View Full Version : Christopher Young's Ghost Rider Score
FlameHead

According to a front page article Christopher Young is expected to score Ghost Rider. That's all it pretty much says after it talks about his upcomming work on the next Spider-Man movie, which is the feature of the article (which can be found here by the way: http://www.superherohype.com/news/spider-mannews.php?id=3639).
Christopher has quite the resume folks (including The Shipping News, which is a Newfoundland film. Yay!) and I think would be a great addition to the Ghost Rider family. Check out his IMDB listing: http://imdb.com/name/nm0002366/.
Now, discuss....

thanks for noticing that FH...i just saw that blurb on the saying he was going to score Spiderman 3 so naturally i didnt have any interest in reading the full article...heh
what i noticed was that he composed the music for Hellraiser 1 and 2 ...which im a big fan of. that is some classic stuff right there. his recent stuff though i dont remember too well...even saw the Grudge and nothing really stayed w/ me music wise. will have to watch it again...

...just a sec here...for GR on imdb it says David Arnold for composer/"original music"? wha? could that have been for the comic con trailer?
or did SHH get their info wrong?
FlameHead

As we all know, IMDB takes forever to update. David Arnold could have been the first person known to possibly be doing something for the movie... or maybe is collaborating with Young to do it. Then again, Young may not be doing it at all. It does say "expecting" afterall.
I noticed a few things in his credit list as well, like Nightmare on Elm Street 2 which I'm a huge fan of. Loves Freddy, I do. Also noticed The Big Kahuna... but only because it's a Kevin Spacey flick (like Shipping News) and I'm a huge Spacey fan.

true...and sometimes post wrong info too.
regardless i hope Young does do it as he has more experience than Arnold and has done more memorable scores to boot...
FlameHead
11-16-2005, 07:38 PM
Indeed. I have to agree with you on that one. The more experience the better for me when it comes to this flick. I'm not against givin' the new guy a break but... this is the movie I've been waiting forever for and I wants it done right, every aspect of it.

Well, I just finished wathing Nightmare on Elm Street 2 (I own the box set) and I gotta say, Chris does some great work. Of course, that was the 80's and things are much different these days but, I still feel he would be great for Ghost Rider. What I love most about him is that he has much experience with horror flicks and not just NOES. That gives me addition hope on the horrific side of the movie. Yay for Mr. Young!

I posted the Chris Young info, and it's right.... IMDb is wrong... and they'll take forever to get it correct. They still have Elfman listed for Spider-Man 3, even though everyone in the free world knows that Elfman isn't doing the flick.

That site is where I got my info. They're very, very reliable, since the guy who owns it is very close to the source. He revealed info that has come out months later to the public.. and I've never seen him wrong. Plus, he guaranteed an official announcement soon, which is pretty bold if you're just making up stuff.
It was a "by the way" comment, and since I'm more into Spider-Man than any other movie, I originally submitted the info sans the GR part... but I resubmitted it because I figured you guys would be interested.
I'm not thrilled about him doing Spider-Man 3, and I'm not thrilled about him replacing my favorite composer... but he'll be good for GR, I'm sure. You guys have already looked at his filmography, well he did some additional music for Spider-Man 2 if you were unaware.
Two scenes where he was most noticible was during Ock's demonstration of the arms and his machine in the lab before the Oscorp reps, and the train sequence (which although had a much better version scored by Elfman, is pretty good considering he had little time to put it together).
If you have the movie, check out those two scenes specifically to try and guage an idea of what he's done.

I'm not sure what this composer is capable of bringing to GR. I'll need to watch a few of his movies(scores) and listen and even then you can only wait for the final product next year.
He's certainly seems to be held in high regard thats for sure. If both Raimi ánd MSJ want him for their big-budget flicks he must be doing something right.
Kipobe
11-18-2005, 01:00 PM
Raimi wants him for a handy man patch job. (He was actually cynically reccommended by Elfman in an argument, oddly enough). But him doing Ghost Rider is probably a good fit. It's much more in tone with the character... alot more dark, and as mentioned before, he did the Hellraiser scores, so he may work out well.
Retroman
11-18-2005, 01:07 PM
Yes, it does sound like Raimi doesn't want any input from in terms of music. Thats very sad to hear especially from Elfman.
On Young - Yes, you're right he's done lots of dark movies so i think he might just nail it. Music is sooo important for a movie. I hope he doesn't use too much songs and does more score.
Kipobe
11-18-2005, 01:15 PM
I completely agree, Retro. It's sad too many people don't appreciate it... 'specially those twits over in the Spidey forums.
"Elfman's stuff all sounds alike"
"Couldn't we have a different composer everytime?"
"Music isn't that important anyway"
"The themes are the same, what does it matter?"
"Spider-Man 2 was just rehashed stuff anyway"

