I saw half of it because I was watching Arrested Development during its first half. The creature looked kinda... odd. Lake Bell is even hotter on this show than she was on Boston Legal, though.

I was looking forward to this tonight. It met my expectations. It was pretty good. My Mondays just got more interesting. Surface, then Prison Break.
And yes, Lake Bell is hot.
It got pretty awful reviews. I avoided it.

It seemed like all the good shows were all on at the 8:00 time and nothing was on at the 9:00 time, they should switch some of these shows to 9:00 instead of competing with other shows at the 8:00 time.
But yeah this show did look good from what I saw.

It was OK, but the underwater scenes were the only interesting parts, as all the character setup was strictly run-of-the-mill stuff.
It could go either way at this point, but so far it looks like a ripoff of The Abyss.

I liked the little baby dragon-looking thing in the second episode.
That opening scene where a huge creature responds to the lighthouse foghorn was taken right out of the classic Ray Bradbury short story The Foghorn, upon which the 1950's monster movie The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms was loosely based.

I still like the monsters in Surface, but the human characters really aren't grabbing me. It's basically Close Encounters of the Third Kind meets The Abyss, but with sea-dragons instead of aliens.
Apparently the Sci-Fi Channel is showing a "marathon" of the first few episodes this week so people can get caught up.

I was wondering about that declaration that the creatures are mammals - how did they come to that conclusion? I seem to remember the marine biologist lady saying that the placement of the tail fin determined that it was a mammal, but aside from that they sure look like reptiles to me.
Plus, in the last episode when she opened that book and pointed out the picture of the "prehistoric eel", that was a drawing of a pleisiosaur, which was a reptile, not an eel.

Surface is pretty straightforward and doesn't really have that much of a 'mystery puzzle' element (except for where the creatures come from of course), but so far I'm OK with that.
At this point, Invasion seems like a slow-moving smalltown version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Threshhold seems like a silly military-action-show version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I'm actually finding myself liking Surface the best of these three "alien mystery" series (and no, not just because of all the bikinis!)
The monster CGI in Surface is OK for television, but maybe if the show catches on there will be some more extensive FX scenes.

So I stopped watching Invasion after five episodes and I only watched one episode of Threshold before deciding I didn't like it, so that makes Surface my official winner of the "new alien species" TV shows this season.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Surface is doing pretty good in the ratings, coming in at around 37th for the week. I'm still liking the creature design, but I hope the big critters do something interesting soon instead of leaving all the action to the little baby ones.

The whole was a sort of breeding ground for the new species. They turned on the lights and the species swam toward them and the current knocked them right side up allowing them to inflate the raft attached to the roof. Miles thought Nim would show up to a specific location where power lines entered the water. He thought he saw him in the water, so he ran in there, but instead was bitten by a bunch of new baby species. I also was expecting some sort of movement out of the little guy, my wife actually cried, what a softy. Hope that filled you in?

Well, I just went and looked around the NBC site boards, and apparently the fate of Surface is up in the air right now. The next two eps will end this season, then the show will be up for review to see if it will be renewed or not for 2006-2007. Supposedly there will be some storyline "closure" at the end of this season in case the show gets cancelled, so at least there's consideration being shown to the audience in that respect.
Surface isn't the best show on TV of course, and the characterizations are still kind of weak in comparison with shows like Lost. However, the Jurassic Park-meets-The Abyss storyline is a lot of fun, and I found Surface much more entertaining than the other new "alien species" shows that premiered this season.
As a fan of giant monster stuff, I think I'll send NBC an email just to let them know that I'd like the show to stay on the air, for whatever it's worth. http://www.nbc.com/Surface/

That's because LOST is more character driven. Surface is more about the plot. I like the show but even if they bring it back I kind of wonder where they're going to take it. You can't keep on telling the same monster story season after season. The show was almost set up in a way to only last one season (22 eps or more). I hope it isn't cancelled. Tv is a barren wasteland as it is.

Things do seem to be moving quickly now that the season is ending next week. The revelation that the original Kessler might still be alive at age 110 was not unexpected, but I'm wondering where they're going with the claim that the sea-dragons were bred and released on purpose.
