Eh it really did NOT keep my 100 % interest we all knew how itd obviously end looking at spoilers or not its obvious with this show. But when Lionel woke up as Clark was dying

OMG!!! :wow: I figure it'll probably be Pa Kent that bites it but it could be Chloe.... she doesn't exist in grown-up Superman continuity (does she?). I knew this was going to be an interesting episode when the saving the day was done 30 minutes in. :gasp: This has been a FANTASTIC season so far! I suppose I should shell out the dough to rent the first 3 seasons that I've never seen. ;)

i am really enjoying this season. glad to see they are pulling out all the stops in this one. its about time we start seeing the real "superman" world.
trying to figure who is going to be the one who dies. parents are alive in the comics. father dies in the movie. chloe is a series original who can be sacrificed. the field is actually wide open on where they could go with this.

I gotta admit too, that the episode was great. I almost considered it a blow-off week, because obviously Clark wasn't going to die. Here's what they have to maintain: Lex must stay or go deeper into his diabolical madness. Clark must not be able to lose his powers anymore. Clark must "leap"(fly) in other episodes this season.

This should probably be a seperate thread but....
Who do you think is going to be the "one" that pays the price?
As much as I love Chloe, she expendable. Her character doesn't exist in the comics when Clark is Superman. On the other hand, how could this passion between Clark and Lana ever extinguish unless SHE dies? Jonathon dies in the comics too, so.....
Whoever it is, it will undoubtedly be the season ender.

Things I liked about this eppy:
-Clark's mini-flight to the rocket (its almost like its a practice "leap" before he learns to fly)
-Jor-El able to take Lionel's body over any time he wants too (definately gonna rock this season)
-LOVE how they're carrying on the "Z"-zod symbol, makes you wonder if he'll show up :)
-and did anybody catch the little William's score during the FOS scene??!
Things I didnt like:
-Lana not worried about how Clark came back alive and his cloths were all "burnt and torn" when she saw him at the Kent farm
..thats about it.

Could easily be Zod as well if anyone can open that ship its Braniac & Zod & I dont think Zod knows Braniac is in Smallville. Everything is hinting at Zod showing up eventually

Lionel wasn't Jor-El until the moment that Clark died. I'm sure of that. Before Lionel's eyes cleared he was simply a walking library of Kryptonian knowledge.
I wonder if Jor-El will inhabit Lionel and fight Braniac at some point. Isn't he supposed to know all things kryptonian as well?

From the adorable opening scene.. to Clark falling in slo-mo, bleeding from the mouth :( ... to him flat-lining...to the FOS and Jornel (that's for Hulk;))... to his JUMP/FLIGHT onto a **&$^# missile!!!
Martha's face when she saw him come in the house about choked me up.. then Lana's jump into his arms, and the look on his face. Chloe was.. amazing.
Dayumm.. I'm not sure this ep could have had one more thrill squeezed into it!
This is the show at it's best. It's become like a really great comic book come to life with a great blend of fantasy, fun, and heroics.. all revolving around characters that we've come to know and love. At least I love them. :)

ditto. I actually enjoyed his super-leap more than I would if he had flown. He (Clark) doesn't know how to fly yet, so super-leap would be the next best thing. Their SFX are getting better too.
The last Lana and Clark scene was so well choreographed.. i nearly cried. Slow motion of Lana jumpin to hug Clark. Clark then grasps here as hard as he can (without killin her ofcourse). The wideshot of him standing straight up, holding her nearly 12 inches off the ground was priceless. They then rub noses and she caresses his face. PRICELESS. EXCELLENT DIRECTING.

I think Jor El is IN Lionel & is controlling him. So I am sure most think Jor El is kinda officially Lionel. But when he needs Krypton info he turns on freaky eyed Lionel. It is soooooooo obvious I think with Lionels reply about being that creative to Lex that IS Jor El & like I said before I soooooo HOPE that they show when the Jonathen & Martha Kent find out who is inside Lionel & controlling him lol

Yes it was just incredibly well-done. WB tried and failed for years to do a Death of Superman film but leave it to SV to nail it. From beginning to end it was brilliantly conceived.
I loved the "empty tomb" scene in the hospital as well as Clark's reapparance at the Kent Farm. Incredible. And the scene with Lana was awesome. Rock song worked great.