You know, I had a thought in mind that would have been relevant to this thread until I read that comment. That just blew me away. Now all I can think about is "Do they think the same about black & white photographs?"
Well, to say something, Young has seemingly done the scores to many films I enjoy over the years (and a few I haven't). I look forward to seeing what he can add to the Ghost Rider movie.

Can't say I remember his music from any of the films I've seen that he's worked on, but he's got a solid resume. Interesting to see he scored Trick or Treat, which brings back memories of my misspent youth, sat in front of the TV watching videos every night! Ragman and Sammy Curr. Cool.

Well, it's completly confirmed that Young is doin' Ghost Rider by this article, found here; http://www.musicfromthemovies.com/article.asp?ID=582
More high profile action gigs for Young:
Christopher Young has more big action stuff than Spider-Man 3 in the pipeline. Also on his future scoring schedule is Ghost Rider, the action thriller directed by Daredevil director Mark Steven Johnson, starring Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze alias Ghost Rider. Just like Daredevil, the film is based on a Marvel comic book. Its cast also includes Eva Mendes, Sam Elliott and Wes Bentley and the film will open on 14 July next year.
Young will follow up his score for The Grudge, composing the sequel music for The Grudge 2, which is being directed by Takashi Shimizu who also helmed the first entry as well as the Japanese original. The sequel is scheduled for release in October next year.
Music from the Movies recommend that you visit the unofficial Christopher Young web site for up to date information about the composer.

Honestly, i didn´t like it.
I was getting used to the David Arnold´s idea.
Is that a confirmation? Young is the scorer of the movie?
I don´t like his filmography. It seems to be old news.
Of course i always respect everyone´s opinion, but i´d like to see some new scorer working in GR. I don´t know, someone like Manson, Reznor of even Zombie.
A few days ago i saw Danny the Dog, starring Jet Li, and the music of the movie was created by Massive Attack.
It was really cool. Modern and new.
Anyway, we´ll see. Maybe Chris Young does a great socre.
Let´s hope.

It definatly is Chris;
3. Can you give any firm details on the composer or songs to be featured in the movie? There've been LOTS of ideas posted here on the Hype!
Christopher Young will be scoring the movie and I'm thrilled. Christopher scored much of Spider-man 2 and is scoring Spider-man 3 after he finishes G.R. He's also scored The Exorcism of Emily Rose, the Hellraiser movies, and many many others. Best of all, he's a comic and horror geek! His office has a collection of HUNDREDS of jack-o-lanterns. He's perfect for this...
19) The IMDB has the composer listed as David Arnold who has also scored films such as CHANGING LANES, DIE ANOTHER DAY, and others, have you had meetings with him as of yet?
Good old IMDB. No, it's Christopher Young. I've never even met David Arnold.

Well, it all depends on the bands used on the soundtrack. I'd prefer a score over a soundtrack, but when if comes to Ghost Rider I'll more than likely pick a copy up for the sake of saying I own it.

