View Full Version : Electro's Lighthouse
Electro UK

Doc Ock's got his lair. Venom uk's got his Club House. Symbiotica and fever red have the Appreciation Thread. So why can't poor old Electro UK have an Electro thread? Then it snapped. Make an Electro thread! (Well a 3rd one)
So here it is. The brand new lighthouse. Spider-man's most electrifying villain is here and he wants to be talked about. And why shouldn't he be?
- He's made Spider-man beg for his life
- He's gone toe to toe with most other heros in the Marvel universe
- He's a valuble asset to the bigger villains out there
- He dresses so cool, other villains hang there heads in shame as he walks down the street
- He's more powerfull than most of Spider-man's villains
- He's the classic, guy you love to hate villain
- No matter how much writers try to screw him over, he'll always be so damn cool.
Now who couldn't like this guy? Look him up in the dictionary, he'll come under perfect. So don't disappoint him. Start telling everyone the fact that Electro rules. Do it now, in this very thread.
I present to you, The Lighthouse!

I always liked Electro
First time I read him was in the first Sinister Six story from Stan Lee's day.He wasn't used enough back in those days IMO.In fact he's long overdue a decent story these days (along with several other classic villains).God knows the Spidey comics need him right now.
We were conversing last night on how cool Electro would be in a Spider-Man movie.
A battle in a lightning storm on the Empire state building would be cool as Electro can channel electricity I'm told.So a lightning storm would make him super powerful.Imagine what a visual treat that would be.
And let me add a pic to the festivities:

Thanks Ock
Electro would be a truly great sight on big screen. I can imagine the final battle now, Spider-man's costume, battle ravaged. Electro laughing it up as he let out his bolts at Peter who furiously tries to dodge them. Truly magnificent it would be.
Alas, thanks to the random, out of the blue powers from Dr Doom in the Craptastic Four movie (don't get me wrong, I love the FF but hated that film), that may never happen. Its stupid how a ruined character may infact ruin the chances of seeing another great character on screen.
Well, let's not get into a hissy fit about that right now, I'm sure we'll have time for that later. Now's the time to spread your love for Electro. Here's an example:

Think those 4 words have him summed up right. ;)

I took that into consideration. I feel the thread failed purely down to lack of effort put in by me to make it a decent thread. I know what people have said in the past about if one thread fails, its silly to make a new one on the exact same topic but this time I hope I can make it work.

well, I wasn't around during the old thread so this might be my chance to say what makes Electro so cool.
like some classic characters, Electro has a outragious costume that seems stupid looking and no way would anyone wear it. But thats what makes the charcter so apealing. You can laugh at him for a couple seconds, make fun of his funny mask and then he can shiskabob your butt.
very comicle character but seriously needs a new costume for the millenium and a good story arc to go with it.

He's had plenty of good arcs  As for new costumes, we did see him maskless for a 4 part arc in asm and an attempt at a new costume in the Spider-man: Chapter One series that followed into new comics for a time (it was horrible though).
I wouldn't like to see him in a new costume. I think given the right style, Electro looks perfect. His costume is a defining point and probably the first thing that springs to mind to most non-Electro fans. Some say its goofy and they'll refuse to like Electro for this reason. I think they need to look beyond what may seem to them as a silly costume and see the brilliant character that is Electro.

I always did think his costume was pretty silly, until I saw it drawn by Finch in New Avengers. It made him an instance bad @$$, for me anyway. I have a deeper appreciation for the character now as well.
I like the new avy Electro UK, pretty cool!

Nice pic. I do like Ultimate Electro quite a bit. They've taken him back to what he really used to be, a hired thug (who was among the first to see Spidey's real face). His first arc with Kingpin was excellent. His appearence in Ultimate 6 wasn't as good down to the fact that he never got any action. He saw one panel with him zapping Thor, but this was it.

The Spider-Girl Electro story line went as they planned it.
Electro's daughter goes rogue and can't even touch his father without createing a "Buzz" So he goes to find Spider-man to help defeat his daughter so they enlist the aid of Spider-man's daughter Spider-Girl.
Obviously I ddin't guy it but that's what I recall from Memory.

Argh, the dreaded two panels. I was wandering how long it was gonna take for this to come up. Of course it raises the question, is Electro gay?
Now I've got nothing wrong with gay people *lie detector blows up* but of course, when it comes to the question of my favourite character being gay, I have to defend him.
First of all, I'd like to say that its not certain. We didn't even see what Max was going to say. I know some will say "Hey he's an Electro man, of course he'll defend him." but this is Max Dillon people! He was married for christs sake!
Life changing experience in prison? What? He drop the soap in the showers? this is a Ditko villain. This is an outstanding classic. Not some Spot or Grizzly. You cannot screw with a character like this.
Ugh, now I'm turning it more into a rant. I really don't think that this is making Electro gay. It could have gone anyway. Could have been animals (Which I really don't know why I'm cool with  ). Could have been a freakin Skrull. I'm annoyed how this small panel that will probably be ignored in comics now has changed people's view on Electro, mostly people losing respect for the character.
Electro is a great character, and for some reason, Millar thought it'd be a good idea to have a little fun with him and take the piss outta him. He's changed the way many people view Electro and it makes me very ****ing mad.

