Christian Bale (Batman Begins) and Steve Zahn (Sahara) are set to star in Werner Herzog's Rescue Dawn, an action-drama based on the German auteur's acclaimed 1977 documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly. Variety says filming is set to begin next month in Thailand.
The independent film tells the real-life story of U.S. fighter pilot Dieter Dengler, a German-American shot down and captured in Laos during the Vietnam War. Dengler, to be played by Bale, organized a death-defying escape for a small band of POWs, including Duane Martin (Zahn).
Rescue Dawn marks the first time Herzog has directed a feature since 2001's Invincible. In addition to "Rescue," he's also on board to helm an untitled soccer feature. His new documentary, Grizzly Man, will be released on August 12th

MGM Picks Up Herzog's Rescue Dawn
Source: MGM,ScreenDaily.com (http://www.screendaily.com/story.asp?storyid=27609)
September 9, 2006
MGM announced today that they've acquired Rescue Dawn (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=12442), the survival story of Dieter Dengler, an American pilot shot down in Viet Cong territory, written and directed by Werner Herzog and starring Christian Bale. They're planning on giving the film a U.S. theatrical run in December.
Based on the true story of an American pilot, Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale) is shot down during a top-secret mission to destroy Viet Cong strongholds in Laos at the beginning of the Vietnam War. Taken hostage, he endures unimaginable conditions at the hands of cruel captors in a makeshift POW camp. Dengler's iron will to survive guides him and fellow prisoners in a meticulously-planned, death-defying escape, only to discover the harsh realities of an unforgiving jungle beyond the camp's walls. Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davies costar in this unforgettable story of one man's determination and unrelenting pursuit of freedom

I'm assuming he did his 'machinist diet' thing again. If ya haven't seen the machinist check it out, that movie was pre-batman begins. You can see how thin he was in that movie, then check him out in batman begins. I'm assuming hes paper thin in this movie(the whole concentration camp thing, little food, water, heat, disease etc..).
Very hard on the body to lose that much weight, then put it back on,take it off etc.....
Mjaa, that thing. Yea, I've seen The Machinist.

A harrowing jungle shoot for "Rescue Dawn"
Director Werner Herzog is no stranger to exotic location shoots.
The man who steered a steamboat across the Peruvian Andes for "Fitzcarraldo" and braved the raging oil fires of Kuwait for "Lessons of Darkness" recently tackled the jungles of Thailand to bring his Vietnam War drama "Rescue Dawn" to the big screen.
The film, which MGM releases July 4, captured a relentless Southeast Asian landscape that posed the ultimate challenge for actors Christian Bale, Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davies.
Herzog chose the merciless topography of northern Thailand to fill in for Laos, where the true story of Dieter Dengler's torture, imprisonment and escape from a POW camp unfolded. Like his character Dieter, Bale ate maggots, swam in snake-infested waters and dodged deadly creatures during the three-month shoot.
"I was like: 'Look at that spider. It could kill you with one bite,"' said Bale, who also spotted random elephants traipsing through Herzog's shoot in the remote northwestern hill country of Thailand, near the Burmese border. "It's an adventure to make a movie with him, and I think that's his point. . . . It's about blood, sweat and tears. It's about jumping in and getting your hands dirty and just collapsing at the end of the day."
With no four-star hotels or catering in the region, the cast and crew endured conditions similar to the film's subjects.
For Davies, who lost 33 pounds during filming, the visionary director led by example. "In film or any (industry), he is probably the most fearless person I've ever met," Davies says.

Holy hell, I appreciate Bale's dedication, but he better stop doing that type of crap before he really gets himself sick.