It is true, Christopher Young has wrapped work on Ghost Rider already. And theres some other new Rider/score bits too.
'Ghost Rider - The Score'
8/25/2006 With a massive orchestra and choir Christopher Young recorded the score for the upcoming Marvel movie Ghost Rider in June 2006. The score features 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoon, 8 horns, 3 trumpets, 4 trombones, 1 tuba, 4 percussion, 1 harp, 1 piano, 52 strings and 32 choir voices. After having finished Ghost Rider and Lucky You Christopher Young is currentely working on The Grudge 2.'Masterclass in Madrid: Photo essay'
7/18/2006 The first Soncinemad Film Music Festival held in Madrid over the first weekend July was a great success. Jum-packed with two concerts and several seminars by famous composers, one of the highlights was the masterclass by Christopher Young on friday June 30th that I was honoured to announce. During the seminar at the Palacio de Congresos de Madrid Christopher Young talked about his passion for filmmusic, his life and the composition process in general. Besides this he showed the train sequence from Spider-Man 2 that featured his music and highlighted several key moments. He also used the seminar to present his score for Ghost Rider to the audience for the first time by showing the prologue and main titles sequence of the upcoming movie.
On saturday, a CD signing was arranged at the Yelmo Cineplex Ideal, Madrid where fans were able to get their favourite albums autographed by Christopher Young. A small photo essay can be found here.

SM: We feel “Entrapment” is a score more connected with “Hard Rain”. The using of eight french horns outlines even more the romantic side of the story. Do you think that action and adventure movies call for great, epic music? Up to what extend composers are allow to give free reign to their ideas, to choose freely without interferences the thematic and the music or else, they are subject to some “indications” or “guidelines” from the director or the producer?
CY: Indeed, “Entrapment” is a score connected to “Hard Rain” even now I don´t really remember the scores, I do remember being similar. Eight french horns: I´ve used them a lot, probably too much now. I´ve used in “Entrapment”, I´ve used in “Hard Rain”, I´ve used again in “Ghost Rider”, I like eight horns. The composers are not given free reign to do anything. There are given guidelines. And then you work within those guidelines. So I have to say I have never been given entirely free reign.

And another interview (done in March, 2006):
Let’s take a look at the future. What are your upcoming projects this year?
Although it won’t be released until next year, I sat down with Mark Steven Johnson, the director of “Ghost Rider”, a couple of days ago and we started to talk about the music. I probably saw 40 minutes of the movie in his editing room and I am just about to get a copy of the movie to see the entire thing for the first time. The composing process is really in the beginning, so I do not have the foggiest idea of what I am going to do; I haven’t written a single note for it yet.

New interview with with Young about GR.
From the Hollywood Reporter:
Christopher Young
"Ghost Rider" (Sony; Release Date: Feb 16)
"The film opens up with Johnny Blaze, a youngster, working with his dad in a motorcycle daredevil show for a traveling circus. His father is dying of cancer, and so the devil, played by Peter Fonda, shows up and offers to save his father if Johnny will sign his soul away. So, Johnny does that to try to help his father, and then ironically, the following day his father, who has gotten rid of the cancer, gets in a motorcycle accident and dies anyway. So, the Ghost Rider is an indentured servant to the devil; he is waiting for the devil to call him to take his soul away. And he, himself, becomes a daredevil motorcycle rider, sort of like Evel Knievel. The devil shows up one day and says, 'Here's your job: 'I'm gonna turn you into this Ghost Rider, so you'll have the power to do battle with Blackheart.' So, the score has to keep it dark.
"The main function of the score is to give the film epic proportions and yet keep the comic book flavor. The music adds to the epic nature and illuminates the fact that it's about a comic book character.
"What (director Mark Steven Johnson ) said he wanted was definitely a melody-driven score. He wanted the Ghost Rider (Nicolas Cage) to have a main theme. But what made it interesting is that he said he wanted the score to be an odd hybrid of Gothic Western industrial music.
"All the action takes place in the Midwest. Unlike Superman, Spiderman or Batman, who are superheroes that do work in the city, here we're talking about a character that rides around in the desert on a motorcycle. So, the location and the Midwestern element had to be worked in to the score, (which is) Gothic (-sounding) because it's just a very dark story line. The Ghost Rider has a pact to work with the devil.
"A lot of the film is jam-packed with action, and certainly, the music helps push the film forward. It illuminates his character and the whole nature of the film.
"In order to communicate the Western element, there were some guitars; there were acoustic guitars. There was a trumpet used, but in the end, it was more industrial, less Western. I used electric guitars and some members of Nine Inch Nails. The Western aspect of the score got diminished; there's very little of that left. It's more Gothic-industrial. I would have to say that it's an exciting score and unlike anything I've scored before."Source: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/search/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003528109

