View Full Version : Tom Welling as Superman

Thanks for answering me, Pat. I figured that was what Jack's post was saying, but gosh...I never really know for sure anymore.
So, I guess this is yet another confirmation that Tom won't be anywhere near this JLA film; which is a bummer. I was looking forward to seeing him don the cape. I guess this just reconfirms Zings earlier posts as well. I believe he said it wasn't going to happen with Tom. I just can't remember if Zing mentioned if the rumors of Tom actually being considered were true or not. Guess it doesn't much matter now anyway.
I know for a fact, on good authority, that Welling was at least considered for the role.

So Miller is working on another movie while he is in pre production on Justice League ? Is he quitting Justice League

Well if Miller quits...Please hire Sam Raimi. He knows how to handle a comic book hero.
And you know news about Welling is light. Since most of the threads have been about Miller and the proper spelling of "casted". ;)

How about an episode in which he does all of the above, for more than five seconds apiece?
:woot::woot::woot::woot::woot:
I *like* Aquadude. And yes, I think we need a Harry Potter-esque underwater rescue scene. Some evil mer-dude can take Lana, Lois, and Chloe hostage; Clark and Arthur have to save them before their oxygen runs out - but they only (seem to) have time to save two of the gals. [Yes, I suppose we could let Kara help - give the guys some screen time & solve the problem - but I'd prefer a Clarkie solution :->]
There's a heat wave in Smallville. Clark starts out in flannels. Moves to overalls & a white tee. Takes off the (very sweaty) tee - it's an abnormal heat wave! - and puts on a clean white sleeveless undershirt. Burns through that - literally - and rips off the smoldering wifebeater (I hate that term!)
You know, I don't like the wife-beater term either but it seems like if I had called it a "tank top" people wouldn't know what I was talking about...
and finishes up his chores in just the overalls. Eventually changes (!!!) into his swim trunks & heads down to the lake to cool off. Arthur finds him there; informs him that evil mer-dude has some sort of power station underwater that's frying the atmosphere. It's tinted with greenK, which is why Clark was sweating. Arthur will take out the greenK part of the station while Clark deals with the parts less hazardous to him. They go underwater. That's when Clark discovers his trio of imprisoned babes and has to rescue them AND help Arthur before something implodes/explodes and kills Arthur...
LOL!
I love it...
Actually I *cough* read *cough* a fanfic that had a scenario where Clark had a Laundry Emergency (http://dm-wyatt.livejournal.com/14202.html) and went a whole episode in just his boxers...
:ninja:
You might want to check it out, only slightly clexy...

On the roll call are Adam Brody (Fox's "The O.C."), Joseph Cross ("Running With Scissors"), D.J. Cotrona ("Windfall"), Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Grindhouse"), Michael Angarano ("Sky High"), Teresa Palmer ("Wolf Creek"), Max Thieriot ("Jumper") and rapper Common.

I see. So she isn't as random as I thought, I remember and actress from Wolf Creek trying out, I guess I didn't care enough at the time. :csad:Oh, her name has DEFINITELY come up - like "officially" come up. Nobody has been confirmed for the roles yet, though that article I posted earlier today said the actress herself said she got it. That's what I found interesting. Again... not that I care until we hear something official. I'm trying not to sweat the small stuff right now.
I want to see a great cast, but I'll be less critical of them if I get what I want for Big Blue. *cough* I'm not ashamed to admit that; this is entertainment after all, and I know what entertains me. Immensely. Now if they cast some no-name pencil-neck geek from Po Dunk Indiana as Superman (no offense to pencil-neck geeks from Po Dunk Indiana), the rest of the cast BETTER be smokin', because if they're just "blah," the film will just be "blah" to me too, and that's regardless of how good the story or production is. Story is important, characters are fun, but it's the actors who I watch.

