I thought jump start a thread to discuss the next episode: Hidden.
I'm just Spoiling(bad pun) to talk a little about it.
For starters, it seems it's another meteor freak genocide episode.(the bad)
Clark getting shot and "death" and "Ressurection" seems very interesting and promising though.

Yea kryptonsite is good for that.
It will also be interesting to see how Lana reacts to him supposedly being dead, and how Clark will explain his reapearence to her.

The only problem with this episode, is the WB's constant need to showing the big gun shot.
Also am i the only one getting a tiny bit sick of the constant need for someone to get kidnapped?
triplet
10-07-2005, 02:55 PM
Getting kidnapped is a genre staple... It also makes for some high stakes action.
Save the day or else someone you love could die... What is more high stakes for Clark than that?
Although, I guess it's unusual for Smallville to have it happen two episodes in a row if you count the goons in Mortal holding the Kents and Lana hostage as a kidnapping.

Erica's listed in the official description for the episode.
- CLARK IS SHOT! - Chloe (Allison Mack) is warned by Gabriel (guest star Johnny Lewis) that he is going to set off a missile and obliterate all of Smallville. Still stripped of his super powers, Clark confronts Gabriel and ends up getting shot. In the hospital, Clark flatlines and his fate is left in Jor-El's hands. Meanwhile, Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) believes Lionel (John Glover) has the key to open the spaceship. Kristin Kreuk, Erica Durance, Annette O'Toole and John Schneider also star. Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders wrote the episode directed by Whitney Ransick (#2T6403).
But has anyone seen this new trailer?

So, last episode Clark and Lana try to do it, but are interuped by the twins. This week Clark and Lana try to do it, but Clark's parents come home early. I wonder if this will become an ongoing gag, you know Clark has Lana but now it's now the problem of when to get the girl next door, it's how to find time to make love to her.
Oh, I was just being sarcastic. But, that does kinda seem like it by having two "failed s.ex attempts" two episodes straight in a row.

Does anyone think Jor-El will give Clark that whole "selfish pursuit" speech right before he gets his powers back?Given the fact that Clark had just flatlined, my guess is there won't be any time *before*, but perhaps afterwards. I'm more curious to see Clark's reaction though. Will he be happy to get his powers back knowing that he's been given a second chance, or will he be worried about how his abilities and alien origin will once again separate him from Lana and humanity in general?

Wait... had Lionell become the "eradicator"?
I think I remember that the eradicator was a machine of sorts. The fortress gate was opened at the same time Lionell's eyes were fed what looked like Kryptonian computer data.
Or is this hypothesis taking this theory too far? Might explain those numbers though and Lionell's immediate Kryptonian knowledge.

Lionel becoming a physical embodiment of Jor-El's consciousness would be....crazy. One of his worst enemies, father to who will be his worst enemy, suddenly becoming the physical embodiment of his formerly voice-only biological father? wowza. But a lil redundant....we've already got Jor-El, if only his voice. Still, a cool idea nonetheless.
I'm interested in seeing where this Zod thing gets taken + how Lionel is involved, since apparently, if Lionel's repeated drawing of the Zod symbol in his cell is anything to go by, it wasn't a premiere-only mention.

Clark has a habit of giving people the benefit of the doubt/a second chance/third chance/fourth.....etc. We've seen it before. Tho after the whole punching-each-other-in-the-face game, I don't see them going back to even just-ok terms....things might get a liiiittle smoother, thus warranting Clark a reminder that, hey, Lex is bad. Baaaad.

Oh, that wasn't what I was thinking.
I was thinking that he'd be like a conduit for Jor-El, not become Jor-El.
He'd like give Clark advice from time to time, without him needing to go to the FOS to have benefit of Jor-El's knowledge.
From a writer's viewpoint, that will be highly convenient if some gem of wisdom needs to be dropped without having to resort to a time consuming trip to the FOS, they can just stick Lionel into a scene and communicate it that way.
I think they'll need to be really careful, however....

