It's not music, it's just people talking fast. Thugs talking fast about thug things. All about the image, the flash, the bling. "Look at me. I'm a stupid, worthless, thug muthaforker but I got me a lambrghini, a ho on each arm and 500 carats of bling on my watch." Responsible for the "thugization" of the country.
Words can not express the hatred I feel towards rap.
Yo!!! Dead ass Tupac! Bite' "dis".
Congrats, your flaccid brain just proves how much of an ignorant little punk you are. You know nothing about rap music and the hiphop community. If anything you should "blame" white America, do some research and you'll know why. I refuse to satisfy and condone your ignorance by explaining it to someone so belligerant, only to have it obtusely dismissed by someone who's content in being discombobulated as opposed to understanding and maybe appreciating the art of rap for what it is.
How about you drop the six' and put a 9 to your head. :o

Well, the American MTV2 is starting to get like MTV. It's pretty sad how corrupted MTV has become. The original intent was to give artists shunned by the Pop scene a forum for their music.
I don't even bother w/ MTV or MTV2 anymore. They're both full of nothing but Real World/Road Rules re-runs. I used to have MTV X, which was nothing but rock, but they replaced that w/ MTV Jamz. Can you belive that MTV actually replaced rock videos w/ the only videos they even show anymore? Who would have thought.

I say let MTV saturate the airwaves with one style of music. Pretty soon people will get sick of it and lead to a revolution to balance everything out like they did when disco saturated the airwaves in the 70's.

I agree with your statement, but I'm not sure you should say all the white people don't know a thing about rap. I mean I'm white and I listen to Nas, Tupac, Biggie, Public Enemy etc. Forgive me if I misunderstood what you're trying to say.

In fact, I was saying that white people are a huge influence in the huge growth, expansion and popularity of rap music today.Really to be honest white people are really the down fall of rap IMO. I mean even rappers admit it I remember a few of them saying that when you cross over to the white crowd you will start to see a decline in sales from blacks which is true. Because most blacks look at rap like its our own thing like most whites look at country and heavy meatl and grunge and rock as theirs. So when we see a person really of ther other race picking up that persons album we turn our ear to something new. Hint: Reason why Underground Rap is so big right now.

God, how pathetic if that's true. I'm not "my race". I'm an individual, and when I hear music that I like, then, I LIKE it, so I buy it and listen to it. I couldn't give a **** what eveyone else thinks.
I'm in a Rock band. You think I've changed my sound or gotten embarrassed when we've had Black fans come to the shows? No.

Musical racists are funny. Like, they say "You can't play real blues if you're white." and I wanna say, "Yeah, and Yoyo Ma can't play classical very well because it's European music and Jimi Hendrix was a sucky Rock guitarist because he's Black."
What a load of horsecrap.

I know but thats how it is looked upon. I mean rap is more or less now looked upon as music for the streets hint: reason why people still talk about being poor and all. So now when the music is not looked upon as just for the streeets anymore we find something or someone new to like till the same thing happens to that.

Are you kidding?? Rap didn't fall off when puffy started bringing out the shiny suits, sure, hiphop became more comercial which was a good thing at the time but you have to understand that this was aftermath of the "east coast vs west coast" thing......and do you know how many units puffy's no way album sold?? Once things calmed down, people wanted the rough ****, they wanted more reasonable doubt type albums being dropped on the streets.
If rap did fall it was before puffy came out with the shny suits, maybe puffy helped s some sort of subconscious catalyst but he in no way perpetuated the downfall.