Interesting news on the potential strike, the producers have presented the WGA with a new deal in hopes of bringing them back to the bargaining table:
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117974760.html?categoryid=18&cs=1
Here's some of what the article says:
But the companies' new proposal may meet strong resistance since it doesn't include any change in several key WGA demands including a boost in DVD residuals, and hikes in the minimum rates for The CW and MyNetwork.
The move to present a new proposal came after two days of huddling by execs to hammer out a strategy to avert a strike, which could start as early as next Thursday. Counter has expressed his frustration repeatedly with the WGA over its refusal to budge from its initial package of 26 proposals, first presented three months ago when negotiations launched.
It's the second move by the AMPTP in the past two weeks to salvage the negotiations. Counter took the companies' controversial residuals revamp -- which would have tied payouts to the recoupment of basic costs -- off the table on Oct. 16 but the WGA leaders were unimpressed and asserted that the AMPTP should have never made the proposal in the first place.
The guild has insisted it won't discuss the other AMPTP proposals until they're modified to take so-called "rollbacks" off the table - including no coverage for new media such as streaming and cell-phone mobisodes; the right to credit any amounts due a writer against other payments; elimination of the requirement that writing credits appear in publicity and advertising; and restrictions in the ability of writers to exploit TV rights and reacquire screenplays.

You know what's amazing, it does not matter what website, board, thread or blog you're on, if it has to do with Justice League or Superman, Tom Welling dominates the discussion. What else can be said but, WB, cast him already.^ This is EXACTLY why Warner Bros. is paying attention.
Lets face it people, fans have been wanting this for a VERY long time.
Before Singer was announced, a bogus report was written by an overzealous fan that sent fandom into a tailspin. Here's the original article:
http://www.prweb.com/releases/2004/5/prweb129294.htm
And here's the retraction/explanation/apology:
http://screenrant.com/archives/tom-wellingsuperman-movie-rumo-76.html
But the damage was done. Tons of sites picked up on that and I think Warners sat up and paid some attention. That was back in freakin' 2004. It's just crazy now.
You know all of the size/muscle arguments? They see that stuff.
You know all of the unrelated references on other tv shows and movies? They see that stuff.
You know all of the SV and TW fansites with THOUSANDS of registered users? They see that stuff.
You know all of the top selling home video sales for Superman titles? They see that stuff.
I'm the first person to label Warner Bros. dumber than a box of rox, but they're not blind. Truth be told, the idea of putting Welling in the tights in a FEATURE FILM has been discussed since 2003. This aint new, and it's not news. It's just finally starting to come to fruition. Fingers crossed people. Fingers crossed....

Regardless a show with 5 million viewers on good ratings is still not enough of a voice to be a reason WB wants Welling in a big screen adaption. If it were to happen it's because a director maybe did like him on SV personally and wanted a screen test and if cast, decided he would work for the script he is shooting. It would not be due to the fan size imo though.

umm??Only thing I can think of is, if they did indeed go with name actors - the kiddies were tested for reality confirmation. Basically: "Lets see how this looks before we rule 'em out."
That said, Winsted could still be considered a "name" actress. She WAS in Die Hard 4 and Sky High. Those weren't exactly indie productions. Reynolds and Welling ARE names, no matter how much people want to argue it though - and I'm sure some would.
My interest emphasis is obviously on the Superman casting (duh!), but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't almost equally interested to find out who the HELL they got to play Batman. THAT role is going to be just as pivotal.

However, I meant that image just might be a visual metaphor for Tom too, not just for Clark.
Clark is walking away from his future there, going back to the house and to Lana and away from his destiny, but is Tom walking away from another possible future there as well?

You always hear that there's a fear to being typecast as Superman, and having your career ruined. I'm sure that runs through the mind, but just as much, it's one's chance to be immortal.
He may never do another thing again, but if he pulls off being Superman, he'll live on forever. Long after he dies people will still post pictures of him, speak of him with reverence.
Not many human beings get to say that.
And given that he'd have played the character for 7 years before he launched into playing him another 7 years on the big screen (if successful), you can pretty much bet he'd go down THE Superman. How hard would it be for any other person to top the amount of time he'd put in as the character? Even now, it'll be hard for anyone to top him.
In the short term it might make someone think twice, but when you're old/nearing the end of your journey, and fame has loooong since faded, I'm sure anyone would think of it differently.