I too think Lionel was always Jor-El, but wouldn't that mean Jor-El knows that braniac is here on earth and is an imminent danger to clark?Yeah, Jor-El knows about Braniac. That was the whole point about rushing Clark to put the stones together last season. But I also think Jor-El is more concerned about the fate of the PLANET with Brainiac running around. Clark is the only one who can stop him, and Brainiac is going to pull quite a few mind games on Clark. And since Clark isn't the brightest bulb on the marquee sometimes (I can say that 'cause I still LOVE Clark! LOL), it's gonna be an on-the-edge-of-your-seat ride.

Lex: What are you doing?

I'm kind of glad they are easing into showing us Brainiac.. the suspense is building. Truly, these first three shows have been OTT awesome even without using their Marsters trump card. Does anybody else think why people are not questionoing Lex's motives all the time?? Everytime he talks to Lana or chloe, he asks about Clark. Like tonight, it was:
"So you saw aliens? Does Clark Know?" out of nowhere, Lex asks that.
"So, you did your laundry today...does Clark know?"
"A missle almost destroyed Smallville eh? So...what does Clark know?"
And the people that he asks are like "yea he doesnt know anything."
...he might as well where a shirt that says "Does Clark Know?"
The Question

I think Lionel is being possesed by Zod (controlling him remotely from the Phantom Zone). The Jor-El program (he really isn't Jor-El, just the ship's computer which has been imprinted with Jor-El's personality) would kill someoen to help Clark.

This episode was profoundly deep and the highlight of the entire series thus far, even moreso than the obligatory Reeve episodes.Yeah, have to admit, the Christ metaphors were all there. But that wasn't what made it such a fantastic episode (for me.) I think it was the full circle journey that Clark took in one ep. Plus the writing, the acting, the FX... everything just worked beautifully.
I have a question though. Anybody know why they put Lionel in his full suit and Clark in his typical red and blue in the FOS? Was that supposed to be a dream sequence, or did it actually happen? Clark was wearing a light blue shirt when he was shot, and that was removed on the hospital table. Lionel was wearing general hospital clothing - he was in a padded room after all. So what's with the wardrobe change for the FOS scenes? I'm kinda confused about that.

I love how Lex is planting those lovely little seeds of distrust in Lana. He's no dummy and Clark's little bleeding incident didn't fool him a bit. His whole demeanor is different this season. Michael has really gotten that whole evil incarnate thing down. I'm just so geeked out.http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif
Clark jumps really high and he's starting to show that serious inner conflict that so many people think was missing last season. It's going to be such a good time to be a Smallville fan. Lovin' this season and this episode was great. They're 3 out of 3 so far and with Aquaman next week we should go 4 for 4 if Flash was any indication. The scene with Chloe in the barn at the end was great, really lovin' the new dynamic of their relationship. I'm not sure who's gonna be sacrificed, Chloe would be the obvious bet, but she's in the credits, so unless that plot point's dragged out all season I can't see her dying. Also, Clark should get ready for round two with Zod's disciples after that space nuke.

Maybe Masters can add in some classic Spike fight moves & looks as a little homage to his Spike Character

Well Jor-El arranged the situation, so I think we can assume that he included proper wardrobe along with everything else. They were both given what could be considered "typical" outfits for Clark and Lionel. So he had a change of clothing all set aside and waiting for them in the caves? And he physically changed Clark's clothes? http://www.patcostello.com/smileys/confused.gif
I think we're missing something. At least *I'm* missing something. It's not a big deal - I'm just trying to understand WHY. Clark and Lionel could have easily "beamed" to the FOS as they were. There really was no need to change clothes - nor was there time. When Clark died, the missile was 30 seconds from launch. All that dialog at the FOS and Clark beaming (or running?) back to Kansas happened in 30 seconds? Meh. I don't think so. LOL They both obviously changed since both were wearing the same clothes in the next scene, albeit Clark's were quite tattered.
I dunno. There's something missing in the continuity there, but the episode was soooo fantastic, I'm just gonna ignore it.

