Like 2 years on the Loon diss and Last week on the 300 shots. As far as Cam, he can't talk cause he squashed the Beef with Mason and now giving him props. SMH@ both of those Harlem Hermafrodites
Yeah but what the hell is mase on, he cant be for real? Dude comes off about how hiphop needs some positivity and now he leaves badboy because they weren't allowing him to move in the direction he wanted to go so he links up with G-u**** and starts rapping about licking off shots?
Some might say he's just keeping it real but I hink its retarded, dude obviously cant stand by his own convictions.

Personally I don't give a fruck as long as it means the old' Murda Mase from Harlem 125th comes back

i enjoy most genres of music but i have to say that hip hop reigns supreme in my playlist.
lately ive been listening to the dangerdoom album (dangermouse and mf doom), slug and murs felt 2, kanye west late registration, ghostface supreme clientele (classic), z trip shifting gears, the new zion i album, and aesop rock's fast cars is pretty clean
but yea hip hop is still very much alive and evolving....you just gotta know where to look. theres some innovative artists out there. gorillaz always have fresh emcees on their albums and nice production, and anything kanye touches is gold. dan the automator and prince paul as well....rjd2 is dope too. also i think one of the best battle rappers right now is qwel from typical cats. crown city rockers is a really good if youre into live instrumentation hip hop.

I'd like for mase to return to his old style before puff tamed him but not under these circumstances. Mase definately looks like an idiot after saying the things he did even on his welcome back album and now look at what dude is doing. Straight off the bat ude said he'd find middle ground once he was with G-unit and he's already failed right there.
Like I said, I'm all for murder mase to return but I just would have liked it better had it been due to better circumstances.
In regards to Loon's diss, are you talking about, "you aint a rider"? coz thats not 2 years old btw.

Its weird, the guy leaves rap to become a pastor, and then leaves that to be a gangsta rapper? very hypocritical

the songs i've been listening to right now is:

Son Of Logan, aka Connor MacLeod's Top 10 Emcee's:
Based on skill and body of work...
1. KRS-One: No one has been around as long or had as much impact. Classic albums include Criminal Minded (BDP), By Any Means Necessary(BDP), Ghetto Music: A Blueprint of HipHop(BDP), Edutainment(BDP), Return of the Boom Bap, I Got Next, & The Sneak Attack.
2. Rakim: Classic flow, major influence to Nas. Literally changed the way emcee's rhymed. Classic albums include Paid in Full, Follow the Leader, Let The Rhythm Hit'em, The 18th Letter.
3. Chuck D: The leader of Public Enemy was not the most skilled flow-wise, but his talent lies in the way he delivers knowledge while keeping you open and receptive. Also has been in the game a loooong time. His impact on hiphop has been phenomenal. Classics include Yo! Bum Rush The Show, Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, Fear Of A Black Planet, Apocalpsye '91. Also, do not sleep on the album There's A Poison Going On.
4. Ice Cube: Definitely the greatest to come from the left coast. Cube was a success as member of a group and a solo artist. He was able to not only capture the anger and frustration of a generation, we was able to make it coherent and intelligent, something which a lot of "gansta" rappers and gangsta rap wannabes fail to do. Classics include Straight Outta Compton (NWA), Amerikka's Most Wanted, Kill At Will, Lethal Injection, Death Certificate, & The Predator.
5. LL Cool J: He was the pinnical of old school hiphop and managed to stay in the game long after the new school emerged. His delivery was unmatched. He has mellowed over time but if you want authentic LL listen to his early work. Classics include Radio, Bigger & Deffer, Walking With A Panther, & 14 Shots To The Dome. Yeah, Mama Said Knock You Out had some good songs on it too. Don't sleep on Uncle L.
6.Scarface: Scarface brought all his tales of the dope game to the table. But what made them and him shine was the emotion he managed to put into his flow. Scarface really made you feel like you were right there with him. Classics include We Can't Be Stopped (Geto Boys), Till Death Do Us Part (Geto Boys), Mr. Scarface Is Back, The World Is Yours, The Diary, Untouchable, Last Of A Dying Breed.
7. Nas: Nas was the realization of the New School's potential. When Illmatic dropped it was an instant classic. The first time you heard it you were blown away. Classics include Illmatic, It Was Written, I Am..., & God's Son.
8. Jay Z: Personally, I am not a Jay fan. But you cannot front on his flow and his impact on hiphop. Actually, one of the things messing up the music is the amount of emcees trying to mimic Jay Z. Classics include Reasonable Doubt, In My Lifetime, Hard Knock Life, & The Blueprint.
9. Tupac: At the same time overrated and underrated. Tupac had an incredible style. He is the most imitated emcee ever. At the same time though, he showed very little versatility. His career started with positive anthems with a message and ended with dark, brooding social commentary flavored by "gansta" rap. Classics include 2Pacalypse Now, Strictly For My N.I.G.G.A.Z., Me Against The World, All Eyez On Me, & Makaveli.
10. Redman: Gotta give it to Reggie Noble. His flow is tremendous. His whiney ass voice is just perfect for his flow and subject matter. Major influence on current emcees. Classics include Whut Thee Album?, Dare Is A Dark Side, Muddy Waters, Doc's Da Name 2000, Blackout (w/ Method Man) & Malpractice.
That's my opinions. Many other rappers deserve an honorable mention.