Okay this is totally random, but kind of a funny story in retrospect:
I had a guy back in college who had compared women's bodies to great art in a dinner conversation and then after the movie he asked me to go with him back to his place to "discuss matters of art"....
Is that a bad line or what?
I asked him to take me home instead.
When we got to my place I told him that I didn't want to see him again, then he started crying like a baby.

BoyscouT, it's the difference between a "natural," bumbling behavior that's situational without being forced - like something you'd see in a *good* rom-com - verses an over-the-top performance that's entertaining, but unrealistic.

EDIT: Nevermind. Its already posted...
Im still perplexed why they even decided to go back to the Kent Farm as opposed to doing it in the Talon, which were they were starting to get intimate during the last episode. Lana said that was the best nights sleep shes gotten, so Im assuming that was the one-time they had sex. It was almost like they wanted to get caught.

Listen to the dialog as they're scrambling to put their clothes on. That scene may have taken place on a different night. Could be a few weeks after the events in Mortal for all we know. Apparently, Lana came back to the farm with Clark, they hung out in his bedroom, laid down, possibly had sex (again), and fell asleep. Lana was giving Clark grief the next morning for promising that they *wouldn't* fall asleep. Watch the scene again. A lot is explained in the dialog.

Its definitely weeks later, the Kent farm house is complete, and I beleive Clark starts college in this ep, and we meet Braniac. And it is rather silly to as you said --possibly have sex when his parents are on the same floor, but I'm not complaining, that scene is damn cute:)

I agree, Melly. Look at the house, it's pretty much completely rebuilt and furnished. In Mortal, they were still hoisting up outside walls.
In Arrival, Lex says to Chloe that it's been "weeks" since he found her in the Yukon. I think a lot of people have a hard time grasping the passage of time between episodes sometimes. Not all of them are back to back time continuations, often there are lapses. These first two eps of this season are good examples of that.
The scene really is damn cute. I keep rewatching it, and when he hits his foot on the bed I can't help but crack up every time at his protest of how much it "hurts." :) I love how Lana teases him about staying for breakfast and he very momentarily panics... Both of them play that scene so well. Bumbling, but endearing, Clark is deadly charming...
I'm not really surprised that they had sex in his parent's house.. For multi-generational reasons I won't go into. LOL..

But the way Lionel speaks, it seems as if the life that will be sacrificed, is ALREADY sacrificed by the time clark is back.
It should be Pete Ross. Hes the only one close to Clark that is expendable right now. Sam Jones III left the show and it doesnt look like he'll ever return. The Smallville TV universe is also very different from the comics and the Sam Jone's Pete Ross is nothing like the original version...meaning they could do anything to him. His death in the Smallville TV Timeline would be of little consequence...
Sam Jones III need not appear either as it could simply be referenced that his character died or was killed offscreen (as was done with Swann, Crosby and many others in the Smallville mythos).
Chloe cant die (despite me wanting her to die) as she has a pivitol role in upcoming episodes. Jonathan Kent cant die either as he'll have a major role in the upcoming eps involving a change of career. Obviously they wont kill Lois, Lana or Martha....so it looks like Pete is the only option.

i don't even know why some people are considering Pete a possibility, he doesn't exist anymore, and he won't be coming back, it's someone that's CLOSE to Clark right now, 1) his parents (1 of them) or 2) Chloe .. maybe Lana too but i doubt that.

If they actually off anybody and it's somebody that Clark "loves," then I really see there only being two options: Chloe or Jonathan. Not that I really want to see either offed permanently before the show's finale, but all the other characters are too important to Clark's future. Somehow, somewhere, Lois has to get the inspiration to become a reporter in her cousin's footsteps. And there are now two, count 'em, TWO, major motion pictures *about* Superman where Jonathan is dead by the time Clark dons the tights, so....

It is possible Jor-el was challenging Clark, but I think Martha's upcoming illness will be the sacrifice and Clark will find some way to save her...Well, this would be preferable to *anybody* dying, of course, but Clark has only been able to prolong Jor-El's edicts, not avoid them completely. Jor-El said somebody is going to die as a trade off of life forces. I dunno guys. To avoid Clark's death, somebody has got to pay the piper, so unless Clark can supplant the situation with some bizarre body switch - or the writers go to the Kryptonite deux ex machina well  , I kinda think *somebody* is gonna buy the big one at some point.