Oh yeah and about the episode... When Clark got back to SV with his powers and the nuke went off, I jumped up and starting screaming "he's going to catch the ****ing nuke!" At that point my wife looked at me, and I think she regretted ever knowing me, but screw it, cause that was DAMN cool. The best part was I had read all the spoilers and was totally not expecting it, it was like the leap to the truck in "Lucy" only ten times better and not sandwiched into a crap episode
A lot of symbolism in this one too with the whole resurrection, as if we needed any more Christ similarities (Lana is SO Mary Magdalene in this episode). I also got a bit of a Superman the movie vibe when he chucked the nuke out into space and it exploded. Remember that's what freed Zod from the Phantom Zone.. who knows?

We already have spoilers up to episode 10 (excluding 8&9), and I dont see any confrontation between Braniac and Clark...
Don't you guys and gals find it odd that they are taking this new approach by building up tension, but with Braniac & Clark, there seems to be NO tension at all? Does that mean Braniac VS Clark comes in season 6?
They still have 12 more episodes after that. Be patient.

Another really nice song choice.
DISAPPEARING WORLD by David Gray
Slowly the truth is loading
I'm weighted down with love
Snow lying deep and even
Strung out and dreaming of
Night falling on the city
Quite something to behold
Don’t it just look so pretty
This disappearing world
We’re threading hope like fire
Down through the desperate blood
Down through the trailing wire
Into the leafless wood
Night falling on the city
Quite something to behold
Don’t it just look so pretty
This disappearing world
This disappearing world
I'll be sticking right there with it
I'll be by your side
Sailing like a silver bullet
Hit ‘em ‘tween the eyes
Through the smoke and rising water
Cross the great divide
Baby till it all feels right
Night falling on the city
Sparkling red and gold
Don’t it just look so pretty
This disappearing world

2. Did Clark fly?He took off the same way he did in Crusade - the ground deflected and circular waves emanated outwards from Clark's feet. I'd say it was a massive jump - MUCH bigger than the one in Lucy or Insurgence - and it was initiated the way he would if he was taking off for flight. Did he actually fly? Mmm... I'd say no. But judging from that jump, it's not gonna be long. I'd put money on seeing him FLY again, THIS season.

I'm thinking it was a super jump because of the way he grabbed the missile it was like he was trying to hold on. Superman would have flown along side and then grabbed it. Clark had to punch holes in the side to be able to hold on.

As it was, there was no REASON to have a change of clothes. That's my peeve.
I think Triplet noticed something similar in Ageless and was perturbed by it. Fortunately, Hidden was a phenomenal episode, unlike Ageless, so it's easy to forgive the editing gaff, if that's what it was.

As for his flying/not flying...I would say that he did fly. But only to an extent. He didnt do it because he knows how. He did it out of sheer will. He may have wanted to just jump but he flew. I think he just doesnt realize it. I agree with pat that we will most likely see him fly this season. Or learn to at least. Maybe the season ender will be the clincher. This season has just became amazing. I mean they are 3 for 3 so far but that episode was so much more. I never cared for the actual comic storyline of the Death of Superman because it just seemed like they did it to boost sales. But it was great they used it in Smallville, because it totally shows the immortality and the godness of Clark Kent/Superman. The episode was so epic in scope and intimate with characters and the episode just totally blew me away. Keep it up Smallville.:supes:

Oh, and I don't care what anyone says, it was a flight.
How convenient was it that they didn't show him re-entering the atmosphere and landing back on the ground. Like he free-falled several hundred thousand feet and landed softly. Riiiiiiiight.
I agree with the theory that he already knows he can fly but his subconcious won't let him because he so desparately wants to be "normal." Those walls are starting to come down, though. He only brings it out in extremely stressful situations like this episode.
I also doubt it'll be the last flight of the season, as they felt the need to end the titles with the shot from Crusade.
Funny, when he returned to the house and was all teary-eyed I half expected him to tell the folks "I flew again..."

2) Was anyone else caught off guard when Clark was shot? I mean it was just so "raw".
Especially compared to the past 4 seasons when it would go into slo-mo mode whenever someone tried to stab, shoot, etc. him. This time when it happened, I couldn't believe it. A classic case of less is more.

