And for the 1,000th time: I'm putting out my recommendation of Danger Mouse/Gemini's Ghetto Pop Life. It's sick, b****es! :cmad:

Jazzy Jeff
Live From Nowhere CD
Everytime I see Jazzy Jeff's name, I always have visions of him getting thrown out the Banks' Bel-Air residence. Uncle Phil never really liked Jazzy, but maybe if he gave his mixes a listen he woulda had a change of heart. Jeff is clean on the cut and nice on the mix - a top notch selector by all means. On Live From Nowhere, Jeff blesses you with THE definitive classic 90s hip-hop mix. You should know the lyrics to pretty much every track on here (shame on you if you don't!), with tracks from the Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Pharcyde, Nas, ODB, Das EFX, Tribe, KRS, Pete Rock, Brand Nubian, Cru(!), Organized Konfusion and more. 49 tracks total with no sign of Will Smith. I guess "Men In Black" isn't classic enough. -snackmaster

He lost it now, imo. Every album, he's had one very standout track displaying his monstrous flow (Infinite, Just Don't Give A F**k, The Way I Am, Till I Collapse, 8 Mile Road), but his latest had absolutely none.
Not to mention in that Re-Up album, 50 merked his ass in all the songs they were both in. Which should NEVER happen.

I used to really like Eminem's weird style...especially his freestyles and his contributions to Rawkus's mixtapes. But he has really fallen off and is no longer hungry enough to be more than what he is...a mockery of hip hop.

[Talking:]
Uh, uh, uh, uh, 1-5 who's crooked than One-Time?
I say 1-5 who's more crooked than One-Time?
Yeah, yeah check is my mic on? As I twilight zone?
[Verse:]
My mindstate rewinds wakes
And fast-forwards bullets makin'a B-line for my face
Then they stop like Neo
Laugh at me throw some cash at me then fly pass me
But one ricochette off the wall to come ask me
Am I scared of him or the "***** that blast me"
Or maybe just the hammer that goes to be a hole in an innocent bystander
My eye's a camera my ear's a microphone
My mind is Pro Tools my head is a stool
Whats recorded in my dome gets reported when I zone
My mouth is a speaker I'm anchoring the misery
There's no friends my enemy of my enemy is my enemy
Beekers and test tubes full of memories
In my labatory I create stories
Doze off then wake up surrounded by Forties
Wit glocks tucked in they labels

Playin poker at a table
Cigarrets massage they shoulders in belly tops showin off they navels
A dime sack side bets, a tech is runnin' for president

Monoploy is playin' chess
I just picked up an obituary of a bullet proof vest
Put the headphone on my mouth speak into my ears
Yea microphone check, check, check, check, check
Check, a pair of Air Forces told me Rims've been extinct for years
Been ethnic cleansed by Jersey's tryna take over the set
And Television is on deathrow for killing BET and MTV over a dice game
And paralyizing CNN for knifing him in the neck
I hear Clear Channel's been fightin him in the rec
Who's in for givin' grape Kool-Aid laced wit STRY 9 to Mixtapes and arm robbin cassettes
Dope told me Weed was a crack fiend but Crack told me Dope was a base head
Hi-hats told police he was just a soldier he did what the Bass said
The Snare and the Kick didn't make it out alive
The Sample made it out with some money but he died in the ride
The 808 got caught wit some work (He ain't never comin' home)
So the MPC's and the MP3's is fightin over his turf
Sean Don just gave birth
But she's thinkin' bout leavin it on the doorstep of a church
Cristal can't have kids she plottin' to kidnap it that she orchestrated with a purse
But Gucci told Fendi and Fendi turned and around and told Henny
And Henny is Moets baby's father
But she tried it anyway disguised as nurse
In the newspapers it says "Hip-Hop called Rock n Roll racist"
The Six ripped the Five and the Maybach taped it
A Hundred dollar bill just signed a record deal
But blew all his money on the Braceletes

