New articles on Superman Returns are in Lo Magazine and french magazine Cine Live. I'm not sure if the french one has anything new in it. Does anybody know? Below are pics of the covers and samples of the articles.

From CINE LIVE's official site:
http://img469.imageshack.us/img469/3893/10417ag.jpghttp://img469.imageshack.us/img469/9866/11295562760za.jpg
Source: http://www.cine-live.com

From the little I understood, there's nothing new. It's the usual Brian Singer will bring to the big screen the superheroes' most recognized icon Superman. The former director of the X-Men franchise. . . etc.

Here's a translation in case you guys want one;

"Shooting
To superheros, Bryan Singer is a dad. After launching a very remarkable (and intelligent) franchise with the X-Men, the canadian director moves on today to tackle Superman, the icon in blue and red who basically launched the genre of superheros on film.
Question : his costume, does it always stick so tight to his skin? The answer in Ciné Live..."

The rest is about other movies (mostly french).

Not sure what the big deal is...hes pointing out a Superman tatoo on a guys lower back? He is the director of Superman Returns...so a Superman tatoo might be of interest...even if it is on a guy?

Regarding that picture, I don't even think that's his hand. It's all veiny, and his arm is resting on his leg. That's definitely not Singer's hand.

Gossip isn't news.

Though I'm surprised you'd come in here looking for trouble by bringing something like THAT to the table. Really, what did you think that would accomplish?

That article is so ridiculous it defeats its own purpose at the very end.

Dude, you can look through my post count to see if I'm a troll or not. My history speaks for itself.

Wasn't intended to piss anybody off or "looking for trouble." I think it's very valid to this forum to inform that a mainstream publication would pick up on a story like this.

Radar is a pretty big magazine, and coverage of this sort isn't good.
Also, the blogosphere has picked up on it (sites like Defamer, Superficial, Pop Candy). I was just pointing it out to people. Zing's thread (which has an email address for people to contact Radar directly) is worth checking out if for no other reason than to contact the magazine and tell them:

Guess what I meant was that the Hype isn't exactly full of posters who can keep such a topic in an 'adult' manner.....Mainly because lots of younger posters are here. And therefore, the thread (regardless of intentions) is going to skew into a very touchy tangent. It's just not worth it.

10 Questions With Ryan Tudhope

By Tim Wassberg

At 26, Ryan Tudhope has accomplished more than most people twice his age. He began as a pre-vis artist for George Lucas on "Star Wars: Episode I" straight out of high school before joining FX house, The Orphanage, in 1999. With VFX Supervisor and CG Supervisor credits under his belt on films such as "Sin City," "Shark Boy & Lava Girl" and "Hellboy," he has pushed the envelope at every turn. Currently, he is the digital environment supervisor on the highly anticipated movie "Superman Returns."

Empire Magazine (Australian Edition) - March 2006

http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/8492/coverlarge5xs.jpg
Editors Letter

If you’ll indulge me for a second, I’d like to tell you about bath time when I was seven. For reasons I’ve long forgotten, I’d not set foot in the tub and embark on my quest for Planet Hygiene unless I had my rubber superhero dolls with me. Aquaman was particularly handy in this situation, as was The Penguin, but Batman was, you’ll be pleased to know, equally adept at dealing with the soapy environs of the bubble bath. Pride of place, however, was always reserved for the hero with the red cape and the big “S” on his chest. There was just something about a man who could leap tall buildings with a single bound, not to mention change outfits in a phone booth, that captured my imagination more than anyone else. Around that time, Christopher Reeve was bringing the great man to life in the very first Superman movie, a film I’m yet to tire of. You can imagine, then, how happy I am that Superman is not only back, but is on the cover of Empire in a genuine Australian exclusive. Excited doesn’t cover it... Elsewhere in the issue, the Man Of Steel shares space with the Man In Black courtesy of Walk The Line, as well as Sam Mendes, Nic Cage, Cameron Diaz and a host of bloodthirsty gangsters, the latter having promised to behave out of respect for our cover star.