OH MY GAWD! BEST HOUR OF TV EVER!!!!!
Ok, let me add my amazment again. Alright, Smallville has totally hit a fantastic stride, I hope to god they keep it up.
Jor El brought Clark back to life because he never took care of the threat he was warned about. Clark thought it was the 2 Zod disipals, but it wasn't. It's either Brainic or Zod. He lost his powers because he didnt come back at sunset, not because Jor El was done with him. So Clark has to pay the price, or more accurately, Jonathan or Chloe do. Man, Clark got himself into some $#!T.
Jor El said the life force of someone he loves must be sacraficed because his lifeforce was restored. I dont think Jor El realizes how powerful his son actually will be come (or already is). Clark learned he has the power to change destiny, he could actually prevent that death from occuring. (if it isnt Jonathan having a heart attack). So technically, we dont know if someone will actually die.
Anyhow, I was floored by the whole episode, minus the fact that the Sheriff lead the army into the Silo, that was just dumb.
Sage, where are you?!?!? I need your screencaps! Also, you should stop by and chat more often. :)

I think it was both, flight and super-jump. The swirling FX around him was suspiciously reminiscent of Kal-El's flight, but he did seem to jump more or less straight up and without guided direction. Also, like someone else (maybe Kiki?) pointed out.. he had to hold on to that missile once he caught it or he was going to fall.
I do think he has the innate ability to fly.. but I don't think he's mastered it yet.

Jonathen - "Jor El I am gonna kick your a$$"
Martha - "Jonathen what are you doing"

Yeah, have to admit, the Christ metaphors were all there.
All I know is that its the same outfit Clark wore in the premiere when he first discovered the FOS, maybe Jor El recreated them for him? He had to have a Superman outfit on, he couldn't make that leap in his jammies:)

Sweet mother of all that is great about entertainment. That is the best hour of TV I've seen all year. That includes Lost, Veronica Mars, and all the other great dramas.
I've seen the show twice already and enjoyed it as much as I did seeing it the first time.
IF (and I stress if) they can keep this level of writing and entertainment up fans of Smallville will get something far better then a two hour movie.
note** this is not a knock on SR; rather, more of a boast about the show

I dunno. There's something missing in the continuity there, but the episode was soooo fantastic, I'm just gonna ignore it.
mmm... I think the time frames overlapped, there's a movie term for that but I can't for the life of me remember what it is, it increases tension...
Sorta like the enemy ships menacing the Enterprise in Star Trek:TOS that would move further away after the commercial break cliff-hanger, it increases tension.
I don't think Jor-El's talk with Clark happened quite when it appeared to, timeline wise.

Not to be a douche bag here….but:
I know when it cut to commercial after Clark had Lana in his arms you THOUGHT the show was over -- but you see, there was a bunch of stuff that came AFTER that commercial break. Like for instance a nice conversation between Lex and Lana questioning the absurdity of a miracle rebirth.
Maybe next week we can wait till the show actually ends -- seem like a plan?

How convenient was it that they didn't show him re-entering the atmosphere and landing back on the ground. Like he free-falled several hundred thousand feet and landed softly. Riiiiiiiight. But he didn't land softly. He landed with a thud loud enough for Chloe to hear. There's a deep, muffled THUD vibration that Chloe hears in the missile silo when she sees that the rocket had a malfunction. Right after the thud, she realizes it was Clark and says his name.
The thud wouldn't have been the explosion in space since sound does not carry in a vacuum. The only "stretch" of belief would be how unlikely it would be that Clark would land back where he started. The Earth spins pretty fast, so it would be more likely for him to have landed in the Atlantic Ocean somewhere, but I'll cut 'em a break. It was cooler for him to land with a big ass thud outside the silo. LOL

That scene where Chloe puts her hand on Clark's chest to feel where his bullet wound was healed was interesting.
The Sage's "bible study" pics post should include that, since it was like doubting Thomas feeling the scars in Christ's side after he was resurrected.

Jor-El explained it last night. When Lionel tocuhed the stone in "Commencement" when the other two had been united, he became a vessel of kryptonian knowledge that Jor-El could possess if Clark ever needed him.
When Clark flatlined, it activated that in Lionel and he was overtaken by Jor-El's consciuosness, thus the prison break and superspeed. Obviously, he's not "possessed" by Jor-El, as it seems he's in him subconsciously except when he's needed, as Lionel himself had no recollection of any of the events since he was "taken over" by Jor-El

Sorry to those who are turned off by them, but I loved the Christian allegories in this episode. I didn't think an episode could be as good as Rosetta, Onyx and Memoria, but here it is.

