View Full Version : Tom Welling as Superman

Right so Welling and the producers just don't know what they are talking about when they say he is not playing Superman. Lets face it right now there are 4 official Supermen out there.
1. Routh
2. Legion of Super-Heroes Superman
3. Timm Superman
4. Comics
after that there is no one else right now. Welling may be Superman to you but he is not officially Superman yet we now he may one day wear the tights but things might change.

wait so are you trying to say that the second clark kent (any version) put on the suit, he was a fully-actualized kryptonian...and from that day forward he never learned a single lesson about life or humanity or his own culture or any culture again?

Really.. once the interviewers finish, they all laugh about it. Really. They all know who Supes really is. Just read Pat's sig. :hyper:

honestly, with all the debate about whether clark kent or superman or kal-el is the real identity, when he puts on the suit, traveling the world, hibernating in the FOS, training with jor-el, the superBOY legal battles, .....
apart from all that....those are all just facets of the same character...one man. and just like i am not the same person i was when i was ten and am not now the same person that i'll be when i turn 40...or 50...that doesn't mean today yesterday and tomorrow i won't be

Well if you say so. I recall Welling saying something about having the Superman universe all to himself prior to Superman Returns being released. I'm paraphrasing of course, I'm sure someone here knows the exact quote.

You're bashing the opinion of Jeph Loeb - the writer of SFAS and Superman/Batman, among a bunch of other amazing accomplishments in comicdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeph_Loeb) - because he worked on SV, and you don't like what he did with Supergirl?

After just getting done watching the Donner Cut of SII, I gotta admit, there were some scenes of Reeve in the fortress where Reeve looked stunningly like Welling.
Also, I like that Smallville is taking the Jor-El/Clark relationship in a new direction, but the Brando scenes in RD's Cut were so incredible that it kinda makes me miss that relationship in Smallville. Still, RD's Cut reminded me once again of, despite my nitpicks, what Smallville gets so right about Superman.

The Donner cut is very good. It is like watching a whole other movie to be honest. I mean if you watch that (Donner's Superman II) then SR makes much more sense because you see where they are going off of more and it falls right in line with the theme or Donner's movie (The Father becomes the son thing).

Three hundred dollars for the first five seasons? Huh? That's 60 bucks per set. You can buy some sets for 20 clams now.
In the words of Henry Lee, something not right. LOL It must not be in US Dollars or something.
As to what the show is "based" on, well it's based on seven decades of Superman mythology, of course. Did they go overboard with certain homages? Well, maybe, but it's debatable. I think they created a lot more new stuff than they borrowed old stuff, and they definitely elaborated on certain aspects that were *never* addressed before, so it's all good. :)
Maybe I missed something. When in the past 5 yrs has SV used footage from any of the Donner movies?Actual footage? Well, off the top of my head, the FOS scene in Arrival is one (Clark sees a few glimpses of the destruction of Krypton. Was great stuff, and lifted DIRECTLY out of S:TM.)

Most people have no idea what the difference is between Golden and Silver Age, they never heard of Byrne, and they're eyes would gloss over if you even tried to explain what the "Crisis" was. Figures, they need everything they can get for this one to beef up the sales. But I don't think it's right because some people are buying it for the other stuff. And beside it costs a lot more so they will ad that price in? too funny.

In my opinion SR should have never gone in that set period. It should have been strictly The Christopher Reeve collection. Now whats to stop WB as the sequels come out to do more Christopher Reeve Box Sets with SR & its sequels every few years. I do agree that adding SR to the Christopher Reeve box set was done as a cheap way so SR can sell

Isn't that what Smallville's all about? It's Clark's JOURNEY towards the man he will become. That's why I watch - we know how it's going to end, and we get to see him progress into this other person.

That's what happens when you give the job to run a big studio like the WB to a bunch of retards!
Those people don't know what they are doing with MOST of their high profile characters, and it's a shame because they own the rights to some of the best characters.
They don't want to listen to the fan's who have been yelling pretty loud online, and at the boxoffice the last 10 years.
They keep this up, and we might never see another Superman movie after the flop in 2009.

