Eminem's "Not Afraid," the first single from his upcoming album Recovery, enters the Hot 100 at #1. It's the first song to debut in the top spot since Britney Spears' "3" did it in October. It's only the second rap song ever to debut at #1, following "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy & Faith Evans (featuring 112) in 1997. "Not Afraid" is Eminem's third #1 on the Hot 100, following "Lose Yourself," his Oscar-winning smash from 8 Mile, and "Crack A Bottle," his all-star collaboration with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent.
"Not Afraid" sold 379,000 copies in its first week. That's the biggest weekly sales tally so far this year. Only three songs in digital history have sold more copies in their first week. All were 2009 releases: Flo Rida's "Right Round" (636,000), the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" (465,000) and the aforementioned "Crack A Bottle" (418,000).
"Not Afraid" posted the biggest weekly sales total since Ke$ha's "Tik ToK" rang up sales of 394,000 in the week ending Jan. 3. (That was the final week of the 2009 chart year.)
Recovery, Eminem's sixth studio album, is due for release on June 22. Eminem's last album, Relapse, debuted at #1 in May 2009. It posted first-week sales of 608,000 copies. Only one album, Susan Boyle's I Dreamed A Dream, sold more copies in any one week last year.
"Not Afraid" also enters Hot Digital Songs at #1. It's Eminem's fifth #1 on that list, following "Just Lose It" in 2004, "When I'm Gone" in 2005," "Smack That" in 2006 (an Akon smash on which he was featured) and "Crack A Bottle." ("Lose Yourself" was released in September 2002, nine months before the introduction of the Digital Tracks chart. The anthemic hit has sold 2,702,000 copies.)

My friend had 2 tracks from The Game on a mix CD that totally go me on his wagon. Better Days from his upcoming The R.E.D. Album and Red Bandana which I don't think is on any of his official albums. Better Days is one of those "keepin it real" tracks along the lines of Changes or Life Goes On from 2pac. Red Bandana is just raw as hell and badass while talkin **** about 50 cent. Anything else from this guy anyone would recommend?

Terrible. Em is 0/2 with me so far on this new album. But then again so was Relapse and I liked it enough.
I just don't think this career reinvention is really right for him as an artist. It's strange because he's becoming a more conventional rapper with his production and guest features. Usually that's a sign of trying to reach mainstream. But as we all know, he's already there.
I know not many are going to agree with me on this, but Jay is the perfect example of how to evolve and progress with your music. He's not nearly the way he was in his prime, but the guy has a good ear for the type of songs to make. And he's also consciously aware of what's right for him to rap about. I feel like Em is chasing some sort of appeasement threshold that he'll never attain. Relapse was for the hardcore fans who've been listening to him since his Slim Shady days. Recovery is starting to be like Em trying to carve out a new fanbase that didn't really like his usual artistic sensibilities.

I'm on my third listen to Recovery, initial impressions are that this is Em's most complete and focused album since TES. His last two efforts definitely seemed like he wasn't really comfortable as an artist. Encore was some lame attempt at a record while on drugs, and Relapse was proving to the hip-hop heads that he could still spit, but was full of random raps. I've never heard someone trash their work so much as he just did on this entire album ("the last two didn't count" and "f**k my last CD, that s**t is in the trash"). :funny:
Recovery has a theme and an Eminem with a clear head. I think it's safe to say we can say goodbye to the SS/MM rapper, as this is clearly someone who has evolved past that. The production is nothing, NOTHING, like the Eminem of old. He's changed up the entire scale and direction of his songs. If anyone has been tired of Em for the last few years, I'd recommend checking this one out to see if he can recapture their ears again. His distinct style is spread throughout; the angry flow, the constant singing (his most in his career), the crazy multi's. But the introduction of a new production crew delivers a fresh, even melodically-inclined Eminem. This is no doubt his most mainstream friendly, yet most personal record to date.
This is the type of album I'll have to give multiple listens and a lot of time to really gauge where in his catalogue this rates as. But for the first time in a long time I feel like Eminem isn't confused anymore. He's an artist of a new-age now, and a comparison to post-Black Album Jay isn't unfounded. They're past their primes, but they haven't gone on a steep decline and instead are coasting on a comfortable pace that puts most of today's rapper to shame.

As solid as it is, I feel like there are no milestone moments on the album. There's no "Rock Bottom", "Stan", "Till I Collapse", or "Lose Yourself". So here's my problem with Drake:
Is the dude talented? Absolutely. While his wordplay isn't overly complex, and he's not much of a technical wizard, the dude can flow with the best of them. No question.
But the problem I have with this cat is that he really has absolutely nothing to say. And ultimately, it makes Thank Me Later an uneven listening experience.
Hip hop is about a specific individual struggle. An angle. But Drake doesn't have one. His entire record is devoted solely to his sudden fame, to the point that it's almost too self-aware. And it begs the question: what is this dude going to be rapping about two albums from now?
No matter how many sparse, dark backdrops the dude has on his record, the melancholy derived from his purported struggles with women feels artificial. I understand the concept of the trials and tribulations of fame, but is that really a tangible subject for your debut release? Is that really how you're going to announce yourself to the world?
You intentionally go out of your way to achieve success, and then you spend the entirety of your first record complaining about it. How does that make any sense?
At the end of the day, Drake's gonna have a great career because he can flat out ride a beat. But if he wants to attain the level of respect and status of the legends he believes he can hang with (and subsequently whine about being amongst) the dude needs to find a sense of focus outside of his surface level here and now.