Number 11. And one of the main influences on my own style. I did not forget him. :) Like I said there are plenty of others who warrant consideration for that list. Road To The Riches, Wanted Dead Or Alive and Live & Let Die Are three of my favorite albums.
The Ether

thats nice to hear. but you still didn't rank big as well, and i don't consider LL cool J as one of the top ten. he helped creating rap popular but i find all of his recent songs to bring him down ex: hush. and i believed that canibus beat him:)

I definitely think Canibus beat the crap out of him on the mike. But I pointed out tht L's influence was in his earlier work. He definitely has had a slide.
As for Biggie. I mentioned in this forum that I don't really think he had the body of work to justify ranking him in a top ten. Again... somewhere in the top 20.
What do you think of the Guru? He's gotta be up there somewhere too.
Who does everyone think the illest freestylers are?
The Ether
09-07-2005, 12:50 PM
yeah Canibus really did own L
but for Biggie, this man influenced a lot of rappers today, in fact if he was still alive, people wouldn't consider jay-z as one of the greatest rapper today, since his style is very similar to biggie.
You know, i never heard of the guru, can you tell me some of his songs?
for freestylers, its hard for me too since i don't listen to too much freestyles, but when it comes to mixtapes i say papoose is hottest rapper right now
Have you heard of Immortal Technique?
Son Of Logan
09-07-2005, 12:54 PM
Immortal technique is nice. He's hot and cold with me though. Some songs I love, others I don't care.
You've never heard of the Guru from Gangstarr?
And as far as freestylers I gotta give props to Madskillz, Supernatural, and Chino XL.

The two cats I really dig in the underground right now are Tech N9ne and Celph Titled, The Rubix Cuban. Celph is a show stopper. Peep him out on the Demigodz album, The Godz Must Be Crazy. And Tech N9ne is waaaay overdue. He's put out two great albums, Anghellic and Absolute Power. A new one is either out now or about to drop. I saw him in concert this past April. He was incredible, hands down the best show I ever went to.
Here's his website: http://www.therealtechn9ne.com/Pages/Tech9.html

so whats the most creative song you heard?
for me its:
alphabetical slaughter by papoose (he raps through the whole alphabet from A-Z)
rewind by nas (he makes a story but its in reverse like your rewinding a film)
fetus by nas(he raps about him in a fetus)
Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique (no matter how disturbing this song is, it actually has a lesson, about falling into peer pressure and the price for doing anything to be well known)
i got more but these are the only songs i can think of

What cracks me up is someone saying Kanye is one of the greatest hip hop artists of all time, when the man JUST released his 2nd album. Takes more than that to be put in the same league as the proven artists.
Speaking of Kanye, does anyone else think maybe he has something wrong with him or he might have been smokin' out before this video?

I wouldn't say that Kanye is lyrically mediocre and the difference between his "messages" compared to someone like Nas, is that Kanye's music on a lyrical level is a lot more accessible to a wider audience to understand and furthermore appreciate, without necessarilly compromising his work to be classed as comercial pop. I feel that a wider audience that reaches far beyond the hiphop community and fans of rap music find it easier to access and comprehend the themes and underlying messages that kanye has.
I know a lot of peple who are into rap music and they are by no means dumb or stupid but they dont always understand what Nas is saying.