Wow, guess this is my first time posting in the Smallville forum. :D
Last night's episode is definitely the best. Tom Welling has improved tremendously as an actor. I was laughing my ass off at the "morning after" scene between Kana, Clark, Johnathan, and Martha. It's funny cause I fear something similar might happen to me. I like that they're getting the development of the mythos back into full swing. I'm definitely able to tell the writers have this and the next few seasons mapped out. The shooting scene was phenomenal. Again, this is where Tom's growing skills as an actor are evident. The super jump and subsequent piggy-back ride kicked ass. I've been waiting for domething like that to happen. I was hoping we'd see Clark fall back to Earth, trying to control it in an early attempt at flight, but I guess not. If the episodes keep getting better and better each week, then I just might be ready to explode by the time spring rolls around.

Here's another possible religious reference: Anyone notice how they switched from the flames of the rocket propelling to Clark laid out in the FOS? I believe that when Jesus died, he descended into Hell to get the keys of life and death before resurrecting. Just a thought.

I just have to make a comment about the music score by Mark Snow played through the Clark dying scenes. It was absolutely brilliant.

My thoughts exactly. I still say it's not Jor-El, it's The Eradicator and that will add up for more interesting drama down the line. The whole thing about taking ppl's bodies and giving them Superman's powers is one of the traits of The Eradicator, just like the surge of energy that was tied around Jonathan's neck in the end of Covenant.

I dont get it though. You're saying that for the past 4 seasons, Clark has been in contact with the Eradicator? And even IN THE FOS, its the eradicator? Where is Jor-El then? In your opinion?

Couple of things first off.
1) Is there any way, any where, to download the, "Am I Dead?" clip? Not the audio, but the visual as well.
2) Concerning the life that must be exchanged for Clarks, isn't it possible (sorry if this has been said) that Jor-El is going to give up his own life force in self-sacrifice for his own son?
Listen to that clip of Jor-el/Lionel talking to Clark again, and listen to the pain in his own voice. Jor-El might have finally done the one thing that will prove he trully is a good guy by sacrificing himself for his own son's life, instead of just taking the life of someone else. Nothing else could better show viewers just how much Jor-El really loves his son than this act.
Jor-El isn't floating about in the movies any more is he? Nope, all Clark has left are his holograms. Listen to Jor-El's last words to Clark as well. "Always know..that I love you." There's real pain in that voice, the same you would expect a parent to express to their child when they know they don't have much longer left with them.
It would probably crush Clark to realize his biological father would end his own existance because of the love for his son. Clark would lose his last real tie to his heritage, and it would be his fault, but seeing the self-sacrifice of his father would be a deeply painful reminder of his responsibility to the world, and would also teach him about the power of self sacrifice as well.
In the end, the only way Clark will know his father will be through the holograms at the FoS, and it was only through his own selfish decision that he is no longer able to speak directly with his father anymore.
Very sad, and extremely powerful stuff, me thinks.

I guess that is feasible but it sort of presupposes that Jor-El is some sentient being and that his actual life force has been what's been talking to Clark, as opposed to his consciousness programmed into the computers in the ship, caves, and FoS.
If you have that, you make the leap to Jor-El being a near immortal as opposed to just a gifted genius scientist. In the old, old comics the Kryptonians were near god-like, so it's possible that Millar and Gough are taking that route...
It's an intersting theoiry, I'll say that, especially since Jor-El has been able to physically affect Clark, Jonathan, and Lionel..

I had always figured it was some advanced AI anyway until this morning when I was thinking about it. While it might not be the most feasible or realistic route to take, I certainly think, story-wise, it would be the most powerful and effective.
I keep watching the clip from the yahoo site, and the expressions and tone that Jor-El/Lionel uses all seem to convey the sadness of a parent that knows their time is coming to an end. Especially that hug before telling Clark to remember that he is loved.
Notice also the subtle surge of light when Jor-El/Lionel hugs Clark, as if passing his life-force energy over to him.