:D Excellent scans Electro UK
You shouldn't have to defend Electro. It's obviously out of character, and should be treated like Sins of the Past.
I am surprised that it was brought up so early, I expected that it would be brought up by a newbie or a troll. In my opinion it's as bad as posting the pic of Carnage being torn in half in the Carnage thread, or Doc's death scene in the Lair.
Anyways, I will post some scans that I have featuring Electro.....
Has anyone seen this? They say Scott Caan would be a good choice for Electro if he were to show up in a Spider-Man sequel. They also mention that "Electro wouldn't necessarily make the greatest standalone villain, he'd be great on the silver screen as part of a larger villainous collective (possibly the entire Sinister Six)".....

Yo. I like electro, he's cool, but i wouldn't exactly call myself a fan.
I like a lot about him, but you've heard it all before.
Aside from that....
The mask throws me off. i just can't get over it. Im sorry.
What kind of electricity does he use? all electricity is made of electron currents, but there are different appearances. In ultimate SM it looks kinda like flame, very fluid and flowy. On one of the covers back there, he uses electricity that looks kinda thin and blue ...like spider webs ironically.(it also reminds me of Emp. Palpatine). and then in most cases his electricty looks like the thick yellow bolts. which is the standard, or which do u guys like best?
I cant stand it when he holds a bolt in his fist like Zeus. He conducts electricity, he doesn't make it solid and hold onto it. that's just weird.
Lastly, I would like to cast my vote that electro is not gay, but the writer who made that panel is. That pannel is almost positively pointing toward homosexuality, but that is out of character for electro and should be forgotten.
finally, there is nothing i actually dislike about electro really. all of the things i just mentioned were flaws that should be placed on the writers, not on the character himself.
ELECTRO ROCKS!

It's not that people really WANT Gopher as Electro, we just don't want him as Venom that much worse. I dunno who's brilliant idea it was that this maroon could play a villain and be taken seriously, but whatever.
Spider-Girl "ElectroGirl" episode: total and complete utter craptasticness. I'd post it, but fun isn't allowed these days...
As far as "gay" Electro, consider the source: Mark Millar. All I'll say is that so many homosexually-orientated remarks flow wide from this guy's mouth that I really wonder about his real, true orientation. He's thinking about homosexuality WAY too much for a straight guy, if you know what I mean... you have to wonder about people like that. What are they really telling us? And yeah, I know Millar is married.... but the homosexual jokes keep coming, and I have to keep wondering.
So does this end up tarnishing Electro's reputation? No; it makes us wonder about Millar and why he's thinking about homosexuality 24/7, and finding ways to hint about it in plotlines, that's what it does :D
that Shocker/Electro throwdown is great, I'd like to post that book too but that's not allowed, either. :(

I've often wondered about Millars mind set too. Nothing to do with which 'team' he's playing for but more to do with his sanity after what he did on his MK:SM run. So many things wrong with that arc now looking back at it. Bah!
As for the Electro gay thing, I don't believe it either. Fin Fang Foom on the other hand...now that's another story. ;):p

I still say Kevin Bacon would've been the ultimate Electro.
Doc Ock (I think) suggested him a while ago. He certainly looks the part yes. Alas, I have not seen any of his work. I'll have to rent a movie or something.

Meh...I don't know about pretty boy....I wouldn't consider him to be like Leonardo or Orlando......maybe back in the 80's or early 90's....when he was in his prime but he wouldn't be an awful choice......
Although this actor normally comes off very soft spoken in his roles, I still recall his explosiveness in Fear...which I am referring to Mark Whalberg...

Millar doesn't have to be gay to be homophobic; he just has to be rock-certain, deep down inside, of 2 things: that he himself is not adequately masculine, and that homosexuality is the apothesis of effeminacy. :D
If he's a homophobe, Millar is trying pathetically to make the worst of a bad situation. He thinks he's a little girly-man and that it's apparent to others, but he hopes to salvage some status by making it clear that he isn't the absolute-girliest sort of man (which in his mind is a gay man). That is the motivation for rigidly stereotyping gays and loudly disapproving them.
Now how could Millar's homophobic slander tarnish Electro's reputation?! Such statements only make the charactor, who has never shown any doubt about his own masculinity, look BETTER in comparison to Millar.
As far as I can see it's never masculinity that Electro is insecure about. Maybe it's performance. Yes! That would account for his obsession with competing with an alpha male like Spidey, whose virility is so evident in his copious production of "webbing." :D In conclusion, Electro can't reach his conclusions- the poor guy; how frustrating for him. ;)
Yeh, I feel an essay coming on.

