Well ive been commenting on these boards for a little while now, so I guess its time for you guys to do the same to my stuff.
Many of these pictures you guys may have already seen because i don't really get a chance (or the motivation) to things for myself (it also doesn't help that I don't have a home computer). Its only since I joined a few forums this year that i've started doing stuff.
Anyways enough with the words.

This is a rancor sith picture that i never finished- the rancor is the son of the one luke killed in return of the jedi. He trained as a sith to get revenge. I may have been on crack when I came up with the idea.

yeah- i'm in the processes of trying to give up the smudge tool in photoshop... its been my friend for so long, but you can't get any texture out of it..
The zombie spiderman was my first attempt at actually painting- I think it turned out pretty good...

If I'm not mistaken, Image comics uses a lot of this style art. especially in David and Goliath, the big Lion that flies and blows fire controlled by a boy descended from a powerful evil nazzi but who is trying to be a good boy, or something like that.

That has to be the greatest disciption ever of a comic that i have never read :p
Joe Madureira has probably been the biggest influence on my style over the years. I would have his babies if i could.... or at least let him touch me in my special place..

Thanks man :O I find your stuff reminds me of me a few years ago- i'm looking forward to seeing how your evil dead picture comes out.
Me and the smudge tool have been going steady for a while now (well a year anyway- thats how long ive been using a tablet). It does make you get RSI and due to the nature of the tool removes all texture- which is something I wanna started adding more to my pics.
As for the book thing- nah- i'm not that cool :)

I know what you mean, i prefer splash pages and covers to drawing the actual sequentials. Although im half heartedly working on something simply for drawing practice of angles, perspectives and emotions etc. Are we allowed to see some of your character designs? or are they hush-hush? Iv heard companies are pretty tight lipped about where their characters leak out to.
I always avoid colour myself. Iv had a couple of attempts, but im colour blind, so i always screw up hahaha apart from that, im just very bad at it

i thought i'd save my thread with a kinda work in progress of my entry to this months contest.
Heres the scanned inks. I adjusted the brightness and contrast in photoshop to make it the way i wanted it.
http://203.97.5.87/staff/joel/dinoriders_WIP_1.jpg
Then I blocked it in. I put each layer on a seperate layer. At this stage im not really worried about what colours I'm going to end up using- because that can come later. Its just a matter of making sure that everything has a colour.

The lightsabers and stuff like the little lights on the metal frames of the dinoriders were made from a mixture of outer and inner glows. The light on the surfaces of the skin however were just painted on. With that kinda stuff its just a matter of trying to choose the right colours and trying to put them in the right place. :)

create a layer above the line art.
hold alt and hover the mouse over the space between that new layer and the line art ...it should look like two over lapping circles. click.
now when you color on that new layer itll only show up over the lines.

I'll have to try that :)
The way I do it is a little different, when I want to change the colour of the line i just lasso a section and press Ctrl U (Hue/ Saturation)- increase the lightness (so the line isnt black and you can see the colour change), and move the hue, saturation bar around til i get a colour that i want.
I used Ctrl U a lot because instead of finding the exact colour that I want to use straight away, I can paint with any old colour, and change it later.
Quite often you end up with colour combinations that you would never actually think of using.
Forgot to mention - Congrats on winning the Art Contest, homie

Zolland
02-03-2006, 02:37 PM
an electronic drawing board with an electronic pen that mimics your pen movements to the screen. the pen is pressure sensitive so the harder you press the thicker the line becomes.
there are also uber-expensive tablet computers/boards which project the image on the board or let you draw directly on the monitor.

Thats the one of the biggest problems i had, trying to juggle what I thought looked cool with what should actually be there. The reflection was something I thought would look cool, but the idea came after I had already drawn the picture. By then I couldnt be bothered re-drawn the sword (or drawing what the actual reflection would look like :D ).
Im not offically entering the contest this month- but I am going to do an entry. I plan to post my progress as I go- so if anyone is interested in a step by step- watch this space.