Aight, here's the 'Switch' track I was talkin' about. It's more of an experimental song, basically everytime you hear the word "switch", Lupe changes his flow. It gets real crazy at the end:
http://www.zshare.net/audio/switch-the-science-project-mp3-59j.html
[Intro: Lupe talking]
Yeah, revenge, now what we gonna do right now, a ha ugh, is gonna try a little experiment, just a little experiment, you know what I'm saying, a little science project, you know what I'm saying, I like to call it
Switch.
You you you, yes let the words woo you
till you woozy.
Let the lyrics subdue you,
massage and sooth you,
move you till conscience lose you.
Lu now rules you,
you do what Lu do and you'll do beautiful.
Switch.
I'm the meanest.
You the meanest?
I'm the meanest
and I mean this.
now I don't mean this
to sound fiendish,
but I'm a genious.
You a genious?
And the cleanest.
Never seen this
as clean as
my cleanest.
From on top,
from underneath,
from behind
or in between.
Switch.
I'm a hustler creeping with my hat low.
*****s know I pack so,
what they gonna do that for?
*****s got my back though
like answering the back door.
Catch you I'm a slap you, leave you redder than the bat phone.
Switch.
With a little bit of this and a little bit of that.
That.
Mixed with a little bit of pimp,
and a little bit of mac
and a little bit of limp
and a whole lotta gangster lean.
I can't be seen.
I ain't the King, but a ***** is strengthening
to paint the scene
and take the thing over
like a soldier caught in a polo gather hood like a cobra ***** thank a teen
Switch.
[Background:]
Switch *****, this is how I got it, I switch like hydraulic cars, switch like the barge *****. Switch.[Background]
[Interlude: Lupe talking]
Aight, now remember that, that's a, that was a part of the experiment. I had to set it up so. So don't worry I know what your thinking, I was thinking the same thing. Just, just follow me ok. Watch, ok. Come on now.
Murder *****s,
step on my shoes I hurt a *****.
Kill a *****.
Fill a ***** with holes.
Call women hoes.
Hold up *****s, hold up hoes.
Break the calm, dead in they bombs.
Blow up *****s, blow up hoes.
Turn around, smack they moms.
Switch.
Heal *****s.
Educate and build *****s
and still they *****s is real
to respect women.
Treat'em like they real,
they fell *****.
Watch the birds,
watch Dr. Phil *****.
Chill *****.
go learn a skill *****.
Aight.
Switch.
Rims, Mercedes Benz, twenties, twenty-twos, twenty-fours, rolls, gold, platinum watches, cases of more.
Gucci, rubis, mansions, models, VIP, Ferraris, chinchillas, diamond rings, change, Range Rovers, bling bling.
Switch.
*****s bust his trains.
Pocket full of change.
Dimes, quarters, taking orders,
delivering pizzas
and conditionles beaters.
Hand-me-down sneakers.
Silver.
Wannabe models won't show me love
and I can't get in the club.
Switch.
[Background:]
Switch *****, this is how I got it, I switch like hydraulic cars, switch like the barge *****. Switch.[Background]
[Interlude: Lupe talking]
Ha, it getting good right? Yeah, aight, so check this out. Now go back to the first one, aight, run back to that one. We're going to have a little bit more fun with that one, aight. You ready? Aight. Come on.
Switch.
Hey hey hey, it's coming back to you.
Lu no longer rules you.
You can do what you do.
Back to your usual.
Switch.
It's official.
It's official.
I'm official,
as officials
who got the stripes
and the flags
and the whistles
Switch.
Whistle and watch my *****s come
from the underground,
just like Thriller play Bambi
and you gonna hear that double sound.
Switch.
They can't touch the sound
that I'm busting now.
It's like a cloud trying to touch the ground.
Tough and bound, ever since we're touching down.
Jealous *****s catch your feelings cuz I'm hustling now.
What?
Switch.
They be hating.
Switch.
They be hating.
Switch.
What? What? What?
They be hating.
Don't give them stage
Switch.
What's a ***** supposed to tell them when they up in my face then?
Switch.
That you got a cousing that don't mind catching cases.
Busting *****s' heads in, slapping *****s' faces.
Switch.
And he a do it.
He a do it.
He a do it.
And I'll prove it.
Cuz I didn't seen it.
You didn't seen it?
I'd a seen it.
He the meanest.
Switch.
Ho, ho, ho. Wait.
I mean it,
I thought you were the meanest,
see?
That's why this thing is fiendish.
Right, now.
Switch.
[Outro: Lupe talking]
Yeah, experiment done. I think that was a goody, I think that was a good experiment, I think that was nice. It's a nice little science project.
[Background:]
Switch *****, I got it switch like hydraulic cars, switch like the barge *****. Switch.[Background]