I like female rappers because they have a lot to offer potentially speaking but many of them all sound the same. However, I find it sad that lil'kim has fallen a lot because back in like, '95 or when ever, she was sick, her flow and lyrics were rabbid, she was a mean mcee but now, she anythig these days.
Eve is tight but I think she was better during the period when Ruff Ryders vol.1 dropped but that chick is definately fire.
Foxy, lyrically she's there she needs to put out more. I heard that she's dropping an album soon and I have high hopes for her especially now that she's workin with Jay.
Remmy Ma, Definately tight, I think she's actually the best lyricist out of the whole of terror squad.
Trina, I just wanna tap that huge ass of hers but yeah she's a hot mcee but I wouldn't say she's a fire-spittin' lyricist.
Jha Jha, I think this chick has something, she's diverse and she rolls with dipset, she even wrote the track, what u been drankin on.....so that alone is enough for me to rate her highly.
lady of rage, dunno what happened to her but she was a beast on the track.
Missy elliot, I like her for her style and diversity, switching between rapping and singing, she definately creative on an artistic level but again, she aint no hard-hittin lyricist.
Dabrat, she's heay weight rhyme writer, definately.
There's more but I cant be assed to write about them all, oh and salt n peppa and most definately, without a doubt, Queen Latiah gets an honourable mention.

It's true that Kanye has a wider audience, but I was stating that there are more rappers that are more lyrical and have stronger impact with there messages then Kanye. I don't understand what you mean when you say some people don't understand what Nas is saying.

In terms of being honest, at the moment the only rapper popular enough to challenge 50's crown is Kanye West, whose new album, Late Registration, is the current toast of rapdom. West's background is almost the polar opposite of 50's, and 50 isn't so sure Kanye is the real deal. "I feel like Kanye West is successful because of me. I feel like, after 50 Cent, they were looking for something non-confrontational and they went after - the first thing that came following that was the Kanye West record and his career took off. And, just, a lot of times, he puts together witty phrases and he's a great talent as a producer, but I still don't know who Kanye West is if I listen to his record. By listening to the record, I don't know who he is. I know he was in a car accident, that's what I know." -50Cent on Kayne West

The only connection I see between the two is that they're, you know, black. Is that what he thinks? That all black rap artiss owe whatever degree of sucess they have to him?
Also, Kanye West, I love him to death, but he's political in a listener friendly way. Atmosphere owns the political rap scene, and you've probably never heard of them... tracks about wh celebrities aren't role models, the overblown media coverage, "God Bless America, but you stole the 'B' from 'Bless'" It's crazy. Specifically, their Seven Travels album. It's great.
Other reccomendations:
Audio Two. Milk D and Gizmo. No idea why, but they appeal to me...
Rayzd: About this cat... the only album I've heard him on is "Just Fade Away: Music of Cowboy Bebop and other Sounds for the Otaku." Basically, it's the Japanese songs from Bebop, with Razyd mixing it up in the middle. Also, the album is notable for the Jazz tunes...

Most definately true but as I said before, Kanye's lyrics are more accessible.
I don't understand what you mean when you say some people don't understand what Nas is saying.
It means what it means. Many people are unaware of the underlying messages that Nas tells and even then, the most obvious message throwing tracks he makes, some people still dont understand what he's saying or if they do, they only get a part of what he says and then become lost with everything else. Nas uses a lot of terminolgy and references that most people dont even know about on some of his mildly dep tracks let alone his abundanly profound ones.