He's fought Cap quite a few times, both in and out of Spidey books, same goes for Daredevil (though he made more appearences in DD's 1st 100 issues than he did in Spidey's 1st 100).
He's also fought the FF and I'm sure he's crossed Iron Man's path a few times.

*Screws in bulb*
There we go.
Now here is an excerpt from Adam-Troy Castro's Sinister Six novels. In this particular passage Spider-Man is describing each member of the Six to a loser criminal named the Disc Jockey in a bid to show him that he's amateur compared to the villains Spider-Man usually faces.
Ok Spidey's description of Electro:
"Okay, now none of these guys are exactly poster children for mental health, but the fourth guy is probably the wackiest of the group. His name is Max Dillon, and he calls himself Electro, the human power battery. Now,I don't have time to go into how,but somewhere along the line he got charged up with enough raw electricity to light up a city.He never runs out of it either.
He can release more lightning than a medium-sized thunder storm and still have enough left to totally incinerate a city block or two.Try to shoot him and bullets explode before they get close.Try to throw him in a river and he'll vaporize thousands of gallons of water without getting wet.He can fly, hurl ball lightning, blow up cars and buildings by pointing at them, give you seizures by disrupting the flow of nerve impulses in your brain, and completely drain the power from any machine you might build to fight him.
Now you'd figure a guy like this,he'd just make millions the honest way by getting a job driving turbines for the power company-but no,he prefers levelling neighbourhoods and laughing at anybody who tries to stop him".
Talk about a force to be reckoned with

Yeah, I have never been much interested in She-Hulk, I am surprised that you own that copy. Do you normally buy She-Hulk or was it the Electro appearance that made you buy the issue? I didn't think you were a She Hulk fan, or was that just the Hulk? ;)
I have not purchased comics regularly since High School, although I go back to my old issues a lot. Occasionally I will purchase a new issue when the storyline peaks my interest. But mostly I try to keep up to date on what's going on. Speaking of which, have you seen the last issue of the Other? Crazy to say the least. I am not liking this change in SM.....:( Hopefully it will be short lived....I just hope they don't make him into Morlun (even for a short time).
I must admit that I am not too familiar with the Ultimate version of Electro. I was merely commenting on his completely different look than the original.

I am a fan of neither She-Hulk nor garden-variety Hulk; I bought that issue off eBay because it had Electro in it. I have most but not all Electro appearances, being a serious student of the character. I don't have the original Electro appearance in DD, and I don't have his appearance in.... damn, that Falcon thing. Other than that I probably have it.
That She-Hulk issue makes a total fool out of Max and I hate it. If I have time I'll scan some stuff out of it Tuesday. He's taken down by S.H. and this new kid sidekick calling himself "Tommy the Gopher." Really ugly, trust me.
As for Ultimate Electro, he's actually quite interesting. His powers are slightly different from 616 Max, for instance he can disincorporate and travel through electrical wiring, etc. which makes him quite hard to stop. In his two appearances so far, he has increased quite a bit in power, and he's getting quite the little 'tude [as is only justified!]. I hope this trend continues. He certainly managed to **** up the Triskelion in a truly royal fashion. Had Nick Fury in a bit of a froth. it's always good to see that.

:) I was hopeing if I looked around for a little bit, I'd find what I was looking for. I really love Electro as a villian, as well as his backstory; to me he seems to be more dangerous for being a team player (as many times as he's been on the Sinister Six, etc), as he can adapt to any situation with a flick of the wrist.
Sadly, I don't have any scans to offer right now (I do have a clean version of Electro-cuted! from my calendar I want to scan, but I have to pull it from my wall), but I'm just happy to find this thread. It's added to my Electro collection quite a bit.

I'd personally love to have seen Electro on the big-screen before Venom; more because I'd rather explore the older rouge's gallery before getting into the symbiotes (as much fun as they are as well :)). If they really wanted to play with CGs, then how about an electrical storm atop Lady Liberty? Or just some sparks between fingers when flexing? At least it looks good in my mind; I've never found anyone I'd think of to play Electro, though, probably because I don't keep up too much on actors. :D

Movie!Doom was jealous, secretly, he really wanted the costume too, just knew it wouldn't fill out right on him. ;) I hope we do get to see him on the big screen soon, I'm just terrified on who the might get to play him. :( I'm kind of picky, I suppose.
So, I finally got down to scanning my 2005 calendar, and since I introduced Carange as Mister April, this makes Max Mr. August? Sure. :)

I'm not sure why, but this is one of my favorite images of Electro and Spidey facing (it stayed August in my room for about two months). Which issues had David Finch drawing Electro? If they're back-issues, I want to try to get my hands on them.

