I've never been able to say pop in the context of - "do you want a can of pop" - while keeping a straight face - therefore i don't, i refer to it as the brand name or not at all....i.e. coke, 7-up, sprite etc...
I'd much rather Soda became an everyday word for it here.

No. The Arabic alphabet doesn't have a "P" sound so they used the "B" sound. Pepsi has been in the Mid-east since the 40's/50's someone would have noticed an error in spelling by now if that was the case.

Excuse them for being poor. That's not even the collective Mid-East, what is that a small village? They have factories in Iraq (used to, but coming back), Saudi, Kuwait, UAE, Lebanon, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, etc. that rival the US. You take the worst incident and pass it off as the WHOLE region. :down
That bottling company is probably supplying Pepsi for a small village/town, and not the big metropolises.
Moreover, THIS is not the MID-East, its Bangladesh (1998, I think)...get your facts straight next time, *****.

wikipedia proved me right :)
In Canada, "pop" is the most commonly used term among English speakers to refer to a carbonated soft drink. "Soda" is almost never used. Correspondents have reported that "drink" is common in Newfoundland. In French, a "soft drink" is referred to as "boisson gazeuse", or informally as "liqueur" or "liqueur douce" (but never "boisson douce", the literal translation of "soft drink"). The use of "liqueur" in this fashion is distinctly Canadian French; in France, "liqueur" refers to a very specific set of aperitif and digestive alcoholic drinks
In the United States, "soft drink" commonly refers to cold, non-alcoholic beverages. Carbonated beverages are regionally known as:
"Coke", regardless of the brand or flavour, in most of the South, including New Mexico and Oklahoma. Some older generations of Southerners refer to soft drinks as "dope".
"Pop" in most of the Midwest as far east as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Buffalo, New York, and west up to and including the Pacific Northwest.
"Soda" in the Northeast, the southwest (California, Nevada, and Arizona, the northeastern-settled parts of Florida (near Miami) and parts of the Midwest (around St. Louis and eastern Wisconsin).
"Soda pop" is used by some speakers especially in the mountain west.
"Drink" or "cold drink" are locally common in southern Virginia and the Carolinas, spreading from there as far as Louisiana.
"Tonic" is specifically a Boston, Massachusetts term, particularly among older generations.
See The Great Pop vs. Soda Controversy for maps and geographical trends. Many of its correspondents are violently attached to their particular term and express incredulity at the use of any other.
At many restaurants in the U.S., one finds that the products of only a single major beverage producer, such as The Coca-Cola Company or PepsiCo, are available. While a patron who requests a “coke” may be truly indifferent as to which cola brand he receives, the careful order taker will confirm intent with a question like “Is Pepsi OK?” Similarly, “7 Up” or “Sprite” may indicate whichever clear, carbonated, citrus-flavoured drink happens to be at hand. The generic uses of these brand names does not affect the local usage of the words "pop" or "soda", to mean any carbonated beverage

Faygo
History
Feigenson Brothers Bottling Works, the company that later became known as Faygo Beverages, Inc.(Faygo), was founded in Detroit on November 4, 1907 by Russian immigrants Ben and Perry Feigenson. The original flavors of Faygo were based on cake frosting recipes used by the Feigensons in Russia. Throughout the twentieth century, Faygo steadily increased its production line. Faygo is credited with the spreading of the word "pop" instead of "soda" to mean soft drink in the Midwest. Faygo pop is manufactured in a myriad of flavors. In 1998, Faygo Beverages, Inc. began distributing the Ohana brand of non-carbonated soft drinks. Faygo Beverages, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Beverage Corp., which also own Shasta Beverages, Inc. Many Faygo brand flavors are shared with Shasta brands, for example:

Being from OHIO where we are right (because we are the best), I agree with this users opinion who is also from OHIO. I honestly believe this is the only right opinion on there:
It's pop. It comes from "soda pop". Pop is the noun, soda is an adjective that describes pop. Things are properly referred to by the noun, not the adjective. You say "tissue" for facial tissue, not "facial". If you ask for a facial, in some places you're going to get popped in the nose. "Pop" is the noun. "Soda" is the adjective. "Pop" is the correct term. End of discussion.
Now butter my toast.

I use the generic but not stupid soda, or brand name since I tend to keep Mountain Dew around the house. I've never heard fizzy drink until this day.
If I'm feeling eXtreme and on the edge, I'll use 'frosty carbonated beverage', but never pop.

It's pop. Soda is acceptable also.
Calling all soft drinks "coke" however, is incredibly wrong.
"Hi, I'll have a coke."
"What kind?"
"Root beer"
No. Wrong.

For me, I generally call a soda by it's real name. Sprite, Dr Pepper, and whatnot.
I honestly don't think I have ever heard the word "pop" in my life.

In Milwaukee it's soda. The rest of Wisconsin it's pop. Why, I couldn't tell you.

Here in Dallas most of my friends and I refer to it all as Coke....unless we want Dr. Pepper.....so I guess we have two classifications.
1) Coke - Could be Coke, Sprite, Root Beer, etc.
2) Dr.Pepper - Any type of Dr.Pepper, no ****in Pibb here!

When I was a kid in the 50's and 60's the most popular was Pop but it began to change in the late 60's or early 70's. Suddenly it seems everyone was calling it soda and nobody really seemed to know why it changed. Look at the map, the densely populated areas like California and New England say soda while the pop areas seem to be the least densely populated areas of the country.