Has anyone ever wondered why Mase left rap to become a pastor only to go back to rap?
This is just a rumor of why he went to Atlanta to become a pastor, but it sounds like it makes sense. Its crazy.
Okay well you can believe what you want but if you follow Mase and know his history this will all add up to you. Found this story out today from some friends and it makes all sense now. These are people who do know people affiliated to people in this story so I trust the sources. Anyway heres the breakdown
You ever wonder why Mase just out of nowhere left? He claimed it was because he found God, well that was partially true but not fully. Truth is there was a well known guy in Harlem. Mase was ****ing his girl or wife whatever she is. Word got back around and Mase got caught. So he picked up and took off to Atlanta to basically hide out. He also took two people with him i forget the exact names but if you listen to the interview in which Jim Jones and Cam confronted him on air about it the names pop up. I remembered them as soon as I heard them. Pop Lotty and another dude.(Loon talks about this in his new diss to Mase) Anyway they all took off with Mase to Atlanta. As years passed these two guys felt it was now safe and **** was all clear for them to come back to New York. Mase was warned by the guy though and what happened next is both of these guys were murdered. Maybe just one was and one was stabbed. Either way they got hit because of Mase.
Time passed and the guy who was after Mase was murdered too. This set it up for Mase to easily come back to NY because he felt it was all clear now and he could continue to rap all of a sudden. No one questioned it except the people in Harlem i.e Loon, Diplomats, Cardan, etc because they all knew the true story.
Which is why on radio Cam and jim Jones confronted him if you remember and they kept sayin tell them Mase why you left. Tell them why you picked up and ran. We know your true story etc.
also explains cam'rons line in Welcome To New York City
"you get jam wit them jammers blam with them blammers.. its hot here.. ask mase he ran to atlanta"
If you recall Mase was very quiet too on air about it because this was now out in the open. He also started to pray and said it was for jimmy. Truth is it most likely was for his friends and himself.
Now also it should be noted since Mase thought he was free and had no wrries. He felt he could come back as the original Murda Mase he always was. However, it was Diddy who didnt want Mase associated with that. Since the Shyne case diddy has wanted to stay away from all trouble and he knew Mase was trouble now which is also why you did not see Diddy anywhere with Mase. Dont you think it would of been like the old days when Diddy was side by side with him? Well that didnt happen because Diddy knew the history himself too and he didnt want Murda MAse he wanted the soft Mase with no problems. Because he didnt want trouble again with his company. He has stayed out of all that
That now explains Mase saying on radio Bad Boy wouldnt let him be who he wanted to be etc etc
Basically that was all a act. Now fast forward to today no one hates Mase now but people in Harlem because they all think he is a fake. They know his history. Why is it even close friends of his Loon and Cardan are not even with him now? Instead they dissin him. Supposedly there are more people after him again though due to this and he joined up with G-Unit for the added security presence because basically everyone thinks if the security there we have no chance to get at you. This explains now why Diddy was so free to let him go. Diddy wasnt going to help him at all he rather Mase go to 50 and let 50 handle him while Diddy gets checks cut to him off Mase profits but now it doesnt reflect on Bad Boy what he says or does. He just gets his checks on the side. Its basically a G-Unit problem now not a Bad Boy problem.
So for people who know Mases history this will add up to you. If you been following along. It all made sense to me now when you add it all up. Pretty crazy. Long read but I thought mase fans would want to know and even mase haters.
I know i wondered why Mase just picked up and left, wondered why Jim and Cam hated him so much, wondered why Diddy wasnt helping him promote him and wasnt seen with him other than the VMA's, and also wondered how he could just let MAse go to G-Unit so easily when if you know Diddys history is never that easy i.e 112, Lox, etc.
So yeah for anyone interested there you go. Believe it if ya want. No need to hate

This article should prove BET aint the channel it used to be.
http://www.sohh.com/thewire/read.php?contentID=7519
With Little Brother's The Minstrel Show hitting stores next week, SOHH.com has heard BET is refusing to air the album's first video, "Lovin' It" because it is "too intelligent for the BET audience."
The video begins with a delivery truck dropping boxes labeled "gangsta," "backpackers," "earthy" and "icy" onto a street. The rest of the clip mostly sees LB and Joe Scudda, who is also featured on the song, performing in front of a capacity crowd. The clip also pokes fun at the Hip-Hop subgenres by depicting overly exaggerated backpacker and gangsta characters in the audience. "Lovin' It" also jokingly features typical scenes with Big Pooh sitting next to champagne-sipping models in the venue's VIP section while LB's entourage pop bottles. The video concludes with a car running through the boxes dropped on the street earlier.
The statement of the video being "too intelligent for the BET audiece" was discussed recently on Columbia University's college radio station, 89.9, on the "Squeeze Radio" show. On the show they said the statement was made verbatim by the program director from BET to one of the Atlantic records label reps. This information was obtainmed directly from LB's 9th Wonder.
SOHH.com contacted several officials at BET, including their vice president Stephen Hill, their program director, and publicist, Michael Llewellen who offered this response.
"It's not true, not in that context. BET reserves the right to show or not to show music videos of any type based on the network's own standards and decision-making processes," Llewellyn told SOHH.com.
When questioned further as to whether the words "too intelligent for the BET audience" was used, Llewellen did not respond. Atlantic Records has refused to comment.
The LB incident doesn't mark the first time BET has allegedly banned underground artists from its video rotation. In December 2004, SOHH.com reported that BET snubbed De La Soul's "Shopping Bags" video and The Beatnuts' "Find Us (In the Back of the Club)" clip featuring Akon.
In a meeting with BET heads, De La reportedly said BET told them they "weren't relevant to the BET audience" while The Beatnuts were told that "BET doesn't break new artists." The Beatnuts had previously garnered heavy rotation for videos like "Off The Books" from 1997's Stone Crazy, "Watch Out Now" from 1999's A Musical Massacre and "No Escapin This" off 2001's Take It or Squeeze It.
The network has also been under fire from the black community for cutting its news coverage to make room for more videos in the past few years. Recently, the community has been frustrated with BET for its failure to cover the Hurricane Katrina's crisis.