i liked the eminem show, theres a good chunk of good songs on thier. i really hope he goes back to his old self. although he does need that one signature song out, he has plenty of matereial for that(britney spears, lindsay lohan, paris hilton,k-fed) that single is going to be sweet.
another thing he needs to do, is stop collaborating with these other ****ty rappers including 50.

Has anyone got Danger Mouse & Jemini's Album Ghetto Pop Life. It came out in 2003 and I think its a really good album that doesn't get enough praise. I still think Bush Boys is still one of the best rap songs about George W Bush/Iraq by anyone in hip hop. Danger Mouse has some awesome beats and its a pretty fun album. If anyone has listened to it they should definitely download of buy it.

Keys Open Doors has one of the best beats Neptunes have put out in a long time. The key chimeing is genuis. Hell Hath No Fury is one of the few gangsta rap albums of this decade that I have actully enjoyed. Too bad in didn't sell that well.
Why is it that critically acclaimed albums never sell well. Its like have critics like your album is the kiss of death.

I switch between both. Depening on what mood I'm in. But I love rap & hip-hop music. The bass just hits with that rhythm.
Most of the time, when I'm at school, walking through the hallways or doing class work, I'll listen to MF DOOM, ATCQ, and some Wu-Tang Clan.
But when I get in the car, and drive around, I'll play a lot of radio hits, or some OutKast, or popular song's instrumentals.

That doesn't even mention the emcee's that aren't commercial. Not saying all underground Emcees are better, but there are plenty that are.

Those guys you mentioned stood out against the rest because they had that extra something. Imo, Lupe has that in spades, ESPECIALLY when compared to 99% of other rappers, mainstream or underground. Come to think of it, most of the songs on the album could've been put out as a single. Let's face it, the only thing mainstream checks for is the hook. If it's catchy, you've sold 'em. Imo most of Lupe's songs on F&L are definitely something you can chant to.
"I Gotcha" though. Goddamn what a travesty. This was the third song I heard of Lupe, and it almost made me bury the dude because I hated it that much. I dodged a huge bullet. :wow:

As long as it fits the songs, I'd be cool with that. I've been hearing too many remixes that were just added on with no real composition added to make the beat and words sync.

All Lupe needs is the production to match his lyrical gravitas. Two of the best songs on Food & Liquor (Instrumental and Cool) were done by producers outside the 1st and 15th Production unit.
I totally agree with you. Pharrell Williams I' Gotcha was stale, seemed like he left the best beats of 2006 for Clipse. More hot beats from big produces like Timberland, Dr Dre, Mark Ronson, Kanye West, Neptunes and so on and Lupe will be on top.

- I finally picked up Big L's Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous (shame on me). But damn it's lyrically :wow:. The good ones die way too young.
- Picked up Lupe's "It Was Written". Way too much stereotypical mixtape noise, but some sick tracks on it as usual ("What It Do" is pretty friggin' hysterical).
- And Kanye's Fall Out Boy "Arms Race" remix?