While I loved those movies, and all it's sequels even the 4th I will say that they are really outdated, and are really only worth watching because of Chris Reeve, and that's the truth... He was AMAZING in the role!
They will always be great movies due to the fact that he was in them.
His Superman was the best to date by far, and as far as the "human face" to Superman he has simply been the ULTIMATE SUPERMAN since the first movie came out.
But guess what? So was George Reeves before Chris, and they looked NOTHING alike... Not even CLOSE!
Neither did Kirk Alyn, or Dean Cain, or even the Superboy's who played on the same show but in diffrent seasons.
I stick to my guns when I say that every film or tv adaptation of the character should have only 1 human face per generation who plays the role for a few movies, and maybe in tribute to the Reeve movies have every new face to the role do 4 movies...
But please don't have a cheap clone of Chris Reeve or any of the past actor's badly spit out a few lines from Superman the movie!
They should all bring their own style, and look to the role, and Tom Welling has that, and the way he plays the role on a show with some of the worst writting on tv history really reminds me of Chris in the sense that he also had no help from the writers with his version of Superman.
But like Chris, Tom has a new fresh take on the role, and when they get it right on the show (the writers) they really get it right!
But for each Generation their should only be 1, and remember the ever changing face of Bruce Wayne in 4 movies is what ended that franchise... Until Bale/Nolan put life back into the BAT.
Now Bale is this generations Face to the role, and I wouldnt even want to see an elseworld take on the character on tv in ANY form!
Think about this! If im wrong then why did they axe Bruce Wayne from coming out on SMALLVILLE?
Same thing is what happened with the new movie you already have established a new guy in the role for the past 5 years, and people for the most part as most polls will tell you feel like Tom is this generations face to the role, and now try to bring someone like Brandon into the picture, and all it does is confuse your fanbase, and create more of a mess then you would have had they just let Smallville run its course on tv, and done maybe Tv movies or Big screen Superman movies with the Smallville cast.
Or if the WB really just doesn't want to do that then wait a good 5 years after the show is off the air, and start over with an entire new cast which has a guy who looks the part just all the past Superman but looks original at the same time in the role, and is an actor who looks like an adult or atleast older then Tom Welling who's playing the teenage role on tv now.
I mean Brandon couldnt even pull that off! So that's the first thing I would do, and then the 2nd would be I would hire a real good Director, and some real good writers... Then make sure that for the love of god!
Don't make Superman "an idiot" a "stalker" a "bad lover" a "Bad father" a "Wimp" and please make sure he doesn't look EMO!
No EMO Superman! Please! Just say no to EMO MAN!

By the way I also WONT be buying the new BOX SETS because they have SUPERMAN RETURNS in em, and I refuse to help them make a penny on that movie.
I would love it if they took the movie out of the boxset, and threw it out along with all the artwork, and stuff they did for SR in the boxset, and insert an extra dvd with more stuff on the original 4 movies.
I have the original boxset on DVD, and so It's cool I don't need to buy the new set.. I already have The Donner Cut, and will live happy with what I have.

So you say FanBoy but at my Best Buy the single copies of SR where flying off the shelf and when I went to blockbusters to rent Clerks II SR was all gone so there are alot of people who must have liked it. Then is nothing wrong with liking both.
Holy crap was the Donner cut awesome or what?! Lois was so much like the Lois on SV in this. I have a lot of respect for Margot but never really liked her a lot doing Lois. The scene after the fortress is destroyed was reminding me of Welling and Erica so much when they started talking, wow. I don't think Margot ever looked so good than in these scenes.

Isn't that what Smallville's all about? It's Clark's JOURNEY towards the man he will become. That's why I watch - we know how it's going to end, and we get to see him progress into this other person.
But right now, that journey has a few potholes and bumps.

I don't honestly see how saying "I like SR" or "I don't like SV" is reportable. I don't ban people without reason. This is a topic for debate, not ass kissing. I honestly see nothing wrong with the "reported post" in this thread. Just keep SR's dvd sales in SR's forums and everyone grow a thicker skin.
Just to point out though, this is NOT carte blanche to run wild through either forum and cackle madly about how much you hate whatever. If you can point out why you don't like Welling without bragging about Routh, and vice versa, you are allowed to make your opinions. thats to be expected though- i'm glad that the TV incarnations aren't getting a rough deal- maybe its because SV is still going and some see it as an unimportant version(considering he doesn't play 'superman').Still would have been nice:)

In the Wizard 2007 Movie Spectacular (a special edition of the magazine that focuses on movies/tv), there is a six-page feature called "The Best of Smallville" in which the writers run down the best (and worst) of the first six seasons in unique categories such as Best DC Superhero Appearance, Biggest Tease (Besides Lana), "Holy S--T!" Moments #1 & 2, etc.
Here's what they said for "Best Episode" (Rosetta)
Long before "Superman Returns" was even in the cards, Christopher Reeve appeared on "Smallville," passing the Super-mantle to Tom Welling. Reeve played Dr. Virgil Swann (named for prolific Superman artist Curt Swan) a reclusive scientist who told Clark about Krypton and his heroic destiny. It gave fans their first real "Smallville" glimpse into Clark's Superman future. With John Williams' music behind him, Reeve's first appearance made "Rosetta" the best episode of the series.
For "Best Heroic Clark Moment" they chose this:
As meteors rained down on Smallville for the second time in two decades, Clark raced through town saving people, including a little boy who was nearly squashed by a giant rock. That is about as perfectly Superman as it gets!

I agree about "Rosetta", it was my favorite from the series also.
My favorite heroic moment from the series might have to be the leap to the missile and tearing out it's core. Then falling back to Earth after it exploded. How I loved "Hidden".:woot:

Whoops. I left that one out! Here's their pick for "Most Supermanish Moment"
A high school student fires a nuclear missle at Smallville. As only Superman can, Clark flies (technically a leap, but we know what we saw) into space to stop it. Thankfully he doesn't throw it into the sun, creating Nuclear Man!

Donner and Routh basically say they hated Dean Cains performance.
Donner says nothing of Wellings acting ability and Routh actually says that Welling is a good actor and that he plays a very different character from what he did. It is also a different time that he is playing him in as well.