He really as no reason to live in the Smallville TV timeline, they pretty much killed the life out of that character anyways.

oops... double post.
How'd that happen?
And if you didn't know any better, you'd say the same thing about Clark, Lois and Lana. :p
The hint has already been dropped in Forsaken that Pete might eventually work for Lex, and this is when the writers KNEW Forsaken would be Jones' last episode that season, and possibly ever.
Never. Say. Never. :D'
Working for Lex is one thing... marrying Lana? Theres no evidence of this. Chloe was designed as a composite character of Lana and Lois taking elements of each. She pretty much behaved like the Lana Lang from the comics and was treated like such....plus Pete had feelings for her, I wouldnt be surprised if they ended up together....but Lana? Thats just totally out of left field for Smallville.
And then I thought, what if Lara's been hiding out on earth all this time, keeping an eye on him. (Obi-wan-kenobi)
Pretty out there, huh?
I hope not, thats just pushing it. This precrisis Kryptonian immortality and Millar writing Jor-el like hes some kind of omnipotent, omnipowerful God gets on my nerves.

now now, theres a lot to be said for Superman before Byrne went and ruined him...
Byrne sucked I agree, but they havent brought back alot of that precrisis nonsense in the years after he left. I always felt it was really dated, and the way they handle Superman today makes him more 'real' to the modern generation, vulnerable..... and not some all powerful supernatural entity.

Thats just totally out of left field for Smallville.Nuuuuu... you misunderstood me. I meant that if you didn't know anything about the Superman story - if you ONLY knew Smallville - Clark marrying Lois would be WAY out there. It would be MUCH easier to believe he marries Lana at some point in the future, assuming he marries anybody at all. The "evidence" is in EVERY episode. You even have Lois telling Clark (in Commencement) the future is all laid out for him - go to college, minor in law enforcement (LOL!), join a bowling league (well, at least she got the league part right, hee!), marry Lana in a nice church wedding and have a Clark junior.
OBVIOUSLY, that's not gonna happen. WE know what Clark's future is (basically.) But if we didn't know, we'd be blind-sided by the Lois part. I used the analogy in reference to your point about Pete marrying Lana verses Chloe. :)
The only problem being Pete on Smallville had close to zero interaction with Lana and barely any chemistry and interest at all. Its like saying Lex is going to marry the female Sheriff... its pretty out there.
Even in the Lois/Clark stuff, they often throw pretty obvious hints that theyll be in a relationship one day. ex: Lana (refering to Lois/Clark after Lois dissed Clark) "thats how the best relationships start" or something to that effect.

I was only joking about the Lara thing Crisis, I dont think that's what gonna happen.
However, it could be Lex, in terms of his soul rather than his physical being.
triplet
10-12-2005, 04:03 PM
But Crisis, Pete didn't have chemistry with anyone... Not even Chloe.
I wouldn't believe he'd marry her either, so it's not that much further out there to think he might marry Lana.
Serene
10-12-2005, 04:06 PM
I think Pete is LONG gone. At most, maybe we'll get a comment from Lana about how she's going to visit Pete, in the last show after her and Clark have decided to part ways.
triplet
10-12-2005, 04:17 PM
^^--- I like that idea.
But there's no way they'll be bringing Pete back just to off him. Does Clark "love" Pete?
I don't know if he does. I mean, Pete didn't love him enough to stick around despite how hard it'd gotten for him. I don't think that's love.
They were best friends since they were kids. I think he did. Pete did have a little chemistry with Chloe but the major difference is Pete was revealed to HAVE feelings for Chloe... the same cant be said about Lana, they showed no interest in each other, they werent even close friends....more like distant ones through Clark.
And I think Jor-el was talking about real mortal lives...not souls.
And for the last time, they wouldnt have to bring him back... He'd die offscreen; like Dr Swann, Bridgette Crosby, Lex's therapist and many others.
triplet
10-12-2005, 05:04 PM
Having him die off-screen is storytelling suicide. You gotta show stuff for it to be engaging. Can you imagine how dull and uninvolving it would be if Clark had to relate Pete's death but we never see it?
It won't happen.
The only reason Dr. Swann and Crosby died off-screen was because the actors that played them weren't available (you know, chris had died and Margot freaked out)...
Dr. Whatshername died off-screen in Asylum because seeing her death wouldn't have added to the story and it saved them from having to blow up another car...
Sam Jones III isnt available either. But I'd rather they kill Pete....than try to kill Martha and suddenly cure her last minute. Its not suspenseful at all since we know shell survive.