So Ive had a few people ask about the way I colour and the like, so I thought id do a simple step by step guide to how I do a picture. Im not sure myself how this picture is going to turn out (it was going to be for this months contest, but i kinda forgot that feb only had 28 days :P).
Ill try and update this a bit every night.
ok so heres
CyberMonkeytrons' Tutorial to colouring and doing some other stuff
Ok lets just start with a disclaimer. This the the way I do things. If you search the internet for a "this is how you colour in photoshop" tutorial- your going to get a million different views on how to do things. This is my way- not the only way. But hopefully some of the techniques and shortcuts I use may help some of you out.
Im gonna start slow but start to use bigger words a bit later.:)
Scanning
Ok to start off with your gonna have to get your picture into the computer. There are a few ways, take a photo of it with a digital camera, folding it up and ramming it into the disc drive, or scanning it in using a.......scanner...umm yeah..
If your scanning line art (like I am) set your scanner to produce a greyscale image from anything between 300 and 600 dpi. Sure you can go higher- feel free if your computer can run it, but as a rule of thumb 300-600 will suit most of your needs.
(note- before you scan, make sure you rub out your pencils, it will save you LOTS of time later having to clean it in photoshop)
Getting Ready to colour
Right. Scanned in? Good. Open it in Photoshop- havent got Photoshop? Turn back now. Im not talking to you. Depending on how well your scanner works you should end up with something like this :
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/4537/scannedem3.jpg
Its a bit...well.... dark.
If you go to Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast and slide the bars around- you can fix that though.
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/1641/brightnesssk4.jpg
Much better.
Now to set up the work so you can start colouring.
RGB? CYMK?
Before you do anything you are going to have to decide what colour system you are going to use. There are two main ones RBG, or CYMK- now they may look the same (both have red, both have green etc), but they represent two completely different ways of displaying colour, so depending on what you plan to have as your end result, it will affect what colour system you should use (in order to get the best result)
If you plan to just have you picture on you computer, or the internet etc, your going to wanna use RBG (Red, Blue Green). RGB is called an 'additive colour system'. Im not going to explain it but you can read about it here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Additive_colour_system)
If you plan to print whatever you have done- its best to choose CYMK (Cyan, Yellow, Magneta and Black....yes K stands for black). CYMK is a 'subtractive colour system. Once again im not going to go into it but if you want to punish yourself here you go (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CYMK).
You can convert them later on- but you can run the risk of cetain colours not coming out as well as you had hoped.
As im just going to be working on the computer- i want to use RGB
Image>Mode>RGB
Seperating the lines
There are a few ways to do this- some faster and easier to do than others, but those ways can often have limitations on what you can do to the piece later on. So I use a Channel selection.
If you look next to the layers tab there should be a tab called Channels. Click on it to open and you should see 4 'options'.
Hold ctrl and click anyone of the R, G or B boxes (B is my favourite)
The lines on you work should now have the 'marching ants' around them.
http://img454.imageshack.us/img454/329/selectinglinessb7.jpg
Now what you have done is just selected everything but your black lines.
Click back on the layers tab and create a new layer (the little folded page icon next to the rubbish bin- or Shift+Ctrl+N).
Name your layers
Double click on the words next to the little thumbnail picture on the new layer (if you didn't Shift+Ctrl+N) and name it 'lines'. Its important to make sure that you keep a handle on your layers my naming them when you create a new one. It helps keeps a tidy working space- plus some other reasons ill go into probably later on.
Now you should still have the white areas selected- hold down Shift+Ctrl+I or Select>Inverse (try and learn the quick keys as soon as you can- it will save you lots of time later on).
Now instead of the white being selected- your lines are- sweet.
While on your new layer called 'lines'-click the paintbucket tool (or press 'G') and click somewhere on the canvas. Now you have filled the selected area with a colour (hopefully a black type colour).
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2908/isolatedlinesbj6.jpg
now our lines are on a seperate layer. as long as we make our new layers under 'lines' then we can happily colour away- safe in the knowledge that our lines are safe.
The last thing im going to do is create a new layer- call it 'background'- choose a random colour and use the paint bucket ti fill in the area.
When ever you colour, its never a good idea to work with a white background- its better to put something in there.
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/1637/linesfinishedph0.jpg
NEXT TIME
I'm gonna start blocking in this sucker with selection tools, paint bucket and layers- lots of layers.

CyberMonkeytrons' Tutorial to colouring and doing some other stuff (part 2)
Blocking (or should I say Bore-ocking)
Ok- now we have gotten our lines ready its time to start the colouring. Before all the prettyness begins however we have to block the sucker in. Blocking means your just going to be putting flat areas of colours down- no shading. no fancy effects. just blocks of flat colours.
This is what i find to be the boringest part of the entire process- and it looks kinda ugly, but it pays off in the long run.
To do this I am going to use the polygonal lasso tool. You will find this as an option in the 'lassos' box on the tool bar. Just click and hold down and a new set of options should appear.
http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/2677/polygonalrf9.jpg
you want the middle one.
Now I end up using a lot of layers- you dont have to, some awesome people just use the one. But I like using a few- but it can end up getting a little confusing. That is why I use 'folders'. 'Folders' are sub areas to keep your layers in and keep your working space a bit more manageable.
(MORE EDUCATED EDIT: after using folders for a little while- I'm not fan anymore- sure it helps keeps things tidy, however a few other time saving tricks I picked up not to long after this, showed me that folders can be more trouble than they are worth. I'll leave this bit of the tut up, but only because someone may find it useful))
Folders are next to the new layers icon
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/1187/layerinfolderag0.jpg
Double click on it- call it whatever- in this case "master Chief" as all the colouring I'm going to do on master chief is going to go in here.
(important note- some important quick keys to remember here are
'F'- changes your view of the canvas- toggles 3 different views- it allows you to move the entire canvas around on the screen.(the second and third views are the same- just with a grey or black border)
'space'- The space bar is awesome because it alllows you to grab the canvas and move it around.
'L'- the lasso tool.
while using 'L' hold 'Shift" to add areas of selection or hold 'alt' to remove areas of selection. 'Backspace' takes away the polygonal tools check points- so if you have put a checkpoint in the wrong place, hit 'backspace' a few times.)
'
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/7265/selectingid4.jpg
I created a new layer and use the polygonal lasso to start going around the area of master chiefs armour.
as long as the lasso is somewhere within the black line you should be fine. Use the space bar to move the canvas around to select the entire area.
Once you have the area selected- choose a colour (at this stage it doesn't matter what) and either use the paintbucket or alt+backspace to fill the area in.
After a while I end up with this.
http://img489.imageshack.us/img489/2310/blocking1ly0.jpg
CyberMonkeytron
03-01-2006, 01:56 AM
After you have filled the area go back to the layers tab and click on the "lock opacity" icon.
http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/5525/lockopacityil8.jpg
Now what this does is prevents you now from painting outside of the area you have just filled.
With lock
http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/7431/lockopacity2ac4.jpg
Without lock
http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/5858/lockopacity3nn2.jpg
Believe me- its handy.
So now i just create a new layer- above the 'armour' one- call it 'brown' or something and I select all the areas of master chief that are going to be that colour
http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/9672/layer2sn0.jpg
and fill it in.
I keep going til finally the picture looks like this.
http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/8747/blockedinzz4.jpg
Each character is in a different folder- each colour is on a different layer.
ok- so it doesnt look very cool yet. But hopefully it will.
At this stage the perfect colours dont matter- just put whatever in there, because each colour is on a different layer its easy to change by using 'Ctrl"+"U" (or Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation)
Ok next time the real fun begins- adding shading (and a background :) )
(it maybe a while though- im away on a little holiday)

in reference to locking...i find it easier to create a new layer above it and then making it a sub layer by alt-clicking the space between the two layers. that way your new color is on its own layer and can be switched at any time...and still only show up on the space you want it to.

zolland- yeah, you can do that to (actually ive never heard that one :p) ... as i said, this is just the way i do things, not the only way.
Photoshop is a strange beast that has many hidden things that you dont often discover til you talk to other people. Thats why an actual tuturial thread is cool- but the ones that ive seen started tend to drop off the first couple of pages pretty fast. Maybe a few people can harass Ex to make one a sticky :)

CyberMonkeytrons' Tutorial to colouring and doing some other stuff (part 3)
Shading
(Disclaimer- Out of all the tuts this one probably has the most of my personal ideas on how I like colouring- many will find that the way I do stuff doesn't suit them- but this how I do it anyway)
Yay- finally I get to start to colour in some stuff. Nows also the time that my crappy line work comes in handy. One of the reasons I dont ink shading is that I suck at it- but the other is that it helps free up some opinions when it comes to colouring. Inking usually requires you to define the direction and amount of your lighting early on. Leaving your lines clean allows me to add as many lights as I want when I colour without conflicting with the inks. Once again, this is more of a personal preference thing.
Ok when your putting lights in your scene it can be a go idea to create a new layer and roughly draw the location and the direction of the lights. It will give you a better idea of how the lights will affect the environment and the characters. It can be a handy reminder so that you have all your highlights and shadows on the right side.
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/3679/lightingxq2.jpg
As you can see I have three main areas that Im going to focus my light coming from. I want a light almost coming from under Master Chief. Maybe a nice warm light to juxtapose with the outside environment that the bad guys are standing in.
The Elite is going to be holding a plasma sword- so a lot of blue/white light will be coming from his hand area. And then I thought some lights coming from the banshee could be cool.
How I start the colouring process is something ive only began doing recently, but I kinda like the results. First I darken the flat colour I am going to be colouring. Pressing Ctrl+U will bring up the Hue/ Saturation box in which you can do this. I make it almost the colour of the shadow I want to have.
It does really matter where you start- but I might aswell begin on Master Chief
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/1333/85240948ru0.jpg
Then I paint a series of lighter colours on top of the dark colour. In essence I am painting the highlights oppose to painting the shadows.
I have begun to use more saturated colours in my art- I feel it gives them a little more warm and life. Often I find people when they colour move in a straight line when choosing colours for their shading. ie
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/6786/colouring1vw5.jpg
Most of the time its heading straight for white for your highlighting can make your picture look washed out. Pure white doesnt really appear much except on very shiny surfaces, so your use of it should be limited. The same with blacks- black dont appear much either, so dont be afraid to put a it of grey or even another colour as your shadows.
I find moving around the colour picker can give you more exotic results.
http://img465.imageshack.us/img465/1824/colouring2om2.jpg
ie
1. heads straight for white
2. Wanders around the colour chart a little
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/9001/colouredballsll5.jpg
2 ends up having more richness to it, while 1 is a little boring. Now you dont need to use this all the time (or at all), but this is probably how I going to do most of the picture.
CyberMonkeytron
03-08-2006, 02:27 AM
Anyway- back to the drawing
When I colour I set my brush to a lower opacity and flow- normally between 20- 30% this allows me to smooth the colouring out. I suggest when you first start colouring, play around with the two settings and find something that you like.
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/6238/77189505ds1.jpg
So I choose a colour that lighter and using the low opacity and flow I paint over areas that the light would be hitting. The more time I pass over an area the lighter it gets. I also use the eyedropper tool (or hold Alt when your using the brush tool) to choose other colours on the canvas- in this case green, to blend the colours better together.
http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/3978/77953795sk8.jpg
After doing the green- I move on to the brown area (on the layer I called brown earlier)
Once I do one layer I start on another, zooming in and out of the canvas to make sure that the light is going the right way and that the colours are looking alright together. If not- just Ctrl+U and change the hue.
I though I might aswell add some "fancy" effects while I was here so I put in some lights on master chief. The easiest/cheapest way to make it look cool is
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/9505/lightingeffectsyh9.jpg1- make a layer above the lines layer.
2- lasso and fill your shape on that layer. Double click on that layers thumbnail image on the layers tab.
3- a new effects box should pop up. Choose an outer glow (play around with the sliders) and a inner glow (again- choose whatever you think look cool). Then click Ok.
Hey presto- simple lights.
And Master Chief is nearly finished :p
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/5921/67257414sc2.jpg
Basically thats most of the stuff you will need really to do stuff like me. I dont think I have much more to share- not that I really had much to begin with :O
The next few updates will just be me using the techiques I have shown you to finish up...so yeah... class dismissed.
Now I have to go home and watch Lost.

its all done with pixey dust and love.
yeah, I do change my line colour- nice spotting :) Its a small thing- but I really like the effect.
Its pretty simple- but sometime its really fiddly to do.
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/3585/apple1vq5.jpg
-use the lasso tool on your lines to select the area you want as a certain colour- in this case the red of the apple.
-Press Ctrl+U or Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/3742/apple2ha3.jpg
-Tick the box that says colourize and move the sliders around to what ever you feel is good.
As for the robots- each robot was on a seperate layer, so I just tweaked the layers opacity of the robots in the back to try and make it look like there was some depth.

i forgot... i had one more question. Do you never use the selective brush method of going from Multiply brushes or layers, to overlay? and if so... when is the best. and when adding shading that is a different tone. IE this months entry you have a guy with a red shirt (flash) but the shadows are not different hues of red, they are def. blue. Where those set with a specialty layer/ brush? or the same opac. rules 10-20%? and do you just know enough color theory to make them match? or is there another "untold" trick i dont know.

Flexo- Nick Bradshaw? *googles* heh- thanks man:) I do love me some evil dead
pt_photo_inc- Great picture man- I really like it :) There no reason that you couldnt colour it - but i think its a strong enough piece without it.
If I get time I would mind slapping something on it though :) I tend to shy away from shading when im inking- it lets me change lighting sources and stuff- but i like what you have done.
As for the multiply etc brushes- i dont really bother. Ive seen some good results from messing with that kind of stuff, but I like to just use normal settings.
Using different colour bases is something that ive only started doing recently- Ill let a pro tell you what exactly is happening

If enough people respond, then I'll send it out by batch this weekend.

Hey- its an update :)
http://staff.straylight-studios.com/joel/omega_WIP6.jpg
It still has a while to go- Have to fix up the snow, and add breath.
On a side note- is omega red alive? I mean would he have steam coming out of his mouth? I always thought he was some robot/cyborgman...
Some good work Sid. I think you could probably add an extra level of darker shadow and a brighter highlight. Its just a matter of practice really, but it looks like your really coming along.
Aquaman- thanks dude :)
Clint- most of my stuff has been pen-scan-colour, but the last few, the flash, aeon and the omega one have been inked using flashMX. I scan in the pencils and draw over them. Im really starting to dig it using flash, sure it takes me longer, but it allows you to be more flexible in changes.
Syncos- jesus has just reach super savior 4 :p

if you made a whole group of them fighting in different weather conditions, that would be so awesome.

I like the clearer sky version, shows more beauty in the coloring and depth to the picture (the snow looked very flat, but I didn't think he was done anyway). It wouldn't hurt to add some snow here, just don't obscure too much of that beautiful sky, man.
EdRyder
07-17-2006, 12:05 AM
I like the newer version best too-good work man.I liked the snowy one as well, but it was too uniform and just looked like one big repeating pattrern
Now,its like I dig the lil bit of snow there Red is kickin up,the glow of his eyes are great and it looks like theres some motion blur goin on with part of Wolvies hair. The sky looks crisp and pretty, the steam popin out wolvies mouth=cool. If anything the only thing you could add is more snow kickin up ,say between wolvies claws and his leg.
Hope that paragraph isnt to heavy for your nuts.

I know I'm in the minority here with this request, but I must ask because he is a fave of mine. Your art is exceptional. So I was wondering what can you do with 'Darkman' in a drawing? Maybe standing in an alley, rain drenching down on him, hiding just enough of his fac under the brim of his hat as lightning flashes.

Oh Peyton and your requests. I felt kinda special there for a moment til I saw that you have written at exact same thing in about 30 other threads- sigh
What a thread whore- im never speaking to you again- I thought we had something good you know... something wonderful- but you had to go and throw it away...
Thanks for the bump guys :)
I havent really been here much lately, mostly because work has been keeping me pretty busy. Hopefully i'll have some new stuff to show over the next couple of weeks :)
The wolverine one is more or less finished. I find it fun doing 90% of pictures- but the last 10% (which happens to be the most important in an image) usually evades me...
Edit- i just noticed that the links to most of my pictures are dead... i may have to fix that at some stage