Well I'm most definitely going to object to this. :o
Dude has gone on a track with some pretty great rappers, but by no means would I ever group him with them based on his flow. Especially now. His fame has gotten to his head so bad that he doesn't even switch it up now. Listen to his freestyles or his songs, it's exactly the same. And it's not even an ill flow either! Rap a few bars, follow it up with another bar that stretches out the last word:
Everybody in my city know I run the town,

His entire scheme is:

Bar 2 rhyme A
Bar 3 rhyme B
Bar 4 rhyme B

I used to f**k with Drake, but dude has gotten so corny to me now. I would not be surprised at all if he has the 50 syndrome, where he'll be hot s**t now, but simply does not have the talent or unique ability to outlast the burst of popularity.

Eh, but mainstream rappers are pretty wack for the most part, so being slightly above average in this respect is no high compliment. He has a very good ear for what makes a song, that is his biggest talent. As far as raps go though, he's exactly what he's trying to be: a poor man's Kanye/Weezy.
But his flaws as a lyricist are exposed for the world to see on "Light Up". Again, he rides the beat nearly flawlessly, but then you listen to Jay's verse where Jay is KILLING it metaphorically, and it's night and day
There's a difference with those 2 on the track. They both take on the "less is more" approach with their bars and slow delivery, but Jay is actually saying something. It confuses me how someone who cites Nas and Jay as huge influences, can be so blatantly weak with the pen.
Dudes can hate on Hova all they want, and rightfully so when he puts out garbage like The Blueprint 3. But every now and then Jay drops a verse that reminds you why he deserves the legend status.

Unpopular opinion, but I still think Drake kills it. Thank Me Later as an album was too low-key and aside from a few notable moments of introspection, he mostly just rides the beat. I like the album, and I've listened to it quite a few times since it came out, but he needed some more songs like he was doing before, like Ransom for example, where he just goes hard.
There's a lot of rising talent that we'll probably be seeing a lot more of. Maybe not on a Drake level of exposure, but at least on, say, a Cudi level. J.Cole kills it like nobody's business. Chiddy Bang had one of last year's best mixtapes, hands down. Childish Gambino has not released anything that has been less than awesome. And there are some real small people right now that are starting to get attention from the right people, like Kid Kasanova.
It's a really interesting time for hip-hop, I think.

I don't know how they did it, but How I Got Over is a damn masterpiece.
Maybe having the time to really kick back in the studio and let their music breathe helped them, because it's obvious in listening to this record that they've been re-energized by their new late night gig. While I enjoyed Rising Down, I ultimately felt like it was a little too much of a "more of the same" kind of vibe.
This is not to say that The Roots had gone stale, but the mix-n-match melancholy on that record (which was done better on Game Theory) just wasn't sticking with me the way it should have. Plus, the production was just all over the place. But this record is a completely different story.
The production is immaculate. Piano, strings, choirs. It runs the gamut. And ?uest's work here is some of his best to date.
All of the guest spots work. Phonte drops two sick verses, and all of the indie acts help create a tangible sense of mood and help keep the sound completely unpredictable.
But more importantly, Black Thought absolutely tears it up. Tears. It. Up.
"Uh huh, they said he's busy hold the line please
Call me crazy, I thought maybe he could mind read
Who does the blind lead? Show me a sign please
If everything is made in China are we Chinese?
And why do haters separate us like we siamese?
Technology turning the planet into zombies
Everybody all in everybody's dirty laundry
Acid rain, earthquakes, hurricane, tsunamis
Terrorists, crime sprees, assaults and robberies
Cops yelling 'stop freeze', shoot him 'fore he try to leave
Air quality so foul, I gotta try to breathe
Endangered species, and we running out of trees
If I could hold the world in the palm of these
hands, I would probably do away with these anomalies
Everybody checking for the new award nominees
Wars and atrocities, look at all the poverty
Ignoring the prophecies, more beef than broccoli
Corporate monopoly, weak world economy
Stock markets toppling, mad marijuana
OxyContin and Klonopin, everybody out of it"Why is this dude never brought up in the conversation of G.O.A.T.?
Flow? Check. Wordplay? Check. Consistency? Check. Substance? Check.
The Roots, to me, will always represent what hip hop is really all about. This is their best record since Things Fall Apart, and maybe their most complete record to date. There isn't a weak song on here. Hell, there isn't an average song on here. It really doesn't get more pure than this.
Best of album of the year so far. No contest. Moving right along.

