Common used to be my hero...back in the day when he first started to about the time 'Like Water For Chocolate' came out. But I did not like his last album at all...too much Kanye...not enough Common.
Hip Hop has been dying to me more and more everyday...people try to transcend and take it too far. Mos Def's last album was waay to experimental for me...Talib is still doing his thing...but not really getting the type of audience he deserves. They need to make another Blackstar album...that's for sure.
And what the hell happened to Fugees? Damn you Lauryn Hill! Get the **** over yourself already!

Lupe Fiasco Unveils New Tunes At Lollapalooza
August 06, 2007
Jonathan Cohen, Chicago
Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco debuted three new songs yesterday (Aug. 5) during his hometown set at Lollapalooza, including "Superstardom," the first single from his upcoming second album. Backstage, the artist told Billboard.com he is still eyeing an Oct. 31 release for the set, dubbed "Lupe Fiasco's The Cool," although that date may move.
Fiasco dedicated "Superstardom," which features vocalist Matthew Santos, to the Lollapalooza crowd, telling them, "Ya'll are my superstars. I just want to jump down there and get everybody's autograph." The artist also played the new cut "Paris, Tokyo," as well as a snippet of "US Placers," the Thom Yorke-sampling song which features Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.
Later, he introduced rapper Gemini, who he has signed to his 1st & 15th imprint via Atlantic. Gemini's debut, "Troubles of the World," should be out before the end of the year.
"The Cool" will be the follow-up to last year's "Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor," which earned three Grammy nominations. Once he's finished in the studio, Fiasco will perform at the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle in early September.

I hate to say it or even bring it up, but not to mention the fact that he did a Coke commercial with Mya and the song they were singing/rapping was what's realer than real, or something very similar.
How ironic, Common rapping about keeping it real while shooting a coke commercial. I'm not bagging on him for doing it, money is money, but it just didn't sit well with me.

I find the concept of hip hop brilliant. It was formed by a bunch of people in the inner city making music with what ever they had to make music with...in the case of hip hop that music was made with records of other people's music. To me, the story of hip hop is the story of a poor and repressed peoples who found a way to get their voice heard. It's inspiring. They had no musical training, no instruments, no nothing...and they made music. It was an amazing and brilliant movement akin to independent filmmaking and self published comics.
However, I feel the bottom fell out in the mid ninties and now hip hop is a joke...and I'm not laughing. Hip hop used to be fresh and innovative...everyone was doing something different and everyone was pushing boundries some where. Now, it's over produced, over processed and over played. What made hip hop unique is now gone and replaced by b**ches and bling.
I know there are some uderground artists that are something of a throwback to the fresh sound of old school hip hop, but I have never gotten around to listening to them. It's hard for me to listen to a new rap artist. Even though I find the music amazing and at times brilliant, it's still not reall my thing. I only listen to a handful of artists.

Bump for one of the best:
Yo
Aiyyo I'm lost underwater
I see a pink dog with a crystal handle, so I keep swimmin
Amazed that I'm not drownin
Butterflies took control when I arrived, I opened the door
No I knocked first, I'm not on my turf
I seen a ray of lights that resemble live fireworks
Some mermaids with Halle Berry haircuts flashin they tail
Like follow me now, don't be afraid
I'ma show you where all the djinns and spirits pray
If you scared to face this life you shouldn't stay
So I kept on swimmin, grabbed on to her fin to help me out
As we got close I seen the boat all shot up with his anchor out
Then she asked me politely what I'm thinkin about
I said nuttin - she said nuttin leaves nuttin
If you fill me up bet this'll bring that out
I seen rubies, diamonds, smothered under octopus
Jellyfish sharks soar, aquaproof pocketbook
Pearls on the mermaid girls
Gucci belts that they rock for no reason from a different world
Up ahead lies Noah's Ark, but that's waves away
And way to the right, that's one of our bangin spas
She quoted I took notice, Spongebob in the Bentley Coupe
Bangin the Isleys, he slow backed up
Then he passed me swoop, seen his chick eyein me hard
He got vexed and smacked his boo
Took off, continued my travels
Seen a rock from the Titanic
Lookin fat and nah it wasn't damaged
Then I seen somethin real big, sky blue and gold
with whitewalls, behind a large city
That was lost before Christ walked the walk
upon the waters that's so bright
Everytime we got close the mermaid held on tight
All I heard was "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar"
"Bismillah ar-Rahman, ar-Raheem, Allah screamed"
That we heard from afar, everyone selat
And the world's banginest minds got crowded in
With life that I can't explain
They said sir yes I'm glad you came, greeted me with Qu'rans and Torahs
Prayed after that we said amen