I see where your comming from but you need to sit down and listen to biggie, dont hear him but listen to him, dude was colossal. Have you heard this track called, a man with a gun fet biggie, jay-z and joell ortiz? Biggie killed it and that verse alone establishes why lyrically and flow-wise bigie was the untouchable god-like beast.
[Biggie Smalls]
I'm hard, Jehovah said I'm barred from the pearly gates
**** him, I didn't want to go to Heaven anyway
But my momma got me on my knees with my hands gripped
Talking ‘bout some praise the lord ****
Hail Mary, **** her, I never knew her
I'd probably screw her, and dump her body in the sewer
Our Father – My pops stuck up dope spots
Big black and mean with the fifth by the gabardine
What you expected from his next of kin?
I'm loco bro, but ain't no Mexican
I got nines in the bedroom, glocks in the kitchen
A shotty by the shower if you wanna shoot me while I'm ****tin
The lesson from the Smith and Wessun is depressin
*****s keep stressin, the same mother****in question
How many shots does it take, to make my heart stop
and my body start to shake?
Then dont even get me started on his story telling, both his ready to die and life after death albums are just sick, even in this day and age. A particular favourite of mine is, kick in the door, that track was a lyrically, colossal assasination.
kick in the door
Your reign on the top was short like leprechauns
As I crush so-called willies, thugs, and rapper-dons
Get in that ass, quick fast, like ramadan
Its that rap phenomenon Don-Dadda, **** Poppa
You got ta, call me, Francis M.H. White
in tank-light totes, tote iron
Was told in shootouts, stay low, and keep firin
Keep extra clips for extra ****
Who's next to flip, on that cat with that grip on rap
The mo shady, "Tell em!", Frankie baby
Ain't no tellin where I may be
May see me in D.C. at Howard Homecomin
with my man Capone, dumbin, ****in somethin
You should know my steelo
Went from ten G's for blow to thirty G's a show
to orgies with hoes I never seen befo'
so, Jesus, get off the Notorious
penis, before I squeeze and bust
If the beef between us, we can settle it
With the chrome and metal ****
I make it hot, like a kettle get
You're delicate, you better get, who sent ya?
You still pedal ****, I got more rides than Great Adventure
Biggie, "How are you gonna do it?"
[Chorus: repeat 4X]
Kick in the door, wavin the four-four
All you heard was Poppa don't hit me no more
[Verse Two:]
On ya mark, get set, when I spark, ya wet
Look how dark it get, when ya marked with death
Should I start your breath should I let you die
In fear you start to cry, ask why
Lyrically, I'm worser, don't front the word sick
You cursed it, but rehearsed it
I drop unexpectedly like bird ****
You herbs get, stuck quickly for royalties and show money
Don't forget the publishin, I punish em, I'm done with them
Son, I'm surprised you run with them
I think they got cum in them, cause they, nothin but *****
Tryin to blow up like nitro and dynamite sticks
Mad I smoke hydro rock diamonds, that's sick

I notice nobody put down any females. Maybe we need a top ten favorite female rappers thread.
1. Q. Latifah
2. Yo-Yo
3. MC Lyte
4. Angie Martinez
5. Rah Digga
6. Eve
7. Lil' Kim
8. Trina
9. Salt 'n Pepa
10. Da Brat
I don't know if I'd put Angie in there.... she was never a rapper... she just hung out with a bunch of them.
Foxy... Early Kim.... hell Bohamadia for the 2 minutes she had a record.

I would really like for someone to explain to me how a classic album, a mediocre double-album and a series of hit & miss guest spots is enough to make anyone the best emcee let alone be on the top ten list?
And yes, I mean Biggie Smalls. It's like when hockey fans say Mario Lemeuix was better than Gretzky based on potential.

From the late 80's rap and punk rock were hand in hand in underground clubs. And now both are commercialized to death in this country. Its so sad to see rap now. Everyone sounds the same!!!!They might as well as put on black face and start tap dancing. That is how silly it has gotten (with few exceptions of course, Nas, Kanye, Common, Mos Def, Older and more mature Jay-Z and others i can't think of right now)
I love the rap artists who stayed true to themselves and didn't get sucked in to the whole "gangster" persona. My favorite artists and i recommend to anyone who loves true hip hop-
The Pharcyde
Da Bush-Babees
Tribe Called Quest
The Roots
Slick Rick
Rakim
Original Flavor
Eric Sermon and Parish Smith
Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth
KRSone
Those are just off the top of my head.

Nah.. I know you posted your opinion... which is why I replied that it was all a matter of taste. I'd say BIG gets play for not only his small body of work but the influence Ready To Die had on so many artists.
Sometimes one classic album can outlast artists, genre's, videos, musical culture.
And if he is glorified it's cause of that reason you pointed out... he's always being ripped off.
I haven't gone through the whole thread, but has anyone mentioned MF DOOM(aka Viktor Vaughn). I got into him in a big way last summer, and he's put out nothing but hotness since! Madvillain, Viktor Vaughn 2: Venomous Villain, MM FOOD, all certified bangers! Next, he's got a CD with DJ Danger Mouse (together as DangerDoom) and he's also working with Ghostface Killah. Are you stoned? The Beastie Boys HELPED make Rap what it is today. They helped usher in a whole new audience, good or bad, and brought rap to the mainstream alongside RUn DMC and Cool J.
Anyone stating the Beasties ae overrated must be under 16. This group had a profound impact on rap music. It became even more accessible to suburban youth broadeing the audience that listens to rap music and gives other artists a chance. They were one of the very first groups to marry rap and rock and make it work. Look at each album they put out, they are always evolving. Ganted some of their stuff I really do not like but it is pure ignorance to call them overrated.