I just read up on LB i like what there about. Heres a quote from an interview.
"Today, as far as music is concerned, the black face has been replaced with: guns, rims, pimpin’… People feel like that’s the only way they can get on. And rapping, is to come in and talk about shootin’ ni!!as and moving boatloads of coke and **** like that, when that’s not the case."

And when BET was first created it was supposed to focus on black oriented issues and shows, now it's become a dumping ground for old UPN sitcoms and replayed videos. Hell, even the AZN channel features asian themed political issues on occasion.

Tracklists:
1. So Sincere - 9.5/10
2. Never Change - 10/10
3. New York feat. Raekwon and Ghostface - 15/10
4. Can't Stop - 10/10

12. A.W.O.L. - 9/10
**bonus tracks**
Live Wire - 6/10
Magic Hour - 9.5/10
The Truth - 6/10
Summary - I can't stop listening to this album, I hardly skip a song and that also includes the bonus despite that two of them aren't that good. Street-life gives an incredilbe tone for the song and the violins just makes the song just as great. AZ outshines both Ghostface and Raekwon in New York although both made an exceptional verses. Not sure if many people will like Az's chillin but this song just gets me, the beats are hot and Az's flow and rhyme work perfectly with the song. Lastly, The Come Up is just perfect, Premo created a beat so perfect for AZ's style, and AZ just ripping this song is just as incredible as the beats, and the whole voice sampling of Krayzie Bone on "Creeping on the come up" makes this song even better It's just a shame that BET won't play the video for some stupid reasong I don't know If you want to see the video visit az.ivnet.tv . I'm not afraid to say this album is a classic, for it has everything that made AZ one of my all-time favs, and it even improves on his skills as well.