The album was OK. But by Pharrells usual standards it wasn't that good. But I guess that only shows how high he has set the bar. The beats on Hell Hath No Fury where some of the best Neptunes had done in years and shows how innovative they can be when they want to.

My Grade: C+
My Take: Over the last few years, Timbaland has reinvented the pop music scene, delivering some of the finest production efforts of the decade with the likes of Mr. SexyBack himself Justin Timberlake and with former folk/pop sensation Nelly Furtado.
Dude's been on top of the world as of late, so I went into this album expecting a lot. On the production side of things (which is really what this entire album was built upon), it's pretty much a 17 track exhibit of Tim doing his Tim thing: creating ridiculously arresting soundscapes incorporating just about every genre of music one can think of. Unlike his fellow super producer Pharrell, Timbo didn't get lazy with his beats on his own solo project.
What's ironic, however, is that it's the guests Tim enlists that inevitably bring this album down. Some of Tim's more hip hop oriented tracks like "Kill Yourself" are literally killed by some of the most uninteresting and downright piss-poor emceeing I've heard in a longtime. The production is outstanding on some of those tracks, and yet cats come in on their verses and do absolutely nothing with it, creating some of the most frustrating listening experiences in recent memory.
The more interesting (and successful) guest appearances come from the non-hip hop cameos by She Wants Revenge on "Time" and the aforementioned Furtado and Timberlake on the single "Give It To Me". The Fall Out Boy track "One & Only" ain't half bad either, but it's pretty much just a Fall Out Boy track with signature Tim sounds at the very beginning and end.
This isn't a completely terrible record. It's just one that could have benefitted from guests who can actually capitalize on the gifts from god (i.e. Tim's production) given to them.
Check Out:
1.) "Time" feat. She Wants Revenge
2.) "Give It To Me" feat. Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake
3.) "Two Man Show" feat. Elton John
4.) "Fantasy" feat. Money

Well Tribe is still touring together, they recently toured this past summer 06, and showed up over the country, not a lot of shows but more than a handful. The closest to me was Washington and L.A.
Hating rap music is a tough thing to say. I used to share the same mindset with you but having a few debates as well as discussions here with other hypsters not of the exact same mindset as myself helped me become more open minded to things.
1) If you hate rap music today that means you hate all rap. Why? Because without people like Nelly, Chingy, T.I., Diplomates, Benzino etc. There would be no way to judge emcees like Rakim, KRS-ONE, ATCQ, De La Soul, Outkast, Big Daddy Kane, Schooly D, Special Ed, Wu-Tang and other groups that many consider to be "true" or "real" hip-hop.
2) Rap is rap, regardless, any type of rap is still rap no matter how you want to classify it. Old school, True school, real, fake, pop, ganster, crunk, hyphy, east, west or whatever. Rap is an element of Hip-Hop and you love it or you hate it. Anyone can do it and feel it, that is the beauty of it.
3) Rap is like similar to food, at least this is how I like to think of it. Some of it is good for you, food for thought (excuse the pun). Rap that is good for me and my mind and soul is..Common Sense, ATCQ, Outkast, Pharcyde, KRS-ONE, Biggie, The Roots, J5, Blackalicious, Atmosphere, Edan...etc. Then there is rap that I don't really care for but like the beats to just bob my head to, or dance to at a club, food that may feel good but isn't necessarily good for me, sort of like junk food.
I totally understand what you are saying and agree with you and what you are saying. But at the same time, the diversity is what allows you to pick out the Ecmees/Groups that stand above the rest and makes them unique and special. Otherwise it would all be the same and very boring. IMHO.
But sadly, it will never go back to the way it used to be.
If you really hate "Rap" today, im me and I can send you a huge list of emcees to check out that you may or may not know about that I am pretty sure you would like. And yes, they are very prevalent today.

