Just wanted to see a full listing (with pics) of all the people Brandon is said to look like at this point.
Besides Christopher Reeve I have heard people say Tom Cruise and that dude from the Gremlins Zach Galligan :p

I was thinking that too. And not just the face, but the build too. Maybe that's the dynamic Singer was going for in his movie too-- the idea of an average looking guy who has amazing superpowers and can kick some serious ass. It's much more fun to watch someone like Keanu can take on a room full of bad guys versus someone built like Arnold or The Rock.

I am baffled at why people want a normal looking Superman. The concept of SUPERman seems to escape them.

Probably because those same people realize that the qualities that make him Super do not include his size.

Depends on what you define as big. My ideal Superman is the Curt Swan Superman, who is nowhere near as big as O'Hearn. Reeve, at his heaviest in Superman IV, looks most like that version of the character.
It's not like Superman has been one set size. Tim Sale's Superman is quite different from Swan's which is different from McGuinness'. Even the original Seigel & Shuster version is quite smaller than other incarnations. Which exactly do you go with?

I go with the fact they are all BIG.
It really doesn't matter how big he is. As long as you can look at him and think "Wow, he is a big guy" it's fine with me. Well, until you start thinking "Jesus christ I bet he can't touch his neck"

I think this term is relative when it comes to comic book heroes. I've seen Superman drawn about the same size as Batman and Green Lantern and I haven't thought any different about him or his powers.

Eh. Size never mattered to me. It's not what I immediately think of when I think of the character. In the JLA, Superman seemed to be of pretty average size compared to everyone else. But again, these are all comic characters with overstylized physiques. I don't really hold them to the same standard I expect of people in reality.

But again, these are all comic characters with overstylized physiques. I don't really hold them to the same standard I expect of people in reality.Well the fact is your view goes against the norm. Especially post-Bale. When most people think of Superman they think big. Back when Superman was being cast, the requirements for a good Superman were:
-Chisled features.
-Height.
-BIG. Or the ability to be big.
It's good you like a small Superman. That way you won't be disappointed on June 30th.

Seems that people also really wanted Jim Caviezel and Henry Cavill, not exactly BIG actors. Sure, they have the ability to BE big but that doesn't mean that they would get the size that you would prefer Superman to be.

What works or doesn't work is not the issue at hand. All you need to do to make a big Superman work is to hire big extras. That's one of the reasons why it works in comic books. Swan drew most of his men the same, just different hair and slightly different features, but most of them were around Superman's size.
But we digress.

The problem is that comic physiques are always exaggerated so I don't really hold it to the same ideal. Swan's is still smaller than how other artists have drawn him and still he looks much bigger than someone who is supposed to be at his height and 225 pounds.

I would think that the best way to emphasize Superman being big was to hire smaller extras. That way he would look much bigger compared to them. That's the problem I find with most comic book artists though. They stylize and exaggerate the sizes of people so that you can't really have a relative idea of how big exactly each person is. So if Swan drew most men the same size as Superman, than how are you supposed to know that he's bigger than the average man?

But you haven't really answered my question. If Swan's Superman is your ideal Superman physique, how can Routh be adequate? Even by Swan's modest standards, Superman is still a large man, 225 lbs easy. Routh is no where near that size.
You defended Routh's physique, because your ideal isn't as large as McGuiness. But Routh falls short of your ideal by quite a margin. I'm just curious why the large discrepancy is acceptable?

But we're not trying to emphasize Superman being big, we're trying to make a large Clark look normal. The problem with your proposal is, muscularity is harder to fake than height, because it's guaged by comparing the size of one's head to their own limbs. Relying on small extras won't make Superman seem bigger, because he won't always be next to one while he performs super-feats, but his head will always be next to his skinny neck, and his skinny arms.
Your claim of artists that "They stylize and exaggerate the sizes of people so that you can't really have a relative idea of how big exactly each person is." is baseless rhetoric. Many Artists have an attention to physiques as well, Flash is slimmer than Superman, and Power Girl is much bigger than Batgirl. Marvel has always strived to reflect powers through physiques, Thing is huge, Spiderman is lean, The Leader has a big head, etc. You need to read more comic books my friend.
So if Swan drew most men the same size as Superman, than how are you supposed to know that he's bigger than the average man?
Don't be obtuse. Heroes and civilians maybe similar heights and physiques, but any artist worth their salt(Swan included) will make the hero slightly more dynamic. You can tell Superman is bigger than the average man because his head is smaller compared to his limbs, that's how you guage muscularity remember?

But you haven't really answered my question. If Swan's Superman is your ideal Superman physique, how can Routh be adequate? Even by Swan's modest standards, Superman is still a large man, 225 lbs easy. Routh is no where near that size.
Because I don't hold comic ideals to reality. When dealing with film, I look more for performance and ability rather than size since that is what creates the character more for me.
You defended Routh's physique, because your ideal isn't as large as McGuiness. But Routh falls short of your ideal by quite a margin. I'm just curious why the large discrepancy is acceptable?
I don't think it is that large of a discrepancy. I see Swan's Superman as fairly average in size, particularly compared to other men in comic books. As I said, if almost every human male in comic books is built like Superman, then I hold that size as average.

But it really depends on the artist, doesn't it? People like Tim Sale and Alex Ross really differentiate character sizes to good effect. But I've seen artists like Aparo, Perez and Jimenez who draw Superman the same size as Green Lantern or even the Flash. Or at the least, their size differences aren't that drastic.
Is that how you gauge muscularity? I suppose, if that was important, I would rely on that as well. But it isn't to me. I look at the character in relation to those around him in the comics and depening on the artist, Superman doesn't always appear very big to me.

Besides Christopher Reeve I have heard people say Tom Cruise and that dude from the Gremlins Zach Galligan :p

First of all, let me say. I think Routh is great cast and looks great as Clark Kent AND Superman. Best option out there.
But... I think Reynaldo Gianechinni would be the perfect actor for Superman role. He has the right look, Superman look, mature look.
Im glad I wasnt the only one to notice the resemble. And Gianechinni improved a LOT as an actor last couple of years.

Yes he was brought up a long time ago on these boards before Routh was cast, but the general consensus with him was that it is too obvious where he comes from so it wouldn't work. With Routh, he looks similar but you can't pin point exactly where he comes from which is perfect for Supes.