Little Brother: Not Shuckin' & Jivin' Part One
By Matt Barone
“Dope beats, dope rhymes/ What more do y’all want?” --Phonte, on Little Brother’s “Not Enough”
This straightforward question seems rather telltale for Little Brother’s current mood. In some ways, the North Carolina-based trio [MC’s Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh, and producer 9th Wonder] have reluctantly been cast as Hip-Hop’s “saviors.” Amidst an industry abundant in cash-out pressures, the underground darlings have made the transition to mainstream machine Atlantic Records without musical compromise. Their critically acclaimed, yet controversy-attracting, concept album The Minstrel Show, combines the everyman prose of Big Pooh and Phonte, sample-heavy 9th Wonder creations, and sharp humor to lambaste Hip-Hop’s present state-of-affairs.
However, making such a bold statement has been anything but drama-free. From inspiring staff alterations at The Source magazine to receiving airplay denial from BET, these rap lovers from N.C. have endured quite a rollercoaster ride of a record release. ‘Te, Pooh, and 9th aren’t phased, though. Firm believers in putting the music above all else priority-wise, the members of Little Brother are sticking to their genuine script. As AllHipHop.com toted the album with an ultra-rare five star review, we deemed it fit to show off our two-part feature with the other LB Fam…
AllHipHop.com: The past month or so leading up to The Minstrel Show’s release date has been a rollercoaster for the group, between The Source fiasco and the BET video situation. Were you prepared for any of this?
Phonte: I made it up in my mind, as soon as we finished recording the album and decided to name it The Minstrel Show that we’d have to be willing to accept what comes with those decisions. You can’t expect to come out at a time when Hip-Hop is in the state it’s in, name your album The Minstrel Show, and not feel any repercussions. I was ready for whatever. Whether it led to us getting blackballed, or stations not playing us, or n***as beefing, or whatever the f**k it could lead to. This is the stance we’re taking. I know it’s not a popular stance, so I’m willing to live and die by the things that I say. As far as everything that has happened, I’m not surprised by anything. Our situation is somewhat of an anomaly to a lot of people. To just be some unknown n***as who came out of nowhere, under nobody’s wing, and we come out talking about what’s wrong with this industry, it’s like, “What? Who the hell is Little Brother? F**k them!”
Big Pooh: I don’t know what’s in store for us after all this controversy, but hopefully it can result in a lot of people following us. It can hopefully bring some change and balance back to the music.
9th Wonder: My thing about this album is that I really want to let people know that we can say what we want and do what we want on record, as long as the music is hot. Don’t be scared to tell the truth and be yourself. Hip-Hop artists need to be leaders, not followers.
AllHipHop.com: Songs like the fatherhood reflection, “All For You” find you guys really opening up. Why do you think it’s so rare to hear songs like that on a wider scale, rather than just as album cuts?
Big Pooh: Songs like that are easy for people to relate to. A lot of people grew up without their daddies, so I don’t know why it isn’t addressed openly that much.
Phonte: A lot of times, these artists that are out now just aren’t that talented. That’s not to say that Pooh and I are super lyricists, but I think it has to do with A: A lot of these n***as just aren’t that talented, and B: Their scopes are so limited. They just want to rap about A and B. “Sometimes, I’ll rap about B, and then A. I might even get crazy and go B, A, B. C? Whoa, that’s too much! Let’s stick to A and B.”
Big Pooh: Also, you have to be willing to reveal that part of yourself. A lot of people only want you to know what’s popping for them. “I got money! I got cars! I’m good.” Nah motherf**ker, your life really ain’t that good! You got problems just like the next man does, and a lot of people aren’t willing to reveal that side, but Phonte and I are. You can see our good and our bad.
9th Wonder: Hip-Hop used to be an art form to speak for the people who couldn’t normally speak for themselves, from the hood or whatever. It told the troubles of the hood. Just ‘cause you may have made it and now have all this wealth, that doesn’t mean that people in your hood have made it, or will ever make it. A lot of people in your hood are having hard times with life and struggling. They want their story told to. What’s wrong with that?
AllHipHop.com: What makes the album so effective at speaking for the everyday Hip-Hop fan is its humor. One great example of that is the faux R&B song, “Cheatin’.” What was the thought process while making that track?
9th Wonder: It’s crazy, actually, because people think “Cheatin’” is a real serious song. [laughs]