Christopher Young scares up a score for Ghost Rider
By Patrick Luce Feb 5, 2007, 15:18 GMT
Young used drums, choir, a "gigantic orchestra" and electric guitars played by two members of Nine Inch Nails. In the end, the score ended up more industrial than Western, though acoustic guitars do give a flavor of the latter.
Composer Christopher Young has scared up a killer score for Ghost Rider - the Columbia Pictures released based on the popular Marvel comic character. Starring Nicholas Cage, Eva Mendes and Peter Fonda, this dark Super Hero actioner follows stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze who gives up his soul to become a hellblazing vigilante, to fight against power hungry Blackheart, the son of the devil himself. The film opens February 16th, the same day Varese Sarabande has the score CD in stores.
Young explains. "What is unique is that unlike Superman, Spiderman or Batman, who are Super Heroes that do their work in the city, here we're talking about a character that rides around on a motorcycle. So the location had to be worked in to the score, and it had to have gothic in it because it's just a very dark storyline."
Young used drums, choir, a "gigantic orchestra" and electric guitars played by two members of Nine Inch Nails. In the end, the score ended up more industrial than Western, though acoustic guitars do give a flavor of the latter. "It's an exciting score," he says. "It was unlike anything I've done."
Young's distinctive and imaginative approaches to several unusual projects have made him a highly sought-after commodity on films with unusual subject matter. He wrote an ingenious score incorporating breathing effects for the offbeat film The Vagrant; provided a darkly dramatic score to the Christian Slater/Kevin Bacon prison drama Murder in the First; and tuned in perfectly to the offbeat sensibility of the Bill Murray comedy The Man Who Knew Too Little.
His long list of works include the scores for Hellraiser and its sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser II; Norman Jewison's Hurricane, starring Denzel Washington; plus such hits as Runaway Jury, The Shipping News," The Core and The Grudge.
One of the most skilled of a new generation of film composers who are able to move effortlessly between hardcore melodrama and off-the-wall satire and comedy, Young next turns his attention to Lucky You, a drama with Robert Duvall and Drew Barrymore that marks the second time Young has worked with director Curtis Hanson following their previous collaboration on Wonder Boys. The film opens March 16.
Later in 2007, Young returns to the world of the Super Hero as he scores the much-anticipated Spider-Man 3, once again starring Tobey Maquire and Kristen Dunst.
‘Ghost Rider (Score)’ is now available for pre-order at Amazon. Visit the soundtrack database for more information and a complete track listing.

Well if the CD is shipping from anywhere in the Midwest of the states especailly NY there has been ALOT of snow there.
Parts of NY has had 12+ feet of snow! I'm actually surprised FH,MM, and BG made it safe to the Premire.

NYC barely got 2 inches, even though everyone in the city is acting like it's 2 feet. Upstate git hit the hardest. One town was snowed on for over a week.

Is there no album (music inspired by) to be released for GR?
LonelyHero06

There's no "music inspired by" album, just an original score for the film. Kind of weird since Johnson's last comic movie (daredevil) had an album.

I am going to answer my own question. The music during the first transformation is at the end of the track "The West Was Built On Legends". So if anyone wants to know now you know

Really? The parts I've heard have been cool... but the best ever? Better than any of the Batman films (they all had tremendous scores)? Better than Spider-Man's, or one of the greatest scores of all time in Superman: The Movie? I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself...or you just haven't listened to very many superhero scores.

I never liked those scores (Batman maybe but I hate Superman's and Spidey was OK). The only one that I liked as much as GR's was John Ottman's score for original X-Men.

How could anybody hate Superman's? I can understand hating the main theme, because it does show up so often, but you hate the Krypton, love, and Smallville/home themes?
Michael Kamen did the score to X-Men, John Ottman did X2.
If I'm coming off sounding mean, I'm not trying to be, I just want to understand what makes GR so much better than all these other wonderful scores.

Michael Kamen did the score to X-Men, and if I heard correctly, he didn't even do all of it because he became quite ill so others were brought in to finish it.
That's not correct! Kamen wrote a complete score but the producers wanted a modern touch to the score so they hired Klaus Badelt who did a kind of "face lift" to Kamen's score by adding some electronic percussions.