I liked Dean as Superman but thought he looked a bit awkward in the suit (plus I don't like his hair slicked back like that). I *loved* him as Clark, and thought he and Teri were great together.

I just hate how hard some people are on Cain as Superman.
His Clark Kent was better than his Superman, but the show highlighted Clark Kent's side of the personality more than the Superman, so it worked out.

Routh doesn't take Cain seriously? That made me laugh. After watching the show on dvd again recently I can now look past the horrible plots in seasons 3 & 4 and appreciate that Cain despite them is pretty amazing in in the show.
Cain might have looked awkward at times in the tights but made up for it in any scene that really required him to step up. His Clark was fantastic and the chemistry with Hatcher made for some of the most glorious TV that I've ever seen. Routh however looked awkward all of the time in SR.

O yeah I totally agree. His Clark was such a new and interesting take from the bumbling buffoon of Reeve it was nice to see change. "Clark's beginning to experience what it's really like to be a superhero. And he's going through the challenges of, you know, unless he meets that superhero woman, how can he connect with another person," says Swimmer.
"It's the plight of Superman being half-human and half-alien," says Slavkin. "I will tease out a wonderful red-kryptonite episode coming up" just in time for Valentine's Day. "And let's just say his valentine in that episode will floor our audience."

"It's the plight of Superman being half-human and half-alien," says Slavkin. "I will tease out a wonderful red-kryptonite episode coming up" just in time for Valentine's Day. "And let's just say his valentine in that episode will floor our audience."
I'm guessing the "no flights" rule is gonna get bent again, BIG TIME! :D
More spoilers from Slavkin in the Hydro thread. :)
so does this mean umm that Clark is going to plow Lois like the fields of Kansas??

That's from the original Jim Lee art used in the manip. In the original, Superman's left eye is glowing red with heat vision.

NOT only on HBO - we don't get HBO! Would explain the rumors of a miniseries, though... Y'know, the Sci-Fi channel might go for it...:word:

Have they ever shown the inside of Clark's closet on SV? Is it like the one the diplomat's son had for the strippers in Exposed? Even though Clark burns/mangles/shreds/gets shot in outfits, he seems to have more identical shirts and jackets in the next scene or episode. THIS is why the farm is close to going under: replacement Clark clothing!

In the January 15th - 21st issue of TV Guide, "Cheers & Jeers" section...
CHEERS to Warner Bros. for making a Babylon 5 direct-to-DVD movie. The cult sci-fi series' creator, J. Michael Straczynski, will write and direct "Babylon 5: The Lost Tales," featuring returning stars Bruce Boxleitner, Tracy Scoggins and Peter Woodward. Fans won't have to wait until the 23rd century - it's slated for release later this year.

Problem is if they do this with SV they should have done it before Clark looks to old. Plus IMO I wouldn't want to see him in SV as Clark Kent if they do a movie but as Superman and that won't happen.

Yeah, 'cause he's starting to look pretty long-in-the-tooth now, especially when you compare him to other actors who've played the character.Well your right there compared to Jeff East and Stephan Bender he would look a little older since he is only playing Young Clark Kent and not Superman:p

I would expect it I mean it may have been canceled nine years ago but they still have been doing DTV for it since then for a while now.

Whoa buddy. We usually see eye 2 eye on the Sci-fi geek stuff but I'd have to disagree on this. Seasons 3 and 4 of Babylon 5 were IMO the best written stuff ever. Yeah the show started off meh especially because it air'd the same time as the better DS9 was airing but it gradually became epic.

The Superman home page has a poll asking which actor from the current movie should be replaced in a new Superman movie. It's your chance to make your vote count.

I got curious and looked at the other recent polls there. Interesting. I'll leave it at that. http://www.patcostello.com/smileys/smug.gif

lool ppl really hated Bosworth's portrayal it seems...
Plus, I don't know when this poll was done (since I don't remember seeing it or voting in it) but still it got 38% of the votes...
Should Warner Bros. allow "Smallville" to run for a few years and then make a big-budget Superman movie using the "Smallville" cast?

2.) Yes, I think they should 116 9%
3.) Undecided 29 2%
4.) No, I don't think they should 40 3%
5.) No way, they should make a Superman movie ASAP without the "Smallville" cast 583 46%
6.) Other 15 1%
Even though the makers of "Smallville" have always stated "No Flights, No Tights", which of the two would you prefer to see?
votes perc
1.) Clark flying 423 56%
2.) Clark wearing the Superman costume 264 35%
3.) Neither
Which actor do you think made the best Clark Kent?
votes perc
1.) Kirk Alyn 4 0%
2.) George Reeves 52 5%
3.) Christopher Reeve 474 50%
4.) Dean Cain 146 15%
5.) John Haymes Newton 11 1%
6.) Gerard Christopher 6 1%
7.) Tom Welling 260 27%
And this one I had never seen there:

2.) Nicolas Cage 16 2%
3.) Brendan Fraser 64 7%
4.) Russell Crowe 27 3%