Bumpalicious.
One of the few cats who sells millions of records and actually deserves it:
Things ain't always what they seem or cracked up to be
Like all these fakin' ass rappers in this industry
Talkin' bout what they got, and they ain't got a damn thang
How you own three cars, but you don't own ya own name?
Get ya business right, boys, the first class is in session
Get a entertainment lawyer in the music profession
Start up ya own company, trademark the name
That's gon' run ya bout a grand so start savin' ya change
Open a bank account quick, and then follow these steps
Sign yourself to yourself and start signin' ya own checks
Hit the booth and start recording at the speed of need
Whatever gets ya juices flowin', could be speed or weed
Get it mixed and mastered, pressed up and plastered
Sell it to ya whole hood out the trunk, ya bastard!
Show all the non-believers what you destined to be
And in just a couple years you could be rich like me!
[Hook]
But I can't hold my tounge
I'ma tell it like it is
This biz ain't all fun
I'ma tell it like it is
Give it to ya straight, no chase
I'ma tell it like it is
Look you straight in yo face
And I'ma tell it like it is
I can't hold my tounge
I'ma tell it like it is
This biz ain't all fun
I'ma tell it like it is
Give it to ya straight, no chase
I'ma tell it like it is
Look you straight in yo face
And I'ma tell it like it is
[Verse 2]
See, mostly all your favorite artists got some serious problems
The money could be the problem, but money can't solve 'em
Some get addicted to drugs and flat out lazy
Some taste a little fame and go flat out crazy
I'm close, 'cause those close wanna live off my fame
And that type of s*** alone will drive a n**** insane
Not to mention all the vultures, the scandalous promoters
Crabs will try to sue ya, magazines will misquote ya
Most of these label-heads, they don't care nothin' about ya
If you stop sellin' records, they'll act like they don't know ya
It's hard mixin' business with pleasure, so don't play
Me and my crew argue and fight like every other day
Rappers ain't above the law, but our life is so fast
That we got a Special Task Force of police on our ass
All that, and this is really just the start of it
Hip Hop, you really wanna be a part of it?
[Hook]
I can't hold my tounge
I'ma tell it like it is
This biz ain't all fun
I'ma tell it like it is
Give it to ya straight, no chase
I'ma tell it like it is
Look you straight in yo face
And I'ma tell it like it is
I can't hold my tounge
I'ma tell it like it is
Man this biz ain't all fun
I'ma tell it like it is
I'ma give it to ya straight, no chase
I'ma tell it like it is
Look you straight in yo face
And I'ma tell it like it is
[Verse 3]
What's worse than havin' no money is havin' it and losin' it
What's worse than havin' some money is grabbin' and abusin' it
We never took no money from Chingy, thought I was cool wit him
I wish his ass well, but I don't want nothin' to do with him!
Some don't own they publishin', me I never fool wit 'em
I'm down for my artists, try my best to stay true to 'em
'Cause outside my label, competition is irrelevant
Unless I'm still in competition with my president
And believe that I'm supportin' the Hova
'Cause the industry's shady, it needs to be taken over
But the first rule to accumalation of wealth
Is don't trust nobody but ya God damned self!

I used to think like that, but you know what I am happy for those artist that have mass produced very similar sounding music. Because if all that was available was Mos Def, A Tribe, Felt, etc. then it would be very boring and everyone would sound the same, but just have a different similar sound to them.
Real hip hop can not be defined, Hip Hop and it's musical vehicle Rap, is real by anyone that creates it. It is not confined or constricted to only those individuals with great mastery over word play and their flow or cadence.
It's here for everyone and we all have different tastes. I'm not saying I like everything that is produced or even that I do not cringe when I hear it or see kids bobbing their heads and repeating lines that a fourth grader could come up with. But I accept it, like it or not.