Enjoy.

Discoveries

Play, even without pay, for tobacco

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/9210/disctobacco015hr.jpg
Adachi-Mejia studied PG-13 movies with prominent tobacco brand placements; the Men in Black II alien behind her appears in another scene with a Marlboro carton.

It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Superman . . . zooming past giant billboards plastered with cigarette brands. Not too long ago, tobacco companies paid big bucks to have their products placed prominently in movies—even those aimed at young audiences, like Superman II. Although the practice of paying for tobacco brand appearances (TBAs) in movies is now banned, tobacco brands still appear regularly in movies, according to a recent DMS study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

In 1998, an agreement was signed to settle a lawsuit against tobacco companies by state attorneys general. "One of the purposes of the [agreement] was to limit the amount of advertising that kids were being exposed to," says Anna Adachi-Mejia, Ph.D., principal investigator of the study. One provision of the agreement prohibited tobacco companies from paying to place their products in movies.

Hits: To see what effect that provision has had, Adachi-Mejia and her colleagues examined the top 100 box office hits for the four years before and the four years after the 1998 agreement. They found that the total number of movies with TBAs had indeed decreased—from nearly 21% to under 11%—but that the biggest drop was in R-rated movies. The number of PG-13-rated movies with TBAs had not changed significantly.

"It was surprising and alarming to us that there didn't seem to be a change with the youth-targeted movies," says Adachi-Mejia. The number of R-rated movies with TBAs dropped from about 30% before the agreement to 13% after the agreement. But the slight decrease recorded in the percentage of PG-13 movies with TBAs (from 15% to just under 12%) was not considered statistically significant.

"We know that kids are really affected by what they see," explains Adachi-Mejia. Two of her colleagues—Madeline Dalton, Ph.D., and James Sargent, M.D.—have published studies showing that the more children are exposed to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to begin smoking. Superman will be back on the big screen next summer in Superman Returns. Adachi-Mejia hopes that this time he'll steer clear of tobacco billboards.

Hit do hita ili flop do flopa?

http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/5084/supes2nl.gif
Problem? I te kakav. No, tome usprkos, megalomanijačka se politika Hollywooda nastavlja. Suludo, nije li? Dobrodošli u 2006. godinu...

Superman Returns
• Finally the fifth Superman is here and ready for touchdown.
We chart the superhero’s protracted journey from his last appearance on the big screen in 1987. We also reveal the latest on a 14-disc box set, plus the numerous screen Supermen battle it out to be the reigning superhero.

Feature: Superman Returns

From Superman IV through battles with producers, polar bears and giant spiders to Bryan Singer’s 2006 epic. Follow the story that finally led to the day when Superman Returns…
So, looking back over 100 years of cinema it’s difficult to find a film that has managed to destroy a movie franchise quite as effectively as Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Director Richard Donner’s 1978 original Superman: The Movie, was a huge box office hit and brought the Man of Steel to life with an epic story of such grandeur that it is considered to this day to be the high watermark of superhero movie-making.

Superman II, which followed two years later, was a worthy successor, although slightly marred by the in-fighting that saw Donner replaced by Richard Lester (The Three Musketeers) mid-shoot. While Lester’s finished film was less grand in scope than the original, it had enough out-and-out action to satisfy both die-hard Superman fans and the general movie-going public.

Unfortunately, the rot started to set in with Superman III. Co-starring the late Richard Pryor and directed by Lester, this third instalment seemed like little more than a vehicle for the then hugely popular comedian. With the mythic elements that made the first two films such a success sidelined, Superman III suffered at the box office and was savaged by critics.

Its successor, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, was directed by Sidney J Furie (The Ipcress File) on a budget so limited that the project was doomed to disaster from day one. With effects far inferior to the original film, Milton Keynes doubling up for New York and a risible nuclear disarmament story foisted on the project by lead Christopher Reeve, Superman IV died a lonely death at the box office. Although there was talk of making a Superman V at the time, neither the cast and crew or the cinema-going public really had the stomach for it.