While I would love for this to be true, Reynolds (from what I know) has taken on 2 other projects that would completely interfere with shooting for JLA. That doesn't mean he can't walk away from one or both if offered a role in JLA, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I think there's still a better chance of Welling as Superman than Reynolds for Flash.

Look at it this way. The WB knows that everyone wants Reynolds as Flash, but Miller/Co. Maybe wants someone younger. Maybe for once they listened, got Reynolds to play Barry and someone else as Wally. Barry probably won't be in much of this film anyway so it doesn't really need to interfere with Reynolds other projects.

The information I have so far about the cast list, Teresa Palmer is not Wonder Women. It may have changed, but I doubt it. Remember, tons of sites covered the Rupert Evans as Superman story and I shot that rumor down in less than 24 hours CLICK HERE (http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=170&func=view&id=2686&catid=20&limit=6&limitstart=60). Robert provided back up to my post by contacting the same source.
The full cast is coming out in few days. Whether its me or Robert who posts it or not, someone is gonna leak it out.[/COLOR]

I would love to see Welling as Superman. But I don't see it happening unlike Routh I don't see Welling wanting to be known as Superman for the rest of his life. If anything I see Welling more like G. Reeves in the terms that he wants to move on to other things but most people (mainly fans ) will not allow it. Meaning I think he is thankful for the role and for the love and support his fans show him but he doesn't want to spend the rest of his life as Superman. He has been doing it for 7 years (maybe 8 if there is an 8th season) I don't see him wanting to play Superman for another 5 to 7 years.

For me, it's not that Jayne is saying she's wasn't disappointed, it's these lines..."If this comes to fruition, I'm gonna have a field day with this 1, for all of those who took Gough's & Noveck's words as gospel..

It's sooooo hard not to be sucked into all this continous hype and these innuendos. So hard. I know this is just entertainment, but it'd sure be nice to have it specifically catered to my wishes. :woot:

Is she saying what I think she's saying? :wow:
I think so!
We can only hope.
Maybe...
I don't think that will happen in this day and age, but we'll see...
He'll have to smart about it, like Chris was, and choose his projects more carefully than he has up until this point in his career.
*blinkblink*
If, um.. this cast list is revealed this morning. SOMEONE PM ME (please).
I will call even...

To try and answer everyones questions without several posts...
1. Casting is done and everyone from what I'm told is under contract. Only two names are still being confirmed.
2. Jon Stewart is Green Lantern in this film.
3. There will be two people playing Flash. Barry Allen will die and Wally West will take over.
4. Teresa Palmer is not on the list I was given and I'm waiting to hear back from her agent or someone else in the office.Morning, folks! LOL

I like the serious approach Singer and Nolan took, but to pull off JL, you have to abandon that way or radically alter the premise like the Ultimates.
ON a side note, Avengers is silly too, but Ultimates did provide a plausible template on how to do it,imo.
"MOS" will happen, but probably not in a form most people are expecting right now.
I know that lawsuit with the Siegels is a factor, plus Shuster's family comes into it in 2012. I don't think the WB is sure what to do right now.
Fair enough. I'm pretty sure it'll be a fun movie no matter who is cast - even if it were Routh as Superman :p - but I totally understand having disinterest based on individual biases.
I actually didn't want Routh in it. Batman vs. Superman could have worked.
But I am glad you Wellingites will get the chance to post pics of him in the actual suit instead of manups.

I'm being pessimistic in hope of being surprised. Dougherty and Harris aren't necessary(it's rare that the same writers write an entire trilogy), but for me Singer is. It was his aesthetics(colors, sets and camera angles)that made the movie work for me. I think the WB could go either revamp or sequel at this point depending on script.