thats true-ish...but, hear me out...the stuff thats "popular" right now...is not hated just because it's popular, thats an old train of thought...it's hated by the hip hop community because its absolute garbage. The only thing close to "real" thats breaking major waves right now in the commercial scene is Common's Finding Forever. And there is so much more out there that is 10X better than his album that have been released this year. Hip hop can be defined actually...and unfortunately the image that pop/rap artists are portraying it as now, is false, mis-used and basically raped of originality. Money making music period. And sales are slipping for a good reason. People are catching on that they're being spoon fed bowls of crap for beats and lyrics. Not everyone...but some people out there must be scratching their heads and asking themselves "whatever happened to groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest or Pharcyde?"
In the underground hip hop scene...it doesn't all sound the same...and I'm glad people on here have commented on some pretty good groups or artists...but the people that come on this board and make comments like "rap sucks" or "I hate rap" are saying that because they've only heard what's being forced on them. Its sad to see that rap has gotten to this point...where people have almost forgotten about DJ's B-boys Graffiti artists and beat boxers (do people think that JT is good at that?:whatever: )

I understand what you're saying, but the fact remains that person a, such as you or myself could very easily say that "real" hip hop is KRS-ONE, Eric B. & Rakim or on and on.
Where another person could say that i's all about the south, mid west, etc etc.
I completely agree with (with the exception that people are catching on, not that they aren't just not in massive numbers IMHO), everything you're saying and I share very smiliar views. It may not be very good Rap music, but it still is an indeed is Hip Hop.
Real by definition would make it reality, and sadly it is.

I tend to cringe when I see their albums in the Hip Hop section of my local record store. They turned me off with this whole 'signing to an emo label' ish and not really associating themselves with hip hop acts in general.
For The Kids and parts of the Papercut Chronicles are cool, though.

I listen to them, I don't really consider them Rap music, but they have songs that are cool to dance to without being part of the overly played out rap genre that is dominant right now.

Oh for the love of GOD! You haven't even tapped the surface of the musial journey that Outkast will take you on.
Sourtherplayalistic, ATLiens and Aquemini are very possibly the best string of albums put together by any Rap group let alone any musical group ever. IMHO.
Of course if you are a fan of their stuff now....well you may not be as big of a fan of their earlier works. I started listening to them when they came out and as I got older they also progressed their style.
All three albums, hands down are five mic worthy, and I of course am referrring to when The Source's mic rating actually meant something, when Nas' Illmatic was one of the very few to receive five mics, along with Aquemini.
There are many Rap albums out there that you would also be a fool not to buy, but no one can argue against these three albums. IMHO, pick them up asap!

Referring to Common Sense, good point
I can understand that, but what they brought to the table as a group from the south pretty much with the image of playa's and pimps, they still had a unique sound, flow and something to say.

I Get Money Remix With Jay-Z, Kanye & Diddy In The Works?
http://nahright.com/news/wp-content/images/screamfest1.jpg
From what I hear, 50, Diddy, Jay-Z and Kanye all recorded verses for a remix to “I Get Money.” But with this much starpower involved, there’s more diplomatic negotiation to deal with than a UN Peace Treaty. Who gets first shine? When will this song get released? Who does it benefit the most? Will both Kanye and 50 get dibs on the record?…….These questions need to be addressed…because, for example, it wouldn’t make sense for Kanye to help promote 50’s project.
Full Story @ MissInfo.Tv
Not too sure about this one, Jay-Z didn’t look to happy with 50’s cameo and how will this help Kanye. Would be a good look for Hip Hop to have the top money makers working together.

Diddy Confirms Billon Dollar Remix with Hov, 'Ye and Curtis (http://www.missinfo.tv/?p=248)
Tonite I went to watch the live taping of the Making the Band Finale over in the fiery depths of hell…..aka Times Square. And I’m not gonna dance around this….I would have never gone to this event on my own. I would have been perfectly happy finding out tomorrow (or honestly, whenever I caught a rerun) who made the final cut on the 4th incarnation of this modern day Menudo. But I was asked to cover the event for work, so you can check out the webvideo of my interview with Diddy, Danity Kanye and the new boy band later this week at Hot97.com.
But you know what…my cynical, jaded ass was kinda won over by these fresh-faced fellas. All 10 of the finalists seemed genuinely talented and shockingly likeable. They didn’t give us all the ignorant entertaining antics of that other Making the Band band…what were they even called? The one with Babs, Choppa and the other guys? (so much for spitting that “hot fiyah” lol). And that choreographer Laurie Ann still thinks she was the “show.” So congrats to the newly formed [Insert Name Here] band—Robert, Brian, Big Mike, Q, and Will. Good luck guys. You’ll need it: )
But more importantly…..while I was talking to Diddy, he confirmed to me what I posted about that “I Get Money” remix, featuring him, Hov and 50. Diddy called it the Billion Dollar remix but he couldnt say whether Kanye’s verse would ever be cleared. Thanks for keeping it real, Puff.

