Exactly. It's like believing Jay is really some huge drug dealer or 50 Cent actually has beef with everybody under the sun. It garners attention and sells records. Anyone who believes it's real is naive.

Every other rapper in the history of the game has said that. Especially back when talent actually mattered...

Jay-z was a (big) drug dealer, Just listen to Reasonable doubt. He raps about it realisticly on that album. Of course not every single word is true but i believe most of what he said on Reasonable doubt.

I hope Puff learned his lesson about manufacturing bands through televised contests. You don't grab a bunch of strangers, put them in direct competition with one another, then select the handful you like most and expect them to click just because they happen to be the most talented. It didn't work for Da Band, and now 2/3 of Danity Kane are gone.

the 3rd world is really good. technique has always been amazing but he's really come a long way. his lyrics were always hot but his flow has improved quite a bit and his beats have gotten more professional as he's gained more recognition and the help of green lantern for this album.

I think Common is MORE focused on his acting career than his music these days....

Manic
12-03-2008, 08:50 PM
It happens to every music performer who gets into acting and becomes even slightly successful at it. They realize they can make more money from filming movies than they can from recording albums. With music, he has to write everything, work directly with producers, rent out studio space and duke out cash for promotions, ect. In the end, if your CD sells 1,000,000 copies, you'll be left with the yearly earnings of a McDonalds fry-cook.

OR you get to memorize no more than a couple of hours worth of dialogue, fake a few emotions, and do whatever a dude sitting in a fold-up chair tells you for a couple of months, and you've got yourself enough money for a new car from making a single movie.

It's the reason why Ice Cube only records new CDs once every 5 years, Ashanti stopped "singing," and LL Cool J hasn't really tried since releasing 1995's Mr. Smith. You can actually watch LL's music to acting ratio switch around, depending on how popular his movies are. Deep Blue Sea was a fun movie, but "Deepest, Bluest" was a piece of crap.

Agreed.

I'm not a huge fan of the song either, but it'd be foolish to ignore such a massive hit for the genre and insertion into pop culture. Categorically speaking, Crank Dat did deserve to be nominated.

The only thin soulja boy deserves is a slow and horrendous death.

Weezy can actually flow, he's not brilliant though. I class him as a pop star not a rap star. He is just "playing" gangstar!

* American Gangster
Jay-Z
[Roc-A-Fella]

* Tha Carter III
Lil Wayne
[Cash Money/Universal Motown]

* The Cool
Lupe Fiasco
[1st & 15th/Atlantic]

* Untitled
Nas
[Def Jam]

* Paper Trail
T.I.
[Grand Hustle/Atlantic]

Best Rap Song

* Lollipop

* Low

* Sexual Eruption

* Superstar

* Swagga Like Us

Best Rap Solo Performance

* Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)...
Jay-Z

* A Milli
Lil Wayne

* Paris, Tokyo
Lupe Fiasco

* N.i.*.*.e.r. (The Slave And The Master)
Nas

* Sexual Eruption
Snoop Dogg

And.... Tha Carter III was nominated for overall Album of the Year.

This is why i don't listen to any new hip hop. It's just all pop music with no real meaning or soul. Lupe is the boy, Snoop is a legend even though he's now gone pop. But T.I and Lil Wayne? They are the definition of what is wrong with hip hop today, for me at least. They don't give a toss about the music, they just wanna pretend they are gangsters and all that crap. Real gangsters wouldn't be telling everyone that they are gangsters would they? :whatever:

I got love for the game but ay, I'm not in love with all of it,
Could do without the fame and the rappers nowadays are comedy.
The hootin' and the hollerin', back and forth with the arguing,
Where you from, who you know, what you make and what kind of car you in.
Seems as though you lost sight of what's important with the positive,
And checks into your bank account, and you up out of poverty.
Your values is a disarray, prioritizing horribly.
Unhappy with the riches cause you piss poor morally.
Ignoring all prior advice and forewarning,
And we mighty full of ourselves all of a sudden, aren't we?