Superman’s movie career was well and truly over for the time being, the Last Son of Krypton going out with a sad whimper rather than a bang. However, like many a failed movie star, he soon began turning up on the small screen. The Superboy TV show, a kind of low-rent precursor to Smallville, followed the adventures of a young Clark Kent’s university years. At least, it did until Warner Bros filed a lawsuit against original Superman film producers Ilya and Alexander Salkind over their involvement in the show, claiming that only they had the right to use the characters.

With Superboy yanked from the schedules after its fourth season, Warner Bros went about creating its own Superman TV show. Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman starred Desperate Housewives’s Teri Hatcher and B-movie star Dean Cain in the title roles and became a worldwide hit, making stars of the two leads. Although it was cancelled after its fourth season, Lois & Clark let Warner Bros know that the Superman property still had wings, so to speak. While the show was at the height of its popularity the studio brought in producer Jon Peters, who had previously worked on Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns to oversee a fifth Superman feature film.

Warner Bros wanted this new movie to be based on The Death of Superman, a best-selling DC Comics story that had recently caused a worldwide media stir. Published in 1993, the epic tale sees Superman go mano a mano with an unstoppable killing machine named Doomsday in the streets of Metropolis. When the two are seemingly killed in the battle, the world mourns, before four individuals emerge claiming to be the new Superman. Fortunately, all is not as it seems and the real Superman returns to deal with the impostors.

Kate Bosworth is #69 in the May issue of FHM Magazine's 100 Sexiest Women. She is joined two other Lois Lane's, Erica Durance (The Cover Girl, #38) and Teri Hatcher (#10).

Erica also was asked about SR & Kate Bosworth...

Kate Bosworth is playing Lois Lane in this summer’s Superman Returns. Do you want to talk some smack?

I’m not going to talk smack. I think I’m fine, and Kate Bosworth doesn’t need my advice on how to play Lois either. She’s been a movie star longer than I’ve been playing Lois on TV. I know people want me to have some secret desire for a cat fight, but I think it’s cool.

What’s your take on the movie?

It has a couple of hundred million dollars invested in it—the TV show doesn’t have nearly that budget—so it’s going to look very different. Plus, we have a completely different story line, not to mention that our show features Superman at a different time in his life. I’ll definitely see the movie when it comes out. Even before Smallville, I loved the comic book movies like Spider-Man, and X-Men, so I’ll go and enjoy Superman Returns like every other fan.

I dont know if it was mentioned, but the April 7th Entertainment Weekly looks at upcoming movies and criticizes that despite the terrible year had by the movies in 2005, they still seem to be generating the same old thing, using Pirates2, Spidey 3, X men 3, and even superman returns. It mentions that this is the fifth time superman has been on the big screen since 1978 (jeez, talk about glass-half-empty) How about this is the first time he's been on the big screen since 1987?

Yes sadly. I stumbled on this shocking fact last year on imdb.I've only seen the first one. The last 3 were apparently direct-to-video.

Beethoven (1992): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103786/
Beethoven's 2nd (1993): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106375/

Beethoven composed 9 symphonies so i guess we can expect 4 more sequels.Yay!:D :p

Wow, thanks for posting that article idaho! Gilbert Adler sounds like a very cool guy. My favorite part was:

"Unlike some executives, Adler loves the enthusiasm of the hardcore fans. "I thrive on passion! I'm very passionate about what I do, and Bryan is, too, that's why we're geting along so well," he says. "Its all about making the film better. These fans are passionate about Superman, and I don't blame them. I love Superman, too. I'm one of those fanboys, so I want to hear what they have to say."