Phonte: [laughs] Pretty much, when I did that song, I was thinking about all of the minstrelsy that appears in R&B, too. Doing that record, I was thinking, “What is the worst R&B song I can write?” It kind of put me in the mind frame of the Masta Ace Slaughtahouse approach, with that, “Murder, murder! Kill, kill!” I remember in interviews, Ace was saying that when he did that record, he played it in Germany and n***as thought that was a real song. It was so far gone that the joke went over peoples’ heads. They didn’t even realize that it was a joke, because that’s how bad the music was at the time. “Cheatin’” is along those same lines. I wanted to write the worst f**king song, but one that, if I didn’t tell people it was a joke, could be a hit. You would be surprised, though. I’m in record companies trying to tell these people, “Your audience isn’t as dumb as y’all think they are.” But, then people take “Cheatin’” serious, and I’m thinking, “Hmmm, maybe people are stupid.” [laughs]
AllHipHop.com: Something that seems really stupid is this whole BET situation with your video. Can you explain what exactly happened?
9th Wonder: BET is doing a great job!
Phonte: [laughs] Pretty much, the whole thing about BET saying the video is “too intelligent” got started on the Internet. To this day, we truly don’t know where that came from. We can’t say that BET did say that. Truthfully, we really don’t know. The fact of the matter is, up until this point, the video hasn’t been played on that station, but we got Atlantic working on that now. Hopefully, BET will come around and start playing the video. If they don’t, we still have the support of FUSE TV, big support from MTV and VH1. We’re just going to keep doing our thing regardless. Whatever happens with BET is whatever.
AllHipHop.com: The video for “Lovin’ It” is basic, just showing what a real club atmosphere looks like, not the typical extravagance that most videos include but Hip-Hop listeners rarely experience. Why do you think such a simple video isn’t getting airplay?
Phonte: Funny thing is, our original idea for that video would have made more sense, as far as not being played for controversial reasons. The original concept was crazy, but budgets were not allowing it. We were going to be playing off The Minstrel Show theme, and it was us on a sitcom. Like a fake Cosby Show set, and we were going to take all the old fonts from that show. We were going to play up the Minstrel Show characters. 9th was going to be a backpack dude named John Jansport.
Big Pooh: I was going to be the iced-out rapper, named Ice Stout. [laughs]
9th Wonder: I was John Jansport, the backpack dude. [laughs] And Joe Scudda was Murder Rob Stab, the gangsta who just kills people before he even raps.
Phonte: I was Brother Earth Seed, the conscious brother. That was our original plan, but once we found out what our budget was, it was like, “Damn. Okay, so the club scene, huh.”
AllHipHop.com: A song like “Slow It Down” definitely has hit-single potential, but with no video exposure, that most likely could never happen. Do you agree?
Phonte: Definitely, you’re right. It’s sad, but that’s the world we live in. Bottom line, it’s all about numbers and delivering labels a demographic.
AllHipHop.com: Right, but why do think that’s the case? Why is it so difficult for good hip-hop to be seen and heard?
Big Pooh: That’s because the kids run this business. They may not be in the offices making moves, but they run things.
9th Wonder: The industry isn’t giving kids what they think they need to hear. They letting kids dictate what the industry plays, and that’s messed up. That’s really backwards.
Phonte: An example of what’s going on is when dinnertime comes at the crib. Your momma brings you out a plate of vegetables, and is like, “It’s time to eat dinner.” “Nah, I don’t want that broccoli. I want a Kit Kat!” “F**k you, n***a! Eat these Goddamn vegetables! You aren’t getting no Kit Kat.” So, you either have one or two choices. Like, I know this is the only meal that I can have. Ain’t no meals coming from nowhere else. Either, I got to eat this healthy food or starve. More than likely, you’ll eat the healthy food, and you’ll learn to love it, but still have a Kit Kat here and there. You need that balance. With a lot of these labels and radio stations, they let kids dictate this market. It’s on some tail wagging the dog stuff. We’re grown-ups. We’re supposed to set the trends. I know teenagers are the biggest market, but I’m sure part of the reason for that is that adults who spend money don’t feel like there is anything out there worth spending money on. If you got 35 year-olds singing to 12 year-olds, then what gives? The average 30 year-old fan of Hip-Hop is like, “I still like Hip-Hop, but give me something that I can at least relate to!” It’s really our society’s fixation on the youth.