I could not agree more Highlander. Rap music today is all about catchy bets and how many sneakers you can sell. 50 sucks, the guy can hardly speak in coherent sentences let alone "flow" and his music lacks ANY substance.
Biggie, always hated him and never understood why he became so popular after he was gone. Look at some of these artists that have done well over the last decade, it is all about singles now, not bodies of work. Black Eyed Peas were not all that popular at all until they added the manly looking Fegie and had the one single played at every sports arena across the country. Had they not gone pop with "Let's get it started" they would still be a small time group.
I miss the days of old man, I do.

For someone who's been listening to rap music for aout 20 years or so, how can you say Biggie made "pop" music. Have you actually listened to RTD and LAD, those aren't commercial albums and biggie was 1 of the few rappers tha personified what rap music was all about.
Seeing as we're on this matter, I've said it before and I'll say it again.
The difference between rap and hiphop? rap is the music, hiphop is the culture.
As for 50cent, he's garbage, nothing but hype and in genral is a weak mcee, as for Bigie Smalls, he's either takes the number 1 spot or number 2, in my eyes, he's number 1. How many mcees, sample his lyrics? How many of biggies lines does Jay attribute to his own tracks? How many mcees out there can make tracks from '94 and still bang 'em out today like it was released about a month ago? As the song goes, Biggie Smalls is the illest. If anyone has doubts, I dare anyone to listen to a track he did called, the wickedest and then come back and tell me he's pop or was mediocre or shouldn't be in the top 10 or whatever some people said.

He shouldn't make fun of people less fortunate them him.:o:downSeriously, Housing Projects doesnt equate to black people who listen to rap or criminals. It's nothing but stereotypes and subdued racism when people say to watch yourself in those neighborhoods. I live right by one of the MOST infamous and dangerous housing projects not only in Chicago but in America, and I know more good people who live there than there is criminals. It's ignorant and stupid for the kid to try to relate crime to lower income housing. Criminals are EVERYWHERE. Some CEO's of prominent companies are criminals, which means his daddy could be a criminal. Housing Projects relate to one's financial standing in life....not their race. One should not lood down on others who are less fortunate...rather lend a helping hand to a fellow brother in need. That's just one of the aspects wrong in today's world.

He wasn't a hypocrite in the slightest. Mase actually is a hypocrite. He raps about his new found trust in god. What is he going to do when he goes to G-Unit? Rap about hanging with nuns, while Fifty and company rap about busting nines, and slinging rock?

don't intend to get into the typical rap argument, because it tends to run the gamet in terms of ignorance and idiocy. but here's some of the rap artists i enjoy:
A Tribe Called Quest
Blackalicious
DMX
The Roots
Young Buck
Nas(the g.o.a.t., if you ask me)
Biggie Smalls
KRS One
50 Cent
Mobb Deep
Talib Kweli

Mase was raw when he was with children of the corn. Then Puff told him to tone it down and do the shiny suit thing. Then he went to the god thing. Havent you ever changed how you feel about things? Plus when he did the Lean Back remix he fit in with that and had the best verse.

Black Eyed Peas were not all that popular at all until they added the manly looking Fegie and had the one single played at every sports arena across the country. Had they not gone pop with "Let's get it started" they would still be a small time group.
I miss the days of old man, I do.
BEP's pre-sellout were the shizzle!!! Then they went pop with where is the love, added a female and ....yuck.
Interesting note.....Black Eyed Peas were discovered by Easy E and were originally signed to Ruthless Records.

Addendum
09-02-2005, 03:43 PM
Old-school rap is brilliant stuff. When I hear an artist from that era whom I've never heard before, I enjoy it immensly. I personally didn't like the "gangsta rap" boom of the late 80's and early 90's. "Yo MTV raps" was a great show, but the influx of the newest fad killed it. While my collection of rap is small, at least the Vice City soundtrack has an old-school rap cd, from which I can discover groups I missed out on during my childhood.

^ What's your favourite Nas album?
My order
1. It was Written (most diverse)
2. Stillmatic (comeback and he had that fire on it)
3. God Son (got personal on the CD and Made You Look is a banger)
4. Illmatic (Classic)
The Storm

Made You Look one of my favourite Nas tunes. I loved Stillmatic when it came out, I played it everyday. I haven't actually heard any of his other albums my brother had It Was Written but at the time I wasn't into Nas.