HOW TO BE A BACKPACKER
By an Asian kid in the suburbs.
So you wake up one day and realize your taste in music sucks. And obviously, that means you suck as well. You're tired, frustrated, hopelessly unhip, and you're very sick of your Winamp playlist. But wait...... before you pull that trigger, consider this.
You need hip hop and you need it fast.
For your sake, I've set up a "How to be a backpacker" kit that's so easy, virtually anybody can do it. Don't worry. You'll be in touch with the little b-boy inside of you in no time. After this kit, you'll be keeping it so real that only other backpackers will understand a word you spit. So what are we waiting for? Let's begin.
A good backpacker is neck deep in underground hip hop records. Here's some to get you started:
Aceyalone - Accepted Eclectic
Mystik Journeymen - Black Sands ov Eternia
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
Anticon - Music for the Advancement of Hip Hop
Quasimoto - The Unseen
Atmosphere - Overcast
7l & Esoteric - The Soul Purpose
Start with these. Then supplement with some Aesop Rock, Buck 65, Solesides, Mr. Lif, and perhaps even a little Planet Asia. Throw in some a Kool Keith record for good measure and you're set.
Frat boys are starting to claim they're about the "real" hip hop. Show them who's boss by flaunting your superior tastes while STILL listening to all of their ****. Here's some of their favorites:
Jurassic 5 - Quality Control
Deltron 3030 (anything by Del)
The Roots - Things Fall Apart
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
Common - Like Water for Chocolate
Dilated Peoples - The Platform LP
Reflection Eternal - Train of Thought
Method Man / Redman - Blackout
Bonus Credit: Try obtaining some tapes of local artists nobody knows about. This will be your secret weapon.
So now you've got your base. But you still look like a little new-jack. Pick up some certified hip hop classics to boost your credibility. People will think you've been in the game for years. Backpacker approved classics:
Nas - Illmatic
Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus
Wu Tang Clan - Enter the 36 Chambers
De la Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Pete Rock / CL Smooth - Mecca and the Soul Brother
Jeru tha Damaja - The Sun Rises in the East
Freestyle Fellowship - To Whom it May Concern
Gang Starr - Daily Operation
Feeling brave? If you're ambitious, you can take things even further. Convince 'em you were there in the beginning with these:
BDP - Criminal Minded
Public Enemy - It'll Take a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
NWA - Straight Outta Compton
Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical Beatdown
Run DMC - Raising Hell
Erik B. & Rakim - Paid in Full
Bonus Credit: Tell people you're from the Bronx. Tell them about Kool Herc, Bambataa, and Flash. You were there. Make them believe it.
(Know your elements)
There are a few more things you must learn before you blossom into a backpacker. Without delay, here you have it:
- If anybody asks, your favorite producers are Primo, Pete Rock, Automator, Prince Paul, and the RZA (but emphasize that you only like pre-Wu-tang-Forever RZA).
- You must learn to speak like a backpacker. Pepper your language with "knowmsayin" and refer to as many things as possible as "****". You'll have to be patient. Try recording your voice and comparing it to some Busta Rhymes skits. Practice makes perfect.
- Wear T-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, baggy jeans (not too baggy. you do not want to crossover into raver pants territory), and lots of hats and visors. Walk with a slight limp and never smile.
- Have diversity on your side. Backpackers get eclectic with Portishead, Esthero, Radiohead, DJ Shadow, and Amon Tobin. You can say your girl/boyfriend got you into it.
- You must like at least one Jay-Z album. It is a backpacker's obligation. This will save your ass when people claim you are an elitist snob.
- Smoke lots of weed.
So there you have it. It's really much easier than it sounds. If it helps, try setting a few hours aside each day to practice hip hop. Refer to UndergroundHipHop.com and read Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists. Go to shows, write some lyrics, learn to beatbox, get some 1200s. Learn about the elements and assimilate yourself into them. Quiz your friends and laugh at their ignorance. Confidence won't be so slippery much longer. Remember... hip hop is a way of life, and now you've got the shortcuts.
If you need further assistance... try to Discover Hip hop.
Ok! You're welcome.
Good luck everybody!