I personally don't believe in a single GOAT but Thought is definitely one of the all time greats. And nobody touches him in a live setting...he should add Captain Breath Control to his list of monickers :hehe:
I find it interesting that for the last couple of albums the guest spots in terms of emcees have played such a huge role. There are several songs with just one verse from BT. Guess after being slept on for so long and so many albums he's like "@#$% all that writing".

'Cause Jay goes out of his way to pump himself up as the GOAT, but then puts a track on his album where the guest verse absolutely eats his alive.
It's one thing for a guest verse to outshine the main attraction. It happens. But that first Em verse is seriously one of the sickest ever spit, and it makes Jay look inept.

Ah, so this was some sort of "Jay getting put in his place" thing for you. I doubt Jay(or any of his fans) lost any sleep over it. Any self-proclaimed GOAT is gonna give a B or C-level performance; just so happens Em brought A+ lyrics to that song.
Cats act like Jay's supposed to high-five Eminem for Renegade or something

I thought it was dumb for any fan, let alone Ems to use Renegade as a way to say Em is better than Jay. Renegade is a legendary song where you have two of the best on one track for the first and only time together. That is a reason why I don't think these two will ever do another song together, which I clearly understand. To put in perspective Drake has done 2 songs with Jay, while Wayne has done 2 with Em.

Honestly, "Power" is the type of song he needed to make. Frankly, the response to the Taylor Swift incident was overblown, and I'm glad he went at SNL for their crappy jokes on the situation (especially with taylor lautner kicking the kanye-dummies head off...which is funny, cause he was on stage when it happened and didnt do a damn thing). I previewed some christian rap and it reminded me a Tupac, true renegade rap with a purpose.
I'm not overtly religious either, it's just that I'm hungry for hip hop that is fighting for something important. Underground hip hop used to fill that space but now it's just repetitive and directionless. The chistain rappers rap like their souls are depending on it. Anyone see the making-of teaser for Kanye's new vid? It's NSFW but you can easily find it on YouTube. Pretty amazing stuff that 'Ye has commissioned. He went all artsy on it it. Looks like a really trippy video that once again separates him from the rest of the pack.
Gotta give it to him, you can tell the guy takes his craft seriously.

Yep, I respect the hell out of him. He does nothing but come out with good **** again and again and again and again. Have y'all seen the video of his live performance of Power in Singapore the other night? He freestyled in the middle of it and it basically ended up being a public apology for the Taylor Swift incident. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link it because it has some language in it... just search "Kanye West Singapore" and it's the one with him in the pink suit.
Hopefully it ends up on the album like Pinocchio's Story was on 808s.

Kanye West "Power" official video:
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=106119087
ILL concept, but way too damn short. WTF. Such a grand concept for a catchy anthem and you give us 90 seconds? C'mon...
Eminem ft. Rihanna "Love The Way You Lie" Official Video:
Pretty much as I expected, but well done video nonetheless. I know Dominic must have been thanking his lucky stars to be married to a hottie and still get to tongue-lock Fox on the side. Rihanna looks fine as hell, wish she and Em played the parts but oh well. This'll probably be the biggest mainstream single off of Recovery, so I wonder where Em will go for follow-ups.

I like Cold Wind Blows because it's (along with So Bad) reminiscent of the Slim Shady side of Em's personality. The quirky beats and sarcastic humor are great and fits him very well. But I hapen to prefer the Marshall Mathers side, because his lyrics ring truer and hit harder. I think for the most part that we've seen the last of Slim Shady, and Em is gonna tackle more serious themes in his songs from here on out

There's an interview he did where Em said that he was initially satisfied with Relapse, but that as he sobered up more he realized that he wasn't as on top of his game as he wanted to be. That's why Relapse 2 was scratched in favor of Recovery. If I can find the interview on YouTube I'll post it

I LOVE this track, it's just the right tone Kanye needs for his new album. That feel-good, soulful, positive hip-hop. Not like that's not what he's been doing, but this almost is an ode to the College Dropout days...which I've been dying to hear again for ages.
This is my morning wake-up theme for a good while.

Sorry but I can't take him seriously. He's by far the fakest rapper that exists in mainstream rap today and I don't think I need to explain why. He tried to start beef with 50 and just got himself embarrassed, and now Jeezy's taking shots at him for being so fake. I'll admit he's got nice flow on some tracks as well as some super hot beats recently (love the Aston Martin Music instrumental), but his voice and "trademarks" ("HUHHH"..."ROSAY") are annoying and he relies too heavily on features from other artists (like 95% of Teflon Don).

I've stopped caring about how "real" rappers are after the Jay/Nas "feud". They're mostly a bunch of ex drug dealers and gangbanger homies who say some words over a hopefully sick beat. Ross could work at Chuck E. Cheese's in his spare time but when his verse in "Hello Good Morning" starts, the bass in my car goes up......and it stays there.