WHOA!!!!
and the sad thing is hip hop is a minstrel show but no one notices or cares. And it is also our fault for letting this happen, you see people watching movies and tv show comedies that involve around black stereotypes. White America takes this into their advantage in order for them to gain money. :(

Heres my thoughts on the current state of hip-hop. If a rapper has good lyrics i will give them a chance. But im really getting tired of all this so called "gangsta" music. After you hear one rapper say it the rest all sound the same. This generic (rims, bling, drug dealing) rap is getting old.:down

Part2 of the Little Brother Interview
http://www.allhiphop.com/features/?ID=1182
AllHipHop.com: One of the big issues surrounding The Minstrel Show has been magazine’s album ratings. What are your opinions on the reviews?
9th Wonder: Regardless of what people feel, those magazine ratings definitely help record sales. Credible or not, they help.
Big Pooh: When you go into a bookstore, you may not even buy the magazine. You pick it up, and what’s the first thing you do? You flip to the back, and you find out who got what rating. No matter how you feel about ratings, that’s the first thing you do when you see a new magazine issue has dropped.
9th Wonder: It’s talk for weeks. If you get a 2.5 or a 2, they’ll be talking about you for a long time!
AllHipHop.com: Sounds like you’ve seen the 2.5 rating that Rolling Stone gave The Minstrel Show. Why do you think they reviewed the album so low?
9th Wonder: They just don’t get it!
Phonte: To me, they don’t get it, and I don’t even think they listened to the album. The review read like they didn’t even hear the album, just as their review for The Listening read. So, that magazine just doesn’t seem to get Hip-Hop.
AllHipHop.com: In the magazines that specialize in Hip-Hop, the album has received nothing but critical acclaim. The word “classic” has even been used, but how do you feel about albums being hailed as “classics” before being given time to age? It seems like 2005 has had a series of “classic” albums.
9th Wonder: I think it’s because the music today is so bad, that people really want something that they can latch on to and call a “classic” real quick.
Phonte: This generation never had an Illmatic. So, they’re really looking hard for one.
9th Wonder: A lot of the kids who are calling albums “classics” are the ones on the Internet. That’s because a lot of these kids are born in 1988, 1987. They weren’t around to experience the day that Illmatic came out. They are really trying to re-live that, badly, but they’ll never be able to have that feeling. They were like four years old when that came out. Big Pooh: You can’t really call something a classic until after awhile. After you see if it stands the test of time. If you can listen to it the same way years later that you did when you first bought it, then that’s a classic. Like me personally, I give albums awhile, and then I’ll go back and see if I can still bump it the same. I can do that with Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt. That’s a damn classic.
9th Wonder: A lot of albums that people call “instant classics” just don’t age well. It happens all of the time.
AllHipHop.com: One album that came out to “instant classic” talk was Common’s Be, but a lot of people admitted to hailing it prematurely as time has gone on.
9th Wonder: People are just happy to hear Common rapping again, without all of the extra stuff. I don’t think the “classic” talk for his album has anything to do with the actual music. No offense to any of these artists, but Common, The Roots, Mos Def, Talib Kweli…for these new Hip-Hoppers on the net, those are their heroes. They don’t want to see them go down. They want something to believe in, whether their new music is good or not. On the same page, some of them have a hard time believing that three dudes who used to be on these Internet sites chatting with them are on a major label now. For some of them, it’s a hard pill to swallow.
AllHipHop.com: In what ways do these people address you?
9th Wonder: Everybody got opinions, and some people know how to express their opinions in the proper way. But if you say, “I don’t like Little Brother ‘cause they’re wack,” or if you say, “I don’t like their music because of the following reasons,” don’t do no nitpicking, man! You can tell when somebody is being an a**hole. Somebody had made a post the other day, a friend of mine, saying, “Y’all just mad because it isn’t you. You didn’t have the idea that they had, and you’re just mad about it.” After that, nobody replied. Usually, somebody will copy and paste the quote, and then comment negatively. The following posts were like, “Real talk,” and “True.”
Phonte: In this culture now, there are very few “just fans” left. The age of the Internet has changed that. I remember going to see A Tribe Called Quest in 1996, when Beats, Rhymes, & Life came out. Tribe, Outkast, Busta Rhymes, and The Fugees. Even then, I knew I wanted to MC, but I was still just a fan of the music. I wasn’t going to the concert and saying, “Ahh, Tip f**ked up that verse.” “Lauryn was off for that note.” I just went to enjoy the show, and when I got home, I couldn’t log on to a website and be like, “That show sucked!” I couldn’t type, LaurynHill@thefugees.com [and say,] “Lauryn Hill, you f**king suck! I hate your guts, and that was the worst show I’ve ever seen. P.S. Check my beats at That Producer So-N-So on myspace.com.” [laughs]
AllHipHop.com: So do you think the Internet is indirectly hurting Hip-Hop?
9th Wonder: Really, man, the Internet is a place where everyone can be somebody. Outside of the computer, they’re nobody, so the net is their chance to stand up on that podium and be somebody.
Phonte: It’s definitely not a bad thing, because it helps a lot of music to be heard. But I think, with the Internet now, that fans have lost that knee-jerk reaction to the music, like simply saying, “That’s hot!” People now log on to message boards and write thesis statements about the music. If you like it, you like it. If not, cool. Let it be what it is. It’s just Hip-Hop.

My Top Ten:
1) Jay-Z (Greatest Rapper Alive.)
2) Immortal Technique
3) Atmosphere
4) Sage Francis
5) Eyedea & Abilities
6) Twista
7) Lil Jon
8) Eminem
9) Pastor Troy
10) Big Boi (formerly of Outkast)
And to those who suggest that rap and hip-hop are merely "talking over music"...what a sad, misinformed, and narrow-minded existence you must lead. Hip-hop offers some of the greatest poetry and philosophy that contemporary music has to offer, if you listen to the right hip-hop.
No matter the genre, if you look underground, you find music worth hearing. When people ask me what kind of music I like, I just say "the kind they don't play on the radio."
Props on the Tech signature, btw.