31. Approximately 10% or more of the songs in your iPod were produced by J Dilla.
30. Anytime an article is published about Slept on classic hip hop albums you immeadiately read it to find out how many of them you own or have at least heard of.

7. You maintain that Stoupe, The Enemy Of Mankind is like A Tribe Called Quest or A Pimp Named Slickback, you gotta say the WHOLE THING.
6. You think its irreprehensible when Snoop Dogg keeps calling women *****es and hoes in his songs, but when Slum Village do it, for some reason it just doesnt bother you as much.....
5. Y ou cant wait for the new AZ, Hi Tek and Cormega albums to drop.
4. You are convinced that if Method Man had made a video for Say, Fall Out or Presidential MC his album wouldve sold better.
3. You believe that Jay-Z and Nas albums coming out coming out one week after the other on Def Jam could help bring hip hop back.
2. You concur that Byron Crawford (Bol) is indeed a ****** ass *****.
1. The term backpacker pisses you off so much that you write a long ass blog about why its a divisive term and tie it in to some wild conspiracy theory involving the government, corporations, media outlets and record labels removing all of the consciousness, creativity and balance from mainstream rap music.

So I picked up this cat Kenn Starr's album over the weekend. I never heard of the dude until I was going through iTunes' hip hop section. I'll give it a review maybe later in the week or so. It's not bad. Dude's got a crisp flow, and the production has a really slick indie vibe. Didn't completely and utterly set my world on fire, but it's one of those "better than a lot of s*** out there" type of records.

Yesss! Very good album...and the phone call skit to Will Smith's office had me laughing my ass off.
Anyone get this yet? He's not black...he's not white...he's albino! This is considered his best album so far...its really personal stuff, theres a great article on him in the last issue of Rolling Stones...you might know him from Rhymesayers fame...and appearances with Atmosphere...seriously, this is hip hop...and again...rap is something you do...like in rock, playing the guitar is something you do...it doesn't define the genre...that said, just give it a try...and please...don't listen to the media, or MTV, and the major radio stations out there that claim someone like Mims is hip hop...its not...he's a rapper and more specifically its just horrible money making pop music. If you want something meaningful and something that gives you hope that somewhere out there hip hop isn't dead as Nas claims...then check this guy out.

Whoever uses the term "I hate rap" may as well say, "I hate food". There are that many different variations on the genre. Backpacking, hardcore, crunk, dirty south, east coast, west coast, rap-metal, hip-pop, trip-hop, etc.

backpack rap isn't really a style of rap...its someone who is a fan of like...strictly underground hip hop or other underground rappers. Its almost more like, the snobby movement of kids who think that underground hip hop is the only "real" hip hop. There are backpack rappers, and they are described as self promoting, traveling, connection making, do it yourself, independent artists...but its not a form of rap. It would be like calling someone who skateboards and happens to be an mc...a skate-rapper.

btw F**k Kanye, Pharell and Lupe for using that Thom yorke sample...I listened to an original sample he used for a John Legend song...it was completely copied...why not just call it a newly recorded version of the original...kinda like when Puffy took the whole entire Sting/Police song for the tribute to Biggie in I'll be Missing You...no originality...just paid a lot of money to steal an entire song and use it to sell it to a generation that probably has no knowledge of the original.

Yes, he's dope but there are many, many lyricists out there that are excellent. It all depends on your taste, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, KRS-ONE, Andre 3000, MOS DEF, BIGGIE, Slug, EYEDEA, Jeru The Damaja, Black Thought, Big Pun (dude was dope, just have to get away from that single), Nas, Juice, Illogic is very nice, Immortal Technique, Mr. Lif, J-Live and my personal favorite Edan, to me he is the best Emcee in the world, the kid is just ridiculous.