Kind of off base, but didnt the first 14 pages of the script start off with the heros assembled for a funeral? If the rumors of 2 flashes are true then it could be his death they are there for? Just a thought. As much as I want reynolds as the flash i didnt think they would cast him as Allen and then kill him to have Wally take over? I could be way off base though.

Well, that is one way to get out of doing sequels...It's a win/win, init? Give the fans what they want AND appease the actor at the same time.
Of course, there's sooooo many ways of appeasing actors these days. I believe Jack Nicholsen is "appeased" to this day. :)
I like the serious approach Singer and Nolan took, but to pull off JL, you have to abandon that way or radically alter the premise like the Ultimates. The 14 page script leak (the new one) sounds pretty serious. It doesn't sound like they're going for camp, though to any non-comic book fan, the costumes alone do make it seem silly. But if they got away with it in SR, I don't see why they couldn't in JL.

We try not to discuss Brandon much in this forum so I will make this short and sweet. I liked Brandon and throughout the movie i kept saying to myself dang he really reminds me of Reeve, but thats not what i really wanted when it came down to it. Reeve's interpretation is just that his. I think if they would have allowed Brandon to take his own direction maybe he could have done something more with the role. i thought he was a fine Superman and I wouldnt have minded seeing him as Big Blue again, but as much as I loved SR I really do i think we need something fresh and something new. i think tom brings that. Thats why i continue to watch Smallville every thursday at 7. I mean the hot chicks are great but lets face it Tom makes that show for me. Thats why through all the crappy writing and horrible scripts they have from time to time i still watch because Tom sales Clark Kent and even though he isnt Superman.... yet i see Superman everytime i tune in. And thats why i hope against all hope that he can don the tights. I do love how that guy from Warner said that having Welling as Supes would confuse people. That's absurd. So having another guy play Supes after we just saw Routh in a Superman movie is not confusing? Please. People are smart enough to realize its a movie and it may not be the same.
On a side note. I would love to know Welling's reaction to fans hope to see him in a Superman movie. Assuming the jokes and story of last nights episode. I am sure the writers and producers know. ;)
And finally on Routh. I had nothing against him. I was just so completely turned off by the story and character backgrounds. I didn't want a remake/sequel to a 30yr old movie. I didn't want characters based on a out of date background (ie-Lex not a corporate villain) and I despised the whole him leaving for 5yrs and the especially the kid storyline. What I loved is the scene where he rescues the plane. If this movie would have been like Batman Begins. That scene would have been the perfect way to introduce the world (& Lois) to Superman. Thats all I have to say about that. ;)
Now, back to our regular scheduled programming...Hoping for Welling as Supes.

I've been following JLA news since it broke, and as far as I can tell, there was never any interest in Routh, even when they wanted Bale. The only talk of Routh in the rumor mill was that the studio wasn't going to have him.

actually its more like the guys inside WB who are doing JLA are anti-SR, and therefor they want nothing to do with Routh, lest the public think the 2 are related.
As for Bale, he was never even asked. Although him saying "no" to anything wouldn't matter. Per his contract, they could've used him for Batman in a JLA if they wanted to, but WB prefers to keep his franchise with Nolan running.

I was thinking about what emijayne said above, and as much as I want to believe that she's happy because Tom was cast (and we know how much she wants that), I think there's another situation that might make her almost as happy - knowing for SURE that Routh wasn't cast. She seems to detest Routh almost as much, or even more than she loves Tom.
So her happiness could simply be knowing that even though Tom is definitely out, they still cast someone with potential that *wasn't* Routh.
I'm hoping that she's happy because it IS Tom, but I'm trying to not count on that anymore.