Finch drew Electro in the first two [?] issues of New Avengers, or as we snarky, biased and irreverant types like to call it, Nude Avengers. So called because the Avengers do actually get naked in it. True! Naked and hung upside-down.
In fact, I think I got a few of those bad-boys from N.A. #1 still stashed in my comics folder, let me see what I can do.... [vanishes for a bit]

Now THAT, I call a splash-page. Wow.
Don't go all hog-wild and start thinking that Sparky is returning to form in a way you simply can't miss, though - like I did. I was so happy to see Electro back! This awesome villain and his mind-boggling powers were going to get a long-deserved spot in the limelight; and I was loving every second of it.
In the very next issue, Bendis has him fainting dead away at the mere sight of Luke Cage, that [expletive deleted.] It was a very sad denoument to a great start - and just one more reason good reason to loathe Bendis: he cheated Electro of what should have been his. Respect.

....I..WOW...I am now in need of those issues. *saves* This shall hold me over until then. Except, wow Bendis, that's rather a low blow; I understand that Max is supposed to have some self-confidence issues and such, of course, not to the point like Shocker where it's actually wrote as a weakness, but... :( In those splashes he looked like he was back on the ball, and getting somewhere. *sighs* I'd give Electro a hug, but I'm pretty sure he'd toast me. :O

I doubt he would fry you, Max is hardly impervious to feminine charms. :) He's very human in that respect. In fact, they're what leads to his downfall in this title. I won't spoil that for you since you haven't already read it... and I could accept what happened, but the fainting thing on top of that was just too much.
Seriously not-cool of Bendis to treat him so.
As for movie-version Doom "stealing" Max's powers, bah. Does that even count? Did that movie do that well? I'd bet at least half of the potential audience hasn't even seen F4. I certainly haven't.

Gotta chance then. ;) :D *laughs* Thanks for the hint, it makes me more excited than before to get it. I just can't think of him fainting to anyone just by looking at him, no matter how strong they might be. I think I might just ignore those pages and just drool over the art pages of Max in glory.
I didn't sit in the theaters for F4 for the simple reasons that when I was Jessica Alba as Sue...yeah, I went the other way. I don't like her very well as an actress (I didn't really enjoy her as Nancy in Sin City, but I still went), and being utterly confused by the commercials never showing Mr. Fantastic's powers, I decided I'd just wait.

Ha ha. Yeah, NA's issue 1 was astounding, that amazing slapsh page with the explosion at Rykers... and then Bendis goes and screws up. Luke Cage wouldn't have a chance against him. Horrible shot at comedy there Bendis

I'm not sure why, though I have a very good idea, but they seem to think of Electro as a comical relief failure than a threat, despite the fact that his power, should he find the confidence and as he put it "the creativity" to use it properly, would be devistating. Most of the time it's because of the costume, I think, since it's so flamboyant (one of those, you either love it, or you hate it). I might be biased though. ;)
And now, to go searching through the past for more collection material. Thanks.

Mainly because of the implication of MK:S-M, since it's been claimed that Mark Millar said the person who Max wanted his escort to impersonate was Spider-man. If you were totally being facetious, since at the moment I can't tell, I'm sorry.

I disagree. It was a very short battle.
All he did was throw a few blasts about. There was no huge destruction, no chaos, all he did was wreck a couple of PAINTINGS. Then Spidey used that awful Iron Spidey suit to take him out in the blink of an eye.
I was disappointed. Electro deserved better than that. I thought he might get a whole issue to himself, but bloody Swarm got more attention than Max did.

Yes it was short and yes I would have liked to have seen more of Electro, but I enjoyed the fight that he put up. Very dramatic look to the fight. Maybe you arent concerned by a few paintings being destroyed but a history geek like me was sad to see something irreplaceable get destroyed. The intensity of Max wasnting to kill Peter was enough to make me happy.
What are you talking about??

Time to give this place a little nudge.
Though a loyal minion of His Tentacle-Ness, Otto Octavius, I have to admit that I've recently developed a definite liking for Electro. It started with Castro's Sinister Six novels; Castro does all the characters justice, but he pays special attention to Max.

Interview with Crispin Freeman (Electro) on TSSM. http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=148431
What I think what’s different about this Electro is his power is effecting his mind. He’s almost completely insane, babbling a lot of the time. The high voltage has overpowered his psyche. I find that really interesting. I mean, of course your brain is responsible for channeling a lot of electronic signals through its neural passages. When you’re charged with all that electricity its probably going to effect your brain. That’s certainly what he struggles with. It’s almost like he’s still trying to figure out what’s happening to him. He switches from being angry to paranoid to being vicious to sort of cool. It’s really interesting playing him.
Can I just say that I love what they are doing with Electro in the new cartoon?