Superman Returns Empire Rules!
Granted unprecedented access to both set and post-production activity personally by director Bryan Singer, Empire has created a fascinating and detailed account of the making of this summer’s most anticipated event movie. While, most blockbusters count on grand special effects and giant marketing campaigns to see them through, Singer’s vision was a highly personal one, a story that says as much about his own life as it does the legendary Man of Steel. As our writer explains, this is a movie very much from the heart, which deliberately references the films of the Christopher Reeve era: “My Superman has to look and feel like he’s stepped out of our collective memory,” says Singer. “And part of it is that, yeah, he looks just a little like Christopher Reeve.” Not that he was scrimping on razzle-dazzle side of things: you’ll believe a man can fly, you’ll believe a man can partake in interplanetary travel.
Over 12 pages, with fantastic pictures and exclusive interviews with Brandon Routh (Clark Kent/Superman), Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane) and Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor), this is the definitive story behind the biggest film of the year.

When it comes to Superman, you need read nothing else.

Gotta say, Total Film's Superman issue is pretty lame as well. There are ten pages (nothing really considering how much coverage was given to movies like Spider-Man 2), and nothing that hasn't been written a million times before. The only proper interview is a short panel with Spacey.

Pedestrian.

The best coverage of Superman Returns has been in Wizard so far.

I liked their cover for SR.

But I would like to say, that TF article is for general public to get their interest about this movie.

And as we know general public know less than we.

LOL, is this a joke? Empire had a great Superman cover earlier in the year, this just screams amateur. Empire also had an incredible 3D Spider-Man 2 cover in 2004 as well.

Yeah, it does look a bit poor. I'm not that picky, but I'm sure they could've made something a tad bit better.

Well, of course it's for the mainstream public. That's the context I read it in. It's still a bad article.

Empire's my favourite magazine, period. But this cover is a let-down. I wanna see how exclusive are the stuff in there (including pics) although I don't think it'll beat what we got form the set visits reports.

I have just read a new Total Film, June month with X3 cover.

There were enough words about SR.

1) About movie
2) A little interview with Harris and Dougherty
3) Comparisons Superman with Jessus
4) About Abrams script

Director Bryan Singer gives us some moments of his time to tell us about his boy wonder…
As Bryan Singer leans back behind his control console, laughing and joking as he shows us some Marlon Brando bloopers from the Richard Donner version of Superman, he looks far too relaxed. The fact that he is making one of the biggest films ever made, the much-anticipated return of the Man of Steel seems to have left him completely unfazed. He may be a bag of nerves, but, if he is, he didn’t show it when he met with Starburst on the set of his biggest-ever challenge.

Superman is a comic book character firmly rooted in the Thirties, but Singer’s style of film-making is sleek and contemporary. The challenges to bring Superman into the new millennium have been reduced by the hero’s previous incarnations. “Well, fortunately others have held the torch over a number of decades, so the collective memory of who Superman is in the audience’s mind is a product of the late Thirties, the Forties, Fifties radio, Fifties television, the Sixties, television re-runs, Seventies movies, shows like Lois and Clark and Smallville. There’s a canon, an archetype that has been contemporized every decade, so an audience’s collective memory of Superman spans the decades, it isn’t just the first appearance in 1938.” Gone are the days of a Stars-and-Stripes waving Superman; this superhero is more cosmopolitan.

“Well, he’s not running around the White House and meeting with the President!” he laughs. “He’s sort of looking at the world’s problems, he steps up high above the Earth and sees problems all over the world and addresses them. He just happens to have been raised in a farm on Kansas.”

Casting this new Superman was always going to be a challenge. “I don’t remember the dates, but I did look at an enormous amount of tapes and early screen tests,” he recalls, “I saw tons of people, we had multiple casting directors all over the world. I saw two tapes of Brandon that he had made previously that I liked. There was something about him that interested me. So the day I was leaving for Australia for my first scout I scheduled a meeting with him. I met Brandon and within 10 minutes of conversation I knew I would cast him as Superman. We talked for two hours; I went straight from the meeting to the airport and went to Sydney knowing that I had my Superman. I didn’t make the decision for two months; I did some Photoshop with his face. We even painted Superman with his face on it so word got out that I might have a favourite, but nobody knew who he was. It wasn’t a known face that they were asked to paint. Then eventually, about two months later I went to the studio and told them I had my one and only choice for the role. There was no other and Alan said OK. I announced it instantly, there was a panel that a bunch of us did for X-Men 2 and rumours had already gotten out for a day or so. I said I would answer two questions about Superman. The first was ‘Is Brandon Routh Superman?’ and I said yes, and then the other question was, ‘Are you going to use the original John Williams music?’ and I said yes.”

