ali G is another argument altogether, he's funny when interview other people but he isnt mocking the culture rather the attitude of a select number of people in a area (ie "Chavs"in Staines), to link him as a mockery to whole culture would look alien to the hip hop generation in Atlanta, New York, Koln, Paris, Vancouver etc or other areas where Hip Hop culture is different thant the UK. But even in that case many black comedians in the UK thought Ali G was a modern day Minstrel Show and that's contreversial and debatable within itself.
Gets a little bit more broader than you think....

Me, I'm picky and choosey about what hip-hop and/or rap artists I will listen to. Basically, I hate music that relies on "nice beats to shake ya ass to" to sell. However, I do enjoy MCs who tell stories in their songs or at least have interesting/thought provoking things to talk about (i.e. Nas, Kanye West, Eminem, Jay-Z, etc.) and if they have a few club hits on the album, so be it.
If you are a fan of hip-hop and/or rap that has something to talk about and are looking to hear something new, check out my friend JayBlaze, an upcoming MC hailing from Oakland, CA @ http://www.myspace.com/jayblaze2005 and let me know what you think.
I like hip-hop. Nas, Eminem, and Immortal Technique are three of my all-time favorite emcees.

I am not into that Gangster Bulls**t that took over mainstream rap in the 90's. When peeps like NWA and Ice T started it they where talking about their lifes and their songs had a messege, to many of these rappers nowhere days just talk about how gangster they are just to sell CDs. You buy their album and its 14 songs about the same stuff girls, bling, what car they got. Its Boring.
I've got some unheard kanye west tracks where he says people where saying he shouldn't rap because his never sold drugs, killed some one and beacuse he went to college.

Dear all...I'm going to officially declare myself an authority on this topic...cuz i work here...
http://www.accesshiphop.com/home/:woot:
I had the painful displeasure of reading almost every post in this forum. I like what some of you are saying...I like some of the suggestions that a few of you threw out there as good hip hop. Overall, let me just tell you, there is a world of hip hop that many of you have no clue about. Which is unfortunate, because as I read, most of you comment only on what you've seen on tv or hear on the radio. 99.9% of whats being played right now is not real hip hop. And if a group doesn't have a DJ...its definitely not hip hop...they may be rapping...but keep in mind that "rapping" is merely a form of speaking or rhyming in rythm and melodically over music. Most commonly with something like a beat you'd hear in hip hop music...but none the less, what do you think Fred Durst does in most of his songs...even though it is heavy, hardcore rock-rap metal (or whatever people like to label it) he was rapping at times. But its not hip hop. Jason Miraz, likes to rap while playing an acoustic guitar....not hip hop though.
There are 5 elements that make up hip hop...The MC (the "rapper"), the DJ, B-boyin' (thats break dancing, kiddies. And you can be a B-Girl too.), Grafiti, and...separately you can even include the art of Beatboxin'. But to make good hip hop music, you don't need to be a breaker, know how to beatbox, or spray paint a wall. But a DJ would help, and aknowledging true elements of hip hop doesn't hurt either. Good beats, meaningful lyrics (not just to the elitist listener of hip hop). A good rapper/emcee...doesn't have to know how to freestyle...but if you want respect you better learn.
The music originated on the streets...and you know what...wise MC by the name of Murs once said to those of you on the outside lookin in..."if they're bumpin' Puffy in the ghetto, then who the f*** are you to say thats not hip hop." I do believe he was talking to people in the underground hip hop scene at that time, who were denouncing comercial rap. And on the other hand...Murs sounds nothing like anything you'd hear or see on tv, he himself has openly complained in his lyrics about mainstream hip hop. For the most part, I'd say he hates the fact that people were playing P-diddy and praising his music...but he had a point. However, another emcee/poet, Sole, once said "What do you want to move? The peoples minds or posteriors?"
Often I would post in the "What are you listening to right now" thread, and list off some obscure hip hop....hoping someone would PM me and say 'hey i have that album, good choice.'
But SHH isn't a place to post about hip hop. So...PM me if you'd like some suggestions...and by the way...to the original poster in this thread...I'm sorry but I think that JayBlaze sucks. But what do I know?

I think that was the point of the album, hence the name "Kingdom Come" referencing a graphic novel in which superman returns to a world running wild with irresponsible superheroes who've forgotten what it meant to wear a cape. He then asserts himself and reminds the world what it means to be a superhero.