9 tracks in:
Lyrically, it seems like it's lacking on this first listen. And it's a little synth crazy, though that seems to give the record a universal sound. But I'm telling you, I haven't listened to many records where the production just grabbed me by the throat this hard. It's the type of big, hyped record that at least from a production standpoint sounds as big as it's purported to be.
EDIT: Oh, and f*** Lil Wayne's grandmother soundin' ass.

Overproduced? Possibly.
The second half of the album seems to be less synth happy and more classic West production-wise. The lyrics were kinda overshadowed over the first group of tracks but things are kinda scaled back with "Everything I Am" and "Glory". Don't know if this is a College Dropout type of classic, but it's a enjoyable record at the very least. Up to track 12....
Cmill216
08-31-2007, 01:27 AM
...And after ragging on the lyrics, he goes and delivers "Big Brother". His delivery here is outstanding and it's a really fascinating journey into his relationship with Jay:
"'Round the same time as that Blueprint 1 / And these beats in my pocket was that blueprint for him"
"I'd play my little songs in that old back room / He'd bop his head and say, 'Oh, that's you?'"
"I guess Big Brother was thinking a little different / And kept little brother at bay at a distance"
"On that 'Diamonds' remix, I swore I spazzed / Then Big Brother came through and kicked my ass"
"I told Jay I did a song with Coldplay / Next thing I know he got a song with Coldplay / Back of my mind I'm like '...Damn, no way'"
"Big Brother saw me at the bottom of the totem / Now I'm on the top and everybody on the scrotum"
And it doesn't hurt that the beat on that track is, once again, ridiculous.
It'll be interesting to see how this record stacks up after a few more listens over time, but I can definitely say that the first listen was a very enjoyable one. Ye's beats here are absolutely outstanding (f***, if he laced Lupe with an album like this that thing would be the second coming).
I wasn't overly impressed by the lyrics, though a few more listens should pull it all together.
Put this album on the best sound system around you, and you'll probably melt it.

So far, it's good. I'm only half-way through it, but Ye is definitely looking to be on par as his previous efforts. The tone is more in line with LR than CD, so that might be a problem for some others. I must admit I'm sad that Ye is straying away from the more gritty/old-school tracks.

What was gritty about college dropout
Gritty in terms of low-key production and/or more emphasis on the flow & lyrics. Two Words and Get Em High for example. Through The Wire also to a lesser extent.
Ye's producing is still top-notch, but I feel with his last 2 albums the production sort of has taken in it's own life, and overshadows everything else. I was hoping he'd go for a blend of both CD/LR, but it seems he's sticking with the more "musical" approach.

09-02-2007, 06:05 PM
Graduation doesnt really have a direction like the last two. The lack of skits is a good thing but by the same token you dont feel he's made it a concept record like the last one. Seems more like a compilation with some records sounding like his early work (Glory, Champion) and others like the bold style of LR (Stronger, Cant Tell me Nothing, Homecoming). Still knocks better than Curtis though...

Who's taking L's? Last I heard his album went to number 1 and is on 900,000, he's on tour with Wu-Tang, Kweli and Monch, he got everyone talking about a subject that fans have been begging them rappers to address in the mainstream for years, he got a multi-million dollar Def Jam deal, more people showed him love at his birthday party than hate over his album title. Jim Jones just said he wants work with him, Nore is cool with him, him and Mega are cool and he got everyone talking about his V-Tech show, he got a shoe deal and a documentary series on MTV. Even when he aint considered the hottest like on the MTV thing, he gets put runner up and whole piece is written on his inclusion ( I see you Shaeem Reid and Rahman Dukes). Half the quotes on SOHH about people talking about him were false (TI, Boosie, Banner), UGK and Chamillionnaire and Trick Daddy gave him props on HHID stance. Now Curtis the dude who has been doing ANYTHING to push his ablum might wanna work with him?
Esco won. Why are you believing SOHH?

I don't even go on that site anymore. :o
But you don't think him sidin' with 50 is an L? Maybe if this was back in '02, when people actually liked Fif, but not now. Especially not after all the **** they've said to each other.
People were already criticizing him for signing UNDER a dude that f'd his baby momma. He'll get even more **** for teaming up with the rap world's most hated ego.

You know what? We're talking about two different songs. The my first quote was from Nastradamus. Then my last quote was from "Esco '97" or whatever that song was from Men In Black soundtrack.