Q&A with Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth

How do you deal with the fans? What is their reaction to you?

Kate Bosworth: What's great about the fans for Superman is that they're so excited and loyal and I think it brings a lot of people back to their childhood in a way. I went to Blockbuster the other day to get some films and one of the people that work there said ‘Oh I'm so excited for the movie.' It's really neat to see people coming up to you and saying their excited for the film coming out.

How did you embody Lois Lane ? Did you draw on other Lois Lanes for Experience?

Bosworth: I've seen the Superman films before but I saw them a long time ago when I was a kid. I purposely didn't watch them before I made the film because I didn't want to. I could see myself watching that and sort of being nervous comparing myself to other Lois Lanes and I couldn't deal with the pressure. Brian and I decided we wanted to start it fresh and be conscious of other performances. I watched it after when we finished which was a great experience.

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/8358/screenshot12wx.jpg

What part of the Superman history inspired you to do this film?

Bosworth: Probably the films. To be honest, I really took it from the script. I took a lot of classic Lois Lane characteristics, the spunk, her feistiness, the independence, the drive, but it was all really there in the script. I tried to do it like any other film because if I thought about the hugeness of this film, I think it really would have freaked me out. I sort of approached it like I would have any other character. I read the script. I thought about what she was feeling, what her past experiences may have been, where she's at now.

Growing up or doing research for the movie, did you go back to the Superman comics at all?

Bosworth: I want so badly to say that I read every single comic book, but I was actually more into horses. I have a whole different appreciation for them now after making the film. They're really incredible pieces of art. They're fun, but they are incredibly artistic.

What was it like putting on the Superman costume for the first time?

Brandon Routh: I hadn't worked out for the film yet and I kind of would have liked to have done it alone in my own room.

How many people were there?

Routh: About 10 people watching and taking notes. It was a little bit nerve-wracking.

Did you work out?

Routh: After that, yes. The first two to three months I was working out about 2 ½-3 hours a day. Lifting weights, doing yoga. Eating healthy but well.

Have you had any weird encounters with Superman fans?

Routh: No, the coolest things are when people have tattoos and they want me to take pictures by their shoulder which is kind of interesting.

How was it embodying such a classic character?

Routh: It was very exciting and challenging. I learned a lot from it.

Where did you draw your inspiration?

Routh: It's from my vision of the character and how I see Superman and what I want out of Superman. But, also it's everyone who's come before me. It's George, It's Kirk Allen, It's Christopher Reeve. The cartoons, the image, how society views Superman, how everybody feels about it. All of that wrapped up into my interpretation of it.

Any unique takes that you put on him?

Routh: I don't know. The only thing that I can think is my approach really to Clark is that he's a spy for Superman which is kind of fun. He's just really excited about everything he does. He's not necessarily clumsy for the sake of being clumsy, but he gets really excited.

What can fans expect from this film?

Routh: They can expect a lot of action and a lot of flying. There are many references to the past films and comic story lines and characters in it and other actors that have been in other things which is really neat. They'll get a kick out of that. There are a lot of new things to see that they won't expect which is a really great story, and relationships and some deep emotions, but they won't feel like it's a drama piece. There's a really, really scary Lex Luthor in it from Kevin which is fantastic.

Out of all the Superman films, which character do you think you're closet to?

Routh: I have to say it's probably Chris's performance because he was my Superman and so in my head that's what I see. You know, probably most in the beginning of the film when I thought about Superman flying or reading the script, in my head it was probably actually me envisioning him in a way as I was playing it back in my head.

What are you working on next? Have you signed your next film?

Routh: Not yet. I have a lot of cool opportunities but you know everyone wants to see the film so I'm excited for directors and writers to see the film so they can understand the hype that's out there. The thing I'm looking for is a nice comedy/drama thing.