I perfectly understood what his point was. The problem is, the point he's trying to make isn't all that interesting.
Yes, Jay, you're back to save the world from what hip hop was becoming. Now how about offering us something far superior to what you say you've come here to save us from.
The production was weak (aside from the majority of Just Blaze's contributions and even Chris Martin's "Beach Chair"), and The Neptunes only track was a complete mess.
He hasn't lost his flow. He's still a top class wordsmith, and the concept of "Kingdom Come" is a smart one, but if you're gonna come back from what was such a remarkable curtain call ("The Black Album") come back with your best. This wasn't it.

That is very true. I think Jay-Z is on some "Superman" level but I'm just a regular dude who can't relate. I still think the album had some meaning and depth. Problem was, it was too deep. You realize every song but 2 or 3 had somebody singing in the chorus or something? And he talked way too much on he album; giving it a lazy feel. And the problem with that is that he's infatuated with telling us this. Over and over and over again.

See, at least he put out an album worth listening to again. After taking the wrapping off of Luda's last CD, I doubt I'll ever listen to it again; save the 3 songs I put on my mp3 player.

I hear that LL Cool J is gonna leave Def Jam because of Jay-Z. I agree with Terry Jay-z is too cocky right now, I hear coming out of retirement and releasing his album first making it his priority isn't fair for all the other artist in Def Jam. Oh well still bangin Black Republicans and can't wait for Hip Hop is Dead

^This is a big step for me but...I'm actually gonna purchase a Nas CD. Hip Hop Is Dead looks really promising.

Wow, that's a shame. I also agree that Jay is ridiculously cocky.....he really should have stayed in retirement and kept his "gone out with a bang" status. I understand that Kingdom Come is supposed to be deep and whatnot and I still need to listen to it more perhaps, but I felt like the "I'm a grown businessman and I'm the best at what I do, blah blah blah" was repetitive and old. But then again I'm certainly no Jay-Z expert.
I definitely think Nas' album has potential though, I'm hopin it will be great.

Having listened to the album multiple times, I really don't know where this supposed "depth" is. Again, compared to what he's delivered in the past, "Kingdom Come" is incredibly weak.
Granted, the album isn't complete trash, but it's just not that great. And considering the overall lukewarm critical reception, I'd say there are many who feel the same.

Lost Ones is probably the deepest Jay song I can think of; with Meet The Parents coming in second.

Forget Nas and Jay-Z...they may be legends, and did wonders for hip hop a decade ago, like bringing it commercial success and mainstream exposure, but that is now part of what has destroyed rap/hiphop's image...anyway I haven't bought an album from either of them in years. This is one of the better hip hop albums I've heard this year...

I really don't care about the mainstream aspect of Jay and Nas' careers. The songs of theirs that I've liked the most weren't even singles they put out.

Method Man blames Jay-Z for not spending the money to help promote his new album, 4:21 The Day After...and as a result...sales are poor. And Meth is pissed. He and LL are right to leave Def Jam just as a show of force that Jay-Z isn't doing his part, and for some reason holds tiny grudges against certain other successful artists, because he's afraid they'll steal his spotlight.

I don't know much about Jigga's sense as a businessman; but it sounds like he could have done more as I didn't even know Meth dropped a new album. However; I don't think LL or Meth will be stealing his spotlight anytime soon.

neither do I, but they are among a few artists that brought hip hop into the forefront of music...unfortunately the direction it has taken (not just as a result of those two artist's careers) has become one that most people hate. Some people out there make the music because they love it, not because they want it to sell. Nas' album...Hip Hop Is Dead, may hold some truth, but his music is no exception. I don't even think Nas knows what real hip hop is anymore...more like his hop.
Jay just has nothing left to get off his chest, he's pretty much just having fun at this point. Still, even when he's not really trying he's better than most others.

Yeah, as mediocre as the album is by Jay standards; I'd take it over anything else on 106&Suck and most of what's on the radio.

Retirement? Comeback? Hah! Jay went nowhere. Jay's my favourite living rapper but this album is mediocre at best. Jay relied too much on his position as ceo/rapper to try and pass this dreadfully average album off to the masses who knew he'd drop another studio album at 1 time or another.
Its sad because this is the same guy that gave us reasonable doubt and blue print, 2 of my favourite Jay-z albums.
Jay has nothing to prove and it shows with his complacency in terms of overall skill on the album. His priorities, life style and way of thinking has changed and not for the better imo as an artist. Dissapointed.