I love Food & Liquor more than The Cool. Lyrically, The Cool was better, but the lyrics coupled with the beats in Food & Liquor made it better for me.

Article: Scottish
House of Pain: Irish

I wouldn't be surprised if the article was right, although it'd have to be through some vague level of cultural osmosis (where people learn traditions without knowing). The medieval Scots had a tradition where two men would trade insults, and the tradition gets passed down to American cultural. Thus, when rap is invented, that back-and-forth insult thing is adapted, and rap battles are born.

The article doesn't claim rap was invented in Scotland. Just verbal battles.

Right, because why the hell would you read more than just the title? It's not like the body of the article contains any real information. :whatever:

When you read the actual article, all it says is that Scotland originated the concept of "flyting" or trading insults in a contest, which is remarkably similar to rap battles. The title is just purposely misleading, so people will say "WTF?!" and read it.

Technically, this is true, but the writer of the article is reaching a bit. Scottish flyting is responsible for rap battles in the same way romantic poetry is responsible for rock ballads. It's an old tradition that was passed down over and over until it was unrecognizably adapted into an all new medium.

But I seriously doubt when two guys on a street corner of the Bronx or Shaolin are battlin' they are thinking "Oh yea this was originally from Scotland".

Manic

That's why I mentioned cultural osmosis. Cultural osmosis is the unconscious passing of traditions or knowledge. People in the US have been trading barbs for bragging rights for years. That's flyting, which has roots in Scotland. Flyting is an element of rap battles.

His ultimate conclusion is bull, but the way he reached it has truth in it.

Agreed. I don't really buy new hip hop albums any more, most of them are crap. I buy all the old classics like 36 chambers and mecca and the soul brother and all eyes on me. It's like as soon as the year 2000 hit hip hop has been in a decline. But there is still some good artists out there like Lupe and Kanye (if you can get over the fact he is a complete prick!)

Yeah, the guy is really humble and such. He sits at his merch booth at shows and just hangs out, I've gone up to him at a few shows and talked to him for hours about rapping, how he got started, industry tricks for better sounds, **** like that. Smoked a few fatass blunts of medicinal MJ with him too last time I saw him. He's really down to just chill with real fans, and the bigass black guy that raps with him is just as cool if not cooler. The dude (1-ton, big black guy) gave me a free Potluck (their group) jersey because I told him I spent hours looking for and subsequently picked up their first CD from a mom and pop's store. He said something like "wow, that's real dedication man, here take a jersey and come smoke a blunt with us".

Gotta love people like that.

anybody on here heard of la coka nostra?

i've been a fan of everlast since the house of pain days, up through whitey ford sings the blues, and eat at whitey's, altho his 2 albums after that weren't all that great. he seemed to be getting further and further away from hip hop, which is why i was psyched to see him get back together with danny boy and dj lethal from house of pain, along with several others, to form this new group called la coka nostra. ill bill is in there, he's pretty nasty to those who know him, along with slaine and big left both of whom are pretty decent but i don't know much about em. anyway, these tracks are definitely worth checkin out if you're a fan of any of these dudes individually cuz they make for quite a hip hop supergroup. pretty nasty stuff.

i suggest ya'll check out the following tracks, all of which are available on youtube:

+ this is war
+ i'm an american (ft. b-real)
+ that's coke
+ get outta my way

lil wayne has been all over the place as of late. all over the radio and the tv and magazines, but it might work against him. eminem's encore came out in 2004 and then he had curtain call and the re-up but those don't really count, so em's been out of the public eye for a while while it's true his stuff hasn't been as good as he used to, the average listener is still gonna want to hear his latest **** so i say em will easily outsell lil wayne.

I don't want him to fully get rid of it all cause he has better subject matter now though I prefer his old flow WAY better. His old flow constraint him from delivering any message cause it was very reliant on specific rhyme schemes where as he is more off the wallish now to then.