It's not going to happen. Do you think it should happen? Or do you think it will happen?
The reason they killed Swann and Crosby off-screen was because they had to do something with Dr. Swann and Crosby. They were forced into it.
They don't HAVE to do anything with Pete.
I think it's Martha anyway and Clark will somehow save her, but what will he have to give up to do that?
That's the question.

As much as it pains me to say this (because I like all the main characters) I do NOT want any cop-outs on this edict. Clark needs to learn (the hard way) to embrace who he is.
It won't be Jonathan (I'm sure) because his death will teach him a different lesson; a more important lesson (that no matter how god like he is people still die as part of life).
This lesson is entirely different, but just as important. ACCEPT who you are MF -- enough with the “I just want to be normal crap”.

Clark needs to learn (the hard way) to embrace who he is.I'd rather he not be forced into accepting who he is - weird things happen when people are "forced" into such modes of acceptance. Rather, Clark's lesson should simply be that he is who he is, and trying to change that in order to conform to a "normal" life is NOT in his genes, so why hurt himself and others in the futile effort? (There's plenty of subtext in this idea.)

I don't want subservience...I want him to feel like he was hit in the gut with a kryptonite sledgehammer. He wants to be 'normal' so bad -- fine, watch what happens when you're so normal!
Think masochist on this one. The more mental pain he experiences, the happier I'll be. In my mind, he must be punished for acting like a kid. We all learned on our own that we had to grow up some time. We all had to make hard choices as we grew up, and more often then not we learned the hard way that those choices had to be made. It just happens since he's Superman, he gets to learn Super-painful lessons.

"The Life of Somone Close to You Will be Exchanged for Yours."
Jonathan & Martha aren't going to die this season.
remember John Schneider said at the 2005 Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL.
That both him & Annette would be in all the episode in Season 5.
Here his quote.
Q: (To John) What have you heard about the rumors of Jonathan dying?
A Well I have heard those rumors, but I can tell you that it won't happen this season. I was notified three days ago that I would appear in all the episodes for season 5 and (holds up his cell) and Annette just emailed me and told me that her agent has notified her of the same for her character.
So it must be Chloe that Jor-EL is talking about. Which would make sense since Clark in "arrival" ask Jor-EL to leave the FOS to save Chloe's life.
Also Chloe's Death would have a Major impact on Lois & Clark.
For Lois , Chloe's Death would push her full on into Journialism.
For Clark, Clark would have another reason to move forward into his Destiny, also to make Chloe proud and that her death wasn't in vain.

Ack! I was thinking that too. I know it sounds pretty out there, but being that Lex was split during Onyx maybe he is the one chosen, but his two sides are battling and that's why he doesn't just keel over. Eventually one side wins out......oooo. Someone mentioned they doubted Lex because he wasn't in Clark's good graces at the moment, but just because a friend pisses you off doesn't mean you stop having feelings for them.
Hee hee, I just reread that and realize how nuts it sounds, but hey it's just fun to theorize.

We at least know that Chloe is in it too a point. The producers said that her and Lana were going to be dorm mates in college and Chloe is going to have a job at the Daily Planet.
I think Clark is going to save whoever it is. It would show Clark that even with powers, his destiny is not set, and Jor-El doesn't call all the shots that happen in his life. Clark can change and choose his own destiny.