Review: Rescue Dawn
PLOT: In 1997, eccentric filmmaker Werner Herzog released the documentary LITTLE DIETER NEEDS TO FLY, which told the story of German born Dieter Dengler, who after seeing his town annihilated by American fighter planes during WWII, became obsessed with the idea of becoming a pilot. At 18, he enlisted in the Air Force, and while on an early mission at the beginnings of Vietnam, was shot down in Laos and became a captive in a harsh P.O.W. camp. Now, a decade later, the director is again telling the story - in a more conventional, narrative format - with RESCUE DAWN. (Or: “Werner Herzog’s RAMBO”)
REVIEW: Was there ever a better marriage of director and actor than Werner Herzog and Christian Bale? Herzog is a notoriously demanding and intense director, who often becomes as obsessed as his (real-life and fictional) subjects - usually equally intense men who court peril and risk sanity to achieve a single-minded goal. Christian Bale utterly shocked the movie-going public with his grotesque withering down to a mere 120 pounds to play the frail, disturbed MACHINIST. Immediately after, he bulked up ridiculously to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in BATMAN BEGINS. The man literally gives his body over to make movies. Seems like Herzog’s kind of guy
RESCUE DAWN wastes absolutely no time getting started. After almost-beautiful APOCALYPSE NOW-style footage of a countryside being blown apart by bombs, we meet cocky Dieter Dengler (Bale), who is even more all-American than Tom Cruise in TOP GUN (in fact, you’d never know he lived in Germany for his first 18 years if it wasn’t mentioned). After watching a hokey the-more-you-know type documentary about surviving in the jungle if shot down (he really shouldn’t have laughed so much during it), Dieter is sent on his first mission: a classified bombing raid that he can’t even tell his fiancé about in a letter (this is 1965, so the war hasn’t “officially” broken out yet).
Of course, this being a Hollywood movie, he’s almost immediately shot down and taken captive - oh that’s right, this really happened. If the experience hadn’t been so harrowing, Dieter probably would’ve slapped himself in the forehead and cursed the irony of it all...
After being tortured by his Laotian captors in unique, icky ways (I don’t even think “Jigsaw” would tie someone upside down and strap and ant-hive to their face), Dieter is taken to a Vietcong bigshot who gives him a chance at freedom, provided he signs a document denouncing America’s efforts in the country. Dieter refuses, with the same cheerful bravado, because he loves his country. It “gave him his wings.”
Soon enough, Dieter is shipped off to a remote P.O.W. camp, where he joins five other prisoners; two of them American (Steve Zahn, Jeremy Davies), three Vietnamese (Galen Yuen, Abhijati Jusakul, Cahiyan Chunsuttiwat). Outside of the fact that they’ve been holed up there for at least 2 years and are on the verge of completely cracking up (in the case of Davies, he’s pretty much there already), their pasts before imprisonment is never explored, but then again, neither is Dieter’s. He never quite loses the bright-eyed idealism that he exhibits when we first meet him - his optimism is his only necessary character trait. So it goes that his cellmates current loose-grip on sanity and hope is all we really need to know about them.
The following section of RESCUE DAWN has been explored in countless war camp films - the men bond, joke, fight amongst themselves, ultimately plan escape - but the details here are particularly vivid and uncomfortable. Their feet and hands are brutally constrained at night; their days are spent almost exclusively sitting in one place, staring off aimlessly; their short-tempered guards are equally insane with hunger and frustration; their food rations shrink by the day - so much so that eventually they are forced to eat a big ol’ bowl of grubs and worms (which Bale does with skin-crawling enthusiasm. You get the sense that this was probably Herzog’s favorite scene to film.). It’s a bit slow for those expecting GREAT ESCAPE-style shenanigans, but effectively transporting for those who get caught up in this all-too-real plight. Herzog is a patient, methodical director: even when the P.O.W.’s escape attempt comes, it’s done with restraint and a minimum of fireworks. (which is not to say that it isn’t suspenseful, because it is.)
Bale is fantastic. He once again pulls the MACHINIST routine, although it’s even more impressive here because he doesn’t start out so dangerously thin. It’s like he withers away before our eyes. But it’s HIS eyes that make the performance. We buy Dieter’s almost narcissistic need to free himself, to get back to his ship and probably do the whole thing over again. Wearing an innocently goofy smile throughout the ordeal, Bale’s Dieter Dengler isn’t a scheming misfit like Steve McQueen in GREAT ESCAPE or William Holden in STALAG 17... He’s genuinely in love with his country - a poster boy for the war effort and America - and it’s impossible not to get caught up in his infectious exuberance.
Zahn ditches the stoner-doofus persona he’s well known for and fully immerses himself in the role of Duane, who becomes Dieter’s closest friend. He still manages a few moments of levity (as when he nervously, orgasmically describes the contents of his dream refrigerator: lots of sweets), but Duane is a haunted, frightened individual, who clings to the perpetual hope Dieter lives with, but can’t quite manage on his own. It’s the type of unexpected performance that garners award attention. Davies accomplishes his own astonishing transformation (he makes the skeletal Bale look like Marlon Brando), but unfortunately he’s still channeling Charles Manson (he played him in a t.v. movie some years back), as his muttering, slightly malevolent Gene - while perhaps authentic - is a little too theatrically “crazy.”
But overall, RESCUE DAWN is a gripping film: sincere, sobering, harsh (but not torturous), and amazingly, not at all a downer... It’s a terrible cliche to say a film is about the “triumph of the spirit,” but dammit, this one really is.
My rating 8/10.

I saw this movie today. It turned out to be more of a survival movie than an action flick. I am really into Survival movies like these. Christian Bale and Steve Zahn where amazing. :) Go watch it!

Just saw it today- been waiting a while for it to reach my local theaters- and loved it! The beginning was a little slow, but once it began it really began. Just an overall great film, great acting, great music, PHENOMENAL cinematography.
Some movies are able to take a person to someplace they have never been before and this movie definitely did that. When I got out of the theater, I felt like I was returning to 'civilization'. This type of feeling only occurs with a couple of films and I think one of the things that accomplishes that is through the sets, locations and cinematography. But, here since alot of it was locations rather than sets- I think that main duty may have went to the cinematagrapher. And I will be surprised if this film doesn't at least get a nomination in that field.
10/10

This was the most peaceful time at the theater I've had in while next to Sunshine. Bale was getting on my nerves but Zahn was simply brilliant, my heart sank at his demise, literally gasped. :csad: The man needs an Oscar, that is all I could think of during this film.
The choking up and tears came when they attempt to escape and the rescue.
*TheAlbaFan, you need to see Sunshine, you will come close to weeping. :csad:

I've seen Sunshine.......I didn't really come to tears with it......maybe when they were having to choose who would die in order to have enough oxygen.....but other than that....it seemed they were all resolved to die to do what they did......also, maybe alittle at the end.....:word:
