Well, think about who might be able to pull it off. Sega? No, they wouldn't have the support of the other developers anymore. EA? Most of their exclusive stuff depends on multi-platform development, from sports to Bond and Potter. So they'd be shooting themselves in the foot if they started making consoles.

The only other multimedia entertainment companies out there are Apple and Disney... and Steve Jobs, Pres. of Apple and Pixar, is now Disney's biggest stockholder. Apple iPod + iVideo + Disney and Pixar... it's a console waiting to happen.

They would be smart NOT to wait until next gen. If they went head-to-head with MS, Sony and Ninty, they'd get killed. However, if they dropped an intro, kid-friendly and inexpensive console out inbetween console generations, then followed it up with the multimedia god machine a gen later, they could rock the whole gaming industry. Say, intro machine in 2008 and killer machine in 2012.

Here's a prophesy for you: Sony's gamble on the blu-ray doesn't pay off, they suffer losses for two more years, and are forced to cash in their chips. Maybe they continue to make games, maybe not. Most of their killer games are other people's games anyway. So let's say Sony's out and Nintendo also gives up on consoles and pulls a Sega.

Now imagine MS with Nintendo's catalog and Apple with Disney/Pixar.

There's your battle for the next decade.

-Apple doesn't make "entry level" The iPod line is clearly weighted towards the 400 dollar model. People who buy Shuffles are poor, and stupid, and Nanos are for a very specific niche.

-Sony isn't going to go belly up on games if Blu-Ray dies. They'll just revamp PS3 not to include it, which wouldn't be too difficult, and stick to DVD9, that said, they don't NEED Blu-Ray to be practical. They need it to dazzle people. I have a piece of **** computer, and that was one game that I thought looked really cool. You can pick your clans and your powers and stuff right?

Yeah, you can pick from several different clans, that unlike other games that claim to change based on player choices, have huge effects on the game. As in, entirely different dialogue trees, play styles, locations, etc. The basic story and such remains the same, but all the little details that change make it almost impossible to not go through as each clan. And even better, each clan is able to adapt to any style of play perfectly and integrate it into their own little set of powers and such. It's really great.

Stop it with your voodoo deception, Sakaguchi went over and maybe a 1-2 other "key" people however the majority of "key" people stayed at Square or went freelance like the composer of Doom. Mistwalker has under 15 employees.