Which Supervillains Must Contend With The JUSTICE LEAGUE??
I am – Hercules!!
A reputable (if technically untested) source says he’s read the new “Justice League of America” script and lived to tell of it. This info below is teeming with major spoilers (especially if you haven’t read any DC Comics in a few years), so we have cloaked our source's answers in the miracle that is invisotext.
Keep in mind that this is a script that was maybe written before George Miller came aboard the project as director a few weeks ago. Since Miller typically writes or co-writes the movies he directs, things could change by the time “League” makes the leap to cinemas.
JLA FAQ

It does not.
Has Batman met all the superheroes he has under surveillance?

Are the heroes surprised Batman knows all their
secret identities?

With which supervillains must the League contend?
Maxwell Lord, Talia al Ghul (daughter of “Batman Begins’” Ra’s al Ghul) and the Omacs.

Not so much.

We see Atlantis briefly, no Paradise Island.
Do Hawkman, The Atom, Green Arrow, Zatanna, Hal Jordan
or Black Canary appear and/or exist in this universe??
No.
Are Aquaman, Wonder Woman, The Flash(es), Batman,
Superman, John Stewart and J'onn J'onzz the only DC
superheroes in the movie?
Yes.
A living, breathing Barry Allen appears in the script. Is Wally West in the movie as well?
Both Wally and Barry are heavily featured in the film, and are the best written characters in the script.
What’s the best thing about the script?
Best thing about the script besides all the Flashes stuff is the fight with Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.
Is that Barry Allen’s funeral at the start of the script?
Yes.

Serene, I doubt it has to do with Routh not being cast. That's been pretty common knowledge for a while that he wasn't asked.
What ZIPBAGS said.
I truly hope you guys are right.
I'm just putting up buffers in case you're not. Part of me says it's definitely Tom, but I'm afraid to believe it. We've been so disappointed before by unsubstantiated rumors. My battle armor has worn very thin.

It seems very unlikely that she'd be happy for another reason but you never know, she'd have to explain that 1.
You either want to believe it, or you don't. ;)

If it turns out that the Teresa chick is WW then I'll take what emi said about Welling with a grain of salt, but she's been pretty accurate so far.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm finding myself pulled into this thread every day like some kind of nutjob. It's the first thing I do when I get to my office. If there's a computer around with an internet connection during my travels I'm checking. I look as soon as I get home at night, and it's one of the last things I do before I go to sleep. My wife thinks I have some sort of secret relationship. The funny thing is that when we do find out who it will be, whether it's our man Tom or someone else, I know we'll all still be here. Good, bad or indifferent. Help!!!

I think when you have a guy with a large fan base playing the character (Welling) and guy with a who has just played the character (Routh) who has a fan base of his own you make it VERY hard to recast the character.
Also few big name actors want the role it seems as they are scared of type casting and the unknown route (Routh ) did'nt work out to well.So again it make's Welling look the best choice.

I just visited that forum, maybe it was a mistake. From the looks of things already, not a whole lot of love for Tom. Reads like a bunch of highschoolers.
No intelligent life there.

Being someone that spends alot of time here I find it refreshing that not everyone loves Tom Welling as Superman. I guess I am a bit more open minded :o. This does not mean that I hate Tom Welling as Superman by the way but when everyone agrees on the same thing things suck.

I find Tom is a love or hate fella with regards being cast as Superman on SHH anyway.
2 factors are
a)People who dislike Smallville for not being accurate to the comics.
b)Alot of Routh fans...which I can get, if they said Routh was going to replace Tom on Smallville I'd be pissed :oldrazz:
With all due respect I just wish these people with contacts would stop the hints and winks and just shut up until they can actually say something. To me it's a lot more annoying then the cast not revealed yet. You see Sanchez giving hints and winks and then when asked about it he ignores the posts. If they don't want to say what they know they should not say anything at all, it feels like I'm in high school.

For me it doesn't make sense to look past Routh & Welling. If it isn't Routh, it should Welling and vice versa. Whether it is in fact Welling, that is another question.

They are good at going into silent mode after teasing, anyone know why? Why even say anything at all?