I actually was going to follow this up with a funny joke about an irish rapper, but it seems to have lost its humor with me, so not going to share now ;)
Anybody remember The Get Fresh Crew?
Rap music in the early 80's was pretty comical in terms of its content. Not all the serious F YOU UP crap we have nowadays. Granted it has toned down quite a bit since the gangsta days.
My Favorite ap artists are old schooler. Cool J, Eric B & Rakim and Run DMC top the list. Big Daddy Kane was cool and Boogie Down Productions had a strong message. Public Enemy was good but the anti white message they put out at times bugged me. Mr F was just a cracked out freak but he was fun to watch at times. Chuck D strong performer with a strong voice. I used to like Too Short as he was fu to listen too in a juvenile sort of way, liked him until I met him. he is an ass hole.

thing is, people jump into the bandwagon which is right now for hip hop; beats that will make you jump or shake your booty with lyrics that rhyme with buns and gun.
Everyone who only listens to underground complains about the fact that MTV and BET only shows terrible songs so they just ignore the channels and just listen to the songs they like on they're CD player or computer. I want more diversity when it comes to hip hop, I want to see music videos by Nas, KRS-1, Rakim, AZ, Mos Def on BET or MTV or Muchmusic. It further's the belief that the East Coast is dying, it's not just in the record sales ( Other than 50 and Banks no rapper has gone platinum from NY and the mixtape the very thing that energised the East Coast with Kay Slay mixtapes featuring Beans-Jada and Nas-Jay beef in 2001 is redudant and boring with overhyped artists like Maino, Papoose, Stack Bundles, Jae Millz and Dipset) As a result they comprimise for that hot garbage. How can people sweat that **** when Little Brother, AZ, Saigon around.

'Bis carries a thesaurus with him everytime he spits. :o
The problem w/ Can-I-Bus is that he over-intellectualizes his lyrics. I have no problem w/ that cuz I listen to sxxx like Ras Kass, but for the average mainstream idiot, it's going to confuse them. The reason he doesn't get any mainstream props is because he's too didactic.

That's sad. I put on M.O.P.'s latest in the car with my little cousin, and he was like, "what are u listening to, rock?" Because most of their songs have guitar riffs in the background, and he's used to that processed sampled **** that the mainstream radios play.

Yeah it's an Ill album. AZ's nice. Not as good as his AZiatic LP.
I checked out Little Brother's new album and it's dope. There's a lot of talk going about how XXL were gonna give them a "XXL" and the Source was gonna give them 4.5 Mics. But Benzino said no at the source (apperantly Lil' Kim's **** got 5 mics and Zino reduced LB's album to 4 mics saying Young Jeezy deserved more. As a result the Source Editor walked out). As for XXL they were worried about giving an underground that high a rating, so they gave there sister publication Scratch (A more undergorund/beatmaker orientated mag) the review and Scratch gave it 10/10.
Don't Sleep on Little Brother's Minstrel Show when it drops on the 12th. Them dudes have been dropping some great music the last 2 years (Plus, there first album the Listening is a classic)

I was watching TRL a couple minutes ago, and it showed a clip of Kayne West and Mike Myers at a relief fund program.... anyone else see it? Kayne was hella harsh, especially when he said "Bush hates black people." Damn, that was emotional.

Yeah, they have a thread on it somewhere in the SHH Community Forum. I've already commented on it, but I will say that Kanye is gonna catch a lot of flack on that.
P.S. I hope that Jin gets a chance to make a serious album w/out all that A&R'ing B.S.

As in Little Brother are the most talked about Hip Hop group and they dropping another classic LP and people still on that Jin (aka Yao Ming and Canibus' lovechild). Everybody on all Hip Hop forums and underground fans talking about the LB. They producer 9th Wonder did some stuff on Jay-Z's Black Album and Nas' God Son. His style is on some Pete Rock meets Kanye ish

He changed his mind. That dude doesn't know what he wants. If he wants to be the first mainstream asian rapper, he's got a lot of work to do now.

The guy has his own style and raps better than all of these mainstream rappers put together. AWOL is fire and I find it better than Aziatic. Nas is a incredible rapper and he's my all time favourite but I don't find AZ copying Nas, his style is more similar to Kool G Rap.

Agreed,
AZ when he wants can be a little more diverese. ironically back in 95 people used to say Jigga was a AZ clone. I similarites in AZ and Early Jay-Z (Circa 94-2000) than I do Nas

Like 2 years on the Loon diss and Last week on the 300 shots. As far as Cam, he can't talk cause he squashed the Beef with Mason and now giving him props. SMH@ both of those Harlem Hermafrodites
